pillow
plays brötzmann
cd / b-boy 024

how to improvise on an existing work of improvisation? american outfit pillow took the plunge by carefully placing european free jazz legend peter brötzmann’s group improvisation piece images on the rack. don’t expect any tortured notes or twisted chords, though, as pillow respectfully and patiently square up to brötzmann’s music. written especially for his tentet and released on okkadisk, images is one of brötzmann’s most meditative collective works of improvisation. tentet member and cellist fred lonberg holm took up the challenge and together with his pillow quartet breathed new live into the composition, and a completely new piece of music is born.

the reflective mood of brötzmann’s original is admiringly kept intact in pillow’s interpretation, considering that it’s constructed in eleven parts. apart from lonberg holm, pillow is: liz payne (bass, viola and percussion), michael colligan (tubes and dry ice) and ben vida (trumpet and guitar) from minimalist post-rock band town and country. the quartet strives for tight harmony in the tradition of classic sixties improv groups like amm and mev. the totality of sound is paramount and individual proclivities and the virtuoso solo performances are wisely avoided.

plays brötzmann reveals a quartet in full flow; predominantly calm, trance-inducing improvisations will occasionally veer off at unexpected angles, but they rarely loosen their grip on the listener. in this twilight world, the music levitates between modern classical, free improv and melancholic post-rock. impressively, these musicians have managed to dose the ingredients taken from the storerooms of their respective musical backgrounds for the preparation of images to perfection. among such ingredients are ominous strings, wistful guitar riffs, gamelan-like sequences and crashing cymbals. the listener is a traveller in a fascinating soundscape where unexpected musical horizons suddenly appear within reach.

never enough hopethe gift eceonomy” compact disc

contraphonic press release...
never enough hope is the brainchild of chicago-based composer/improviser tobin summerfield.

summerfield's most notorious work has come with chicago's crush kill destroy, and detroit-based larval (cuneiform records). as an active member on the chicago free music scene as well, summerfield regularly plays alongside folks such as frank rosaly, aram shelton, jaimie branch, keefe jackson, fred lonberg-holm, and many others. his aesthetic employs the entire spectrum of the diverse groups he contributes to, moving from the collective voice of rock, post-rock and punk; new york no wave minimalist/maximalist extremes; joyful big band theatricality; highly orchestrated new music soundscapes; and powerful, dense, freewheeling improvised music to lush, thick polytonal/polyrhythmic textures.

never enough hope is the synthesis of summerfield's outlook: the emotional immediacy of free music matched and balanced by the satisfaction derived from great composed music. the gift economy, never enough hope's contraphonic debut, is born of summerfield's desire to harness all these experiences into one unit. utilizing both rock and free-music idioms into the orchestration, which takes shape in the form of a 20-piece ensemble featuring scores of saxophones, vibraphones, and violins, mingling with guitar, bass, trumpets, and dual drum kits, it's in the precise voicing of every individual instrument that gives never enough hope its weight.

summerfield composes with each member of the ensemble in mind--player, improviser, and composer--all their unique voices represented. the musicians in never enough hope are summerfield's peers, heroes and teachers. the songs and experiences that inspire the pieces featured on the gift economy are born of its constituents. never enough hope is like a family reunion, and an all-star team.

  • eureka (9:11)
  • happy holidays (1:36)
drag city press release...
jim o'rourke's reputation as an inaccessible avant-garde music boffin is shattered by the beguiling charm of eureka. after more than a decade of abstraction, experimentation, and improvisation, o'rourke unleashed this playful curveball as if to prove he was human after all. lush and complex arrangements decorate these slightly bizarre songs. the nearest comparison is probably van dyke parks's 1968 magnum opus song cycle. both albums are richly rewarding if you're prepared to persevere beyond the initial strangeness.

nimble acoustic guitars dominate the trance-like opener "women of the world" (written by deadpan scottish absurdist ivor cutler). o'rourke is a classically trained multi-instrumentalist, and his playing is imaginative and full of rich texture, but there's nothing po-faced about eureka. a light and happy mood is sustained throughout the album. the latin-flavored "something big" takes its cues from the exotic pop of esquivel, and is a joyful highlight.

