heavy wingedfeel inside” compact disc

  • the frozen darkness (15:38)
  • the tangled white (16:19)

grey wash of distant, chugging psych... kinda sounds like a group of teenagers rehearsing the recent hototogisu / burning star core disc down the street ...

heavy wingedfeel inside” archive38

brand new three trax release from portland / brooklyn based unit which comes on the heels of the bands recently re-issue disc, and highly excellent three lobed release “blacc lust”, comes three long playing journeys into psych noise dronedom.

i’m not a huge fan of the press release description game where the label goes on to babble and make absurd quotes like “sounds like every band that has sold a shit load of records this past month if you combine sunno))) with your mamma then you know exactly how great this record is”. i’d just like to humbly state to me it comes off like the bardo pond brothers recording in the lo-fi high fuzz induced kitchen of the goslings. all label claims aside listen to the clip!! package comes packed in a double cover center opening sleeves with the outer shell being a vellum overlay wonderfully executed graphically by chase middaugh.

single pressing of 600 copies

gärden söundblack summit” long playing record

  • forbidden paradise
  • beast of burden

  • hidden origin
  • obsidian sky
october 2010 release ; debut release from this new aggregate, featuring 2/2’s of barn owl & eternal tapestry’s dewey mahood & jed bindeman ...

the curious use of umlauts would lead one to believe that the intended destination is gårdet ca. 1970, but the two main pieces are definitely rooted in seattle ca. 1991 ; monolithic guitar bloom, caveman drums and the like ... that said, the two “opener” pieces show a lighter touch, with some nice, snaking, modal guitar interplay amidst jed’s subtle malletings ...

digiv028: gärden sound "black summit lp

when it comes to blown-out psychedelia, the first current band i want to hear is eternal tapestry. when it comes to desolate desert blues, that band is barn owl. those are two pretty potent names in the world of experimental music right now so when 4/5 of them join up for some portland sessions, that's good news for us all. gärden sound is the quartet of dewey mahood and jed bindeman of eternal tapestry (as well as plankton wat & heavy winged, respectively) and jon porras and evan caminiti of barn owl. "black summit" is their first charcoal-lined foray into the deep and if you can't get lost in this haze, there's not much hope.

immediately evident is the incredible restraint shown by all four players. they're not being timid or trying to feel each other out, but there's an obvious level of comfort and understanding between each. with three guitars and bindeman's trademark drumming, it would be easy to drown everything in full-on sludge but gärden sound are too damn good to play that game. opener, "forbidden paradise," sets the scene. methodical guitar works lull the listener into a solemn state of comfort while bindeman adds to the hypnosis with tribal-infused narcotic rhythms. the build-up is slow but gets you ready for the knock-down blasts of "beast of burden." heavy stomp and zoned-out, smoked-out guitar riffs that blow the roof to oblivion. this is music that needs to be played as loud as you can stand it.

"hidden origin" calms things back down, contemplating the next move while finding its way through the blackened labryinth concocted by porras, caminiti and mahood. each guitarist finds his own path as they lead each other to the prize. the 14-minute closer, "obsidian sky," brings everything home. sprawling riffage like a dense forest of apocalyptic crumble. desolation takes hold as the molasses drones take shape and form themselves into an unpassable mountain of debris. it's mind-bending and cathartic; a sonic temple crushed to ash so it can rise again. gärden sound prove worthy opponents, ably standing on their own and stomping out their own trail toward the stars.

mastered by james plotkin. vinyl only edition of 400 copies w/ original cover art by evan caminiti.

heavy wingedsunspotted” long playing record

  • breathe life (19:33)

  • vapor trails (24:41)
december 2010 release ; ... occasionally miss out on certain things entirely ; had only heard a rather grimy live-disc from these guys from their early days, but randomly walked into a record shop where this was playing recently & really dug it, brought in a few copies for the stragglers (like myself) ... crunchy, desiccated, desert-wind blown mono-chord free rock in one of its finer contemporary incarnations ...

sunspotted” by heavy winged

the latest solar blast of shimmering guitar noise from this us three-piece.

heavy winged are a sprawling north american trio made up of drummer jed bindeman, bassist brady sansone and guitarist ryan hebert. over the last few years the band have released a cacophonous splatter of cassettes, vinyl and cdrs for not not fun, digitalis, aurora borealis and a handful of other esteemed imprints. most of these have been mercilessly grimy signifiers of their buzzing free-rock style, and were recorded poorly to almost accentuate the harsh guitar tones and double-time blast beats. this latest jagged offering however is a rare beast in the heavy winged canon, offering a higher fidelity peek into their muddled world.

this time around the band escaped to a ‘realstudio to record two slices of extended sludge rock, which come across as wider than ever thanks to some fresh recording techniques. something like an unholy union between the sheet-noise of yellow swans and the blissful sub-harmonic transcendence of early mogwai or sonic youth, ‘sunspotted’ is an album that takes tried and tested sounds and bends them beyond recognition. sure plenty of bands have made distorted, blurred, guitar noise before, but rarely with the conviction and wit of heavy winged. with their early explorations into doom and metal we find the band on a high, framing their high-octane jitter into something that could almost be mistaken for beautiful. just as the aforementioned yellow swans took their sound from the outer reaches of noise to something, dare i say it, pretty, heavy winged have focused their three individual powers to come up with an album that revels in its depth and shimmering beauty.

it might take a few listens to reveal its layers but ‘sunspotted’ is a challenging and rewarding listening experience. standing at the top of the band’s already estimable catalogue of albums and eps, this album finds them at a key moment, a moment where they have found a balance between fidelity and grit, harmony and discord. step in, turn it up and let yourself descend.

xelain bocca al lupo” compact disc

xela : in bocca al lupo

the true sound of total desolation...

in 2006 xela (aka type records main man john twells) released the horror-flecked epic ‘the dead sea’. taking influence from the movies of dario argento and umberto lenzi and fusing them with a lovecraftian concept he created the perfect tribute to his obsession. every good horror movie has a sequel, and for this full-length follow up john has used the dark corners of the christian religion as his guide.

composed initially for a fear-themed chicago art installation, the sixty-minute piece gradually took shape as a celebration of desolate cellars and distant church bells, the things that truly scare him. researching further took him to spain and italy as he explored basilicas, cathedrals and crumbling churches in search of inspiration. ancient stories, whispered histories and sounds drifting through generations became the basis of the recording, which is split into four distinct parts.

beginning with metallic scrapes and haunting industrial soundscapes we drift among fluidly dense drones, electrical hums and crumbling noise. like a doom-laden take on the crunching assault of hair police or a noisy version of david lynch’s eraserhead soundtrack, the music is stripped down to the bare bones of what is necessary. before long we hit the record’s central piece, ‘in deo salutari meo’ which takes an almost funereal tone, using religious bells as the primary sound source. eventually the album climaxes on the longest piece, ‘beatae immortalitatis’, which features heavy winged’s jed bindeman on drums. bindeman was last seen lending his percussive skills to ‘calling for vanished faces’ which appeared on the xela/mgr split earlier this year, and here his pummelling beats accompany john’s icy oscillator tones. like a free-form pan sonic this takes heavy electronic music into a frightening new place ending in a thick cloud of screams and crackle. one might even call it a religious experience.
