a-musik (germany) #a 30 ep

felix kubin / coolhaventhere is a garden b/w waschzwangmama” seven inch single record

  • there is a garden (3:42)
  • waschzwangmama (2:55)
2006 single from mr. knoth... working a plaintive mojo-set infused with familial gradations... a-side is a friendly old-timey tune; in anyone else’s hands nothing special but of course felix has infused it with some rather odd lyrics & iconography. b-side piece will appeal to fans of his more recent output (i.e. the single on ultra eczema...)
a-musik press release...
limited edition (1st edition of 500 copies) pre-taster for the forthcoming cd on brombron.

sentimental moody a-side has become already a classic in his live shows. so, to public demand we present this now as a 'hit'-single b/w the paranoiac fast rocker "waschzwangmama".

felix kubinmatki wandalki” compact disc

  • wirbelwind am manual (0’40)
  • menthol radio swing (2’00)
  • too technical (2’27)
  • this is no dream (1’45)
  • lumiére belge (6’06)
  • agenten des schlafes (3’24)
  • fernwärme wien (2’44)
  • hissi hissi (7’32)
  • matki wandalki (1’51)
  • wir alle sind qualle (1’17)
  • psyko billy (3’56)
  • hit me provider (2’59)
  • hello (4’04)
felixs’ most recent full-length album... in my mind his best! contains the lionel ritchie cover “hello” (which kind of has to be heard to be believed...), his hit “hit me provider”, a few totally killer gameboy freakouts (listen to the sound-sample), the pre-requisite organ rhythm-box jams (always amazing), and so on...

it’s hard to justify my fascination with felix; there’s much kitsch at work (not an element i normally treasure) but at the same time he’s so living in his own private universe (yuri gagarin is the president and the moon is made of cheese...) that you have to love him on some level... if not several.

if you’ve ever wondered what music i put on at parties, it’s pretty much this every time... no one else is making such rampantly eclectic electronic music (these days at least) and getting away with it... all hail felix.
a-musik press release...
old school? new school? in reality, both are just a question of orchestral and sound preference. the freespirit, in this case, decides for no school: for only from the fragments of no (ie. no wave in reference to no new york) new forms can originate. and, at best, no would also imply idiosyncratic wanking and autodidactic self-empowerment.

as 11-year-old pre-teen, this gyro gearloose of pataphysical sound felix kubin not only sought for self-satisfaction with his legendary child-band „die egozentrischen 2“ but also instigated the first folk synthesizer against its own instruction manual (of course in accordance with the „zeitgeist“ at that time). the result was an elevated monstrosity from a merciless rage-experiment with frightening precociousness. all at the peak of the neue deutsche welle...

thank god that today, more than two decades later, there is no stopping this former „wunderkind“! admittedly, the mischievous demolition of pop structures, which was once attributed to a juvenile berserkerdom, has since then evolved into a more conscious dada-hooliganism. or - to put it simple with the metaphor of the album title - it turned into the „mothers of destruction“ (in polish: matki wandalki = vandalizing mothers).

the fact that the anaemic ghost of deconstruction doesn’t spoil the 13 tracks on this cd must have to do with felix’ abstruse humor. like his love of sounds, the hum of kubin’s cosmos is powerfully distinct. it reminds (not only) me of tschechoslovakian animation films and – even further back – of the electro-acoustic sound experiments of the fifties avant-garde long before their development into pop.

matki wandalki unites several pairs of aesthetic contradictions. abstract darmstadt goes pop. the result is „witty“ musique concrete and something that i can only interpret as „program-music“ without a narrative „program“.

that by such cheerful science he would also come out with a real hit for the possibleweb-nerds-casting-show (hit me provider) is no surprise for me. on the conrtrary, it’s more than ever pleasing. with it felix should finally be making the well deserved dough...as for me, i just can’t leave him out of pop...no school? better this: own school! class kubin!