...

eureka is an album by american musician jim o'rourke. it was released on drag city in 1999. it is named after the 1984 nicolas roeg film of the same name. it is one of three albums recorded by o'rourke that are named after roeg films.

"women of the world" is an ivor cutler song and "something big" is by burt bacharach. "prelude to 110 or 120", "movie on the way down" and "through the night softly" are named after chris burden performance pieces.

weasel walter / fred lonberg-holm / jim o’rourketribute to masayuki takayanagi” compact disc

  • for jojo/freebasing styrofoam (31.17)
  • endless corridor of roasted babies (10.52)
  • slitted tit (03.56)
  • give me head 'til you're dead (15.15)
  • triumph of death (12.10)
assorted 1996-2000 blow-outs from assorted combinations of weasel walter (solo on two of the tracks), fred lonberg-holm, and jim o’rourke; assembled in deference/defiance of masayuki “jojo” takayanagi’s “new direction unit” (more on him/them shortly...)

i remember being really amped about this when it came out, but thinking it was almost too “metal” - how times have changed... in fact through the use of huge, cavernous reverb on everything this echoes recent “black metal” sides (especially walter’s 12+ minute “triumph of death” outro...)

a pretty essential link from the free-improv gauntlet of the mid-90s through the short-lived “brutal prog” gambit, clean on through to the current free-metal fascination...
grob press release...
fred lonberg-holm/ jim o'rourke/ weasel walter - tribute to masayuki takayanagi (08.2000)

weasel walter, drums, 12-string guitar
fred lonberg-holm, cello
jim o'rourke, electric guitar, apparition guitar

asides from keith rowe and fully independent of him, masayuki takayanagi was the first guitarist to use the table-top guitar, thereby instigating a purely incomprehensible noise. the japanese priest of noise, keiji haino, otomo yoshihide and merzbow all went to his "school."

for weasel walter, drummer and mastermind of the flying luttenbachers, this was cause enough to dedicate an entire cd to him.

no, one doesn't have to say much about this. this is highly dynamic no-compromise noise, packed in an aesthetic that ostensibly plays with clichés of violence and has o'rourke as "lycanthrovampyr." it rocks, uncontrolled and still on the dot. weasel walter's bottomless black calculation proves right.

we also need not mince words about o'rourke, the todd rundgren of our epoche, or about fred longberg-holm, the inspired cellist, who has played with everyone, from peter brötzmann to anthony coleman.

what else? the cd presents two sessions, one from 1996, one from 2000; there are a few overdubs (on the session from 2000) and o'rourke plays kevin drumms' guitar (on the session from 1996). the cover art, the liner notes and the mix are from weasel walter. and don't get the idea to bother the group with interview inquiries.

important press release...
long-delayed 3rd album by internationally acclaimed solo artist rivulets. featuring guests jessica bailiff (kranky), chris brokaw (codeine, come, the new year), christian frederickson (rachel's), fred lonberg-holm (boxhead ensemble), & bob weston (mission of burma, shellac).

the contributions of these remarkable musicians adds snowy layers of wintery texture to nathan amundson's beautiful recordings. like nick drake smothered not with layers of orchestration, but subtle textures to truly compliment the mood of the album.

rivulets is the project of minimalist singer-songwriter nathan amundson. born in colorado, amundson grew up in alaska before leaving home at age 16 and moving frequently throughout the united states. he started performing as rivulets in 1999, and currently resides in bloomington, in.

rivulets is a prolific songwriter, with releases out on several labels, including acuarela, bluesanct, silber, and chair kickers' union. this is rivulets' 3rd full length album, and 1st for important records.

rivulets' first 2 full-length albums, r i v u l e t s (2002) and debridement (2003), were both recorded by alan sparhawk of low, and released on low's own label chair kickers' union. these albums feature guest appearances from the likes of jessica bailiff , ld beghtol (magnetic fields), jon derosa (aarktica), marc gartman (no wait wait), brian john mitchell (remora), aaron molina (if thousands), and mimi parker (low).

