telecult powersstars are the eyes of god” c48 cassette

  • hecate’s fountain: initiation to the temple of pei

  • inner spaced
  • no sleep til nibiru
july 2011 release ; ... a kind of “split tape” by two different lineups of telecult powers :: both featuring mssr.s witchbeam & matthews, albeit guided by excepter’s lala ryan on one piece (the a-side ; she’s doing her best gili smyth via deadpan exhortation & acrid, atonal echo-laden soar over the pair’s acidic constructions) & emeralds / outer space / imaginary softwoods / colored mushroom / the medicine rocksjohn elliott on the other (the b-side ; his presence really does loom large - imagine the free-tonal space of telecult’s particular wormhole-voyage undercut with john’s swooning chordal sawtooth vapor-haze - or, hell, just listen to the sound-sample) ...
draft press release...

d010 :: telecult powers, stars are the eyes of god :: tape

performing with custom-built synthesizers, occult synth duo telecult powers creates abstract electronic music to explore mysteries, mystic states and magickal systems. after forming out of early collaborations between members mister matthews and witchbeam, the duo moved from cleveland to brooklyn where they continued to develop their work over the past few years. currently based in both brooklyn and new orleans , telecult powers remains an active creative force in the underground community. telecult's recorded work can be found on their own label temple of pei, as well as deception island, baked tapes, pizza night, and a few others.

telecult powers' newest release, stars are the eyes of god, enlists the help of two prolific collaborators: hecate’s fountain is telecult joined by lala ryan (of excepter) ; inner spaced is telecult and john elliott (of emeralds, outer space, and imaginary softwoods).

on side a, hecate's fountain's "initiation to the temple of pei" spins spheres of spacious textures which serve as a bed for lala ryan's tripped-out acid-tinged dadaist vocals. reminiscent of cosmic joker's gilles zeitschiff, the trio concocts the perfect blend of alchemical theatrics and kosmiche music.

on side b, inner spaced launches into "no sleep til nibiru," opening with a gushing wall of white noise that shape-shifts into an array of cyclical sounds. the three synth players craft a heavy dark-matter space, with slow, methodical pacing and intention. this tape traverses new landscapes of abstract synth and space music, as wholly engulfing side-length tracks provide an expanded telecult universe.

"self destruction" was recorded in the winter of 2004 and mixed, edited and reprocessed mostly in the winter of 2005. self destruction is the first excepter record to be feature multi-track recording and overdubbing. outside of dan houglands drum programming and a few vision directives from producer john fell ryan, the playing is entirely improvised by the group. self destruction is also the first excepter record to prominently feature the polyphonic synthesizer playing of nathan corbin. the husband-wife duo of caitlin cook and calder martin make the final statement on the album as they take sole vocal duties on the last track, your house. this recording has been edited short for maximum sonic impact on vinyl." - recording notes.

exceptervacation / “forget me”” long playing record

  • a:8:30
  • b:13:13
fusetron press release...
"even though it would be wrong not to consider these protest songs against the back porch policies of certain undisclosed and secure locations, we shouldn’t let them come between us. excepter says, "yeah, well play" ... freestyle, the crawl, the butterfly, the breast, the rest. "how long will you stay?" just as expressions and intuitions reflect the oceans unleashed, there is no desert island, dig, just the big, bare teeth of excepter there, smiling beneath. "you forgot something?" to survive the coming weather, you are going to need to know a sailor, a captain, an engineer, a figurehead, as well as a pirate, so show ... a continuous stream of music split into two sides. performed and mixed live to stereo. ss excepter:"were only a world away."” - excepter.

heavy tapes (usa) #ht insayngel lp

insayngelinsayngel” long playing record

  • plastic ancestor
  • dig yer heels
  • lets not forget

  • hows it handle
  • black rock way
december 2008 release ; one-off between the rhythm section of sightings (jon lockie and richard hoffman) and excepter’s caitlin cook & calder martin ...

seeing as excepter’s strong suit has always been their array of squiggly noises &, conversely, sightings’ laser-tight rhythmic structures, this thing has pure win written all over it ... blasted-on-through fidelity helps keep everything gelled, and even when i’m not 100% entirely sold on caitlin’s occasional art-damage / tunnel-void delivery, she squeezes in/out some great cosmic-mantra moves elsewhere ...

tiny edition c/o mike & maya’s heavy tapes ; the last vinyl from them disappeared before i could get in an “eagle” - just sayin’ ...

