greg davisregarding wave” compact disc

  • regarding wave (part 1) (6:11)
  • rainbow body (22:38)
  • regarding wave (part 2) (12:56)
june 2010 release ; three warm, enveloping, tonal works from greg davis ...

the two “regarding wave” pieces unfold at a snail’s pace ; timbrally they sound like “frozen” clouds of massed string ensembles, carefully laid into a giant dorian lattice (i’m reminded a little bit of jim o’rourke’s first “orchestral” pieces such as “disengage”) ... the album’s centerpiecerainbow body” takes a good 10 minutes to slowly creep out of a beat-frequency-laced sine-tone cluster into an almost clashing, harmonically-rich root-fifth chord, before the latter wins out & the piece resolves to a wholly pleasant footing (listen to the sound-sample for this bit, post-resolution) ...

these three sessions of wonder & magic come pressed into the pits & lans of a compact disc, housed in a full-color gatefold flat-pack, designed by greg himself ... highly recommended !!!

greg davis - regarding wave

limited to 1000 full-color eco-wallet.

dialing in from a growing catalog spread across several labels and a decade of work, greg davis brings install a beautiful new album: regarding wave. admittedly, we don't know too much about how greg made regarding wave, but we do know that he made it just for us, and we can certainly affirm that greg knows the install sound very well, having mastered wood-land's stone circle cd-r last year.

musically this album has a shimmering brightness about it, almost like an auditory hall of mirrors where the smallest chime echoes and repeats kaleidoscopically forever. over the course of three tracks, greg produces moments of rippling beauty via polite tonal drones that evolve at glacial speed. full of harmony and accessibility, regarding wave is not only a welcome addition to greg's diverse oeuvre, but also a worthy introduction to his music for newcomers.

the bottom line: if you already know greg davis, you know this will be amazing, and if you don't, prepare to be impressed!

kranky (usa) #krank 132 cd

greg davismutually arising” compact disc

  • cosmic mudra (28:50)
  • hall of pure bliss (22:24)
july 2009 release ; gorgeous, life-affirming work from greg davis, in the form of two static-leaning modal synthesizer pieces ...

the first is a straight 20-minute climb up a ladder (filter), in which we’re slowly made aware of the myriad overtones in a big ‘ol root-fifth-octave square-wavepower chord(ending in the introduction of more dissonant frequencies ...) & the second runs a root-fifth-sixth cluster (played on what sounds like a harmonium run through a very gooey slow-mod phaser) through its paces, again, with the phasing subtly outlining the individual upper-harmonic spectral components dancing around in the room ...

this is very patient, long-form music, on par with jim o’rourke’s recent dips into his tape-stash and/or the historic synth-drone works of richard lainhart, david behrman, et.al ... if you’ve been swept up with the more recent work of eleh, and/or are after a more “tonal” variant of eliane radigue’s whole “thing” this is a great one to check out ... highly recommended !!!

september 2008 release ; the third solo outing for kranky from town & country / singer / drmwpn member (and fellow nightcrawler) ben vida ...

largely cast in the shadows of his familiar ethno-improv style (as always, his languorous vocals add soporific texture throughout) with takes ranging from some lovely terry riley-lineage minimalist patternage to afro-beat-laced upper-neck guitar & castanet / hand-drum figures, to his first experiments with blending electronic timbres into the fray (the short but sweet “synthesizer solo” offers up an admirable microcosm of sun-ra lineage keyboard skronk - listen to the sound-sample) ...

... just how ben manages to offer up such a diverse measure of pan-genre sound so effortlessly is beyond my comprehension, but you don’t necessarily need a degree in ethnomusicology to appreciate what’s on offer here ...

kranky (usa) #krank 074 cd

greg davissomnia” compact disc

  • archer (7:16)
  • clouds as edges (edit) (10:49)
  • diaphanous (edit) (7:53)
  • campestral (version 2) (22:15)
  • furnace (4:02)
  • mirages (version 2) (7:37)
it’s very gratifying to hold in my hand a disc of greg’s abstract process-based works as released in a non-cdr/non-regional/non-limited form. frankly, the tendency of composer-performers of recent vintage to relegate their “alternative” musical explorations to micro-pressings and kunst-editions (thus invalidating them in regards to their “proper” output) makes me a bit queasy ... as if the only way to integrate one’s experimental-music leanings into their “gesamtkunstwerk” is to employ some sort of twisted supply-demand logic, thus making the “object” covetable (and not the organized sounds themselves) ; to this i say bunk ...

