robert turman / neon depththe depth of neon b/w indes of right & wrong” c29 cassette

  • robert turman - the depth of neon

  • neon depth - index of right & wrong
january 2011 release ; an intense, howling set of electronic music, with a side of music by emeraldsjohnouter spaceelliott & david russellsnake” ‘s neon depth ... purposefully re-negotiated upon by 80’s tape-loop maverick robert turman ...
a soundesign press release...

robert turman v. neon depth | a soundesign recording 049

the ninth tape in the asr "versus" split series is a disorienting voyage into the depths.

on side a robert turman (co-founder of non and frequent collaborator with aaron dilloway) masterfully reassembles looped portions of neon depth. robert creates a stark post-industrial nightmare with a bone chilling collision of siren and serenity.

side b is the original track that robert used to construct "the depth of neon" with. "an index of right & wrong" is an anxiety laden trip taken from a 2008 collab between john ellitott (outer space) & david russell (collapsed arc).

pro-dubbed cassettes graciously mastered by wyatt howland.

imaginary softwoods - the path of spectrolite

the path of spectrolite is the latest full length recording from imaginary softwoods. early comments have praised this album and state that while this recording retains some if the icy drone sound from some previous softwoods release, this is a great progression and a bit more active. an extremely beautiful album entirely of sounds created by synthesizer and voice, this is an essential piece of the imaginary softwoods discography that you are sure to love.

amethyst sunset as-007

much welcome vinyl issue of the 2010 cassette release from john elliott (outer space, emeralds) and sam goldberg (radio people, docile dawn) that sold out at the source and distros rather quickly. further exploring of the zones on the previously released "mist" lp, the duo take it one step further with their electronics unleashing a record which sounds like it could be the soundtrack to an amazing 70's / 80's sci fi movie. the tracks have been remastered for vinyl by james plotkin, and the vinyl lacquer was cut for 45rpm at d+m in berlin.

alterity problem / outer spacesplit” c26 cassette

  • alterity problem - a new problem
  • alterity problem - heating problem
  • alterity problem - the kid’s a heater

  • outer space - aspartame
  • outer space - usa endless
may 2011 release ; here & below lie the 2011 spring deception island batch, a courtesy of chrisbee maskmadak’s (oddly absent from the batch himself, but given the bee mask campaign that’s slowly unfolding via john’s spectrum spools, we’ll give him a pass) good grace & stick-tuitive-nuss...

these all come in the prescribed soft poly-boxes, with a double-sided pro-printed color insert (each with its own 3d polygonal rendering ; i haven’t cracked the code yet but the solution is imminent), a bit of reflective glitter-tape, and the cassette itself (clear shells, clear liners, just the map / survey / trail detail of the cover art) ...

... unlike the seemingly vast majority of active contemporary tape-scene participants, these di batches are at best semi-annual & should be treated with proper reverence ... as i’ve made my love for chris’ whole outlying aesthetic choice-set clear via prior batches i won’t do so again here ; just let it be of known record that, afa my personal taste(s) range i rate these as the proverbial cream of the crop ...

... anyways ; had the pleasure of catching john & alex on tour last year (in a basement in brigham circle no less) where i quickly fell in love with alex’ approach to jerry-rigged analogue percussion & zonked guitar filigree ... while the two went on to form a duo aggregate of the mushroom rocks, this is in fact a split release, covering a side each by either’s solo axes (although it’s alluded to that ap is in fact a duo) ...

i’m tempted to represent this carefully considered object by a long sound-clip of the alterity problem side, as, alone, its one of the better sides of any tape i’ve heard recently, with its a-periodic syn-drums & gnarly sawtooth aggregates remind me of the best traits of the post-ndw scene (der plan, specifically, albeit sans vocals) but then john’s side is just so perfect (plus let’s face it ; his is not exactly that of a stranger around here) & i’d be remiss not to woo prospective consumers with a good chunk of gnarly harmonizer interference heading into his trademark falling dodecaphonic / pentatonic sequencer baptisms as they’re the audio equivalent of a soft pretzel covered in a rare, possibly spanish, savory jelly ...
deception island press release...