insayngel s/t lp

edition of 500, full color printed covers

we saw insayngel play some time in 2008 or maybe the end of 2007 at glasslands. immediately we said to each other "this band needs to have a record out. let's do it." we talked to the band after the gig and they were down -- it was recorded, mastered by our friend todd cavallo, and sent off to the plant. insayngel is calder, caitlin, richard, and john. calder and caitlin are vizusa and used to jam excepter, and richard and john are the brutal rhythm unit of sightings. an intriguing combination of players to say the least, this lp brings a 30th century sound to the history of new york city. the locked, wrecked rhythms, desparate, gorgeous wails, and shredded, anxious guitars are symphonic, undulating, impossible. a serious now vision that impressed us deeply enough to be the first lp we've ever done.

art by calder, pressed in brooklyn, new york.

excepter / leb-lazethe troglodytes / life in the wilderness” long playing record

excepter "the troglodytes" /
leb-laze "life in the wilderness"

500 copies, may 2006

surveying their output to date, excepter’s methodological parallels with the nouveau-noise scene only account for part of their mystery. the prolific nyc sound unit does indeed trade in a collapsing concoction of mpc beats, electro-acoustic drone, and yes, sometimes, harsh noise. thenceforth, a note to ye: stop fondling the genre genie and know that "the troglodytes" is excepter’s righteously bent party record - a monument to f(l)ailing house beats and disembodied rock stars.

the sounds on this ep were recorded live at 611 florida ave, washington, dc. on this recording, excepter is john fell ryan (ex-nnck), calder martin (vizusa), caitlin cook (vizusa), nathan corbin (lake), and dan hougland.

having spent the past few years touring with the prefuse 73 steamroller, leb-laze (atlanta dj and producer ryan rasheed) might be expected to drop some kinda glitch-hop steez on life in the wilderness, the follow-up to his debut eastern developments ep, pressure. instead, life in the wilderness finds rasheed lost in a fever dream, ducking and dodging an army of michael knight imposters high on crunk juice. as the paranoia mounts, rasheed plays ringmaster to a dense mix of ping-ponging guitars, rolling drums, and his own keyboard manipulations.

this record is ideal for sporting events and powder-fueled car chases. life in the wilderness features randy castello (the flakes, tight bros network), alex lambert (the flakes, blame game, lie & swell), nisa asokan (fifth planet press), and john simmons (knamiproko).

getting rid of the glue (2006)
format: 12” vinyl
released november 30, 2006
limited 300 copies first run.

getting rid of the glue is a phrase first used by henry cowell before introducing the music of christian wolff, earl brown, morton feldman, and john cage at a new school concert in 1950s.

john cage in his influential lecture entitled “history of experimental music in the united states” recounts the remarks of henry cowell. "that here were ... composers getting rid of glue. that is: where people had felt the necessity to stick sounds together to make a continuity, we ... felt the opposite necessity to get rid of the glue so that sounds would be themselves." - john cage.

this will be the first in a series of "getting rid of the glue" themed lps dedicated to improv / experimental / & noise music.

limited to 300 lps so they wont last long.

...

dirty churches - blissed out and relentless feedback - improv - noise - free-rock collective (featuring members of hula and the beets)

spin-17 - motoko shimizu & ed chang. "spin-17 is a duo experimental project which explores contrasts and connections between harmony and noise, electronics and acoustics, toddlers and tea-totallers, obscenity and poetry. no genre is safe and the boundaries between art and doleful indulgence are blurred." - from their website

k.p. - improv-free-noise collective who keep a low profile but have recently been spotted in brooklyn with equipment in hand headed who-knows-where. keep an eye out for them. they're out there... somewhere...

big a little a - a never-ending rhythm experiment. "call the brooklyn-based quintet what they call their debut:big a little a, wherein every member doubles as a drummer and manipulator of electronic components, all shouting or murmering amid their spacey clamor." -- seattle weekly

fessenden - chicago-based electro-acoustic trio consisting of joshua convey, stephen fiehn, and steven hess (on, pan american, dropp ensemble)

eager meek - andré joel paul and a guitar

mialessot - mialessot on prepared guitar accompanied by daniel carter on saxophone (ny free-jazz legend) and old ghost (an assailant on homemade analog synths).

maria chavez - "improvised/abstract turntabilism" and it consists of all electro-acoustic sounds from only vinyl and needle. maria melts and mutates all forms of vinyl and has a collection of 8 broken styluses (and counting) that all get different sounds.

talibam! - a self-described "shitstorm skronk" trio consisting of ed bear - feedbacksaphone (crossing clouds), matt mottel - keyboards (nyc improv musician), kevin shea - drums (storm & stress, coptic light).

excepter - is a self-defined “synthetic protest band engineered to erase cultural distinctions through polarized confusion”” led by jfr, former member of the collective no neck blues band.
