geoff mullenalone and in a room” c35 cassette

  • alone and in a room (1)

  • alone and in a room (2)
  • alone and in a room (3)
june 2012 release ; ... achingly gorgeous crackle & tone-float antics from geoff, sourced to a trilogy of live dates in brook-lyne, brook-linn, and jurassic park over the past year ...

... without resorting to my usual stream of hyperbolically-infused profanity every time someone has the wise-beyond-their-years idea to issue summa geoff’s gelt, i’ll say that ... if you dug “accidental guitarsover, say, the recent draft tape, then this is continuation for you ...

absolutely impeccable, canonically perfect music ... highly recommended !!!
ekhein press release...

ek55-geoff mullen "alone and in a room" c35

a collection of live performances by providence, rhode island's geoff mullen. his first solo release for ekhein following a recent string of releases on the rel and draft labels. featuring sets at cafe fixe, zebulon, and the aviary as well as percussion sources by eli keszler (who features geoff on his recent "cold pin" lp on pan).

blurring the lines between tape collage and live instrumentation, mullen is no stranger to improvisation in the live setting, performing in many groups and collaborations over the years (and just recently going on his first european tour). his talent for creating minimal, at times deeply chaotic tension, yet maintaining complete control is without a doubt on full display here.

april 2009 ; after a thorough spring-cleaning sweep of the mms offices, geoff and i discovered a small stash of the individual components that made up this long o/p 2005 cd edition - geoff’s debut album & the swan song of my entschuldigen imprint (r.i.p.) ... glad to offer the last copies of this great disc again, at the original price-point ...

after a long wait (some would say too long) i’m extremely glad to present geoff mullen’s debut mass-market album, released on my own entschuldigen label. geoff and i have spent the greater part of the last 2 weeks meticulously assembling these bad-boys, making sure the drawstrings for the cloth bags were just so ; hand-gluing the artwork to the digipack front/back(s), cutting and cropping the photos, and finally inserting everything into resealable mylar bags and placing the stickers on front. a labor of love? most certainly. as this is geoff’s first “proper” release, we both wanted to make it special. and i do feel like we’ve succeeded!

here’s the original description i wrote regarding geoff’s private-issue version of this same record, and the “label copy” down in the “label description” section ::

one day the phone rang and it was geoff ... “hello... are you a record store?” “no, but i do have some records for sale... you’re welcome to come over... where are you right now” “two blocks away ...” and so i met geoff and his friend danny, sent them off back to allston with a few mementos after a nice nervous chat.

a few weeks later (although it could have been days) i heard a thump on my porch @ 3am, grabbed the broom handle and lept with a great huzzah at... nothing. the next morning when i left to go to rustica there was a cd-r taped to the door (this is not a rare occurence around here, something about the thought of my tuff beard must scare off certain creative elements just as they’re about to ring the doorbell) in an exquisite fold-out hand-screened cover with faulty-typography. being a callous bastard i promptly filed it and didn’t think much of it until a few months later when it lept, literally (as an artifact of the nature of geoff’s carefully handcrafted packaging it had attached itself to a copy of walter de maria’s “drums and nature” disc, which i was gently trying to pry from the grasp of said storage medium) from the overstuffed demo pile / music shelf / inbox ...

recognizing this as a sentient act by an otherwise lifeless object i opted to listen... and i’m very glad i did. geoff’s may very well be the best demo i’ve ever received (if the boxes of cdrs above my record shelves can be judged by volume alone i have received around 800 of them) for myriad reasons... it’s not idm, and in fact geoff does not use computers in the recording process (which, in this day & age is unheard of). i wouldn’t even classify geoff’s music as dance music, or even as any sort of post-dance-music hybrid (ambient electronica, mego-lineage abstraction, etc...) plus despite (and probably because of) his meager tools of trade (guitar, bias-altered amplifiiers, and various looping and delay boxes) it doesn’t sound wholly like anything one thing i’ve ever heard ... although there are certainly elements of things i hold dear (and this could be the pseudo-ephedrine talking but i imagine geoff listens to a great deal of sandy bull, loren mazzacane connors, jim o’rourke, and nick zammuto’s music) ...

so ... this here is a small-run edition of that first, fateful demo, which geoff graciously duplicated for the fine folks that shop here @ mms to check out. mr. mullen will soon be on to great things (the entschuldigen label, home of the forthcoming/recent hrvatski bootleg disc, at my behest, have signed geoff on for a single or two) and this is your chance to get than one fateful, truly handmade artifact before the hammer drops. i strongly urge you to do so...
entschuldigen press release...