di38: outer space / alterity problem split c26 (edition of 300).

two fantastic new outer space tracks in the moebius strip / infinite riff mode of the arbor lp, b/w some brilliant cracked / outsider electronics (occasionally evoking telecult powers with really outre syndrums -- dude is from montreal, after all!) from alex moskos of aids wolf / drainolith / thames.

bonkers split concept: alterity problem, the montreal-based duo of lifer oddballs alex moskos (also of aids wolf, drainolith, thames, and the medicine rocks) and cryptic associate joel taylor turn in a suite of extra-damaged jams about kids, heaters, and problems, these titular concerns reflecting a certain noirish surrealism and a slightly outre pose — both very much present in the audible payload — that distinguish alterity problem from their most obvious contemporaries. sometimes it’s like a matra 12 heard through a wheelbarrow of pills and six miles of bulletproof glass; other times it’s like spinning d-beat recs under general anaesthesia. sometimes there are oddly, immensely satisfying syndrums in all the right/wrong places.

the flip finds john elliott (of emeralds, mist, and many others) back on di with a fresh side of outer space tracks that work a polished, high-impact aesthetic angle very distinct from the decaying hyperabstraction of last year’s massive lightyear demonstrations while continuing to radiate the same throughgoing trippiness and post / antihuman drive. first, “aspartame” materializes from a glowing sandstorm of synth and vocals, coalescing into one of the most dazzling and aqueous examples of elliott’s signature endlessly unfurling klein bottle riffstyle to date. the ensuing nine minutes of this piece display a mastery of the “dusseldorf style” of building deceptively intricate, episodic tracks on metronomic backbones, as claustrophobia and a sense of awakening to the reality of being chased by something superfucked gradually dawns, only to give way to an epic sunrise over a desert of ash and bleached bones. the finale, “usa endless (dark commentary?) has hung around long enough to see all inclination toward propulsion surgically removed. we’re floating six inches off the ground, in the driveway with the doors open, engine running, and wheels spinning endlessly, far too fucked to do anything other than sit back and watch the dash boil while sunlight falls like iridescent jelly on the seats. extra weird.

alterity problem is joel taylor and alex moskos.

november 2010 release ; ah, excellent ... was worried this reissue of emeralds johnouter spaceelliott’s obscure imaginary softwoods output would slip us by ; alas john was on the ball & supplied us with a decent grip for the laterally inclined ...

i’m tempted to frame this as john’s stab at satie-styled salon music ; certainly the melancholic, cyclic phrasing of the more “hands-on” pieces (listen to the sound-sample) do remind me of the velvet gentleman ... but then again the other half of the record is in familiar territories ; gorgeous filtered drone-cloudings with endless layers of almost subliminal, fleeting automations that are anything but static ...

incredibly nice euro / uk edition (manufactured by the boomkat folks by proxy for brad / digitalis) ; similar spec to the recent emego vinyl of “does it look like i’m here” ; full color euro gatefold double with full-color everything (with interesting, almost jandek-esque label-art) ; highly recommended !!!

digi060: imaginary softwoods s/t 2lp

three years ago, a triple cassette oddity appeared out of nowhere adorned in washed-out nature collages and zero information. turns out that john elliot of emeralds was behind the madness, and after further dissection of the sounds enclosed and it all began to make sense.

those three tapes (one yellow, one blue, one red) were the first taste of something that felt like a lost private-press object from the early european electronic experimentations of the '60s & '70s. each vignette is its own story, its own exploration. synthesizers and other electronics are stripped to their bare bones, never drifting beyond a mere five minutes. it's the brevity that is the guiding hand, though. every tone and every note is carefully considered and utilized as you're sucked into a world of washed-out colors and sullen landscapes.

