the valerie project
dc352 2xlp

“joseph gervasi and i had been talking about doing a synergistic film/music project for some time, and both of us brought up valerie. it so happened that joseph owned a 16mm print of the film. i was blown away by its dreamlike imagery, old-world purity, psychedelic candor and mesmerizing soundtrack.”

greg weeks (of espers) is describing the genesis of a new musical review entitled the valerie project. inspired by a classic of czech new wave cinema, jaromir jires’ valerie and her week of wonders (1970), greg, joined by members of espers and other philadelphia groups such as fern knight, grass, fursaxa, timesbold, woodwose and rake (as well as enigmatic electronicist charles cohen), conceived a new soundtrack to the film.

valerie and her week of wonders is allegorical coming of age film; a work populated by bewitched earrings, weasels, vampires, frisky maidens, friskier huntsmen, wicked aunts, bespectacled eagles and the handsomest mustache this side of 1970, the year the film debuted.

key to the valerie project’s conception is how reframing the film’s action with an alternate soundtrack draws new interpretations from a work of depth and changeable meaning. lubos fiser’s original score is lovingly recalled and ambitiously targeted by the group as a sound cycle to be equaled every time they play it. the tone is dense and ornate, expansively acid-charged — “a symphonic version of magma” at its zenith.

in particular, the film’s themes of lost innocence and pastoral living struck a chord with weeks and his fellow players. “there’s a current movement towards responsible living ... a need and desire to reorient to a world that is too chaotic, too oppressive, too technologically stifling,” says weeks. “it’s a new version of the ‘back to the land’ phenomenon only with lessons learned. valerie taps into so much of that. it projects a political and cultural message that is all the more relevant today.”

ii
dc310 cd

drag city is pleased and proud to introduce the debut of espers on the drag city label — and to announce:

from deep within espers’ collective heart and lifeblood has sprung, fully-formed, espers ii!

espers started appearing around the philadelphia area in 2002 and quickly established themselves as one of the beautiful new bands in the world these days. since espers self-titled (and acclaimed) first album was released in early 2004, a lot has gone down. addressing “today” directly, the band collated the ups and downs that formed their lives over the last two years and infused their new songs with a light and darkness that proved transformative when the time to make music came again. and so we thank the gods for the light and darkness.

from the beginning, espers has been a living growing thing. ii finds the group at sextet size, with greater powers and capabilities than before. still, the original spirit of the band — the american ideal of the democracy (that is in no way reflected in its current goverment) — rules espers in everything they do, gives them true freedoms to reach for the spiritual and the fun at once, and to make their music from it.

the sound of espers ii was achieved using a mad variety of instruments, from your standard everyday martin 6-string acoustics, fender jazzbass and drumkit to more exotic implements such as doumbek, dholak and male & female larynx (which we assume are swung around in the air to produce a recorder-like sound). espers at play tap into their shared spaces with joy and a sense of humor (and wonder, naturally). the musical outcome is a friendly new sensation — as the record plays, it warms the room and dims the lights with dense yet agile atmospherics, allowing you the listener to relax, despite and yet still in communion with the realities of our present day.

mythical beastscales” compact disc

  • cycle / circle

october 2008 release ; debut album from this group previously associated with the not not fun label (they shared two split lps w/ pocahaunted & cloudland canyon, respectively) ...
language of stone press release...
mythical beast is:
corinne sweeney: vocals & percussion
aaron lee hawn: bass, synth, & percussion
jeremiah orndorff cowlin: guitar & percussion

like a would-be soundtrack to some forgotten wagnerian saga, mythical beast's debut full-length unleashes sonic elements akin to trudging minions in an epic struggle for tonal supremacy. this bloodless battle is for hearts and minds though, and is shot through with majesty and pathos. it's no wonder that a trio commanding this type of simple yet nuanced compositional energy would risk life and limb crossing the new orleans "security" perimeter one month post- katrina to rescue their gear from a semi-ravaged practice facility. the fact certainly provides insight into the spirit behind their dread progressions of guitar, bass and vocals. mythical beast's music is dank, grim and heavy as hell, but at its heart lies an indestructible momentum and spirit in no small part due to corrine's valkarie-esque presence. all this is an elaborate way of saying that mythical beast wield power and majesty with equal acumen. come join the struggle.

much is made about the lack of originality in music. “everything has been done, and done to death” people decry. this is a very modern attitude, and perhaps more than a bit flawed. music has always been a continuum. styles and traditions are passed from one generation to the next to be cherished, replicated, altered or reinvented. just as one individual looks to another for identity and support, so one song looks to the last for meaning; a place in the grand structure.

noa babayof does what many before her have done. she is a folk musician in the singer-songwriter tradition. she pays homage here, stretches boundaries there, and most often plays within the structures formed by the greats that preceded her. this in itself is not an easy task. very few have what it takes to make it on a stage where what separates the weak from the strong is neither record sales nor charisma, but the greatness of the songs. this is something, i’m sure, noa is reminded of each time she picks up her guitar to meet the challenge.

noa babayof is an israeli native. she will spend the next year in the united states touring in support of the north american release of from a window to a wall. noa records and performs in english. noa will be releasing a video single directed by festival’s alexis powell and greg weeks. weeks produced and arranged the album.