geoff mullen :: guitar • banjo • electronics • amplification

“thrtysxtrllnmnfstns” is the debut release from guitarist-composer geoff mullen, containing a series of delicate thunderstorms scored for string instruments, bias-altered amplification and analog circuitry that at once recall both the slow-arc americana of the vanguard and takoma labels and the contemporary guitar-based minimalism and drone-work of fine folks such as rafael toral and fennesz ...

at times consisting of a lonesome, banshee-wail of carefully-plotted electric guitar feedback with what sound like vinyl run-out grooves; others a poly-rhythmic tapestry of improvised, repetitive acoustic lines and circuit-bent electronic skree, “thrtysxtrllnmnfstns” will find favor amongst advocates of drone-rock, free-folk, etc ...

1080 copies of “thrtysxtrllnmnfstns” were professionally replicated, then meticulously assembled over a gruelling two week period; each copy features two high quality giclee prints featuring detail of artwork by sarah powers glued to the front and back of a hand-stamped white paperboard/plastic digipak case, with a 3” x 4” cloth “parts bag” (with a bright orange drawstring and red threading) containing a selection of geoff’s own photographs and a printed info-sheet inserted into the literature pocket. this is all housed inside a crystal-clear re-sealable mylar sleeve affixed to which a miraculously-detailed sticker reads:

"geoff's first demo (now his first “real” release) may very well be the best demo i've ever received (if the boxes of cdrs above my record shelves can be judged by volume alone i have received approximately 800 of them) for myriad reasons; for one it doesn't sound wholly like any one other thing i've ever heard... although it certainly contains elements of various music(s) i hold dear (...and this could be the pseudo-ephedrine talking but i imagine geoff listens to a great deal of sandy bull, loren mazzacane connors, jim o'rourke, and nick zammuto's music)

mr. mullen will soon be on to great things (he has already performed at an amazing run of gigs in the providence and boston areas supporting acts such as black forest / black sea, tim hecker, nmperign, and others; plus he has contributed to the invisible pyramid / elegy box on last visible dog) so this is your chance to get that one last fateful handmade formative artifact before the hammer drops. i strongly urge you to do so" ...-keith fullerton whitman

this entschuldigen edition comes complete with • 38 minute 31 second two pantone-color printed professionally replicated audio compact disc • white paperboard / plastic digipak with two high-quality giclee prints featuring detail of artwork by sarah powers glued to the front and back • 3” x 4” cloth “parts bag” with a bright orange drawstring and red threading containing a selection of geoff’s own photographs and a printed info-sheet • miraculously-detailed sticker • re-sealable mylar sleeve

september 2012 release ; ... long-awaited collection of material(s) from the last yearsworth’ of eli keszler’s creative life, focusing both on his installation work (the inspired “collecting basin”, set up at the shreveport mspc new music festival, and “cold pin”, ditto, the boston center for the artscyclorama) and his ensemble pieces (featuring graphic scores as interpreted by a who’s who of new england musicians such as geoff mullen, greg kelley, reuben son, benjamin nelson, and many more) ...

... while i’ll concede that it feels a little early for a “career canonizing retrospective” as such ; it’s easierto not to take this as said, but rather a rather handy compiling of the work of eli’s that falls outside of his “free jazz / improv(as documented via the esp-disk’ & various collaborative sets w/ joe mcphee et.al) & more formless home-recordedmodes (i.e. everything he’s issued via his rel imprint) ...

... as eli gets more & more ambitious with his scope, this set proves full well his range & capacity with such large-scale projects ... there are very few people on earth working with such diverse means of organized sound in anywhere near eli’s level(s) of passion & elocution ...

... comes in a mini-gatefold-lp sleeve w/ silk-screened outer (just like the pan lp issues only ... smaller) ; highly recommended !!!

catching net is a collection of selected installations and compositions eli keszler created during the last two years. the double-cd set includes both stand-alone recordings of the installations and the integrated ensemble scores performed in conjunction with those installations. the first disc features two ensemble versions of cold pin, previously released in a 2011 lp of the same title on pan, plus a 26-minute, previously unreleased live ensemble recording (mixed sextet and piano quintet; these are captured in contrasting acoustical spaces).

