this cd collects four previously available releases (e11, e13–e15). resistance cycle/invisible orchestra: the first track was recorded with a 1960s valve sine wave tone generator, the second one with records and turntables. trail of droplets: four tracks of filmic and melancholic electronic music by ben norland. engtevrees: peter smeekens’ work straddles analogue and digital technologies without being overly suggestive of either. engtevrees illustrates this well over its 20-minute duration; it’s composed entirely of a recording made at an underground car park in antwerp which was then manipulated with a computer, tape decks and effects. an absent–minded track: a powerful union of error and coincidence, captured onto tape via an erratic analogue keyboard emitting its last battery pulse.

filter feeder 1 resistance cycle recorded in real time using a 1960s valve sine wave tone generator, analogue filters and digital delays. the act or an instance of resisting. opposition to somebody or something. the opposition to a flow of electric current through a circuit component, medium or substance. the capacity to withstand something, especially the body's natural capacity to withstand disease. the process by which the ego keeps repressed thoughts and feelings from the conscious mind. the magnitude of the real part of the acoustic or mechanical impedance. an 'illegal' organisation fighting for national liberty in a country under enemy occupation. 2 invisible orchestra all sounds made with records and turntables, recorded in real-time onto a digital four-track. there seems to me to be within our culture a tendency to revere technology, to assume all that is new is inherently better especially if it is something that can be sold at a significant profit as opposed to, for instance, something that will help preserve the environment. like all technologies, audio technology is constantly evolving, however, no new innovation or format supersedes or makes redundant any of those already in existence; it merely adds to the array of tools available for the creation and appreciation of audio works. hence, i choose not to 'wince at the scratch' but, like the anonymous 'they' of 1898, to 'marvel at the reproduction of an invisible orchestra'. be led by your ears and not by the marketing strategies and advertising campaigns of corporations. all material written, played, recorded and mixed by julian doyle. © julian doyle 2004. originally released as entr'acte 11,2005.