all songs written by noa babayof produced and recorded by greg weeks at hexham head, philadelphia, pa mixed by brian mctear and itay taragano at trx studios additional mixing by udi koomran and noa babayof, ginger studios mastered by erez caspi, bardo studios. string arrangements by greg weeks additional vocal arrangements on “them that are writing these songs,” “midtown fair,” and “at your death” by omer hershman

jesse sparhawk: mandolin on “one song,” harp on “before sleep” and “midtown fair”
greg weeks: recorder, percussion, white/pink noise, bells
jessica weeks: flute on “a song for me”
margaret wienk: cello, contra bass

when teenage imaginings transcend childhood's end and lodge with concrete ferocity within the sound world of adult reality, one can find a unique realm wherein dulcimers and glam-rock guitar frenzies manifest with uniform importance. the trick is knowing not to discern a difference. gillian chadwick understands this more than most visconti acolytes. her employment of the fantastic within ex reverie's epic confines heralds a return to a reality deeper than most modern folksinger neo-realists can manage to muster. in a post-'70s realm, the struggle is to circumnavigate irony without succumbing to blandness or facile dictations of woe. b>ex reverie's the door into summer maps that route with crystalline authority.

gillian chadwick is half of woodwose (language of stone) and a member of golden ball (honeymoon music).

ilya e. monosov's seven lucky plays, or how to fix songs for a broken heart is monosov's private celebration of the human experience and are based on his poems and stories written from 1996-2007. his early exposure to russian dissident culture greatly affected his life and art. influenced from a young age by his parents' passion for literature, art, and poetry; as well as by the music of vladimir vysotsky, alexander galich, leonard cohen, coltrane, miles davis, and african american folk music traditions (blues and gospel), monosov's picked acoustic guitar and voice arrangements were recorded at hexham head by greg weeks (of espers), and feature strings by margaret weink (fern knight), mandolin and harp by jesse sparhawk, and electric guitar by weeks.

ilya monosov is half of the shining path (holy mountain) and a member of mountain home. features players jesse sparhawk (language of stone) and margaret wienk (fern knight).

  • comes, the winter
  • omie wise
  • nottamun town
nice, mellow, downer folk side from this group, counting ilya monosov (whose collaborative, minimalism-laced lps with preston swirnoff on eclipse are, imho, the highlights of the catalogue) amongst its ranks ...
language of stone press release...
not everyone dreams of a mountain home, which is good, because if they did there'd be no real hope for those of us who actually need one. of course, many folks who pine for a solitary life amidst the elements find themselves far removed from the requirements to make such a lifestyle immediately possible.

that's where a band like mountain home come in. and not just them, but the host of musicians, promoters, publications, venues and enthusiasts that have cropped up over the past ten years or so to champion a musical array that supports an overall cultural reorientation. besides such crushingly poetic offerings as 'the sparrow,' mountain home promulgate an earthen visage and wooden sound capable of bleeding sap into the veins of city dwellers and suburban refugees the world over.

orion rigel dommissewhat i want from you is sweet” compact disc

  • simon sent for me
  • a faceless death
  • capricorn
  • ashes from your burning wood
  • suicide kiss (because dead)
  • a giver
  • little neighbor
  • drink yourself (to death)
interesting album of sparse songs utilizing electric cello and synthesizer as the main instrumentaiton; i’m sure someone is going to come along and compare this to arthur russell, but the tone is much more rustic & direct...

maybe a bit outside of the light-spectrum that’s normally represented here, but this has a certain charm...
language of stone press release...
on the surface, orion rigel dommisse's song world is marked by death, desolation and personal disaster. that the events populate a fairy-tale-like terrain is no small point. the transmutation of terror and dread into a manageable folkloric currency makes complete sense given the fantastic elements sewn within orion's singular visions.

as with the best fantasy tales, orion's songs thread multiple meanings, some obvious, others occluded, through a linear narrative of disarming depth. all the while the tone is charged, with menace and beauty. this is classical music set to lucio fulci's the beyond, folk music from some lost balkan province where moonlight feeds all need for vitamin d.

orion's text is a dark, rich blood that oozes through organs, infusing them with all manner of unearthly metastices; mutations which allow them to evolve through pain, survive the corruptions of this world and deliver upon it an inverse of the negativity it so often yields. orion feels the world like few others can. our reward for that is what i want from you is sweet.

espers are a boy/girl/girl trio from philly featuring singer/songwriter greg weeks, meg baird and brooke sietinsons who combine the elemental sound of acid-folk with the baroque arrangements of late 60s chamber rock.

fully versed in the sumptuous vernacular of drug music, the cradle of appalachian song, and the succinct truths of the three-minute pop ballad, their full length debut is an irresistible collection of sweet and subtle songs essential for fans of fairport convention, pentangle, jackson c. franck, bread, love & dreams and bert jansch.

espers are the sound of the new weird america the way it should be heard -- with the ease, infectious grace and absolute beauty of an ever expansive trio bound for ever greater pastures.

fern knight: margaret wienk, jim ayre, jesse sparhawk and james wolf with greg weeks, orion rigel dommisse and gillian chadwick

third cd of beautiful music from fern knight, led by the crystal voice, guitar, and strings of margie wienk. drawing from diverse influences such as krautrock, uk folk and early baroque and renaissance music, fern knight’s eponymous recording juxtaposes the calm surface of harp, cello, and violin against the perfectly-timed distorted squalls of jim ayre’s flying v and a dark undercurrent of lyrical and vocal mystery. the overall effect is a lush, pastoral and warm ode to all things green and living, a running theme that winds through the songs: “all is lost / and all will run / over graying ground / to the rays of the sun,” sings wienk in the album’s closing track, “magpie suite part iii.” the album’s cohesion rests upon the core quartet’s combination of acoustic and electronic instruments, providing the perfect vehicle for wienk’s unique song writing and string arrangements. since the 2006 release of “music for witches and alchemists” (vhf#101), fern has toured extensively in the us and europe, as well touring and recording along side contemporaries greg weeks and brooke sietinsons of espers and tara burke of fursaxa in drag city artists the valerie project. packaged in full color card folio with color booklet.