one thing that immediately stands out with these pieces is just how restrained elliot is with them. it adds considerable tension, even if its understated, giving the album a surprising amount of emotional depth. each piece is its own miniature mountain, traversed and left behind all in a matter of minutes. as you interact with the subtlety changing harmonics and tonal shifts, you begin to float away into synthetic dreams. if all bedroom albums were this great, i'd never leave the house. a true gem.

completely remastered for vinyl by james plotkin and cut in berlin by d+m. the deluxe vinyl edition is presented in full-color gatefold jackets with all new art from john elliot in conjunction with the inimitable witchbeam.

telecult powersstars are the eyes of god” c48 cassette

  • hecate’s fountain: initiation to the temple of pei

  • inner spaced
  • no sleep til nibiru
july 2011 release ; ... a kind of “split tape” by two different lineups of telecult powers :: both featuring mssr.s witchbeam & matthews, albeit guided by excepter’s lala ryan on one piece (the a-side ; she’s doing her best gili smyth via deadpan exhortation & acrid, atonal echo-laden soar over the pair’s acidic constructions) & emeralds / outer space / imaginary softwoods / colored mushroom / the medicine rocksjohn elliott on the other (the b-side ; his presence really does loom large - imagine the free-tonal space of telecult’s particular wormhole-voyage undercut with john’s swooning chordal sawtooth vapor-haze - or, hell, just listen to the sound-sample) ...
draft press release...

d010 :: telecult powers, stars are the eyes of god :: tape

performing with custom-built synthesizers, occult synth duo telecult powers creates abstract electronic music to explore mysteries, mystic states and magickal systems. after forming out of early collaborations between members mister matthews and witchbeam, the duo moved from cleveland to brooklyn where they continued to develop their work over the past few years. currently based in both brooklyn and new orleans , telecult powers remains an active creative force in the underground community. telecult's recorded work can be found on their own label temple of pei, as well as deception island, baked tapes, pizza night, and a few others.

telecult powers' newest release, stars are the eyes of god, enlists the help of two prolific collaborators: hecate’s fountain is telecult joined by lala ryan (of excepter) ; inner spaced is telecult and john elliott (of emeralds, outer space, and imaginary softwoods).

on side a, hecate's fountain's "initiation to the temple of pei" spins spheres of spacious textures which serve as a bed for lala ryan's tripped-out acid-tinged dadaist vocals. reminiscent of cosmic joker's gilles zeitschiff, the trio concocts the perfect blend of alchemical theatrics and kosmiche music.

on side b, inner spaced launches into "no sleep til nibiru," opening with a gushing wall of white noise that shape-shifts into an array of cyclical sounds. the three synth players craft a heavy dark-matter space, with slow, methodical pacing and intention. this tape traverses new landscapes of abstract synth and space music, as wholly engulfing side-length tracks provide an expanded telecult universe.

october 2010 release ; (e)mego’s vinyl treatment of the band’s early 2009 statement, about which ::

... the long-awaited follow-up to emeraldsbreakthrough album “solar bridge” ... the aforementioned disc was certainly the sleeper-hit of 2008 ; here the band regroup, seemingly unfazed by their sudden notoriety & offer up five new pieces ... notably, mark mcguire’s guitar playing is far more front-and-center than on previous outings (at least after the first few pieces) , and while the synth-arrays of john elliot & steve hauschildt do drone on, there’s more of an ebb & flow to their dovetailing patterns than any straight all-on stasis (plus there’s a bit of drone-singing involved, and that’s always nice) ...

