23five incorporated (usa) #23five 007 cd

francisco lópezlive in san francisco” compact disc

23five incorporated press release...

francisco lopez
live in san francisco
23five007, compact disc

with his ongoing pursuit of an “absolute concrète music,” francisco lópez has recontextualized the sounds of the world around us by pushing these sounds to their polar extremes. at times, he has imposed gaping silences and eradicated all but the slightest traces of musicality; at others, he has turned the placid wash of rainforest insect chatter into mechanically toxic drones and twisted a gentle breeze into a hurricane force blast of raw sound. the ambient din of the urban environment, human voices, the run-out grooves of vinyl, and even propulsive death metal blast beats count as some of the choicest source material with the imposing lópez catalogue, which includes well over 130 published works. over his illustrious career, lópez has traveled extensively both recording his source material and giving acousmatic performances for which he insists the audience members wear blindfolds.

over the years, the sound-arts organization 23five incorporated has sponsored numerous lópez performances in and around san francisco; and it is only fitting that 23five should publish this document of live recordings from san francisco, with one track culled from the infamous hexaphonic show at the lab in august 2000, and the other from an intimate performance at 3feetofftheground in july 2001. the spectral timbres and ominous somatic fluctuations of those performances inspired some audience members to gush: “it was just amazing how he layered the tracks together into massive lump of sonic force. totally different from what can be heard on many of his releases which tend to be minimal and silent. i was craving for more. lópez rocks!

as with the previous live in 's-hertogenbosch document, live in san francisco comes with a blindfold to enhance the phenomonological experience of lópez's dramatic compositions.

founded in 1993, 23five incorporated is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the development and increased awareness of sound works in the public arena, and to the support and education of artists working with and discussing the medium of sound. for the past 14 years, 23five incorporated has remained at the forefront in bringing the most adventurous elements of sound art to the san francisco bay area. 23five has served as an important benefactor to artists such as john duncan, christina kubisch, francisco lopez, achim wollscheid, matt heckert, zbigniew karkowski, atau tanaka, and many more.

first new (june 2006) lópez release in a while (perhaps the steam-train is slowing to a halt after all of those years?) notable for its inclusion of a few firsts: there’s a piece both performed/realized not by mr. lópez himself (the zeitkratzer ensemble; who handle the realization of ”untitled #111 [for jani christou]” with remarkable sensitivity... it’s almost indistinguishable from lópez’s electronic work...) and written in dedication to somone: the egyptian/greek electro-acoustic composer jani christou (also a favorite of syd barrett’s) ...

untitled (2005)
cd nocd030

on the new untitled (2005) cd the spanish composer francisco lópez presents four recently composed pieces which span a broad dynamic as well as stylistic range. together these constitute a fascinating and intense research exploration into the deep essence of sound. from sizzling jungle atmospheres to rumbling subterranean drones and microscopic details, this is a francisco lópez tour de force. in addition to three pieces based on environmental recordings, untitled (2005) features also an instrumental composition untitled #111 (for jani christou) performed by the noted german zeitkratzer ensemble. unsuprisingly, either way the sound is 100% francisco lópez. on this release mr. lópez might be unsually forthcoming about the sound sources he uses (as specified on the sleeve) but the dedication for the creation of absolute music remains the same.

bottrop-boy (germany) #b-boy 012 cd

francisco lópezlive in 's-hertogenbosch” compact disc

bottrop-boy press release...
francisco lópez
live in 's-hertogenbosch
cd / b-boy 012

world renowned composer francisco lópez has by now an extensive discography and is seen regularly performing his music live around the globe. yet only a very small portion of his extensive discography reflects his activities on stage. therefore we are proud to release this excellent recording of a francisco lópez concert from 1999, taped in 's-hertogenbosch, the netherlands. in a dark room, lópez sat behind the mixing board and mixed his various sound sources blindfolded, whilst his audience was also blindfolded. unlike his many 'silent' (or more accurately) studio cd's, lópez here builds the sound from extreme silence to extreme loudness. the cd comes with a black blindfold which is recommended for use during playback of the cd at home.

michael gendreau / francisco lópezdrowning b/w untitled #185” long playing record

  • michael gendreau - drowning

  • francisco lópez - untitled #185
... any lópez on vinyl is worth hearing ; no exceptions here ... gendreau’s side takes me back to his crawling with tarts-era surface-noise/crackle work ...
crippled intellect productions press release...
michael gendreau and francisco lopez: split lp

francisco lopez is perhaps best known for his dynamic studio and live performances that sway between crushing silence and dynamic, shifting volume swells. over the course of 25 years, lopez has developed and honed a refined audio lexicon. michael gendreau entered the experimental sound community in the early 1980s with his project crawling with tarts. as a solo artist, gendreau caught everyone’s attention with the 2002 release of his cd 55 pas de la ligne, composed of recordings based on old turntables and one-of-a-kind lps.

for this lp, gendreau, a trained acoustician, used extremely refined microphones -- designed for acoustic and vibrational research -- to record sounds such as turntable motor hum, belts, and run out grooves on records more than 70 years old. his side is an incredible journey through a forest of alternately prickly and soothing sounds. lopez used similar source material for his side, creating a refined oceanic wall of sound constructed from crackle, hum, and scratches.

this lp is in a numbered edition of 500 copies and signed by both artists.

sedimental (usa) #sed 024 cd

francisco lópezuntitled music for geography” compact disc

  • untitled music for geography
sedimental press release...
composed and recorded at messor studios (madrid) and the dark room, yale repertory theatre (new haven), during the spring of 1997. sound engineer: rob gorton.

