andrea centazzo / alvin curran / evan parkerreal time one” compact disc

  • real time (20.10)
  • reel time one (6.17)
  • reel time two (6.48)
  • reel time three (8.17)
  • ending (6.52) (unissued)
new tone press release...
andrea centazzo: percussion, percussion synthesizer
alvin curran: synthesizer, piano, tromba
evan parker: soprano & tenor sax

this cd presents a live recording by three outstanding musicians recorded in 1977. centazzo had collaborated both with alvin curran in duo and with evan parker in duo, trio and sextet before this recording.

alvin curran, american composer living in rome, member of the ensemble musica elettronica viva (along with fredrick rzewski, steve lacy, richard teitelbaum a.o.) was related to the post-cagean school and to the improvised music.

evan parker, english, coming from the tradition of jazz, had developing a very personal style deeply rooted in the total improvisation.

the idea of centazzo to call them to form a trio was a very successful one. as a trio the group performed many concerts in italy and recorded several hours of music. the three different languages of the musicians found "a common ground of expression in which the stylistic elements from different musical backgrounds came together and created a unique blend for that era", as centazzo describes the experience.the three mixes the electronic sounds of analog synthesizer with the acoustic instruments producing a very special combination in which is very difficult to recognize the sources of the sound.

the cd is enriched by an unissued track. a second cd including music completely unissued will follow later on in this same series.

cd

disinformation releases clearly aspire, like dr. who's tardis, to be something bigger on the inside than they are on the outside - loaded with hints, clues and allusions designed to tempt the listener into investigating further. al-jabr, disinformation's latest exercise in weapons-grade electronica, is certainly no exception. its predecessor, antiphony (ash # 3.4), presented the remix process as a parody of the techniques of traditional church music, while al-jabr takes its central analogy from an underground publication which circulated in medieval europe. the 9th century astronomer, geographer and mathematician abu ja'far muhammad ibn musa introduced european accountants to both 'arabic' (ie sanskrit) numerals, but also the system of symbolic mathematical reduction whose name corrupts into english from its arabic form; equations as fractures, solutions as surgery, remixes as reunifications.

for those not familiar with the disinformation brand name, this project consists of djing, publishing and live performance with recordings of unusual electromagnetic (ie radio) noise. on al-jabr itself, rather than creating antiphonal responses to the original source material, the contributors 'equate' the raw material with their own idiosyncratic input; lawrence casserley transforms the rhythmic intricacies of how long data noise into a symphony of crushed and shattered slates; evan parker's wailing saxophone complements the pulsating drones of the city's power distribution networks, transforming the original 'national grid', which was recorded live at the museum of installation, into 'london's overthrow', after the apocalyptic visions of the victorian mystic and arsonist jonathan martin.

the noise group tactile take ultralongwave sub-bass radio noise generated by the tig welders in sculpture/sound group oubliette's metal workshop, and recasts them as the ambience of 'pandemonium' - the infernal underground city engraved by jonathan martin's slightly saner brother john. jim o'rourke adds uniquely american humour and a rock 'n' roll analogue of national grid. simon fisher turner twists broadcast data noise into gorgeous rolling melodies. t:un[k] systems' track 'synaptic radio' pitches vlf band radio recordings of interference radiated by electrical storms against pristine lab pure sine waves - a vision of electrical-engineering-as-fine-art created by disinformation for events at moi and the south london gallery. 'raxor' by mechos isolates individual lightning strikes and inserts them in a lattice of clicks and low frequency drones, whose deceptive simplicity belies the subtly disorientating effects of their unfolding, twisting rhythms.

al-jabr includes a text by the 17th century watchmaker robert hooke, which suggests that noise has potential use as a diagnostic and can aid scientific investigative methods. if this cd has value beyond its specialised entertainment value, then it also shows that noise, as an artform, can demonstrate real conceptual and technical ingenuity, and can not only express visceral, cathartic intensity (ecstasy/ugliness/beauty/rage) but also explore complex and emotive anthropological and intellectual themes.