... the music is served well by the d&m cut & general p.v. upgrade ; comes in a handsome euro-gatefold sleeve (much better to pore over the intricacies of the band’s apropos collage-art) ...

living with yourself
cd

electric and acoustic guitar recorded february - september 2009 cleveland and westlake, ohio by mark mcguire.
percussion on "brothers" performed and recorded november 2008 at zombie proof studios, cleveland, ohio by nate scheible. tape samples recorded 1991 - 1998 by mark mcguire sr., jr. edited and arranged by mark mcguire 2009. mastered by james plotkin, july 2010. cut at dubplates & mastering, berlin, july 22nd 2010. layout by mike pollard and mark mcguire.

mark mcguire operates chiefly as guitarist in the legendary emeralds., however he also has racked up an impressive set of solo releases over the last few years (albeit mainly in small to micro print runs).

living with yourself is his new album and we at editions mego hope to meet any demand which may arise from this fine selection of modern crafted guitar tunes. focusing on his family, early friendships and the problems that inevitably develop through years of knowing someone, it takes mcguire’s sound even further out, and contains some his most accomplished songs to date.

the opening track is fine example of mcguire’s magic technique of taking a lone acoustic guitar then transforming the track into bliss-out electro wash looping off into the distance. and tracks like ‘clouds rolling in’ and ‘brain storm’ take off where such mcguire classics as ‘the marfa lights(which incidentally is planned for a future reissue) left off. while connoisseurs of his sound will find all they desire in here, many superb surprises await around every corner. these are songs that cruise, bubble and rise to the top.

available as lp vinyl and cd in digipack.

may 2010 release ; after much speculation & fanpire mongering, emeralds here “arrive” with their thirdproper” album, released on peterpita rehberg’s editions mego ...

a few changes are afoot :: gone are the side-length slow burners, replaced here by a suite of remarkably succint pop numbers, taking the band’s trademark synth / guitar / synth attack into new realms ... also, notably, the production values are through the roof, capturing each stray oscillation and phantom guitar echo in amazing detail ... all things lending to what is undoubtedly the band’s towering recorded achievement thusfar ; finely honed & poised for international superstardom (they’re set to tour japan with fenn’o’berg this summer) ; highly recommended !!!

cd

release date: 24.05.2010

emeralds are john elliott, steve hauschildt, and mark mcguire
recorded july - august 2009 and january - march 2010 in cleveland, ohio
mastered by james plotkin
vinyl cut at dubplates & mastering, berlin
art by emeralds
cover photo by jen gomez
layout by mike pollard and jen gomez

does it look like i’m here?’ is the third official album by emeralds (after "solar bridge" on hanson, and the self-titled lp on their own wagon and gneiss things imprints, as well as countless small edition tapes and cdrs on a host of labels) and once again it presents another radical new direction for this cleveland trio.

it sees the group moving from playing single oscillator analog synthesizers to really complex analog and analog/digital hybrid as well a great deal of guitar synthesizers, not to mention fine tuning their skills as brilliant tunesmiths. simply put, the results are outstanding.

comprising of a number of tracks from their recent  ultra limited 7” vinyl series on wagon, as well new compositions exclusive to this release. this fine selection of tunes surpass anything they have achieved in their 5 year career. perfect melodies intertwined with ripping sequences and a guitar sound that floats perfectly throughout. although most tracks cover new ground in that they follow a shortened ‘pop format’, more long form cuts such as the towering ‘genetic’ and the title track will give fans of their earlier work something to grab onto, or totally let themselves go depending on the state of mind.

having spent all their lives in the relative isolation of cleveland means their music has developed into a vital, stunning unique hybrid that may have not been able to blossom in more active urban centres.

does it look like i’m here?’ heralds a turning point for all those involved and is perfect vivid soundtrack to emerge out of the recent harsh grey winter. fresh, shiny and totally essential.

nihilist (usa) #nihil 67 lp

raglani / outer spacesplit” long playing record

  • raglani - nothing is inevitable
  • raglani - polydream ink
  • raglani - heart of glass

  • outer space - body of light pt.ii
august 2010 release ; ... this particular lp (originally slated as a rags & mike “workbench” bernstein split) has been a long time coming, with perhaps joe raglani’s finest batch of ‘choons in limbo for nigh on four years ...

