geoff mullenarmory radio” double long playing record set

october 2007 release; a double-lp reissue of geoff mullen’s second album, issued initially in a private-micro-edition just after his entschuldigen debut & before the last visible dog-label “air in pieces” disc...

armory radio” consists of four untitled side-long pieces, each with their own trajectory... whereas the first is a hazy, radio-static filled noise-fest, the second comes across as geoff’s long-lost musique concrète piece (squelch-infused, disembodied voice-loops float through the mix). the third is a blissed out electricity-addled drone (just gorgeous!), the fourth winds things down with a sparse piece utilizing elements from all of the above...

all four pieces have a tying bond; geoff’s unmistakable sound-set & execution, involving cross-wired amplifiers (the faint upper-register squeal of mismatched bias can be heard throughout), contact mic’ed guitars, shortwave radio, and delay/loop pedals.

in only a few years geoff has left a remarkable bread-crumb trail of unique music; this record only seals his status as one of the most consistently interesting providers of out-guitar/electronic drone-sound. i give this my highest recommendation.

geoff mullen - armory radio
brg 003

referencing an old providence armory in geoff’s neighborhood, armory radio is an ode to a specific chunk of time and space. originally self-released as a double cdr in very small quantity, this limited double lp version features new material combined with reworkings of the original cdr version.

departing from last year’s blues-influences the air in pieces, geoff surprises us once again with his creative diversity and his ongoing search for new sonic territory. at the start of the armory radio project in 2004 geoff found a busted boombox in the trash with a barely working short wave radio function on it. this roadside treasure was one of many found objects revived for unconventional reuse: handheld radios, cassette players and speakers which all play a role in structuring the album. this physical scavenging, along with other unplanned musical discoveries, led to the process-driven compositions on armory radio.

obsolete technology, found objects and a city’s architecture are a few of the repeating themes embedded in armory radio’s guitar-driven drones. geoff’s dramatic use of noise is prevalent as well, building thick fabrics of haze intertwined with fragmented feedback patterns that phase in and out with one another. comparisons could be drawn to the ethereal short-wave recordings of william basinski or phill niblock’s massive drones, but armory radio is more a volatile work; no doubt influences by the fertile noise underground in america (artists like aaron dilloway and prurient come to mind, although in not too literal a way).

first release on this new geoff-mullen curated label, formed to release a double-disc collection of providence-area goings on (still forthcoming, possibly in the fall.) this is a single room-tone electric guitar murkler, pressed onto two sides of a 7” record, housed in a very nice set of nepalese hand-painted paper with some print-gokko aktion on the front. a mysterious & foreboding entry into the geoff mullen discog; now growing at an alarming rate!

  • brain cloud iii (15:17)

may 2008 release ; a simply fantastic set of ensemble / piano / harpsichord drone pieces spearheaded by providence-area composer joe grimm (aka “the wind-up bird”) utilizing a variant of rhys chatham’s “choiring” to yield a heady array of overtone-magic ... performers on the two “brain cloud” takes include geoff mullen, scott “work/death” reber, luke “lucky dragons” fischbeck, and black forest/black sea’s jeffrey alexander and miriam goldberg.

one of the best discs i’ve heard this year ; highly recommended, esp. if charlemagne palestine’s whole “strumming music” ethos strikes a nerve/chord ...
spekk press release...

kk015 brain cloud joe grimm

the seed for this music was planted when i participated in one of glenn branca's 100-guitar symphonies. the sound was incredible: a deafening, electric choir incorporating so many voices that the each element was subsumed within the group sound.

but i was struck even more by the unrealized potential in branca's approach; the sound was separated into several identifiable voices, so that the impression given was of a conventional counterpoint-driven music. i wanted to make a particulate music that presented itself as a single mass of varying density, comprised of tens of thousands of individual events.

soon afterward, i began to immerse myself in the piano music of charlemagne palestine. i learned from him that when two notes share a particular frequency in their overtone series, that frequency can be made to sing out clearly -- a ghost tone, not played directly, but arising from the interactions among the directly played notes. i began to compose and improvise with this in mind -- i could sketch out desired pitches, and then arrange webs of lower pitches that coincided to produce those target pitches within their harmonic series.

this music deals with overtones. i listen not so much to the direct-played notes; instead, i let my mind wander through the web of throbbing harmonics that arise as a result of their interaction. there are obvious sounds on the surface of the music, but eventually my ears penetrate beneath the surface to where harmonics overlap in countless reinforcements and cancellations. i love the glowing acoustic haze that seems to hover above the obvious notes, and the sustained ghost tones that emerge and recede within that cloudy texture.