the second disc begins with the title track, catching net, a 17-minute score for string quartet and piano with the cold pin installation. the score is fully notated, timed with stopwatch markings rather than tempo or meter. following are two recordings of keszler’s large-scale installations functioning on their own. collecting basin features piano strings / wires up to 250 feet long splayed from a two-story water tower in shreveport / louisiana, across two large, empty water purification basins, which acted as an amplifier for the sounds produced by the installation. a ‘solo’ version of cold pin (without live performers) concludes the album. tracks 1 and 3 on the first disc and track 2 on the second disc were recorded at the historic cyclorama, a massive dome at the boston center for the arts. cold pin was installed directly on a large curved wall in the dome, using micro-controlled motors and beaters to strike extended strings ranging in length from three to 25 feet.

born in brookline, massachusetts, visionary composer / percussionist / multimedia artist eli keszler began playing drums at eight, and composing at twelve. before finding an interest in experimental music and improvisation, he played in rock and hardcore bands; his work retains an intense physicality and churning, often ferocious energy. he is a graduate of the new england conservatory, where he studied composition with anthony coleman and ran blake. a self-taught visual artist, his aesthetic outlook owes as much to richard serra and robert smithson as it does to musical icons like xenakis, nancarrow, and ornette coleman. he has collaborated with phill niblock, roscoe mitchell, joe mcphee, loren connors, jandek, and many others, and has recorded more than a dozen cds and lps for esp-disk, rel, and pan.

keszler’s installations employ piano wires of varying lengths; these are struck, scraped, and vibrated by microprocessor-controlled motorized arms, giving rise to harmonically complex tones that are percussive yet resonant. these installations are heard on their own and with accompanying ensemble scores. said keszler in a npr all songs considered interview, “i like to work with raw material, like simple sounds, primitive or very old sounds; sounds that won't get dated in any way. i was thinking of ways i could use strings or acoustic material without using pedals or pre-recordings, so the live aspects appealed to me.” in addition, the patterns formed by the overlapping piano wires allow keszler to create visual components that relate directly to the music, without having to use projections or other electronic equipment.

the 2xcd is mastered by rashad becker at clunk, in a limited edition of 1000 copies. it is packaged in a pro-press digisleeve jacket which itself is housed in a silk screened pvc sleeve with extensive images from the installations, program notes, sketches of the installations, scores, electronic schematics from the projects, and accompanying drawings and artwork by eli keszler and bill kouligas.

geoff mullenaccidental guitars” long playing record

  • accidental guitars (1)

  • accidental guitars (2)
november 2011 release ; finally in stock !!!

... originating in a pair of concerts played in geoff’s native providence (one in a rope factory, one in cf’s storied operatheque) the subsequent recordings (made in the spaces with a comparably high-fidelity digital field recorder) were laterplayed along” with a number of times to an a-synchronous medium (cassette walkman, into which an electric guitar was directly plugged into the “mic” input) ... later still, the original room-fidelityrhythm track” was “aligned(although, not specifically so) with a pair of the tapedaccompaniments(panned left & right) and, voila, “accidental guitars” was born ...

... while this process may partially parallel brian ruryk’s, the resultant pan-fidelity / spatial crackle has virtually nothing to do with ruryk’s brand of mile-a-minuteguaifenesin blues” ; it’s slightly closer in spirit to mimeo’s “sight(there’s a similar, twombly-esque aesthetic at work here as well) only actively embracing chance as a partial compositional crutch than a holistic ethos ... the palpably deep image (again, crisp, but backgrounded elements cut with macro, but lo-fi foregrounds, rife with gain-staged “pumping”) gives the impression of a menagerie of miniature insectoid motion, made all the more impressive by geoff’s lexicon of fluttering preparations & extended techniques ...

... i love this record ; it captures geoff’s general approach to music in a way that had yet to be so well articulated on a tangible object... if you’re at all interested in the intersection(s) of “process music”, free improvisation, and the grayer areas of 21st century composition, i urge you to check this out (you’ll love it, trust me) ; highly recommended !!!

geoff mullen - accidental guitars - rel018
edition of 350

geoff mullen presents a new side of his ever-changing and open language, dealing here with his rawest material to date, and in many ways finding himself in a homecoming to the guitar. on ‘accidental guitarsgeoff expands his instrumental language with his unique variety of invented, accident-prone technique. re-contextualized live performances are filtered through an intuitive sense of form and pretexts, leaving us with an intense, jarring, pointed, and textural compositional language.

with little more than an electric guitar, he conjures abstract formations and clattering percussive tones that are starkly contrasted with tape hiss and sudden echoplex’d delay. sustains calm the mood throughout and create a beautiful and oddly soothing atmosphere that seems to move in all directions at once.

