giuseppe ielasi / renato rinaldioreledigneur” compact disc

  • (no tracklisting)
bowindo press release...
oreledigneur is the duo of giuseppe ielasi and renato rinaldi.

their collaboration started in 1998 with the release of the cd "may 15th" (fringes) with domenico sciajno and gino robair, followed by the first oreledigneur lp (co-released by fringes and fusetron), in collaboration with alessandro bosetti.

on this cd, they are credited as playing 'big and small objects and instruments'. we can hear guitars (motorized, activated, and even conventionally played and filtered via tapeloops), field recordings (close miked small motors, working machines, nature and whatever), small percussion. the last section was recorded live in the open air, with the essential contribution of stefano pilia on loops and double bass. recorded between 2002 and 2003 and assembled in the summer of 2003.

giuseppe ielasi: electronics
domenico sciajno: electronics and programming

giuseppe ielasi and domenico sciajno are both prominent members of the italian electroacoustic improv scene, not only as musicians, but also as concert promoters and organizers.

ielasi started playing guitar in 1988, and began exploring the art of improvised music soon after. in 1998 he founded the well-respected fringes label, in order to document his own work as well as that of other artists. in addition to his work on fringes, he has recorded for such labels as leo and sonoris. earlier this year, he released a superb solo cd-r on a small greek label, absurd. he has performed live with taku sugimoto, jerome noetinger, dean roberts, thomas lehn, michel doneda and brandon labelle.

sciajno began his career as an acoustic bassist and composer, studying acoustic and electronic composition with gilius van bergeijk and double bass in the royal conservatory of den haag in holland. in 2000, he released a sublime solo bass disc on fringes entitled broken bridge. he has collaborated with such artists as alvin curran and joel ryan, and sat in briefly with mimeo when the all-star electronic orchestra performed in bologna this past may.

ielasi and sciajno met in 1997, while searching for similarly minded musicians with which to collaborate. they began working in trio with ruggero radaele, later expanding to an acoustic quartet with christian alati, as documented on their leo lab release. over the last few years, ielasi and sciajno have each moved separately towards a vocabulary of pure electronics. in july of 2001, ielasi and sciajno met in palermo for a few days of intensive working and recording, the results of which are documented here.

right after compiles a series of perfectly crafted miniatures, featuring jagged shards of melody, slowly advancing crackles rippling with latent energy, and impeccably integrated techniques. the dazzling packaging was entirely created by nyc designer friederike paetzold.

howard stelzer / giuseppe ielasi - brombron 08: night life
korm plastics kp 2023
cd only
release date: january 1st 2006

korm plastics is proud to present the eigth release in the brombron series. originally a co-production between staalplaat and extrapool, it is now hosted by co-curator frans de waard. in the year 2000 frans de waard and extrapool started the brombron project. two or more musicians become artists in residence in extrapool, an arts initiative in nijmegen, the netherlands, with a fully equipped sound recording studio. these artists can work in a certain amount of time on a collaborative project; a project they always wished to do, but didn't have the time or the equipment to realize.

"i was introduced to giuseppe ielasi over email in 1999 or 2000 (i don't remember presicely), by a guy who ran a music magazine in italy called blowup. he was writing about cds on my label, intransitive, and suggested that i get in contact with his friend giuseppe, who was starting a label called fringes in milan. giuseppe and i exchanged some cds of our music, corresponded for awhile, and discovered that we had much in common.

giuseppe came to the us to promote his "right after" album with domenico sciajno, and we got along immediately. we're about the same age, have a similar temperament, play a similar sort of music, are from a similar kind of background, are excited about records, we love to eat, we're both kinda nerdy... yeah, giuseppe is my kind of guy! we had spoken about collaborating at a few points over the years, but somehow it just never happened, probably because we're so busy with our various projects and labels. so when i was offered a brombron residency, i thought it would a perfect opportunity to spend some time hanging out and playing music with giuseppe.

the method we chose was to first proceed to the closest coffee shop for a breakfast of cheese and meat sandwiches (me) and cookies (giuseppe), then we'd record improvisations for a few hours until lunchtime. i primarily used cassette tapes and giuseppe used a guitar, but we also both played synths and electronic doodads and microphones, and i made some tape recordings around the city that i brought back in to our improvisations. our minds were open, and we experimented without deciding in advance what sort of album we might be making. we'd then take a long walk, go to the nijmegen record shops (where plurex records are still cheap!), have some lunch, maybe also a snack, and then start to edit out the good bits from the morning. we'd also add some effects and change some parts, use the recordings as source material in a small way. then we'd return to the record shops to buy the records we hesitated on in the afternoon, have some dinner and relax. the next day, we'd wake up, have coffee, and do it again. our pace of working and comfort matched quite well. for the final few days of the residency, we started to piece together our bits until they worked as compositions. then we edited some more until the album emerged.

