hotter than hell. might melt your face off! ‘swelter’ is a mail collaboration with tapes passed back and forth between cambridge, massachusetts and hamilton, ontario fall 2009. howard stelzer is head of the awe inspiring intransitive recordings label and king of cassette composition. david payne is best known as the pilot of the strange ship fossils. together they create a new dimension of cassette culture. tapes at every speed and strange sewer swirls.

mastered by kris lapke at hospital full color cover by graham lambkin (hand-pasted on white jackets) b&w insert by steve smith 200 numbered copies.

august 2009 release ; excellent set of non-denominational (is it jazz ? free improv ? psych ? noise ? labels don’t seem to apply here) lo-fi thrill-seeking from this canadian troupe (with about a million releases for their own middle james co., also 905 tapes, hermitage tapes, fag tapes, bug incision, excitebike, catholic tapes, digitalis, housecraft, cut hands - you name it, they’ve done a tape !!!) ...

one piece, buried in buckets of lafms-lineage (smegma, i take it, are a big touchstone) ooze ; awesome.

hailing from hamilton, ontario, the free improv freak unit fossils have unleashed about a billion limited-run releases documenting their weird journey since 2005. built on mystery, busted electronics, internal machine feedback, treated tapes & amplified junk, fossils paint abstract new visions on steel cave walls. the 2009 fossils players include david payne, steve smith (thousand year frog), daniel farr (the living stump) & featuring the saxophone stylings of rob michalchuk (poor little music label). young guns was recorded sometime 2008 at mjc hq.

ketchup cavern's first jazz record. numbered edition of 119, color paste-on/screenprinted artwork, handmade sleeve. no computers used in production or design. mastered from cassette for maximum audio fidelity.

september 2011 release ; ... a split release, offering a pair of pairs of lichen-coated, rusted-out electronics from fossils (a crossing of the high level bridge as recorded through the hole below the floormat of a 1986 datsun 300zx - oscillator goes up - car falls of bridge - slowly - goes underwater - drowns - extremely slowly - ... - ring-modulated tape loops as proof whole incident was in fact a fever-dream) & “tom” darksmith (hell freezes over - water set to boil - generators are started - thawing begins - apparitions are released - assorted biblical shamanry - mental wall of hysteresis converted from ethereal to actual by sublimation - break for lunch - cleanup - 6rpm dance party / digestion aid ... listen to the sound-sample for the last 4 of those things) ...

comes in a striking negative-space addled sleeve ; best work i’ve heard from either party yet ...

million year spree is the first in an occasional series of shared lps where two like-minded souls meet under one umbrella. hamilton, ontario's fossils have long been the reigning kings of no-fi acoustic sewage, producing an endless stream of outstandingly dire handcut confusion. calfornia's darksmith came to public attention last year via their peerless total vacuum lp (hanson). wilting electronics, floppy turntableism and sun-baked cassette protocol are combined and destroyed in a claustrophobic void. with additional mixing by graham lambkin and mastering by jason lescalleet million year spree is the last word on being and nothingness.

hittin hard from the hammer comes bottom feeder who are jeremiah buchan (fossils), and "forever" scott johnson (fossils). conjouring up a bowl full of bad vibes these two brothers in arms bust on horns, violin, cymbals, and a ceptic pit full of fx. as always keepin it completely real. commit total sewer-cide!

please note :: each copy of these wintage “split” tapes comes with two 8.5” x 14” posters (one for each artist, detailed below) ; if you want me to ship your posters flat, i will gladly do so as i have just enough 9” x 14” mailers on hand, but keep in mind that these will not fit in the mailers i use to ship lp records (i.e. 12.5” x 12.5”) ... if you are interested in these lovely tape/poster sets & want them to arrive intact, i would greatly appreciate discrete orders for these & these alone ...