...

alienation strategies are the stock shots of the avant garde; to move an audiences expectations and lift them on to new planes of perception. cage’s silent piece 4’33 is perhaps the ultimate example - although lamonte young’s piano piece for david tudor no.1, in which the piano is offered a bale of hay and a bucket of water, might run it a close second.

the effect of alienating is to surprise - to make an aesthetic mismatch. but alienation strategies need not be confined to single pieces; they might equally be conveyed by more substantial aesthetic shifts of practice. i remember frederic rzewski suggesting that cornelius cardew’s move from the musical avant garde to communism was itself a piece. this may seem a cynical interpretation of his late friends motives but maybe the theme of alienation ran through cardew’s work more deeply that the other artists with whom he was associated.

much of contemporary improvising music might seem to owe its development via similar alienating strategies. dispensing with composition. using traditional instruments in unconventional ways. not using traditional instruments at all. audiences and musicians alike were fascinated/repelled by new techniques and the development of performance within the music which at times transcended even sound production. but all alienation strategies and all avant gardes become exhausted. the effect is weakened by repeated applications. and the fragility of the alienating method is that it is inherently reactive. it exists by virtue of negating a negative.

many progressives in established music use improvisation as a medium of refreshment. it is not seen as a novel experience in which musicians take music apart and construct it anew. the classical tradition remains intact and improvisation and experimentalism are subservient; minor appendages to the main current of musical life. and, in terms of their use as alienating methods they are certainly less potent than they were. this argument is difficult to counter if we accept the terms in which it is ultimately couched; that of alienation and the act of negating.

there are, of course, varying degrees of alienation. a musician with a western heritage of beethoven and company on his back may feel the tradition alienating, especially if he has a more radical cultural/political perspective than the tradition allows. such a tradition is likely to be weightier than the more informal and tenuous connection a british musician could possibly have with american jazz. the alienating methods employed by the musical avant garde (c. 1960/70) often reduced composition to a comical parody and offered ultra democratic ideals - making all players no matter their abilities equal in the music making process. in some sense of course this ideal made for expansive and creative opportunities. it is interesting to note however that many of the advocates of this leveling have scuttled back to the protective skirts of the music establishment, leaving their unschooled associates high and dry, now that the experimentalism is (for them) exhausted.

alongside these alienating methods, entwined with them, was another ethos - the improvisational. it may have taken lessons from jazz and the new musical activities of the western avant garde; it may well have been attracted by the general spirit of rebellion. but it was never imbued with such a severe sense of alienation. if alienation existed in the improvising community it was never perceived in the same cultural/artistic context as projected by the more formal elements in the avant garde.

twenty years on what remains and has developed from those tentative steps of free improvisation is a whole range of techniques and an open-ended aesthetic of enquiry propelled by a dialogical mode. the musicians, such as these on this album, are at ease in this medium, even though they may be ever striving for some elusive sense of musical fulfillment. they are not driven by an alienation strategy, they do not seek to demonstrate an alternative form. they are content to perform in a mode which has become the simple and natural means of musical expression. any sense of negating the negative is weak, because the musicians are not ideologically trapped by musical/cultural forms from they might feel alienated. having no firm musical tradition they have made their own. they have superseded other other ways of making music; couching their objectives and methods in relation to the desired expression of hitherto unrealized cultural ideals.

cd - 177 ringtones

the process of transferring made-to-measure ringtones to your mobile phone is, at present, a fixed casino... chart hits, cod celebrity voices, action heroes, lame keyboard melodies... so the likelihood of hearing one of these on the 07.34 from the suburbs is, at present, remote, although new ranges of mobiles are on hand to promise better things. anticipating this, each of the included has been composed with exactly this eventuality in mind. they are in one way or another intended to be experienced as isolated, personal interventions: low-res loops, creature calls, in low-res environments...

in whichever form you find them here, do sample remodel and employ these humble suggestions... we assume you already agree that the cheap 'cheep cheep' tones of nokia, ericsson and the others leave a lot to be desired. but there is huge commercial possibility here, not least with the fact that these selections have not been motivated by database usage... this is far cooler, and the contributors have responded accordingly... this release shows what is possible and how far behind the phone companies actually are despite their desperation to uncover new ways of selling the next generation of phones to an already saturated market.