about the title.... we gave a duo concert at extrapool as part of the requirements of our residency. there was an art opening happening at the same time, so the gallery was packed with people. it was a lot of fun, but it also made us both feel a bit strange; we're somewhat awkward in social situations, and didn't know anyone at the extrapool party except for frans and roel meelkop, who drove out from rotterdam. after our set, we split to go get more fried dutch snacks. along the walk, we talked about how we used to go out to parties more often when we were younger, but now we aren't even so old and we generally enjoy staying at home where it's quiet, listening to records and reading. giuseppe was reminded on the song by arthur russell, "losing my taste for the nightlife". maybe we are. or, maybe that's just how we felt on that evening. it doesn't matter, really, i suppose.

kranky press release...
artist: dean roberts
title: be mine tonight
catalog #: krank063
formats available: cd
release date: nov. 17, 2003

be mine tonight is a recording of songs. slow, often wrenching songs where the brush of a cymbal, a voice or a plucked string can have great impact. through arrangement, processing and editing dean roberts has crafted out rock that presents listeners with familiar forms as it challenges them with oblique gestures. improvisational and electronic strategies are ably utilized to push the dimensions of rock songs played by a group of people together in one room.

be mine tonight is the very first production of a young engineer and composer valerio tricoli, a rising name in the world of improvisational music. it was recorded in bologna , italy from dec. 2000 to dec. 2002. giuseppe ielasi, of fringes recordings and a legend of italian improvisational guitar, contributed prepared guitar, as did christian alati. the deft drumming by antonio arrabbito marks his recording debut. roberts played acoustic and electric guitars, piano, percussion, bass, harmonium and glass harmonica.

renato renaldihoarse frenzy” compact disc

  • (40:10)
one continuous 40-minute piece from renato rinaldi, previously known for his duo with giuseppi ielasi as “oreledigneur” (three records on bowindo, fringes, and fusetron.) a completely gorgeous mix of “concrète” atmospherics (each instrument was recorded in a different setting; bird & wind sounds mix with ringing telephones, etc...), minimal prepared/processed acoustic guitar playing, harmonium drones, and muttered vocals; all coming from a mind-set not too far from the jewelled antler universe (specifically the blithe sons.) awesome.
last visible dog press release...
renato rinaldi is hoarse frenzy.
giuseppi ielasi plays outdoor acoustic guitar in the first section.
manourin string trio plays harmonics on violin, viola and cello in the last section.
other instruments are acoustic and unplugged electric guitars, dulcimer, harmonium, organ, piano, objects, microphones and vocals.
often the tracks of each section are recorded in different places.

recorded during the summer of 2003 in oreno di vimercate, vienna and italy in various places very close to the slovenian border.
mixed in medves in october 2003.
thanks to giuseppi ielasi, daniela toneatto and all the medves people.
very special thanks to michael moser for his piano and house and to loris vescovo for his guitar.

a transborder collaborating album comprised of four leading figures in the world’s experimental music scene, which includes; roel meelkop whose musical activities date back to the 80's when he started thu20, and even now he still stands on the front line of holland’s electronic music scene; frans de waard, known as a representing artist in the european sound art scene thorough his projects such as staalplaat, kapotte musiek; giuseppe ielasi who organizes own label fringes recordings in italy; howard stelzer who organizes intransitive recordings in america. as if answering to their pieces, evala, an organizer of port, carefully added a bonus track by destructing and restructuring them, which came out as an outstanding remix with the ultrahigh-density. the achingly beautiful album floats between improvised and electronic music with a vibrantly disturbing quality.

july 2008 release ; excellent ep of deconstructed turntablism from composer giuseppe ielasi ...

this is pretty far removed from giuseppe’s overall modus of guitar-centric compositions, although i do recognize some of the polyrhythmic underpinnings from his last few häpna-label outings (that indescribably woozy, almost free-time feeling lilt is here in droves) ... some of this material comes off as a purely anti-dancefloor take on the whole basic channel / chain reaction oeuvre (w/schoolmap even going so far as to have d&m master the record !!!) or even the automatic pulse/beat-finding efforts of other berlinite producers such as errorsmith / smith n’ hack et.al ... really nice stuff.

giuseppe ielasistunt

format: 12” vinyl ep, full color cover, 6 tracks, 22 minutes, edition of 500 copies
cat no: school4
release date: july 7th, 2008

stunt’ is the first in a series of three ep’s which represent an interesting stylistic departure from ielasi’s previous work. the series is focused on the use of one turntable and a large selection of vinyl records as sources for raw material, and pulses/rhythm as main organisational principle. the basic sound material, in the form of short segments and loops or longer and more complex improvisations, was collected over the course of three months, using techniques influenced more by “turntablism”, than traditional sampling or plunderphonics. the raw sequences have then been edited and assembled in 6 tracks (more to follow...), whose structures are probably closer to house music productions than to ielasi’s more atmospheric and layered compositons from his earlier releases.

stunt was mastered and cut by rashad becker at dubplates & mastering, berlin. full color cover photo by italian artist amedeo martegani.