  • die dame schreit so schön (‘83) - 0’07”
lp version of the cd on skipp with one caveat - this has an entirely different program of music than offered on the cd companion. amazing home-recorded madness/scrapings done right at the tail of the zick-zack era (some sort of reference point i suppose but not really all that accurate ; felix is on his own time/space plane) ...
a-musik press release...
"recordings from 1981-1985. in the beginning of the 80ies a vivid scene of children bands came to existence in hamburgs suburb bergedorf. the groups had names like "rekronstruirtes relativpronomen”, “architektonisch sehenswertes bauwerk”, “universalanschluss” and “die egozentrischen 2”. behind the two latter ones the nowadays nearly famous sci-fi pop impresario felix kubin, his brother max and a friend called stefan mohr were agitating.

zick-zack boss alfred hilsberg supported them and organized gigs in clubs and avantgarde furniture galleries like markthalle and moebel perdú. some highlights of their work are now released by a-musik and skipp with different track selections on lp and cd."

each track deserves a couple of brief explanations. first of all: as no good sequencers or computers were applied. most sounds and melodies were played by hand. computers made to produce high-wuality music, such as the “fairlight” aroun 1983, were unaffordable. namely a large percentage of people, considered at the time as un-cool, sat in front of cheap monitors of whatever kind on a daily basis for weeks, to mess around with rudimentary programming language by the name of basic on index cards. but that had nothing to do with music. we loved the synthetic for its own purpose, as an aesthetic phenomene in time. as a replica of a world overwhelmed by technology. we made reference to plastic, industry, elevators, television, electronics, and out-of-function music.

felix kubin & ensemble intégrales
echohaus
2lp

vinyl plays at 45rpm.

this latest project by the hamburg-based musician, composer, and futurist, felix kubin i>(his second release on dekorder) is a collaboration with the contemporary music chamber group, ensemble intégrales, and the reknowned german underground pop producer and sound engineer, tobias levin.

echohaus was recorded in and around levin's electric avenue studio in the basement of westwerk, a former squat and cultural centre for non-commercial art and music in hamburg.  a special recording technique was developed for the project whereby the musicians played simultaneously in separate rooms, connected to one and other only by headphones. this was done in order to achieve a lively,“cinematic" sound that made use of the particular dynamics of the rooms and amplified mechanical details. the rooms, each of which had a different acoustic character, were used as natural echo chambers. kubin and the composer burkhard friedrich, former member of ensemble intégrales, provided the musicians with simple graphic scores or basic descriptions of the compositions; all subsequent material was developed on the fly. kubin was in the mixing room giving instructions and suggestions, while the musicians played and improvised, adding their own ideas to the project.

no artificial reverb or effects were added to the recordings. the different types of rooms and microphones, noises inside and outside of the studio, as well as the unusual interrelationship between the physically isolated players became part of the process. all the tracks were recorded in one take without any additional layers or track-by-track recordings. after a five-day recording session kubin and levin created various mixes which kubin then edited over a period of several months.

the final results mark yet another radical departure from kubin's trademark sci-fi pop sound, blending the aesthetics of academic contemporary music, film soundtracks and improvised music with a strong focus on room-specific natural acoustics.

felix kubin has released highly acclaimed albums on a-musik, dekorder and his own gagarin label. he has recently been featured on the front cover of the wire magazine, released his first short movie collection, directed several radio plays and is currently finishing the production on his forthcoming sci-fi pop album.

burkhard friedrich (born 1962 in berlin) is a composer of several musictheatres, film music and chamber music, performed by ensemble intégrales (d), phoenix ensemble (ch), the austrian ensemble (a) and others, saxophon player and improvising musician. he is regularly collaborating with video-artists and theatrical directors.

ensemble intégrales was founded by burkhard friedrich and barbara lüneburg. their repertoire includes classics by karlheinz stockhausen, john cage, iannis xenakis, alfred schnittke, giacinto scelsi, steve reich, alvin lucier, györgy ligeti, frederic rzewski, james tenney, morton feldman, cornelius cardew, mauricio kagel and new music from china, austria and the uk.

tobias levin is a german producer and engineer. the bands and musicians he has worked with range from pop to avantgarde, including kammerflimmer kollektief, charles curtis, to rococo rot, tied & tickled trio, christian naujoks, christoph kurzmann & john butcher, augsburger tafelconfect & lol coxhill or kreidler. he is also a founding member of legendary avant pop group cpt. kirk &.