the music on ‘accidental guitars’ has an ability of creating form out of being lost, and achieves a lucidity through this sense. this record is a unique document, finding geoff between forms and excepted styles, and seeing him off, once again, in another new and exciting direction in his music.

rel press release...

oxtirn - live - rel017
edition of 300

oxtirn 'live' documents a performance in new york city, by the new trio of geoff mullen, ashley paul and eli keszler. following a score by keszler, the group performs on an array of instruments, using three guitars, drums, voice, auto-motorized harps, tenor harp, bass harp, microphones, clarinet, alto saxophone, crotales, drums and cymbals. the music drifts in a unique way between a wide variety of sounds, from incredible density of clattering metal textures and string attacks, wall of sound guitars, mechanical music, high pitched saxophone bends and an oddly dim shimmering high harmonic sound. all creating together, a harsh, jagged and angular wash of ricocheting materials. in other sections, metal and vibrating strings, crotales and horns create a calmer and high contrast atmosphere. in the end, the music evolves into an area of sustained sound, space and sparse gesture, featuring one of ashley paul's songs and vocals, where the music takes on a new formation, leaving the listener with a question mark, and in some way is a new form of intuitive song. the recording itself is a low fi document with a spacious, raw and aggressive timbre to it, adding to the already unique feel of the music.

the packaging is intricately designed with a multi-color silk screen, based on a drawing by eli keszler. the cd itself is housed in a multi panel, fold-out, metallic paper print with pictures from the concert and excerpts from the oxtirn score, with gold stamping on the outside of the metallic paper. the cd is attached to a hub which sits on top of liner notes, with an embossed design on the flip. oxtirn live is a one time special edition of 300 copies.

april 2013 release ; ... the long-awaited return of geoff mullen, heard here molding documentation recordings of a site-specific installation piece (itself something of a complex environment, echoing terry fox’s “culvert” in its transformation of field-recorded & in-situ events via self-regulating feedback-threshold systems) into a narrative work consisting of two side-length edits of re-captured room-toned elements, stray guitar / electronic channeling, and distant, slown-down emphases of assorted musical events into an inarguably complex interweaving of sonorities that, in my mind, approach the mythical mystery-ladenfeel” of charlie nothing’s “the psychedelic saxophone(both in tone & in the sheer number of unanswered questions that linger long after the record has been digested) ...

... a heady & immersive work ; highly recommended !!!

filtered water” by geoff mullen

gorgeous waves of serene ambience from new england innovator geoff mullen.

it has been three years since rhode island sound artist geoff mullen released the exemplary bongo closet, but he’s hardly been taking it easy in the interim. after a few small-run cassette releases and a string of dates in europe (both solo and in the oxtirn trio with pan’s eli keszler & ashley paul) he found some time to get stranded in the woods and craft this beguiling long-form record.

a mono recording of a multi-channel installation piece, filtered water is probably the most unusual addition to mullen’s catalog, and definitely the most hypnotic. recorded in the hudson valley, filtered water blends field recordings, feedback, and tape collage to create a deeply immersive sound environment. this is a record that reveals itself slowly, and uses the most spare of materials. everyday sounds like a passing train or a far off party are subsumed by the music, and the raw sounds of nature are tempered by electronic processes. luckily, mullen’s signature musical sensitivity prevents this extended experimental piece from ever becoming trying or indulgent. it is honest, textured sound and far more beautiful than a description can attest.

geoff mullen is one of new england’s most impressive sonic innovators, and filtered water offers a fascinating glimpse into his unique sound world.

august 2010 release ; awesome, luxury-oriented vinyl pressing of geoff’s crowning achievement !!!

to re-iterate ::

it’s amazing to think that geoff hasn’t released a proper full-length since 2007’s one-two punch of “armory radio” & (the criminally under-appreciated)dog daze of summer” ... enter luke moldof’s razors & medicine with the hook up, an alliance that led to this fantastic set of gauzy yamaha cs-50 fizz & burbling, echo-drenched guitar pieces ; both in & of geoff’s and only geoff’s whole private universe / concept-sector ...

while the opening track wades in familiar waters (classic geoff ; misted, filtered-out chord-cycling with an evident click-pulse) the second sounds like geoff’s trying to channel the same sort of gonzo / out-there logic of ned folkerth & mike pierry’s “deadbeat at dawn” score (i know for a fact said is a big touchstone) ; 10 minutes of backwards bongos (turns out the title’s not a red herring) and squeaking ring-mod circuit-juice ... the third piece is arguably the album’s highlight with a lovely modal guitar pattern overlaid with myriad synth & effects-layers ; very dense & quite rewarding ...

the second side picks up with some dusted guitar-echo patterns & spry, bell-like twinkle before cascading into some rather popol-vuh-esque sound-freeze before bringing things full circle ; geoff’s at the top of his game here & we’re all the richer for it ...

