november 2012 release ; ... home-game version of a gig that took place a year earlier at mystery train records in amherst, ma (and was subsequently recreated as a “release party” for this particular object) :: a long set by noted ct free-lung vet paul flaherty (which takes up the entirety of the first side), then a short text-sound piece by sam gaskin, followed by a set by valley süpper-grüppe white limo (feat fat worm of error’s chris “angst hase pfeffer nase” cooper, jess “schurt kwitters” godard ... as well as tumble cat “joshua vrysen” poof poofy poof) ...

like all of the greatest live “festival” records – woodstock ii (cotillion ’71), mar y sol (atco ’72) & 1968 memphis country blues festival (blue horizon ’69) – mystery triangle is an especially exceptional souvenir for those people who were there when it happened. but unlike dud compilatons, mystery triangle provides a truly fine sonic gush for even those of us who were too confused (or scared) to “make” the actual “scene”.

in november 2011, a goddamn magnificent display of talent went down at joshua burkett’s mystery train store in amherst, ma. and thankfully, edward “ted” lee, the whirling dervish of feeding tube, was there to capture the sounds on tape.

first up is paul flaherty – the godfather of all that is good and weird in new england. paul has been woefully under-documented in solo performance. his maniacal sax work is well represented in duo and group settings, but he has always been a bit shy about pure solo work-outs, and he shouldn’t be. the beauty of his turn here is stunning. relying less on the freak-gush that marks his ensemble work, flaherty creates a pure, blazing line of melodic invention that is a testament to both the power of his lungs and the creativity of his process. stoned and flowing, his side rips gently into the air with a series of compositional statements that are gorgeous, fully-imagined and a testament to the brilliance of no-net-improvising. without other players gumming up his works, paul moves through moods and thoughts with ferocious surety, creating one of the finest recordings in his catalogue. truly a wowser of a set.

sam gas can sometimes relies on conceptual theories for his sets, but here is an engine of pure glossalic genius. working in the tradition of the great sound-poets, sam offers a bravura performance that stretches itself deep into the schwitters zone, conjuring up subconscious connections to memories locked far beneath our surfaces. as the great dredd foole noted after the set, “no one uses their voice any more.” an amazing thing.

finally, white limo (chris cooper, jess goddard and joshua vrysen), hit the road with a set of cracked electronics halfway between serious aleatory ensembles like gruppo di improvvisazione nuova consonanza and proletarian ass-crack noisers such as id m theft able. although they don’t seem to play often, this trio (with deep roots throughout of the odd-noise underground) has cracked the code that has daunted many similarly-intented combos, making sounds that manage to be both deeply resonant and weirdly engaging. totally boss.

upon reflection, it’s difficult for me to think of a more fully satisfying festival record. every performer, every note feels essential. one of the best. no shit.

september 2010 release ; label-free, self-issued gem from fat worm of error’s chris cooper, heard here exercising his considerable “digital composition” chops over two side-length constructs ...

i’m gleaning that much of this stems from chris’ guitar playing ; but really the source-sounds could be just about anything, micro-edited down to whiz-bang zaps & little room-tone addled improvisations ... all with heavy post-processing (the stereo range is all over the place) bringing it closer to a hecker-styled pure-math extrapolation that anything decidedly “musical” ...

criminal that this isn’t out on vinyl via a label with a wider dispersion-net, but for now we’ll take chris’ home-brew edition ; highly recommended !!!

september 2010 release ; .. god, has it really been four years since “pregnant babies pregnant with pregnant babies” ??? it has, hasn’t it ... damn ...

well, in those four years i’ve seen fwoe play about 8 times, always incredible, never redundant, always resplendent, never “piled up” ; always dealing in a peculiar sort of economy wherein each member of the band strikes individually, at preordained moments, all hashed out via some collective “hive mind” system that, despite having witnessed it in action so many times, i don’t think i’ll ever fully understand ...

four years is a long time, and from the sound of things here they’ve spent it well, playing these 11 pieces over & over again, “trout mask” style, hammering down the bent nails until each stray element has landed in it’s own temporal / spectral space ... it’s truly a beautiful thing to behold ; no one else out there is working in anywhere near this level of organized aleatoricism & doing it with such panache (singer jess godard’s costume-changes have been known to get up to double-digits ; drummer neeeeel young has found a new poly-rhythm between 5/17 & 3/15 ; guitarist chris cooper’s moustache is long & finely hewn) ...

lp comes coated in mark beyer artwork (extremely apropos choice guys !!!) with a lyric-sheet allowing you to follow along at home ( “crush the placid tubers! potato dentata vagina errata tomato stigmata on flaccid pubescent blah blah blah” ) ; entirely incredible & well worth the wait ...

maybe its something in the raw cows milk one can so fortuitously procure here in western massachusetts, or maybe it’s that lysergic haze of berkshire foothill emanation, but whatever it may be, it is most definitely in manifestation as the five-headed rock n’ noise n’ bleet n’ zzrrp n’ roll n’ weirdcore phenomenon known only as fat worm of error.

after more than six years of live gig decimation and confusion and a smattering of cassettes, cdrs, “legit” lp releases (on labels as swank as load and ultra eczema), fwoe has become, along with noise nomads and dinosaur jr, as one of the most astounding musical whatsis factors in the pioneer valley.

it was after being stunned into melted delight one evening at our local hang (the flywheel ‘natch) by the dead battery guitar, silent psycho-killer bass, drums punked beyond the free thump joy of john stevens n’ drumbo, and the supremely swinging costume-cuhraziness of the freekwency singer…well, we wanted to do a, ahem, “proper” lp.

put this genius fringe into the studio with justin pizzoferrato (that’s right, the guy who helps engineer j mascis and t moore sides) and capture the delirious magic of fwoe in their inimitable prime. and we did! and mark beyer did the cover art! and the drummers name is neel young! and this lp rules hard, and if you happened to be in the same room as the live fwoe this last summer than you know: fat worm of error has got the coolest moustache in town. case closed.

years-in-the-making (vaguely remember hearing rumor of this record’s pending existence back in 2007) ; glad it turned out so nicely !!! a perfect way to introduce yourselves to either’s work ...

proposed for sedimental as a glorious masquerade by boston based by bhob rainey (bsc, nmperign, and infinite collaborative scenarios) and including the opportunity to also release solo work by western, ma’s chris cooper (fat worm of error, xo4, buddies, bsc, etc.) in his angst hase pfeffer nase guise proved too devastating a proposition to avoid. so we did not…avoid it.

here we have a circular cover project, or a which came first, a who is whoconundrum. those who know the respective artists work well enough should be able to suss the jig, and despite a label-less disc there are other ways. so, what do we have here musically? densely collaged musique concrete-ism edited at a rather brisk pace, essentially. what matters, besides each artist’s specific musical means, is both the sensitivity and the breadth the artists bring to the project. concise. humorous. kick-ass. classic.

do we really need to discuss rainey’s importance on things experimental at this point? i hope not. chris cooper on the hand does deserve a bit more elucidation. though well enough known through the circles in the above mentioned projects, it seems that his particular genius through the discipline of his guitar work is still not wholly understood. he possesses notable music knowledge as well as theoretical approaches that are generally not employed in the lo-fi, experimental noise and punk worlds in which he operates. his contribution to this artifact is yet another important piece of evidence that continues to build an airtight case for his necessary-ness.
