burned bridges and lost loves
2cd / b-boy 023

burned bridges and lost loves is the second part of a project in which friends, colleagues and lovers were asked to remix the works of chicago improvisation-trio tv pow. like its predecessor powerful friends and devoted lovers, a double-album that contains 29 remixes, the second and final installment also offers remixes of tracks that are mostly taken from tv pow’s album friendship patrol. adding another 31 remixes, the total amount of remixes is now equal to the amount of tracks that feature on friendship patrol. on the original score tv pow managed to create a evolving soundscape of unidentifiable field recordings, minimal electronics and serene ambient drones. it’s no surprise that friendship patrol happened to be a grateful source for further exploration.

burned bridges and lost loves includes contributions from tarentel, tim hecker, sachiko m, illusion of safety, wolf eyes, alva noto, stephan mathieu, david grubbs and francisco lopez, amongst many others. these contributors could be classified as a representative sample of currently influential artists in experimental and electronic music.

burned bridges and lost loves comes with artwork by meeuw, yet another remix of the original artwork of friendship patrol.

francisco lópezlive in 's-hertogenbosch” compact disc

  • live in 's-hertogenbosch
bottrop-boy press release...
francisco lópez
live in 's-hertogenbosch
cd / b-boy 012

world renowned composer francisco lópez has by now an extensive discography and is seen regularly performing his music live around the globe. yet only a very small portion of his extensive discography reflects his activities on stage. therefore we are proud to release this excellent recording of a francisco lópez concert from 1999, taped in 's-hertogenbosch, the netherlands. in a dark room, lópez sat behind the mixing board and mixed his various sound sources blindfolded, whilst his audience was also blindfolded. unlike his many 'silent' (or more accurately) studio cd's, lópez here builds the sound from extreme silence to extreme loudness. the cd comes with a black blindfold which is recommended for use during playback of the cd at home.

michael gendreau / francisco lópezdrowning b/w untitled #185” long playing record

  • michael gendreau - drowning

  • francisco lópez - untitled #185
... any lópez on vinyl is worth hearing ; no exceptions here ... gendreau’s side takes me back to his crawling with tarts-era surface-noise/crackle work ...
crippled intellect productions press release...
michael gendreau and francisco lopez: split lp

francisco lopez is perhaps best known for his dynamic studio and live performances that sway between crushing silence and dynamic, shifting volume swells. over the course of 25 years, lopez has developed and honed a refined audio lexicon. michael gendreau entered the experimental sound community in the early 1980s with his project crawling with tarts. as a solo artist, gendreau caught everyone’s attention with the 2002 release of his cd 55 pas de la ligne, composed of recordings based on old turntables and one-of-a-kind lps.

for this lp, gendreau, a trained acoustician, used extremely refined microphones -- designed for acoustic and vibrational research -- to record sounds such as turntable motor hum, belts, and run out grooves on records more than 70 years old. his side is an incredible journey through a forest of alternately prickly and soothing sounds. lopez used similar source material for his side, creating a refined oceanic wall of sound constructed from crackle, hum, and scratches.

this lp is in a numbered edition of 500 copies and signed by both artists.

jorge simonet, francisco lopez: 'untitled #91' dvd

reissue of the lopez sound piece from 1999 - a masterfully crafted journey to the threshold of audiability. this new dvd version contains a new film by jorge simonet which is based on the original sound work. equally stunning in its extremely subtle presentation, the film is an abstract immersive visual and sonic experience challenging the limits of perception. a landmark in minimal art and sound, matched with a white digipak, white disc surface, and sparse light gray text. if not the most minimal film in history, this is certainly the most minimal music video ever!

francisco lopez is known the world over for his work which spans field recordings, ambient textures and extreme minimalism and has releases on numerous us, european, japanese, and australian labels. jorge simonet has collaborated previously with francisco lopez on "untitled (1998)," which featured time-lapse sky photography. other films of his include sabor de la comida de lata, el (1997) trailer (1997), chasco (1994), sobre la tierra (1994). both artists are based in madrid.

longbox recordings (usa) #lbt 030 cd

francisco lópezwasps” three inch compact disc

  • wasps
early (1993) micro-epic from lopez, here in slow-arc mode. over 19 minutes pink/white noise filtered out entirely above about 430hz gets a little louder, stays there, then subsides. an interesting early peek into the mind of lopez, identity not yet fully formed? you be the judge...
longbox recordings press release...
composed and recorded at messor studios (madrid) in 1993.
remastered at mobile messor in 2002.

there is no better way to celebrate longbox's 30th release than by issuing a recording by this absolute sound practitioner. originally recorded in 1993, this is one of francisco's most sensual pieces. a natural high-end mist is contrasted by a dense, majestic and unrelenting bass rumble that sounds like swarms of it's namesake engulfing you in a warm aural glow.