enter the kranky label, who, while making an astute differentiation between greg’s song-based acoustic digitalia and his musical pursuits other, choose not to present “somnia” as an “aside”, but as a living, breathing entity with a soul and roots of it’s own, both coexisting with and predating this thing called “folk-tro-nice”.

i’ve had these pieces beaten into me at volumes ranging from modest (home stereo via cdr) to extreme (dozens of european music festivals at which greg and i were particpiants), as such they’ve become something of a vocabulary... it’s hard to distance myself from memories of the environments in which i first heard this sound-combination, or that spectral-drone (these are all good memories, and keep me warm when i’m not out in the world reciting.).

with that in mind i will say that greg is among the most important musicians honing their craft as a full-time practitioner in this day and age, regardless of style and or selection of tools and modes. he’s tapped into something bubbling in the collective subconscious of everyone who has grown up in the internet age, with the entire history of recorded music available at a button’s click ... without the hovering voice of “big brother” specifying the correct path between musical movements, leaving us to forge our own paths ... (who says it’s not right to appreciate the finer points of both early 80s german synthesizer music and morton feldman? why not combine finger-picked guitar with toy instruments and bleeding-edge spectral analysis & resynthesis algorithms? who’s to say that dovetailing an album of song-form pieces with one of extended-duration theme and variation studies is somehow inherently wrong?.. it’s not, and we both know it.) what we used to refer to as “disparate influences” back in the 80s/90s are now all fair game ... and it’s great that musicians such as greg are finally beginning to put this into practice.

an amazing record, absolutely perfect for the sunday mornings when you just don’t want to enter reality just yet ...
kranky press release...
artist: greg davis
title: somnia
catalog #: krank074
formats available: cd
release date: oct. 18, 2004

greg davis has made recorded appearances on numerous singles and compilations, played around the world and is best known for his two albums on the carpark label; arbor and curling pond woods. those two albums, as impressive and well received as they are, don't tell the whole story of davis' omnivorous interest in music (he studied composition and jazz studies at depaul university and composition at the new england conservatory of music) and considerable abilities.

somnia collects drone-oriented material greg davis has been working over the last two to three years with the final track, "mirages (version 2)" being a recording from spring 2004 using a schaaf punchcard music box and computer. each track features a single instrument (bowed psaltery, acoustic guitar, harmonica, fender rhodes, magnus chord organ) played by davis and then filtered through a computer. the tones that come out of the process bear little immediate resemblance to the instrument of origin, taking on extended and diffuse forms of their own.

having performed behind a laptop and toured with his own band, greg davis is uniquely situated, in a scene full of point and clickers, to create music that actually synthesizes and doesnt merely recombine. somnia is a product of his longstanding interest in both organic sounds (as created by instruments played in realtime) and the transformational possibilities of computers. an early version of "clouds as edges" was davis' first release as a single on the grounded label in 2001. somnia focuses on one area of greg davis' many musical interests and widens his earlier laptop work as it reflects back on the instrumental textures used in his most recent solo work.

just got some fresh copies of this, one of mms’ all-time best sellers, direct from mr. greg davis during his trip down the mountain for the 2nd entschuldigen nacht... get it while it’s fresh!

always a pleasure to hear greg in full-on electro-acoustic mode; here working in tandem with the fantastic chicagoland drummer/percussionist steven hess (see: bosco & jorge, his duo “on” with sylvain chaveau, the dropp ensemble, and on stage with black forest / black sea, aram shelton, etc...) the pair do their damnedest to emulate laotian insect-population buildup via hess’ pointillist tap & greg’s fft-smear. by far the most patient & abstract work in either of their respective canons, well worth investigating...
longbox recordings press release...
greg davis - laptop
steven hess - drums and percussion

all tracks are live improvisations recorded direct to mini-disc between february and june of 2003 at steven’s apartment. fades and minor edits were applied afterwords. track 2 is from a recording of a live performance at the empty bottle, chicago on 29 april 2003.

a truly fine and austere statement from our favorite electric troubadour and the percussive fog known as steven hess.