... good thing johngit ‘er done elliott stepped out of the bullpen & contributed a positively radiation-oriented ooze of thick analogue slime (culminating into a pretty damn “gone” sect. of resonant pulse-out) allowing joe’s hard-forged (pre theft !!!) suite to finally see the light of day, proving him once & for all the worthy successor to the “outsiderelectronicpopmusic lineage that runs from his beloved nikpascalraicevic through folks like tom cameron & steve birchall (& even a bit of the ‘ol john bender) ...

gorgeous lp jacket (court. of jeremyghost icekannapell) hides a detail-oriented insert & the wax itself (a virgin, whisper-quiet affair) ; highly recommended !!!

raglani / outer space
split
lp (2010)

an incredible journey into the inner-space of analog synthesis. soothing, pleasant, hypnotic and manic are thoughts of the day. this cosmic oozing mess of layered sequencers as swirling syrupy frequencies come raining down. raglani serves up some sickly sweet synthy songs and outer space forge a thick gooey side long track of psychedelic electronic mind muck. john is in another band called emeralds.

guest appearance by c.spencer yeh on raglani's "heart of glass" adding a slice of nice on the violin. artwork and layout by jeremy kannapell.

edition of 500 copies in pro-press full color jackets and insert. for fans of early tangerine dream, kraftwerk & nik pascal.

no fun productions (usa) #nfp 35 cd

emeraldswhat happened” compact disc

  • alive in the sea of information (8:02)
  • damaged kids (15:01)
  • up in the air (4:02)
  • living room (16:43)
  • disappearing ink (13:32)
february 2009 release ; the long-awaited follow-up to emeraldsbreakthrough album “solar bridge” ...

the aforementioned disc was certainly the sleeper-hit of 2008 ; here the band regroup, seemingly unfazed by their sudden notoriety & offer up five new pieces ... notably, mark mcguire’s guitar playing is far more front-and-center than on previous outings (at least after the first few pieces) , and while the synth-arrays of john elliot & steve hauschildt do drone on, there’s more of an ebb & flow to their dovetailing patterns than any straight all-on stasis (plus there’s a bit of drone-singing involved, and that’s always nice) ...

in attempts to capture the slow-swell of this music, i’ve put up a longer-than-usual sound-sample (drink it in, folks) ... unquestionably, these guys are making some of the most pertinent contemporary music in and of the mms-friendly cosmos ... i’m a huge fan (their set @ no fun topped my favorite concerts of 2008), and this one just cements it ... highly recommended !!!

35 emeralds what happened cd

emeralds is at the forefront of a new american movement that continues the experimentation in analog electronics of the 60's and 70's while ignoring the formulaic and boring turn electronic music took in the later part of the 20th century. add a renewed energy gained from their connections to the noise movement, and you have some of the most original and true music of the new century.

'what happened' continues their exploration in tonal beauty of their recent work that brought to mind pioneers like tangerine dream and cluster, while presenting a new approach to structure that brings to mind masters like luc ferrari and opens our ears to a new universe full of astonishing possibilities. this is the true new american infinite electronic music of our present.

recorded by emeralds and mastered by james plotkin.

"house" is the 2nd official full-length offering by cleveland, ohio duo mist featuring sam goldberg (of radio people) and john elliott (emeralds, outer space, imaginary softwoods etc) after 2009's self-titled debut effort on amethyst sunset.

a suite consisting of 7 complex, layered compositions shows new progression in composition and melody from the duo. from the lightning fast, bittersweet crescendo of "twin lanes" to the dramatic chord progressions of "i can still hear your voice", "house" is a certain expansion in execution and construction. tracks like "p.m." put a new take on the long-form mist style with cryptic alien vocoder and humid pad sounds, while "mist house" and "dead occasion" reveal new, complex territories that will most certainly please fans of the previous mist recordings.

tusco/embassy (usa) #te60 lp

fragmentsorts of glass” long playing record

  • face down

  • perdurable cessate
july 2009 release ; first thing we’ve been able to grip from this ohioan duo, consisting of zach troxell and jefffield of hatshatfield (who’s also playing w/ big john elliot in outer space these days) ...

sensing a palpable steve birchall influence (at least in how the lines always seem to burble-out at the end) ; otherwise my language fails in describing the sort(s) of sputnik-lineage bleep-out the pair get up to here, occasionally landing on a nice drone-bed, but mostly launching passel after passel of deep-space telemetry out into the ether ... this comes closer to the late 70s / early 80s home-recorded electronics wave that just about anything i’ve heard recently ... if retro-futurism’s your thing ; bon appetit ...