the brain cloud pieces are through-composed according to the principles of overtone confluence and particle density. there are no special electronics on these recordings -- the humming sounds are the result of the acoustical interaction of voices, violins, horns, and above all, piano (brain cloud iii was recorded live with three pianos, each played by three people; 18-handed piano). the harpsichord interludes are solo improvisations for harpsichord, equalizer, and slight delay.

an auspicious start for this brooklyn-based label...

hi folks! couple of newsworthy items. first off, innature will now me available from keith fullerton whitman's online music sales site called mimaroglu music sales. stop by the website and check 'em out....they sell some great stuff. secondly...the praise for innature just keeps rolling in. here's a nice little review from the fine folks at fakejazz.com. and finally.....we mastered the fun years record this past weekend with our friend josh bonati. he worked his usual magic and the record sounds fantastic! we are so excited about this release and are hard at work putting together the packaging and preparing it for human consumption. stay tuned!

10.03.2006

we have posted a little photo "how to get the sleeve out of the wallet" here for those of you who have purchased innature and are having difficulty getting the sleeve that houses the cd out of the main wallet. again we apologize for this inconvenience. we are taking measures to address the issue and all product leaving barge hq will be packaged with the sleeve free-floating in the wallet so that you my choose to use the insert if you wish. we hope the "how to" helps.

in other news....check out some of the reviews innature has been receiving in the press section of the site. there will be reviews in the november issue of the wire, signal to noise and resonance as well.

09.27.2006

hi everyone! brg001/innature is finally released to the public. the street date was tuesday the 26th and should be available at your favorite record shop. if they don't have it....tell them to order it! you can also order direct from us on the catalog page using a major credit card or pay pal. if that doesn't suit your fancy it is available from ctd ltd., forced exposure, boomkat, ektro records, aquarius records and other music among others. dave and i are so happy about this record finally coming to fruition and would like to publicly thank all the artists who brought such fine music to the table...you are the cat's pajamas! i also wanted to let everyone know that we have had many comments not only about how great the line-up and music is but about how difficult the insert is to get out. we sincerely apologize about this slight production miscalculation. we liken it to eating fine oysters....though difficult to open, the rewards are well worth the effort...that is if you like oysters. i will be posting a little pictorial "how to" in the coming days...we hope this will be helpful to those with the good sense and taste to purchase this compilation.

anyway, now that innature is finally out we can turn a bit of our attention to brg 002 which will be a full-length from the incredible fun years. we have the final mixes in-house and are sorting out all the fun production stuff that goes into making records....and when i say fun...i'm not being sarcastic. dave and i live for this....just ask my wonderfully patient and forgiving wife.

03.26.2006update: brg 001 has officially been dubbed innature. the track listing is available in the catalog section. a street date has been confirmed for september 26th 2006.hopefully you were able to catch circle whilst they were touring the us. dave and i went to the nyc show and they were face-melting as usual. let's hope they come back soon.animal hospital is in the midst of booking a us tour for june. check animalhospitalmusic.com for details.i don't know about you, but i'm ready for some warm weather...this whole in like a lion, out like a lamb thing is bullshit. what happened to global warming?!01.15.2006

hi all. barge recordings is pleased to announce the world-wide release of brg 001. a compilation of epic proportions bringing together some of the finest musical talents from the us, canada and europe. the cast will include: circle, polmo polpo, geoff mullen, the fun years, bird show, loren mazzacane connors, tim hecker, the kallikak family, animal hospital and mgr. we are ecstatic to be working with such an amazing group of artists and would like to thank all of them for their contributions....it's going to be a great record. the tbd titled compilation will be on store shelves in the spring of 2006. please tell your local record store proprietor to order a handful....it will only reflect poorly upon him/her if it is not prominently displayed in their establishment.

we are hard at work here at barge world hq. designers are being "commissioned", coffee is being gulped, sleep is being lost and girlfriends are getting "edgy".

please check back periodically for updates. this site is still under a constant state of flux. we are html challenged lunk-heads....but we're doing all we can to make this an enjoyable and educational world-wide web experience. feel free to drop us a line with any questions or comments.

thanks.