... going from luke’s pro-dub to this dubplates & mastering -fussed-over edition reveals myriad detail ; getting lost in the rippling static & endless analog gaze has never been easier ... comes coated in a brand-new design-spec (set in the same crumbling new paltz / borscht-belt hotel as “the shining” for some nice extra-musical cues) ; highly recommended !!!

bongo closet” by geoff mullen

a gorgeous, hazy journey through the psyche of geoff mullen.

providence, rhode island operative geoff mullen has been working beneath the popular music radar for some time now, putting his name to a number of limited cassettes, cdrs and vinyl albums. it is hardly surprising that in that time he has developed something of a cult following in the new england scene, with live performances (solo and together with keith fullerton whitman) and his own rare youth label garnering him a loyal throng of rabid fans.

using the guitar, synthesizer and a selection of well-developed processes, mullen has come up with a unique sound difficult to pigeonhole. throughout the album the sounds feel so effortlessly unified that one can completely forget the individual instruments themselves. it is hard to believe that the synthesizer used (the legendary yamaha cs50) is the baby brother of the cs80, heard so distinctively piped into deckard’s electric dreams in blade runner. the distant, dusty tones and pulsating rhythms bring to mind instead memories of early popol vuh or something altogether more defiant. as a veteran guitarist, writing ‘bongo closet’ was mullen’s search for different ways of playing music, and these weathered, deeply personal songs are the result. rich with emotion and surprisingly detailed, there is the sense that the technology never informs the creative process. mullen is using his chosen instruments without a care for what they can and can’t do – they are tools in the creation of his music, never the other way around.

bongo closet’ is an intensely human listening experience. teeming with life and breathing as it coughs and splutters, there is an unavoidable attachment felt almost instantly as a listener. this is music that drags you in and simply refuses to let go.

hi folks! couple of newsworthy items. first off, innature will now me available from keith fullerton whitman's online music sales site called mimaroglu music sales. stop by the website and check 'em out....they sell some great stuff. secondly...the praise for innature just keeps rolling in. here's a nice little review from the fine folks at fakejazz.com. and finally.....we mastered the fun years record this past weekend with our friend josh bonati. he worked his usual magic and the record sounds fantastic! we are so excited about this release and are hard at work putting together the packaging and preparing it for human consumption. stay tuned!

we have posted a little photo "how to get the sleeve out of the wallet" here for those of you who have purchased innature and are having difficulty getting the sleeve that houses the cd out of the main wallet. again we apologize for this inconvenience. we are taking measures to address the issue and all product leaving barge hq will be packaged with the sleeve free-floating in the wallet so that you my choose to use the insert if you wish. we hope the "how to" helps.

in other news....check out some of the reviews innature has been receiving in the press section of the site. there will be reviews in the november issue of the wire, signal to noise and resonance as well.

hi everyone! brg001/innature is finally released to the public. the street date was tuesday the 26th and should be available at your favorite record shop. if they don't have it....tell them to order it! you can also order direct from us on the catalog page using a major credit card or pay pal. if that doesn't suit your fancy it is available from ctd ltd., forced exposure, boomkat, ektro records, aquarius records and other music among others. dave and i are so happy about this record finally coming to fruition and would like to publicly thank all the artists who brought such fine music to the table...you are the cat's pajamas! i also wanted to let everyone know that we have had many comments not only about how great the line-up and music is but about how difficult the insert is to get out. we sincerely apologize about this slight production miscalculation. we liken it to eating fine oysters....though difficult to open, the rewards are well worth the effort...that is if you like oysters. i will be posting a little pictorial "how to" in the coming days...we hope this will be helpful to those with the good sense and taste to purchase this compilation.

anyway, now that innature is finally out we can turn a bit of our attention to brg 002 which will be a full-length from the incredible fun years. we have the final mixes in-house and are sorting out all the fun production stuff that goes into making records....and when i say fun...i'm not being sarcastic. dave and i live for this....just ask my wonderfully patient and forgiving wife.