[022] felix kubin und das mineralorchester "music for theatre and radio play" lp

we are extremely excited to announce the 1st collaboration between the dekorder label and our old friend, local conspirator and private hair gardener felix kubin.

kubin has achieved world wide reputation by releasing post-dadaist, futuristic ndw-influenced organ&korg smash hits on his own gagarin label, on a-musik, ski-pp, meeuw, diskono et al. he has collaborated with people like us, coolhaven, mark boombastik, asmus tietchens, ensemble intégrales, david fenech, ergo phizmiz, boris d. hegenbart, wojtek kucharczyk and many others. his first recordings date back to his teenage years in the early 1980's, followed by his electroacoustic noise duo klangkrieg and the pseudo-communist liedertafel margot honecker.

right from the start felix kubin has written and recorded music for films (hence the title of his first album) by the likes of mariola brillowska and anke feuchtenberger and continues the german tradition of "hörspiel" (radio play) with works such as "territerrortorium", "nachtspeicher", "orpheuspsykotron" and "syndikat für gegenlärm" (with guest appearances by matmos, dat politics and wolfgang müller of die tödliche doris).

some of kubin's most gorgeous and adventurous works are his contributions to "the raft" (a radio play by the mysterious xentos bentos of the homosexuals, directed by lukas simonis of coolhaven, trespassers w, dull schicksal) and his soundtracks for theatre plays by branko simic ("zufall", based on a short story by vladimir nabokov) and the notorious schorsch kamerun. the latter (known in germany as a member of goldene zitronen) directed "hollywood elegien" based on a song cycle by bert brecht and hanns eisler. now the best parts of these works are for the first time available on lp and cd, simply (and aptly) titled "music for theatre and radio play".

while the musical spectrum on this release covers a variety of styles and moods it’s still almost immediately recognisable as a typically kubin-ist work featuring the main ingredients his records and body-and-mind-boggling live shows are famous for. twisted rhythms & playfully clever arrangements that could have been created by a mutated reincarnation of the legendary juan esquivel; hauntingly ethereal tracks sounding like a narcoleptic john carpenter playing angelo badalamenti arrangements; contorted big band music, pre-war schlager and vaudeville sent through a malfunctioning pre-digital time machine; ennio morricone cloned as a russian male choir; instrumental workers' songs hanns eisler might have imagined in a feverish nightmare  - it’s all there, and more!

 best of 2008 !!!
diskono (scotland) #diskono 17 lp

scott haggart1:17” long playing record

  • scott haggart (1:17)

original edit psychotopologically derived from a 0.7 millisecond recorded extract of a diskono performance (2000)

  • lary seven (1:17)
  • evol (1:17)
  • felix kubin (1:17)
  • white daughter (1:17)
  • charlie mcalister (1:17)
  • jan van den dobbelsteen (1:17)

all other edits created from original (2000-2007)
july 2008 release ; first release from the scottish diskono imprint in a decade (remember ; they did those great “i’m so bored with the u.s.a.” comps back @ the turn-of-the-century & released some of boards of canada & felix kubin’s first music) ...

here the label’s taking a decidedly different direction ... this one’s all diskono member scott haggart’s doing ; an art-record consisting of a one-minute conceptual piece on the a-side (cut mid-record for maximum effect), then a series of re-workings of said by felix, lary 7, evol, charlie mcalister, white daughter, and jan van den dobbelsteen on the flip ...

where the original is a statically-charged burst of raw electricity (i know pan sonic is a big touchstone for scott ; not a bad reference-point here), the reworkings take in just about every conceivable sound-alteration method ; from lary 7’s “magnetic” reworking to evol’s woozy sliding pitch-scale, to felix’s crackling chatter ...

really well-done record ; the mastering and pressing are superb (even if the cover / art is a little spartan) ; highly recommended !!!

artist / title: scott haggart (plus lary seven, evol, felix kubin, white daughter, charlie mcalister, jan van den dobbelsteen) / 1 :17

label (catalog #) / qty / format (rpm): diskono (017) / 1000/12" vinyl (45rpm)

release date: 07/27/08 (usa/ can), and 27/07/08 (uk / europe / rest of world)

a-side

scott haggart's original edit is "psychotopologically derived from a 0.7 millisecond recorded extract of a diskono performance (2000)." obsessively and secretly expanded is a 0.7 millisecond sound into a 1 :17 second composition, which took many years to superimpose and further re-sample the fragment into a strict bombardment of fractal concrete sound. within a “tradition of discrete spectrality” and with the satisfactory feeling brought about by orchestrating a 1:17 second work, it become inevitable to extend the invitation to six others to create alternate versions (resulting in seven total variations) using the original as source material/inspiration. strict adherence was required to a rule of the versions being 1:17 seconds in duration, so as to absurdly explore the potentials of this 0.7 millisecond sound.