this work was commisioned by the ralph lemon company for geography, a dance theatre work directed by ralph lemon, commissioned and premiered by the yale repertory theatre, new haven, ct. geography was also commissioned in part by 651, an arts center, brooklyn, ny and the national dance project of the new england foundation of the arts. additional fnuding was provided by the multiarts production fund of the rockefeller foundation and by 651’s africa exchange program, which is generously supported by a grant from the ford foundation.

specially re-mixed material francisco created for the dance work, geography, by the the ralph lemon dance co. which premiered at yale in new haven. at the time francisco already had established himself as an important new composer working with huge pools of silence that then build in time stretching waves of sonic purity. this work is certainly in the vein but there’s also subtle percussive elements woven in, drawn from an african percussion ensemble that performed live during the performance. this is francisco’s seventh cd release.

less-lethal, vol. 1
alku 63. various artists. 5" compact disc. 11 tracks. 16-page booklet. total program length 51:06

a compilation cd about sound-based nonlethal weaponry featuring tracks by carlos giffoni, dave phillips, francisco lópez, gæoudjiparl van den dobbelsteen, justice yeldham, lasse marhaug, mark fell, powerbooks for peace, torturing nurse, weasel walter and zbigniew karkowski.

keywords: less-lethal, nonlethal, torture, warfare, noise, crowd control, psychoacoustics.

less-lethal, vol. 1 is a sarcastic approach to the use of commercially available music in the military context (see waco, noriega, etc.) it includes a 16-page booklet with an essay by german researcher paul paulun about nonlethal force and its historical relationship with sound and music.

the foundations for this project were laid around 1999, with a long period of research into the equally blurry and fascinating fields of nonlethal weapons (also known as less-lethal weapons) and the behavioral sciences. over the course of this time, we found that one of the most interesting aspects of this phenomenon – full of mythology and speculation – was the use of commercially available music in the context of armed conflict, torture and crowd control. particularly the sheer lack of imagination on the part of military experts who resort to the use of pop music as a weapon, by playing it back for painfully long periods of time at very high volumes.

the direct relationship between sound and behavior has been documented outside the military over the centuries, from the musical treatment of mental patients in the ottoman empire to muzak's stimulus progression theory. with this in mind, it was the psyop’s complete lack of research which provided an excellent starting point for a challenging musical exercise. eleven artists were invited to contribute a sound piece that could be used as a weapon in an armed conflict.

the resulting tracks approach the subject matter in radically different ways. amplitude, duration and repetition may indeed constitute key elements of discomfort, but these tracks all go well beyond that. exploring dynamics and frequency range, structure, latent content, or various aspects from the realm of psychoacoustics, these pieces pose a stimulating (and less lethal) alternative to the average weaponized aor.

yops!
this is anna and roc from barcelona.
we reach you cause we'd like to invite you to take part in one of our nextalku projects.

alku's new compilation is called "x + y = xy".
it is a different approach to collaborations/splits, based on the idea of "blind dates".
we arrange you a "blind date" with another artist. kind of a "blind split".
you must send us a piece of exactly 2 minutes, and so has the other invited person (your couple).
we get your piece and his piece (exactly same lenght). then we overlap both.
x (your piece) + y (the other guy piece) = xy (resulting track on the cd)
please send your track in a cd.

the tracks we have got so far are just amazing and the ones we have tried to overlap work fucking brilliantly. the blind date thingee works top.

hope you enjoy the project as much as we do.
please reply as fast as possible
thanx a lot

montreal sound matter / montréal matières sonore

works by francisco lópez / louis dufort / steve heimbecker / hélène prévost / mathieu lévesque / a_dontigny / chantal dumas / tomas phillips

montreal sound matter / montréal matières sonore brings together eight canadian and international sound artists. the project began with a workshop on environmental sound collecting by francisco lópez and led to the development of a collective sound project including an album, a sound installation, and a concert. this is the recording.

the artists create an immersive sound installation made up of fragments of montreal, which propose a reflection and a questioning on the city. far from being a postcard, these sound portraits suggest an abstract view of montreal made up of fragments modeled or transformed to the liking of the artists. through these places turned non-places and thus more or less unrecognizable, the pieces present an interesting variety of aesthetics, constructions and creative processes. - esther bourdages

...

yet it is not about the city as a conglomerate of soundmarks or stereotyped symbolic elements--it does not aim at making a sound portrait or a representational creation. my proposal to all the participating artists involved in the project was to foresee the city --both outdoors and indoors, both the public and the private spaces-- as a constantly-changing generator of sound matter. the original source environmental recordings were carried out by the participating artists in montreal during april 2006, and we all shared the common pool of sound matter thus generated to create the individual pieces. i believe this is an interesting way of setting up a challenging situation in which we are dealing with a limited and intentionally restricted universe of sonic extractions of reality, and also -and more importantly-a straightforward way of proceeding to reveal the creative individual substance of each one of us.” - francisco lópez

october 2009 release ; neat fold-out double-disc edition covering a series of pieces curated by martijn hohmann for a “listening room at art gallery lokaal01” in breda, nl ...

the set ships flat (actually smaller than your average dorado gatefold) but opens up like so ::

some great work here, including all-exclusive pieces from machinefabriek (crackly, cheap-reverb plugin rework of aaron martin’s cello), janek schaefer (neat, plunderphonic flamenco piece), runzelstirn & gurgelstøck (classic, aktion-heavy rudolf), merzbow (washing-machine rhythms into a synth blow-out) ...

... then (ad)vance(d) (formant-filter drones & assorted static), justin bennett’s students (ground-hum rich field recording overlay), steve roden (automatic-feeling mystery clank & reed drones - get lost in the long sound-sample), francisco lópez (rainforest hiss), and staplerfahrer (grainy, noisy grisple) ...

most pieces hover around the 10-minute mark, as such there’s enough room for them to say what they need to without feeling hurried ... as site-specific compilations go this one’s a keeper ; highly recommended !!!
