alone in the dark wood is the fifth full-length release from west philly-based solo artist tara burke aka fursaxa who boasts a fan base with the likes of bardo pond, acid mothers temple and thurston moore who released a record by her on his ecstatic peace! imprint.

a previous member of the band un, burke is now one of the epicentres and key collaborators of the north american free-folk movement, along with such luminaries as jack rose, charalambides, ben chasny and the jewelled antler collective. with her hypnotic, echo-y churchbell chanting, burke possesses a power-filled vocal sound that harkens back not only to those other polar queens of disaffected freakout psychedelia nico and barbara manning, but she is also akin to and inspired by hildegard von bingen, the 12th-century benedictine mystical abbess.

with the low drone of chord organ and farfisa, detuned ringing guitar, and endlessly looped, multiply-tracked vocals applied with heaps of delay, fursaxa sounds like a tripped-out medievalist perched upon a poppy petal. alone in the dark wood, recorded half in pennsylvania, half in finland, evokes pale moonlight and deep shadows, where tree limbs bend to form cathedral arches over a procession of mystics. disembodied female voices rise like sacral fire-smoke amongst the strum of mandolin, balalaika, and the piper's call of bells and flute-whistle. at some turns mournful and stark, at others a celebratory invocation, alone in the dark wood displays burke's alchemical knack for turning folk into lo-fi, and then into sheer psych and back again, but more importantly, her music is pure humming narcosis.

the valerie project
dc352 2xlp

joseph gervasi and i had been talking about doing a synergistic film/music project for some time, and both of us brought up valerie. it so happened that joseph owned a 16mm print of the film. i was blown away by its dreamlike imagery, old-world purity, psychedelic candor and mesmerizing soundtrack.

greg weeks (of espers) is describing the genesis of a new musical review entitled the valerie project. inspired by a classic of czech new wave cinema, jaromir jiresvalerie and her week of wonders (1970), greg, joined by members of espers and other philadelphia groups such as fern knight, grass, fursaxa, timesbold, woodwose and rake (as well as enigmatic electronicist charles cohen), conceived a new soundtrack to the film.

valerie and her week of wonders is allegorical coming of age film; a work populated by bewitched earrings, weasels, vampires, frisky maidens, friskier huntsmen, wicked aunts, bespectacled eagles and the handsomest mustache this side of 1970, the year the film debuted.

key to the valerie project’s conception is how reframing the film’s action with an alternate soundtrack draws new interpretations from a work of depth and changeable meaning. lubos fiser’s original score is lovingly recalled and ambitiously targeted by the group as a sound cycle to be equaled every time they play it. the tone is dense and ornate, expansively acid-charged — “a symphonic version of magma” at its zenith.

in particular, the film’s themes of lost innocence and pastoral living struck a chord with weeks and his fellow players. “there’s a current movement towards responsible living ... a need and desire to reorient to a world that is too chaotic, too oppressive, too technologically stifling,” says weeks. “it’s a new version of the ‘back to the land’ phenomenon only with lessons learned. valerie taps into so much of that. it projects a political and cultural message that is all the more relevant today.

tau emerald - travellers two - cd
imprec172 - cd

travellers two is a full length recording from the duo of tara burke (fursaxa) and sharron kraus. together kraus & burke create an ethereal record of dark-folk magic.

tara burke and sharron kraus were due to travel to finland together for a week but missed the flight, so instead they decided to spend the week recording together and travellers two is the result. the time was spent out in the fields, visiting burial mounds, and then coming back to sharron's home studio to work. they had played previously together and done some recording but this is the first time an album was conceived.

fursaxa is tara burke. formerly a member of the siltbreeze band un, tara started her fursaxa project in 1999 after un disbanded. after being a long time resident of philadelphia, tara decided to leave the "city of brotherly love" for the touring life. so from april 2005-april 2006 she toured extensively throughout the uk, the usa, and europe with friends and fellow musicians jack rose, sharron kraus, alexander tucker, christina carter, marcia bassett, and the spires that in the sunset rise, to name a few. for her live performances she uses mostly looped vocals, flutes, and percussion, a casio keyboard, guitar, and mandolin, in an attempt to transport her audience into the ethereal realms. on her forthcoming album alone in the dark wood she employs a myriad of instruments such as mandolin, guitar, violin, banjo, balalaika, organ, bells,, flute, percussion, and voice. this album was recorded and mixed in finland and pennsylvania. tara has recently been collaborating with several other musicians. espers member helena espvall and tara have a duo called anahita, and in 2006 released arcana en cantos on the deserted village label from ireland. they are currently working on their second release. currently, fursaxa is playing and recording her music in the rural hills of pennsylvania.