b-side

lary seven (the analogue society's minister of audiology and star of "the avant garde showcase") "used a direct transfer from the master recording to his ampex 1/4-inch tape machine." it's in lary seven's version that the original is most easily identifiable. lary uses real-time cut-and-splice, switching and mirroring techniques alongside dangerously comical use of feedback at his legendary plastikville studio in nyc. the result is a pure analogue work which, juxtaposed against the original, introduces a clear textural acceleration to the sonic onslaught which follows ...

evol is a music project of roc jimenez de cisneros and its what's innate in his synthesized electro-acoustic contribution whether your cartridge/pickup will implode, speakers explode, or both. the tracking and sound pressure levels (spl) of this composition are rather profound to say the least. you are left experiencing a gravitational deftness and a purposeful sense of tonal humor. post mastering at the lathe-cutting studio, scott haggart commented "this was the piece that almost resulted in the mastering engineer taking a hit out on me."

felix kubin lives and works against gravity with sci-fi pop/noise/animation films/radio plays/experimental broadcasting. as a messenger of exploding lungs, he started the label gagarin records in 1998 and rules the syndicate of counter-noise since 9.9.1999. it was obvious that the fridge of kubin be opened and an ultratransient work of spatial cool and magnitude land upon the geometrical dark counter of the vinyl. we see felix kubin shift from his "legendary and unforgettable dance-hall soirees" and introduce a kind of post-klangkrieg otherworld of sound.

white daughter are nathan bennett and mark bihler, who use their russian cold war synth and signature monolithic guitar to strip the original to a dense heaviness which rests on the knife-edge of beauty and horror. this is as close to how the 1:17 project would have been had joe meek and john carpenter found each another propositioned with the same rules as white daughter.

charlie mcalister is regarded as the most elusive of outsider artists currently living east of the appalachian mountains. you are more likely to find charlie building a boat or theorizing about botulism than to meet him as the charlie we know that we don't know at all. after a decade of correspondence with scott haggart via transatlantic postal mail, this contribution, not so subtly, hints at charlie's most celebrated theme, i.e. fishing, and manages to capture and cast a "fishun rod" into the mix whilst heavily manipulating but retaining identity in the original.

jan van den dobbelsteen is one half of jada and professor of the incredible. jan teaches us about "two very important things in the adventures of melody making ... the rise and fall." falling nothing short of what will become surely a jadaistic vocal anthem we find the primary elements of a vocal sample, fragments of sound one can't quite put ones finger on, swinging in and out of phase hard-right / hard-left, obscuring linear comprehensibility and bringing the 1:17 project to a fitting resolution (for the moment).

felix kubin / wojt3k kucharczykterriterrortorium” seven inch single record

  • grunwald tannenberg
  • kathedrale kopernikus - katedra kopernika
  • hochzeit der hymnen - wesele hymnów
gagarin press release...
"this 7 inch contains extracts of the radio play territerrortorium commissioned by the austrian and german broadcasting stations orf and deutschlandradio berlin. on side a two famous battles are re-animated: in 1410 the order of teutonic knights suffered defeat at grunwald, outfoxed by an united army of polish and lithuanians. 500 years later, the german army conquered the highly superior russian army at a nearby location called tannenberg. this political cocktail comes with a decent flavour of imperial disco! side b features two songs: kathedrale kopernikus - katedra kopernika is a binational ritual chant summoning the spirit of the ghost of kopernikus: divided body is half pain. hochzeit der hymnen - wesele hymnow is a beautiful unborn child of two hymns composed by one utopian conscience."

felix kubin lives and works against the gravity with sci-fi pop/noise/animation films/radio plays/experimental broadcasting. as the messenger of exploding lungs he started his label "gagarin records" in 1998 and rules the "syndicate of counter-noise" since 9.9.1999.

felix kubin & coolhaven - suppe für die nacht
korm plastics kp 3025
cd only

korm plastics is proud to present the eleventh release in the brombron series. originally a co-production between staalplaat and extrapool, it is now hosted by co-curator frans de waard. in the year 2000 frans de waard and extrapool started the brombron project. two or more musicians become artists in residence in extrapool, an arts initiative in nijmegen, the netherlands, with a fully equipped sound recording studio. these artists can work in a certain amount of time on a collaborative project; a project they always wished to do, but didn't have the time or the equipment to realize. since 2002 worm, a rotterdam based music organisation, is also taking part in brombron and this new release is the first to emerge out of their studios.

