domenico sciajno: real time computer processing.
gert-jan prins: electronics, fm/am modulations.

recorded may 17th & 20th 2002 at steim studio, amsterdam.

"the d&b album" is the first re-drum & re-bass album from the electronic duo domenico sciajno and gert-jan prins. they are both wellknown in the world of experimental electronic music, and released cd's on erstwhile, fringes, and grob. on this album prins' analog shake-pulses and sweeps are directly plugged into sciajno's specific powerbook esthetics and vice versa. as a whole, the five pieces on this adventurous cd form a precision-combination of sharp computer energy, rocking selfmade electronics, and fluid music recombination-technics, creating a grinding-spatial-musical concept, which by times reminds of shine'o's & prinsjan's rhithmic and playtechnical backgrounds on drums and double bass

cor fuhler: ems synthi aks, turntables, mbiras
gert-jan prins: electronics, fm modulations, radio

cor fuhler and gert-jan prins are both prominent members of the european improv world. both live in amsterdam, yet their paths rarely crossed before they became involved in the initial incarnation of mimeo in 1997.

fuhler is primarily known for his work as a pianist, in ongoing projects with such mainstays of the dutch scene as han bennink, michael moore and tristan honsinger. he released a superb solo prepared piano cd in 1994, 7cc in io (geestgronden). in the flirts, fuhler manipulates sounds from turntables and mbiras, filtering them through an analogue synth. prins’ background is as a drummer, but over the past decade, he’s focused almost exclusively on electronic noise-based music, using radio and television transmitters to create a distinctive, physical sound. in 2000, he released a solo cd on grob, prins live, as well as a superb trio cd with thomas lehn and peter van bergen, e-rax-live at the bimhuis, on his own label, x-or. both fuhler and prins are also still members of mimeo.

since joining mimeo, fuhler and prins have worked more and more together, in and out of the band, and in early 2001, they recorded the flirts over the course of two studio sessions in amsterdam. the flirts combines a relentless yet subdued energy with an endless stream of fresh ideas, resulting in a cd that is seemingly chaotic, yet very musical.

the stunning packaging was entirely created by nyc-based designer friederike paetzold.

grob (germany) #grob 427 cd

peter van bergen / gert-jan prins / fenneszdawn” compact disc

  • dawn (41:41)
aquarius gave this one a pretty fierce 2/3 across the chest, we'll be a little more forgiving. alright, maybe there is, suddenly, a flood of fennesz-related-improv release-activity. maybe we'd all like him to spend a little more time in the studio cranking out those gorgeous non-realtime nugs. but dammit, in our book, he's a damn great improvisor. this trio with mid school vet peter van bergen and young upstart gert-jan prins is great to listen to. no surprises there...
grob press release...
prins/ van bergen/ fennesz - dawn (03.2002)

dawn is a classical improvisation record, everything but post modern. it was recorded at the legendary total music meeting of free music production in november 2000. dawn is a composition played off the cuff of nearly 42 minutes. all the highs and lows of a longer composition are on this recording: searching and finding, restrained groping and violent erupting....

the decisive factor, however, is that this music is played by people who have nothing or very little to do with this attitude, by gert-jan prins (see his solo record prins live, grob210), by the saxophone player and composer peter van bergen (ensemble loos but also projects with georg graewe or wolfgang fuchs) and by christian fennesz, one of the superstars of the electronica jet set (see his current mego cd endless summer; he can also be heard on the grob cd (also on mimeo-electric chair + table). via their strictly "electronic thinking" (one hears a saxophone, of course, but the appearance deceives), these musicians break away from the approach on musical material developed within free improvisation in the last 40 years. on the other hand, this thinking does not lead to a "clicks 'n' cuts" aesthetic, but rather to a musical process that has been worked hard for, provisional, not completed, but gripping at every moment: what will happen next? what is coming? what breaks off and grows anew afterwards? hybrid music.

peter van bergen: windinstruments, ewi, sampling, computer.
gert-jan prins: electronics, fm modulations.
christian fennesz: computer.

dawn is part of violence & precision, a special project by studio loos.
recorded on november 2, 2000 during the "total music meeting" at the "podewil", berlin.

1999 release ; domestic issue of the grob-labelqueue” disc, itself the debut from this keith rowe organized “orchestra” of electro-acoustic improvisors - an interchangable lineup (which differs from track to track here) involving peterpitarehberg, gert-jan prins, marcus schmickler, jérôme noetinger, cor fuhler, thomas lehn, christian fennesz, justin bennett, phil durrant, yannis kyriakides, and richard barrett, as recorded in germany & holland back in 1997 ...

these early meetings of the group have a certain “go for it” vibe that, imho, was smoothed out in later concerts (take it or leave it - personally i’m into the high percentage of “pile-ups” herein) ... but then again, aside from thom lehn (who sounds fantastic throughout - listen to the sound-sample for a few choice bleeps), i have a hard time making out most of the individual players, due to the number of redunant software & hardware processing & sampling algorithms being used at once throughout (remember, this was 1997 - i mean the g3 mac powerbooks could barely handle a single 16-bit 44.1k i/o stream w/ real-time processing ; much has changed in the intervening years) ...

while not the best representation of this particular group, it was most certainly the first disc of eai that many of us in the states got to hear, and such as it has a “time capsule” place in my heart ...