sharron kraus is a singer/musician/songwriter who creates music rooted in the folk traditions of england and appalachia. her work is characterized by soil-rich vocals, haunting banjo, fine acoustic guitar and visionary wordcraft. her songs are populated by a carnival array of fatally charismatic characters, telling tales of enslavement, perversion, incest, obsession, love and death. sharron’s live performances are stark, compelling, and delicate. as with her music, her performance continues the tradition of the balladeer. she is like the roving storyteller, bringing tales of terror, sadness and joy to a stranger’s hearth on a dark and stormy night.

sharron’s debut album beautiful twisted was released by australian psych label camera obscura in 2002 and received rave reviews around the world. it was listed in rolling stone magazine’s critics’ top albums of 2002. after touring with us psychedelic folk band the iditarod, she collaborated with them on an album of wintry songs and soundscapes entitled yuletide and released by avant/experimental label elsie and jack in 2003

sharron’s second solo album, songs of love and loss, was recorded at home in oxford and at dungeon studios in the cotswolds. the album features jane griffiths on fiddle and viola, jon fletcher on harmonica and occasional guitar, banjo and vocals, colin fletcher on bass, as well as bbc folk award-winning fiddler jon boden and grammy-nominated early music violinist giles lewin. the album was finished in providence and mixed with jeffrey alexander (the iditarod, black forest/black sea). songs of love and loss is a natural follow-up to beautiful twisted, in places darker and more discordant, in others gentler and sweeter.

other recent and ongoing collaborations include the black dove, an album written and recorded with californian folk songsmith christian kiefer; tau emerald, a duo with tara burke (fursaxa) and leaves from off the tree, an album of traditional songs recorded with meg baird and helena espvall released on bo’ weavil recordings.

sharron has been featured in the wire, dirty linen, new folk sounds, arthur magazine, ptolemaic terrascope and broken face. she has been interviewed on bbc radio 3 for ‘a place called england’ discussing the future of english folk music and recorded sessions for bbc radio scotland, freakzone on radio 6, and independent radio stations across the us. her fanbase includes veteran folkies shirley collins and archie fisher as well as indie figureheads michael gira, david tibet and sonic youth’s thurston moore.

espers are a boy/girl/girl trio from philly featuring singer/songwriter greg weeks, meg baird and brooke sietinsons who combine the elemental sound of acid-folk with the baroque arrangements of late 60s chamber rock.

fully versed in the sumptuous vernacular of drug music, the cradle of appalachian song, and the succinct truths of the three-minute pop ballad, their full length debut is an irresistible collection of sweet and subtle songs essential for fans of fairport convention, pentangle, jackson c. franck, bread, love & dreams and bert jansch.

espers are the sound of the new weird america the way it should be heard -- with the ease, infectious grace and absolute beauty of an ever expansive trio bound for ever greater pastures.

[ab-oc-25] avarus - vesikansi

49 minutes of gooey new goodness from avarus - spread over just three tracks. in the last year, finland's experimental underground has successfully overtaken the freak music world, and for damn good reasons. from the same tattered coven of piss drinkers who alternately refer to themselves (depending on who shows up to record) as kemialliset ystävät, lau nau, pylon, islaja, es, kiila or the anaksimandros comes this, another secret eye release from the mighty avarus - a follow-up to last year's jättiläisrotta. these fumbling finns conjure a smoky, shit-drunk forest of noise, folk and unsurpassable tribal improv. features guest vocals and casio from tara burke (aka fursaxa) recorded live in ireland.

december 2008 release ; holy grail time here folks ...

by the time i was made aware of just what a treasure trove the “jewelled antler cd-r library” series (released, one a month, during 2003) was, the discs in question were long unavailable, banished to the realm of myth & mystery, their hand-drawn artwork(s) relegated to .jpg files on assorted discography pages ...

lo and behold, the wise ones over at porter records (a young label, known primarily for their free jazz releases by the likes of henry grimes, odean pope, and khan jamal) saw some unjustice in this inavailability & set out to once again make this series, largely responsible for launching the career(s) of kemialliset ystävät, fursaxa, uton, dead raven choir, claypipe, and any number of the various combinations of the key jewelled antler players (loren chasse, glenn donaldson, steven r. smith, and rob reger) available to the discerning connoisseur who, like me, was largely unaware of this music as it was unfolding ...

the label has done a bang-up job, squeezing the entire contents of all 12 mini-cdrs onto four discs (with bonus material(s) from the shadowy the ways of god to man exclusive to this set) and housing everything inside a foil-stamped box along with a series of 14 double-sided, full-color cards (detailed below) reprinting the original designs and themes ...

easily one of my top releases of 2008, a life-saver for the latter-day jewelled antler fanatic ; highest recommendation !!!
