... i have to admit that i’ve been (unfairly) avoiding mr. zuydervelt’s work in relation to the mms stock-pool ; mainly as, in the grand scheme of “the prolifics” - he’s right up there w/the merzbows & lópez’s of this world (& the next) ... but then recently i’ve had the chance to sit down & investigate his work and, lo and behold, for the larger part, it’s pretty great ; near-static walls of digital sound w/hints of fennesz-lineage chord-shapes almost post-rock progressions ...

this collab. w/frans de waard is certainly no exception, a pair of extended “remixes” of a 1-minute solo hawaiian slack-key guitar piece by martin luiten - touching on similar themes as the recent (and just as excellent) m.b. / jozef van wissem duet ... very nice stuff ...
low point press release...
freiband & machinefabriek - oahu

oahu’ is a collaborative release between dutch sound artists freiband (the latest project of frans de waard, founder of the korm plastics label and member of kapotte muziek, beequeen and goem to name but three) and machinefabriek (the prolific rutger zuydervelt).

the genesis of the project was a 90 second recording of improvised acoustic lapsteel (the oahu of the title) played by martin luiten. from this initial recording, segments of music, each lasting 30 seconds in length, were created then passed back and forth between de waard and zuydervelt over a period of four months for further processing, editing and refinement.  finally, with a collection of 20 of these segments, each artist composed their own 20 minute mix using these pieces.

though the nature of processing and reprocessing applied to the initial recording of the lapsteel makes it at times almost unrecognisable, the harmonic and melodic essence of the instrument is retained and utilised throughout.  and whilst unified by the source material at their disposal, these two tracks have a distinct feel and identity that manage to perfectly encapsulate the work of both artists.

cd packaged in a matt printed digipak case. ltd edition of 450 copies.

008 freiband & colin tudor - pantones (3" cdr)

colin was one of the founding members of zion train and a regular visit to the amsteram shop i was once at. he liked experimental music and one day mailed me a bunch of sound material from his solo project pantonal. i reworked them, but didn't mix it, which i left for colin to do. he did it, quite nicely, and it has been several years with some label, who didn't go about to release, for whatever reason i don't know. but here it is, missing one mixed track, but hey, i'm only doing 3"s and business cards. rhythm glitch music, or some such.

006 freiband - kapotte muziek by... (businesscard cdr)

one day i was invited to play a solo concert as kapotte muziek, almost to coincide with the twenty years of existence of kapotte muziek, in october 2004. the recordings of that concert have been worked through extensively and found, at least for a while, a place in my freiband set, as a sort of free form improvisation. the final mix on this business card was recently made and is by no means the end of it.

that lovely twenty minute piece that was previously released by twenty hertz in their 'drone works' series, but since it's discontinued, i thought it would be a good idea to do a 'repress', this time on a 3" cdr, with a somewhat different cover (from the same series of photographs actually).

originally the first four parts were to be released on a compilation by ideal records, but after having the piece for two years, they decided they wanted some drone music, which this is not. i added two more parts and now it becomes available again. it's a bit harsher than normally. it is said that the first freiband cd, 'microbes' was my first laptop album - but it was not; it was my last 'analogue' release. 'ice field' reworks the same material as on 'microbes' but now in an entirely digital environment.

the reason for starting this little enterprise. a studio version of a piece presented on june 3rd 2007. a short concert with this piece, being a remix of dagpauwoog, the local sad song trio which stopped their activities. while rehearsing this, i thought it would be a pity not to have some sort of documentation but with the length of seventeen minutes, it would be an oddity to fit on a full length.

freiband - all in a day's work c90 (pineapple tapes 07)

freiband is frans de waard's solo computer music project. frans joined ifco for a short european tour and these recordings "should be seen as a remix of idea fire company from march 2006".

two side-long (39' 39" each) tracks. 'faster but slower' is a beautiful sad shimmering piece that slowly, very slowly, changes. active, but stuck in a cotton-wrapped slow motion world. 'a solo duo' is darker and starker, and contains additional active elements. the last half hour of a spaceman: engines droning, electromagnetic distortions on the radio. lonely and alone. excellent! and, a fine cover painting- an expressionist work by elise de waard.

may 2003 double dream date with a good chunk of the more ‘relevant’ akts in contempo-tronica taking on one of mr. akita’s better ‘digital age’ efforts. frighteningly high signal-to-noise-to-signal ratio when pitted against other recent all-star remix efforts. very odd lineup given the source material (bola?) but a substantial work transcending mere remix-compilation status...
important press release...
artists were asked to use merzbow's album amlux (imprec-02) as an instrument in an original composition, rather than to perform the conventional remix. we hoped that this would allow the artist to flourish with greater creative freedom and a less restrictive context. we didn't want to fit this project into any sub-genre of music. we wanted it to simply exist. perhaps the beat oriented tracks, record scratching and vocals will annoy some noise purists, and perhaps the noisy sound collages will irritate others, but hopefully this collection of tracks from some of the best electronic artists working today will enlighten the listener. music is sound and sound is everywhere, regardless of classification.

various artists - 'epitaph for john'
kp 3016 full length cd

over the course of his life john watermann worked with almost every conceivable artistic medium. in many ways, he was the epitome of the "total artist"; almost every element of his life being in some way his own artistic project.

as a young man in his native germany he worked as a photographer and documentary filmmaker, also etching, painting and writing. his experience as a youth in germany in the second world war influencing his work from then right through until his death.

following his move to australia watermann worked as jeweller, opening a number of shops in sydney with his longtime australian partner barbara heath (an accomplished jeweller in her own right) and meanwhile continued to write, paint and even sculpt. eventually, after traveling the east coast of australia in a self-built sailing boat, watermann settled in brisbane and began to produce his music.

he first released his music in 1989 in the form of the album "warmth is the fifth room". like most of his releases, the cassette appeared in a run of very few copies on his own label "nightshift", and was consequently almost impossible to find.

over the next 10 years he released numerous albums and contributed to a number of compilations, both under his own name as a solo artist, in collaboration with others (such as merzbow) and under a number of pseudonyms (including radio mull, spinal machine and total disease). also, apart from his music, in the 1990s he created an interactive cd-rom work "rose is a rose" and published the webzine "lean yellow supporting".

sadly, on april 2nd 2002 john watermann died suddenly of an infection resulting from his ongoing treatment for cancer. having in the final year of his life returned to painting and writing (alongside a burgeoning interest in cooking), he still had vast plans for future projects.

among these unfulfilled projects were plans to collaborate with frans de waard on a new release. although only preliminary discussions on the collaboration took place and watermann never completed any work towards the project, watermann's source material that was to be the basis of the work now serves as a basis for this tribute release.

despite his vast artistic output, watermann has been known almost exclusively for his music and even then his work remains largely undiscovered, perhaps for no other reason than its sheer unavailability. in many ways watermann could be considered a classic example of the artists' artist, his work influencing many far more prominent sonic alchemists. and perhaps then this release serves as a record of watermann and his influence, documenting the respect he reserved from his peers and, hopefully, introducing his work to a new audience.

- ben byrne

this cd contains the original soundwork sent to frans de waard by john watermann, reworkings thereof by asmus tietchens, ralf wehowsky, merzbow and freiband.