many years ago, felix kubins uncle walter knoth was looking for a composer to musically illustrate some of his old- fashioned brilliant schlager texts. naturally, his first choice was his own nephew felix - but obviously this young guy did not have the versatile qualities to manage such a thing on his own.

walter placed some big advertisements in all the important german music mags. after a long period of auditioning madonna- lookalikes, wanna-be-genesis-p-orridges and bearded kraut rock acidheads, dutch pop mogul frans de waard showed interest and decided to take the rotterdam group coolhaven into the boat - an ecclectonoclast trio consisting of dorn, fregge and guy simons. this menage-- quatre was supposed to record another top-selling album for de waards brombron series.

due to budget reasons the musicians were only given a period of one week to work on their songs in a dirty old studio in rotterdam (studio l6s - for all your special projects). nevertheless, the hyperactive quartett managed to record about 18 hours of rough material which was finally melted down to 42 minutes of sheer brilliance. under the influence of strange instruments, dusty corners and atmospheric pain, the recording resulted in a fruitful mixture of german weirde welle optagonism, conservative hiphop, stockhausen schlger, no improv mixing and gabberpop. the mixing was done in long sessions (the longest being 36 hours) where everybody could have his say. thats why it took 18 months to release the bitch. but here she is; suppe fr die nacht. have some. and don't ask questions.

back in stock! wow! long a sufferer of kubin-mania, i was quite stoked to hear a little bit of this one late night @ the a-musik shop. and now we have some copies fresh from the dat.pol crew (our recent guests @ the reckankomplex).

far more relevant than simply a bit of trivia in felix’s past, we have the original recording that he (as x2) and his sister (co-the-o) made between 1981 and 1985. apparently this was all due to appear in the later days of the zick-zack empire, and in fact alfred hilsburg himself recounts his trepidious meetings and dealings with a prepubescent kubin back in the day(s).

given the current cultural euphoria surrouding those fateful ndw days, and the interest-rise in groups like die tödliche doris and der plan, this issue simply could not have come at a greater time...

felix kubin:
bruder luzifer (1982-2010)
23 track cd anthology

for three decades hamburg’s felix kubin operated as an undercover sci-fi pop visionary. lurching from seasick electronics to dramatic outsider songcraft, the highlights of kubin’s engaging teenage experiments (krematorien) and later pop masterworks (lightning strikes) mingle here with electrified spaghetti-western romps (sabàta) and terminal noise-spasms (dead end brain).

lovingly curated, this deluxe collector’s edition features exclusive liner notes, unpublished photos, rare 7 sides and forgotten tracks.

x+y= xy
10 citas a ciegas
10 blind dates
(alku, 17)

‘when the two have run each other through, the path to your destiny will open’(excerpt from ‘resident evil’ for nintendo game cube, 2002).

yops!
this is anna and roc from barcelona.
we reach you cause we'd like to invite you to take part in one of our nextalku projects.

alku's new compilation is called "x + y = xy".
it is a different approach to collaborations/splits, based on the idea of "blind dates".
we arrange you a "blind date" with another artist. kind of a "blind split".
you must send us a piece of exactly 2 minutes, and so has the other invited person (your couple).
we get your piece and his piece (exactly same lenght). then we overlap both.
x (your piece) + y (the other guy piece) = xy (resulting track on the cd)
please send your track in a cd.

the tracks we have got so far are just amazing and the ones we have tried to overlap work fucking brilliantly. the blind date thingee works top.

hope you enjoy the project as much as we do.
please reply as fast as possible
thanx a lot

lucky kitchen press release...
fantasy takes place in a dimension not subject to the normal bounds of material reality. fantasy is created by the ability of the imagination to form ideas beyond sensory detail. for the child (and often the artist) there is no essential division between reality and unreality. only through what coleridge termed the "willing suspension of unbelief" can an "adult" obtain the full impact of fantasy. *

1 aerospace soundwise is todd carter, a sound engineer from chicago. in addition to his solo work on diskono, he is a member of tv pow with releases on gentle giant, box media, and upcoming on staalplaat.

2 evol are journalists and musicians anna and roc from barcelona. in addition to work on their own label alku, they have work released on mego.

3 felix kubin and tim buhr are klangkrieg, who along with reznicek made this track for us. all three have been very busy in the hamburg electronic silly for many years. they have work together and seperately on a-musik, audioview, cling film, staubgold, and others.

4 sachiko matsubara is an artist from tokyo. her work with ground zero, iso, and filament are considered classics already. in addition to her own label amoebic, she has work on extreme and more.