  • front porch breeze
  • burning leaves
october 2009 release ; don’t let the title fool you (as it did me) ... mark doesn’t so much drop his version of the takoma sound here inasmuch as offer a solo variant on the echoplexed guitar styles that he uses when anchoring emeralds’ time-space drift (think “e2-e4” with a bit more in the way of modal development) ... only here fretted on what sounds like an ovation run through an arsenal of time-based effects & layers upon layers of overdubbed & multi-tracked parts ...

much more linear & melodic than emeralds ever gets, just a hair away from mid-period popol vuh in it’s tonality and/or approach ... nice stuff !!!

april 2010 release ; purportedly the final release from the colored mushroom & the medicine rocks ensemble (what a long, strange, hectic, at times frustrating, ultimately rewarding ... trip it’s been) consisting of emeraldsjohn eliott, charles szerzen, and sandra serio ...

the trio leave us in fine form, here offering 7 tracks of off-kilter drum machine wallop, endless odd-meter arpeggiations, some stray vocoder riffing, new age style zenith-ascension tactics, some glorpy synth-speak freak outs, and the like ... comes wrapped in a collage-heavy j-card, metallic red tapes ...

as good as a swan song gets these days ; sad to see these guys go !!!

colored mushroom and the medicine rocks - "at red frosting"

after being delayed multiple times along with mr mcguire’s "between family", this release finally sees the light. songs about confusing confusion being confusing. the ensemble moves forward with a malachite grid for the room to change all the bad stuff happening in the basement. nobody is being honest and so maybe the obsidian should be handled with much more care (i.e. put it away) than previously anticipated. no, not new age bullshit - im talking about the little pieces of information which we are handed to use as tools. thats not the point anyhow and besides that, the red frosting is a mystery and its a bad thing anyway, nobody wants to dwell on the bad stuff.

150 chrome red tapes w/double sided collage art.

weird forest press release...

mark mcguire tidings / amesthyst waves 2xlp

trying to put the last 15 years of music into context, you’d be hard pressed to get anyone to agree on a single thing. if anything, this period has been a collective convergence of all things cool-sounding: naïve experimentalism, academic composition, art-rock synthesis, electronic nihilism/flagellation, and, well, everything else. mark mcguire could muddy anyone’s interpretation of the contemporary canon with his buddies in the triadic mega-unit, emeralds, his collaborative outings in sun watcher and skyramps (with danieloneohtrix point neverlopatin), and his prolific, yet well-executed, solo work. ”have you heard his shredability, incomprehensible astral traveling and meditative neutron stasis on any of those solo jams, the dude must be ancient!?” truth is, mark mcguire is a youngin’, not a refugee of the 70s. nor is he mining unfamiliar territory; he produces something old and familiar, yet it sounds so fresh and necessary for today.

originally released as limited edition cassettes and masterfully cleaned up for this definitive release by james plotkin, tidings/amethyst waves finds mcguire packing 60+ minutes with trance-inducing, melodic guitar intricacies, an occasional wall-of-squall reminiscent of mizutani riding a thunder horse, and filaments of a drifting stratosphere where organic synthed-out solos are nestled in tight. with this release, mark mcguire has hatched a true american euro-vision utilizing major shifts in the ‘music as language’ paradigm. no joke, this is where wyld stallyns is heading in the year 2398 a.g. and tidings/amethyst waves is as essential as anything in the emeralds catalog.

package boasts photography by mark mcguire, with design by aaron winters.