“insects have always been an important element in my life. i worked on entomology for a number of years and when i recorded 'wasps', some ten years ago, i was still under the influence of a diffuse sense of inspiration from insects. this piece was originally 2-hours long and got a lot of the sonic droning textures i was playing with at the time. to me, it has an immersive quality that i pursue in all my work with sound environments. It doesn't give me the feeling of ambient-like stuff or repetition, but rather a flowing, endless presence of deep complex sound.” - francisco lópez

moso press release...
francisco lopez
untitled (2004)

"as soon as the call is in the air, it no longer belongs to the frog that produced it."

we are pleased to announce our second release, february 2006, by seasoned veteran francisco lopezuntitled 2004 continues with his unique brand of elegantly produced acousmatic music.  blocks and masses of ambiguous sound envelop the listener with sheets and walls of dense abstractions whose origins are seemingly unknown.  thick bio and hissing sounds in this complete package of sound sensation.

...

over the last twenty years francisco lópez has been developing a powerful and consistent world of sound creations, 'trying to reach an ideal of absolute concrète music'. to date, his catalog comprises more than 170 sound works, which have been released by over 140 record labels throughout the world. he has toured extensively throughout western and eastern europe, north, central and south america, japan, taiwan, south africa, australia, and new zealand doing live acousmatic performances and sound installations, and he has received commissions from a number of renown institutions and organizations, such as the dutch and spanish national radios, the goethe institut, v2 organization (rotterdam), yale university theater (new haven), the ralph lemon company (new york), the zeitkratzer ensemble (berlin), creative time (new york), quartier ephemere (montreal), sound traffic control (san francisco), argos festival (brussels) and radio new zealand (auckland).

through what he once called as 'the exploration of the universe of broad-band noise from the real world', his music arises from the processing of environmental recordings. in deep contrast to the classical soundscape movement (and even despite his paradoxical past involment with related organizations as the environmental tape exchange, the world forum for acoustic ecology and the nature sounds society), his vast activity doing field recordings all over the world (nearly 40 countries in five continents) never pursued a documentary or representational goal, but a dramatically opposite object sonore perspective. and in this sense, the evolution of his aesthetics and conceptual background is a profound process of refinement towards an extreme musical purism, with a voluntary and forceful refusal of any visual, procedural, relational, semantic, functional or virtuosistic elements. what is left is an astonishingly powerful musical essence capable of reaching both the deepest and most dreadful abysms of crude strengthness and the most subtle and diffuse aural edges; a complex territory of anti fast-listening where perceptual awareness and the power of naked music are strikingly rediscovered; a world where things are uneasy, unclear, unsolved and where one is forced to inmerse and search. he calls it belle confusion.

sedimental (usa) #sed 024 cd

francisco lópezuntitled music for geography” compact disc

  • untitled music for geography
sedimental press release...
composed and recorded at messor studios (madrid) and the dark room, yale repertory theatre (new haven), during the spring of 1997. sound engineer: rob gorton.

this work was commisioned by the ralph lemon company for geography, a dance theatre work directed by ralph lemon, commissioned and premiered by the yale repertory theatre, new haven, ct. geography was also commissioned in part by 651, an arts center, brooklyn, ny and the national dance project of the new england foundation of the arts. additional fnuding was provided by the multiarts production fund of the rockefeller foundation and by 651’s africa exchange program, which is generously supported by a grant from the ford foundation.

specially re-mixed material francisco created for the dance work, geography, by the the ralph lemon dance co. which premiered at yale in new haven. at the time francisco already had established himself as an important new composer working with huge pools of silence that then build in time stretching waves of sonic purity. this work is certainly in the vein but there’s also subtle percussive elements woven in, drawn from an african percussion ensemble that performed live during the performance. this is francisco’s seventh cd release.

audio warfare and crowd control studies. edited by alku.

less-lethal, vol. 1
alku 63. various artists. 5" compact disc. 11 tracks. 16-page booklet. total program length 51:06

a compilation cd about sound-based nonlethal weaponry featuring tracks by carlos giffoni, dave phillips, francisco lópez, gæoudjiparl van den dobbelsteen, justice yeldham, lasse marhaug, mark fell, powerbooks for peace, torturing nurse, weasel walter and zbigniew karkowski.

keywords: less-lethal, nonlethal, torture, warfare, noise, crowd control, psychoacoustics.

less-lethal, vol. 1 is a sarcastic approach to the use of commercially available music in the military context (see waco, noriega, etc.) it includes a 16-page booklet with an essay by german researcher paul paulun about nonlethal force and its historical relationship with sound and music.

the foundations for this project were laid around 1999, with a long period of research into the equally blurry and fascinating fields of nonlethal weapons (also known as less-lethal weapons) and the behavioral sciences. over the course of this time, we found that one of the most interesting aspects of this phenomenon – full of mythology and speculation – was the use of commercially available music in the context of armed conflict, torture and crowd control. particularly the sheer lack of imagination on the part of military experts who resort to the use of pop music as a weapon, by playing it back for painfully long periods of time at very high volumes.