“steven hess has been a student of his record collection since the mid-'70s. comfortable playing in a range of settings - rock, jazz, experimental, steven currently plays with the post-folk unit bosco & jorge out of chicago. he tours throughout the united states and can be heard on recordings that are available worldwide. his philosophy on sound and rhythm: less is more. steven has played, or otherwise collaborated with, such artists as: ben miller (destroy all monsters), fred longberg-holm, jon mueller, matt turner, rob mazurek, cynthia dall, adam sonderberg, aram shelton, john and frank navin (the aluminum group), and greg davis, to name a few.”

'states' is my name for a series of explorations and studies of modular synthesizer music.

this series is meant to document the evolution and journey with this particular instrument (which is ever changing)

the condition of matter with respect to structure, form, constitution, phase, or the like

the pieces are generally constructed by spending a lot of time setting up complex, multi-voice patches on the synthesizer and working with it for hours / days to sculpt the sound into an interesting space. then i normally record the patch for a length of time, usually without much interaction during the recording. i tend to gravitate towards autonomous systems that are interesting enough as they are (this is an aspect of modular synthesizers that is very fascinating to me). after various patches are recorded, then i work with the materials as sound objects (or states) and put together the compositions through editing / mixing / layering, etc…each of the larger 'states' pieces is composed of many smaller parts of many hours of recordings.

the condition of a person or thing, as with respect to circumstances or attributes

states (4) was particularly focused on working and building patches around two sequencers in my system. these were the core of all of the patches and everything grew out of that center. (except for the first and last part of the cassette which were earlier computer controlled oscillator experiments). i was also interested in further focusing in on more rhythmic patches (no matter how off kilter or polyrhythmic they may be). i think this was a natural outgrowth of working with the two sequencers. this cassette has the most simplistic compositional structure so far of the whole series. it is simply 5 patches per side separated by sine tone beeps (which is a descending overtone series on g).

there were four 'states' releases on cassettes on four different record labels over the last year. this is the last one for a little while. i felt that this was a good place to pause the series while i work on other music projects and dig deeper into the modular synthesizer to discover an even more personal music.

a particular condition of mind or feeling

  • lightning proves to be unnecessary
  • custom made mobile (for robert lawrence davis)
third in the melektronikk series. i will be a very happy man if greg continues to release such distinctly formed music on little 7” circles of plastic.

first piece is a building rager of distorted acoustic guitar mess; transfiguring suddenly into a pastoral folk-piece for harmonium and said acoustic. on the flip is a fantastically mellow piece for his baby nephew. you can feel the love in the air...

harmonizer
world complete

harmonizer, or as lovingly referred to as harmo around these parts is the vermont duo of toby aronson and veteran zone shredder greg davis, whose explorations into pastoral electronics have been well documented by kranky, carpark and his own autumn records. the duo’s previous effort, a self-titled cassette on aronson’s own stellar nna tapes label was the definitive “5th world” statement and solidified them with the koan of nu free electronic music shared by the likes of fellow melodic noisers caboladies and oneohtrix point never.

on world complete harmo boggles brains via the storied terrain that jon hassell once charted, adding sub bass, magic eye loops and some fusion gomf that is makes them decidedly more on the corner than aka-darbari-java. but who needs to be convinced about a band named after the most dramatic stompbox of the late 20th century. we don’t. band burns, this ep burns. sayonara.

tonschacht (germany) #tons 017 ep

greg davisgather • scatter” seven inch single record

  • scatter (4:32)
  • two skylines (1:03)

  • gather (6:18)
an absolute monster of a record from greg, in the form of a set of pure “process music” pieces for computer and a lone 0.25 second sample ; the 4-bit squeech of a casio sk-1’s snare drum ...

on the three pieces herein: scatter is a silence-ridden, pointillist catalogue of carefully-lain lo-bit iterations, which segues into two skylines, a loose minute-plus of collected thematic beeping. gather is an amazing through-composed electro-acoustic coalescence of the sounds & themes introduced on the a-side ...