extensive touring overseas has garnered rivulets intensely loyal fanbases across europe. we're hoping this, rivulets 1st album on important records, will help the us to take notice as well. a few of the artists rivulets has shared bills with in the past include: haley bonar, chris brokaw, cerberus shoal, cocorosie, mark eitzel, daniel johnston, low, mirah, my morning jacket, the new year, scout niblett, piano magic, radar bros., stars of the lid, songs: ohia, swearing at motorists, willard grant conspiracy, shannon wright, and xiu xiu. rivulets' discography also includes numerous compilation appearances and several eps: the aforementioned thank you reykjavik ep on bluesanct; the alcohol eps on silber; the rivulets / marc gartman split cd (featuring jarboe of swans) on tract; and the you've got your own ep on acuarela (the bestselling ep acuarela have released, out-selling eps by the album leaf, the clientele, and tara jane o'neil!).

this is not a folk album. this is an album about hearts breaking, tearing it down, and moving on.

kyle bruckmann: as an oboist and electronic musician has become a fixture in chicago's thriving experimental music underground. with a history of conservatory training gone awry, bruckmann combines the discipline of a classical foundation with the raucous sensibilities of dada and punk in adizzying variety of artistic endeavors. he has lived in chicago since 1996, teaching and free-lancing as a classical musician while playing regularly with some of the city's most creative improvisers and sound artists, including jeb bishop, jim baker, bhob rainey, fred lonberg-holm, bob marsh, robbie hunsinger, michael zerang, guillermo gregorio, and olivia block. ongoing affiliations include ekg, an electroacoustic duo with ernst karel, the rosenberg skronktet ("anyone interested in how creative music develops will want to keep an ear on their progress," kevin whitehead, chicago sun-times), and the experimental punk powerhouse lozenge. as a member of composer gene coleman's ensemble noamnesia, he has collaborated with polwechsel and performed works by george crumb, john cage, charles ives, cornelius cardew, malcolm goldstein, and salvatore sciarrino, among others.his debut cd of solo improvisations, "entymology," available through barely auditable records, has been hailed as "an enchanting experience that expands thepossibilities (and the comprehension) of the double reed family" (françois couture, all-music guide). ekg's "shift or latch" was recently released by crank satori; lozenge's recordings are available through toyo and farrago records.

jim baker (synthesizer) has performed & recorded (as either a pianist or synthesist) in various situations which have included various people, some of whom are also on this record, and others who are not. more specifically, mr. baker has previously performed with mr. bruckmann in situations organized by guillermo gregorio, fred lonberg-holm, scott rosenberg, ernst karel, robbie hunsinger, and michael zerang.

cellist fred lonberg-holm has performed and recorded extensively throughout north america and europe. while based out of nyc, he performed in and led various ensembles including his quartet peep, anthonybraxton's creative orchestra, god is my co-pilot, and anthony coleman's selfhaters. in the late '90s,lonberg-holm relocated to chicago where he has since become heavily involved in the free music scene. his projects there include the improvisational light box orchestra, pillow, terminal 4, and the peter brotzmann tentet.

gene coleman is a composer, bass clarinetist and artistic director of ensemble noamnesia. his compositions are explorations of possible relationships between noise and what is normally called "music", as well as spatial and temporal perception. with ensemble noamnesia and the yearly festival "sound field" he has had collaborations in chicago with many important composers, including helmut lachenmann, vinko globokar, george crumb, gerhard staebler, kunsu shim, roscoe mitchell, salvatore sciarrino, malcolm goldstein, luc ferrari, karlheinz essl, mathias spahlinger, burkhard stangl, john wolf brennan, guillermo gregorio and others. in the area of improvised music, he has played in concert with evan parker, derek bailey, william parker, roscoe mitchell, jim o'rourke, mats gustafson, taku sugimoto, carl stone, werner dafeldecker, otomo yoshihide, radu malfatti and many others. his recordings include several projects with jim o'rourke and gastr del sol, as well as tony conrad, john wolf brennan and christian wolfarth, gulliermo gregorio, anthony braxton, mats gustafsonand others.