03.26.2006update: brg 001 has officially been dubbed innature. the track listing is available in the catalog section. a street date has been confirmed for september 26th 2006.hopefully you were able to catch circle whilst they were touring the us. dave and i went to the nyc show and they were face-melting as usual. let's hope they come back soon.animal hospital is in the midst of booking a us tour for june. check animalhospitalmusic.com for details.i don't know about you, but i'm ready for some warm weather...this whole in like a lion, out like a lamb thing is bullshit. what happened to global warming?!01.15.2006

::brg 001/innature - how do i get this frickin' cd out?!::

if you have purchased innature recently you may have noticed that the inside sleeve that houses the cd is pretty difficult to get out of the wallet. we have an easy way of getting around this issue without damaging the wallet...please see below. we apologize for this miscalculation....we have addressed the issue and all cds that leave our "warehouse" will now be supplied with the insert floating between inside the wallet giving the customer the choice of using the sleeve or not.

about 50 went out without the sleeve at all. if you purchased one of these "special editions"and would prefer to have the inner sleeve, please email us and we will send you one on us. thanks for your patience and enjoy the music.

step 1:

open the wallet and grasp with your hand of choice as in the above photo.

step 2:

through the inside opening, insert your index and fore-finger into the slot minding the edges of the wallet.

step 3:

gently but with a bit of force push on the inner sleeve being careful not to tear the edges. you can use your thumb to apply pressure to cover panel. you will dent the inner sleeve slightly when performing this step...but the damage is minimal and adds to the character of the sleeve.

step 4:

pull on the tab that you just made from pushing the sleeve through and give'er a good tug.

step 5:

slides right out like a charm!

step 6:

viola! insert cd into home stereo device and set level volume anywhere between 6 and 8.

step 7 "the re-entry":

slide back in using the inner slot. should not feel as tight and goes in rather gently like every second time should.

step 8:

slide all the way in and repeat process when needed. it becomes much easier with each in and out and you'll find that it has a nice fit when it's broken in....like a good pair of jeans!

we apologize for any inuendo....it was just too easy.

please let us know if you have any problems....we're happy to help.

thanks for listening

xoxo
ian and dave

first release (...after a 7” single and a cassette) on geoff mullen’s rare youth label - a double-disc compendium of contemporary goings-on in the providence, ri area, as compiled, lovingly, by geoff himself.

unlike many other providence “scene” compilations that feature, say, artists now signed to load; or artists that are friends with dom “prurient” fernow, this offers a pretty damn subterranean overview of what’s bubbling just underneath the surface of providence’s musical collective consciousness...
rare youth press release...
v/a : rare youth – new music from providence, ri

2cd compilation

here it is…a year in the making…a collection of new music from one of the most fertile and constantly changing locales in the union. featuring over two hours of music and spread out over thirty-eight tracks, rare youth brings together some of the most exciting artists at work in providence right now: work/death, kites, black pus, xerxes, heart2heart, russian tsarcasm, blue shift, lazy magnet, byron house, teenage waistband, black forest/black sea, unicorn hard-on, synb, leif goldberg, siege engine, lucky dragons and many many more.

sequenced to highlight the great diversity of musical stylings in this small town, this cd takes you on a smooth ride down the many colorful roads of: power pop psych noise, abandoned dronescapes, reckless free improvisation, emo power electronics, late night elven dance music, epic psych rock, shredded throat guitar doom, john carpenter-esque synth despair, witty no-fi punkish noise, genuine teenage love songs, total garbage, marching bands, etc. etc.

with the attention that providence has received for being a hub of louder-than-life, experimental music / art, this compilation tries to provide an updated snapshot of the current subterranean goings-on. it includes many of the artists who are responsible for bringing such acclaim and attention to this small community - brian chippendale (lightning bolt, black pus), mat brinkman, leif goldberg, jo dery, christopher forgues - while also highlighting some of the new and young artists who are taking things in different and exciting directions - russian tsarcasm, alberich, heart2heart, blue shift, summer city, byron house. there are also a handful of tracks featuring visiting artists (pedestrian deposit, brian miller and kevin shields…).

hand-packaged in a double-cd gatefold sleeve, with original illustrations and design by christopher forgues - aka cf, kites, paper radio, low tide, fantasy empire, etc. (his work can also be seen in comics anthologies kramer’s ergot, the ganzfeld, paper rodeo).

compiled and edited by geoff mullen.

edition of 1000 copies.