by far the most overtly noisy and aggressive piece of music i’ve heard from greg on record (makes the “clouds as edges” ep on grounded sound like candy floss in comparison.) - seriously, if this doesn’t convince you that greg is at the top of his game (even better, that he was already at the top of his game back in 2001!) you need a serious egg-shell cracking. highly recommended !!!
tonschacht press release...
artist: greg davis
title: gather/scatter
format: 7"
cat #: tons017

this record was created entirely from a casio sk1 drum machine sample. this sample was then processed in real-time using a custom-built max/msp sound environment. 'scatter' was created by subtracting (or scattering) these sounds, processing them further and adding silences until i achieved a desired lesser density. 'gather' was created by adding (or gathering) these sounds, processing them further and overlaying them until i achieved a desired greater density. all of these sounds were then carefully arranged with soundedit16 to create the finished pieces. 'two skylines' was created by taking the processed source sample and processing it further with sonicworx powerbundle. then the waveforms of the left and the right channels were rectified in such a way as to resemble two city skylines. these pieces were created between the late winter of 2001 and the early fall of 2002. this record is dedicated to john cage.

a memento-object from the 2002 wrong festival held in barcelona around the time of sonar (but in no way related or in direct competition with it thank you very much). hrvatski cleared out the second night, literally, pretty much playing till the room emptied. now you can relive the moment when the lights came up over and over and over again. this dsp-zonked out version of 'kochen raum' being the last thing you would have heard ...

non geography-specific collection of various approaches/intents as compiled by mr. a.schrock, a fellow somerville resident. not of the smack-you-in the face variety, but rather thoughtful. especially good are my boys (greg, don, matt-mr.interrupt, and sam-soplerfo) keeping it quite real. werd...

november 2009 release ; excellent collection of new music composed in just intonation, compiled by duane pitre ...

standout pieces include charles curtiswolftone-infused “stanzas set before a blank surface(echoes of his recent reading of eliane radigue’s “naldjorlak”), ellen fullman & theresa wong’s “blue tunnel fields(rife with ellen’s bubbling long-string resonances), greg davis’ “star primes(a massive groundswell of digitally synthesized sine-tone combinations ala “the dream house”), and duane’s own piece for just-tuned ukelin ...

... as both a crash-course in (the) alternate tuning(s) and a primer of the contemporary composers doing work in just, it can’t be beat ; highly recommended !!!

va - the harmonic series - musical works in just intonation - cd

imprec272 - cd

the harmonic series is a compilation of musical works in just intonation created by three generations of contemporary composers who utilize this fascinating tuning system. a dense info booklet is included with notes from each artist. this compilation was curated over the span of two years by duane pitre. the goal of this compilation and its accompanying liner notes is to educate listeners about the origins and use of just intonation, as well as to portray the unique beauty of this tonal “color palette,” which is heard by relatively few in the western world and explored by even fewer.

although all the artists on the compilation work within the avant-garde/experimental genre, each artist lends something unique to the collection, and each employs a different approach toward how to utilize just intonation. within the harmonic series you’ll find an array of instrumentation such as piano, cello, accordion, electronics, guitar, ukelin, saxophone, violin, koto, and more.

the featured artists on the harmonic series are: pauline oliveros, ellen fullman, charles curtis, michael harrison, greg davis, r keenan lawler, duane pitre, theresa wong, and zachary james watkins.

you’ve come a long way, baby...

2004-2005 roster-spanning double-cd overview from by far the most consistently appealing american record label since vanguard (ok... maybe finnadar)... yes, the price is correct, this is a double disc priced at $4.81. no reason to sleep on this one (at least until after you’ve acquired a copy and are all set for appreciation in your favorite chair/isolation tank).

i’ve got two pieces on here, one is the “psych” song from “antithesis”, the other is a rough version of a piece that will appear in a mildly transfigured state on “multiples”. plus you get an alternate version of one of greg’s “somnia” pieces, a brand-spanking new stars of the lid epic, and a smattering of jams from the last 10-odd kranky releases.

there’s never been a better time for the sort of horizontal-application sound-research that the kranky-label excels in...

artist: various
title: kompilation
catalog #: krank077
formats available: 2xcd
release date: nov. 1, 2004

we'll provide the context — two compact discs filled with twenty one tracks. over 148 minutes of music. brand new music from pan•american. a preview of forthcoming albums from stars of the lid and keith fullerton whitman. an exclusive mix of an album track by greg davis. all priced cheap at less than the cost of a cd ep.

it's been years since there's been a kranky sampler (and that one came out in europe only) so it's time to show what we've been up to for the last few years. way back when compilations like pillows and prayers and wanna buy a bridge? inspired us to check out tons of bands. hopefully kompilation can perform the same function for today's fans.