giuseppe ielasi, born in 1974, lives and works in milan, italy. he started playing guitar in 1988, and worked for many years in the area of ‘improvised music(long term collaborations with alessandro bosetti, michel doneda, ingar zach, dean roberts, thomas ankersmit). he has performed live with taku sugimoto, jerome noetinger, mark wastell, martin siewert, brandon labelle, nikos veliotis, gert-jan prins, phill niblock, oren ambarchi and many others. apart from extensive solo activities, ielasi is one half of bellows (with nicola ratti) and oreledigneur (with renato rinaldi). he released music on various labels such as erstwhile, bowindo, kning disk, sedimental (his first solo ‘plans’), hapna (‘gesine’ and ‘s/t’), 12k (the critically acclaimed ‘august’, also featured in the ‘best of 2007’ list for the wire magazine).

november 2007 release; the long-awaited reissue of eliane radigue’s 1971 piece “chry-ptus” :: presented here in two iterations: eliane’s own 1971 realization utilizing the buchla music box at nyu, and a contemporary recording/performance jointly realized by radigue herself (ca. 2001 @ ccmix in paris, assisted by stefano bassanese) and giuseppe ielasi (in 2006).

each realization contains two parts (the first track on each disc forming one pair; the second track the other...); these are intended to be played simultaneously but work just as well as individual halves... musically, the introduction of continuous-pulse rhythms (the mid-register twittering) into the purely synthesized/flowing timbres is something i haven’t heard from radigue (outside of “e=a=b=a+b” - another piece with two distinct parts intended for simultaneously/non-sync’ed play...)

as will all of radigue’s long-form electronic music, this is something you’ll want to immerse yourself in for extended durations... highly recommended for the lover of pure analogue sound & those patient enough to let this music in...

(ps. the sound-sample to your left consists of a minute-long stretch in the middle of a stereo-mixdown of the two 1971 radigue realizations of the piece mixed together...)

february 2007 release by the trio of michel doneda, giuseppe ielasi, and ingar zach, recorded in the studio, 2004, vandoeuvre-les-nancy.

somewhat contrary to giuseppe’s recent maximal work, this is sparse free-improvisation, each contributing their own array of extended technique-derived sounds. the music frequently touches down onto beds of tonality, with zach’s drum kit providing texture over pulse...

a gorgeous set providing clear evidence of a telepathic link between the players. highly recommended.

...

this trio features very distinct musical personalities and caught us off guard simply by its appearance at all, but we sure did smile when we heard it as we knew it would pack the goods. both zach (percussion) and doneda (reeds) lay sturdy frameworks with ielasi (guitar) adding an almost alien warmth to the group sound.

intense sonic impact yet transparent and sparse enough to navigate with alert senses the whole disc has an ambitious arc that one may miss when caught in the web.

doneda's comments: "the music unfolds from known materials, offering clues. the fleeting nature of the colors, tones, dynamics and rhythm coalesce and then dissolve. often, the sound seems to dig in an invisible soil, and then the quest stop, often at a new place but then another layer appears. each musician weighing the sounds in the most real sense... perfectly independent in a unique and definitive community without specific roles or hierarchy."

all true.

awesome solo electro-acoustic construct from giuseppe ielasi, recording-wise chronologically predating his recent (spring 2005) häpna-label solo record.

quite tonal (melodic, even), constructed mainly of processed guitar tones and occasional bits of muted, almost mike-ink-ish sub-bass thump & cool aleatoric cut-up percussion interspersed with instrument-body scrabbling and mego-lineage dsp.

an impressive and coherent sound-journey, very much in the musique concrète tradition, although filtered through contemporary, almost rockist chord structuring. superb.
sedimental press release...
a year and a half in the making, this remarkably dense and subtly musical effort marks a rupture/diversion in ielasi’s creative output. the intersection of electro-acoustic sonogrophies infused with fragments of melancholic melodies creates a near dizzying disorientation. in 1998 iealasi founded the well-respected fringes label, in order to document his own work as well as that of other artists. in addition to his work on fringes, he has recorded for such labels as leo and sonoris, erstwhile and absurd. he has performed live with taku sugimoto, jerome noetinger, dean roberts, thomas lehn, michel doneda and brandon labelle, domenico sciajno among many others.

a series of 7” records of 1 minute tracks and lock grooves. focus of each volume is on one particular instrument and on the ways in which invited artists address the specifics of duration as defined by the given format. duration here is not considered as a mere quantity of time, but as the subjective relations that we establish within time’s dimension.

twelve participants to the first two releases contribute one minute-long track and two locked grooves (of 1.8 seconds at 33.1/3 rpm). each record has six 1-minute tracks and twelve locked grooves. either approached as open works of art or just as dj tools, the records in this series straightforwardly demand an active mode of listening.

i/d/v 02, the second 7” in the series, focuses on a range of original approaches to guitar playing and recording. ian epps, kenta nagai, annette krebs, chris forsyth, giuseppe ielasi and koen holtkamp are all well-known for their idiosyncratic styles, and recognized as contemporary innovators of the instrument. various extended and traditional techniques are articulated in this compendium through electric, acoustic, twelve-string and fretless guitar.