::brg 001/innature - how do i get this frickin' cd out?!::

if you have purchased innature recently you may have noticed that the inside sleeve that houses the cd is pretty difficult to get out of the wallet. we have an easy way of getting around this issue without damaging the wallet...please see below. we apologize for this miscalculation....we have addressed the issue and all cds that leave our "warehouse" will now be supplied with the insert floating between inside the wallet giving the customer the choice of using the sleeve or not.

about 50 went out without the sleeve at all. if you purchased one of these "special editions"and would prefer to have the inner sleeve, please email us and we will send you one on us. thanks for your patience and enjoy the music.

step 1:

open the wallet and grasp with your hand of choice as in the above photo.

step 2:

through the inside opening, insert your index and fore-finger into the slot minding the edges of the wallet.

step 3:

gently but with a bit of force push on the inner sleeve being careful not to tear the edges. you can use your thumb to apply pressure to cover panel. you will dent the inner sleeve slightly when performing this step...but the damage is minimal and adds to the character of the sleeve.

step 4:

pull on the tab that you just made from pushing the sleeve through and give'er a good tug.

step 5:

slides right out like a charm!

step 6:

viola! insert cd into home stereo device and set level volume anywhere between 6 and 8.

step 7 "the re-entry":

slide back in using the inner slot. should not feel as tight and goes in rather gently like every second time should.

step 8:

slide all the way in and repeat process when needed. it becomes much easier with each in and out and you'll find that it has a nice fit when it's broken in....like a good pair of jeans!

we apologize for any inuendo....it was just too easy.

please let us know if you have any problems....we're happy to help.

thanks for listening

xoxo
ian and dave

bravo last visible dog, well done. here is a six cd box set (priced for less that most labels’ triple-disc sets) containing side-length suite from pretty much a who’s who from within the universe the label documents (contemporary finnish bedroom psych, new zealand cassette culture, etc...) just perfect segments from all; outstanders include geoff’s piece (way to go geoff!), the keijo piece(s) (intruiged; need to learn more), and those of loren chasse and renato rinaldi. consider this the lexicon that will ultimately unlock the door(s) to myriad avenues of contemporary musical thought... pure magic.
last visible dog press release...
lvd's second compilation and spiritual successor to drunken fish's harmony of the spheres box (ep length submissions), but instead of 6 artists, there are now 31. the set features all exclusive material, and the total running time clocks in around 7 hours and 36 minutes. this compilation, like the first invisible pyramid comp (2003), finds its inspiration in the writings of loren eiseley (naturalist, anthropologist, and essayist); for whom an elegy to the first victims of the still-escalating wave of man-made mass extinction seemed appropriate. each artist has dedicated their track to a recently extinct species (with a short bio), and jeff knoch (urdog) has written a substantial essay to accompany the set.

first release (...after a 7” single and a cassette) on geoff mullen’s rare youth label - a double-disc compendium of contemporary goings-on in the providence, ri area, as compiled, lovingly, by geoff himself.

unlike many other providence “scene” compilations that feature, say, artists now signed to load; or artists that are friends with dom “prurient” fernow, this offers a pretty damn subterranean overview of what’s bubbling just underneath the surface of providence’s musical collective consciousness...
rare youth press release...
v/a : rare youth – new music from providence, ri

2cd compilation

here it is…a year in the making…a collection of new music from one of the most fertile and constantly changing locales in the union. featuring over two hours of music and spread out over thirty-eight tracks, rare youth brings together some of the most exciting artists at work in providence right now: work/death, kites, black pus, xerxes, heart2heart, russian tsarcasm, blue shift, lazy magnet, byron house, teenage waistband, black forest/black sea, unicorn hard-on, synb, leif goldberg, siege engine, lucky dragons and many many more.

sequenced to highlight the great diversity of musical stylings in this small town, this cd takes you on a smooth ride down the many colorful roads of: power pop psych noise, abandoned dronescapes, reckless free improvisation, emo power electronics, late night elven dance music, epic psych rock, shredded throat guitar doom, john carpenter-esque synth despair, witty no-fi punkish noise, genuine teenage love songs, total garbage, marching bands, etc. etc.

with the attention that providence has received for being a hub of louder-than-life, experimental music / art, this compilation tries to provide an updated snapshot of the current subterranean goings-on. it includes many of the artists who are responsible for bringing such acclaim and attention to this small community - brian chippendale (lightning bolt, black pus), mat brinkman, leif goldberg, jo dery, christopher forgues - while also highlighting some of the new and young artists who are taking things in different and exciting directions - russian tsarcasm, alberich, heart2heart, blue shift, summer city, byron house. there are also a handful of tracks featuring visiting artists (pedestrian deposit, brian miller and kevin shields…).

hand-packaged in a double-cd gatefold sleeve, with original illustrations and design by christopher forgues - aka cf, kites, paper radio, low tide, fantasy empire, etc. (his work can also be seen in comics anthologies kramer’s ergot, the ganzfeld, paper rodeo).

compiled and edited by geoff mullen.

edition of 1000 copies.