the direct relationship between sound and behavior has been documented outside the military over the centuries, from the musical treatment of mental patients in the ottoman empire to muzak's stimulus progression theory. with this in mind, it was the psyop’s complete lack of research which provided an excellent starting point for a challenging musical exercise. eleven artists were invited to contribute a sound piece that could be used as a weapon in an armed conflict.

the resulting tracks approach the subject matter in radically different ways. amplitude, duration and repetition may indeed constitute key elements of discomfort, but these tracks all go well beyond that. exploring dynamics and frequency range, structure, latent content, or various aspects from the realm of psychoacoustics, these pieces pose a stimulating (and less lethal) alternative to the average weaponized aor.

yops!
this is anna and roc from barcelona.
we reach you cause we'd like to invite you to take part in one of our nextalku projects.

alku's new compilation is called "x + y = xy".
it is a different approach to collaborations/splits, based on the idea of "blind dates".
we arrange you a "blind date" with another artist. kind of a "blind split".
you must send us a piece of exactly 2 minutes, and so has the other invited person (your couple).
we get your piece and his piece (exactly same lenght). then we overlap both.
x (your piece) + y (the other guy piece) = xy (resulting track on the cd)
please send your track in a cd.

the tracks we have got so far are just amazing and the ones we have tried to overlap work fucking brilliantly. the blind date thingee works top.

hope you enjoy the project as much as we do.
please reply as fast as possible
thanx a lot

montreal sound matter / montréal matières sonore

works by francisco lópez / louis dufort / steve heimbecker / hélène prévost / mathieu lévesque / a_dontigny / chantal dumas / tomas phillips

montreal sound matter / montréal matières sonore brings together eight canadian and international sound artists. the project began with a workshop on environmental sound collecting by francisco lópez and led to the development of a collective sound project including an album, a sound installation, and a concert. this is the recording.

the artists create an immersive sound installation made up of fragments of montreal, which propose a reflection and a questioning on the city. far from being a postcard, these sound portraits suggest an abstract view of montreal made up of fragments modeled or transformed to the liking of the artists. through these places turned non-places and thus more or less unrecognizable, the pieces present an interesting variety of aesthetics, constructions and creative processes. - esther bourdages

...

yet it is not about the city as a conglomerate of soundmarks or stereotyped symbolic elements--it does not aim at making a sound portrait or a representational creation. my proposal to all the participating artists involved in the project was to foresee the city --both outdoors and indoors, both the public and the private spaces-- as a constantly-changing generator of sound matter. the original source environmental recordings were carried out by the participating artists in montreal during april 2006, and we all shared the common pool of sound matter thus generated to create the individual pieces. i believe this is an interesting way of setting up a challenging situation in which we are dealing with a limited and intentionally restricted universe of sonic extractions of reality, and also -and more importantly-a straightforward way of proceeding to reveal the creative individual substance of each one of us.” - francisco lópez

156 pp., 7 x 9”, perfect-bound, full-color cover
(with exclusive cd)

we are very excited to present fo a rm no. 5, a special sound-art issue with an exclusive full-length cd complimenting the writings. (autonomy) is an examination of sound and freedom, a look at how artists and audiences take responsibility for their place in the world. topic editor and composer michael j. schumacher asks - "how can we 'save' ourselves from the undermining forces of commercialization and homogenization by 'using' the system in place, but returning as little as possible to it?" from a variety of perspectives along the fringes, we probe this question and raise many others.

including a special section on the great filipino composer jose maceda, with rare writings and scores - an in-depth interview with serbian radio artist arsenije jovanovic - writings by sound artists giancarlo toniutti, francisco lopez, achim wollscheid and john duncan - notes on improvisation by michael bullock - a probe into musical autonomy in the armed forces - writings on a sound installation by physicist luis lopez with composer barbara held - a profile of diapason sound gallery (nyc) - a poetic essay by musique concrete composer lionel marchetti - the early scores of robert ashley examined by avant-garde cellist alex waterman - experimental poetry by paolo javier, steven zultanski and travis nichols - art by jan anderzen (of kemialliset ystävät) and sreshta premnath - and much more!

plus, in collaboration with sedimental records, an amazing 80-minute cd with music by jonas baes, barbara held, arsenije jovanovic, jose maceda and michael j. schumacher!

third volume in this series... as always a great way to learn about the splendour of the early electronic music construction modus while being tipped off to the present-day candle-holders; all while not interrupting too many of the butterflies nestling in your wallet. i’m both psyched and mortified to have a piece on here alongside my idols; parmegiani, mimaroglu, le caine, eimert + beyer, faust, etc... just about everything is unreleased or an alternate version/mix/out-take to the previously available. quality all around...
