amazing births
"painted glacier" c20

new tape from mark mcguire (emeralds) and julian gulyas (synaptic foliage) ... pretty much the exact opposite of our first tape, "painted glacier" is a symmetrically aligned, super warm and very specific zone, stretched out and really taking it's time. synth and guitar standing on top of a mountain and melting down the sides. almost angelic sounding. side b picks up where the first one left off, gets into some "evening star" style loops and blissful, delicate waves of misty electronics. extra proud of this one.

mark mcguireoff in the distance” long playing record

july 2010 release ; ... i’ve been hearing for a few years now that this early solo set from emeraldsmark mcguire (originally released in september, 2008 by greh holger via his chondritic sound imprint ... which is to say that very few have actually heard it) was his recorded high-water mark, but i wasn’t prepared for the “awesome vistas” channeled herein, coming across as the flaxen-haired, second-removed cousin of amon düül’s “paradieswärts düül” and tangerine dream’s “risky business” score ...

gone (mostly) are the jammy, dead-like spider-tentrils of climbing note-solos, replaced with a far more textural, growling wall built from layers of s&h filters & octave-displaced whirr ... frankly, i’ve always thought that this area is where mark excels, so i’m psyched to have a full set of more laminar materials to cut the more “guitaristic” sides he’s been dropping as of late ...

if you’re a fan of the earlier emeralds sides (such as the quintana roo & tusco terror splits) & want to hear a guitar-isolated version of that particular drone-plateau ; this is your best bet ... highly recommended !!!

mark mcguire
"off in the distance" lp

after multiple unsuccessful attempts to pass on this massive task, i am now sitting down with the challenge of describing one of my all-time favorite albums. one that's left a pretty major mark on me and has many memories attached to it throughout the two or so years that this lp's been in the works. truly the perfect music for any particular mood. personally evoking memories of being carless and aimlessly walking everywhere during a bleak cleveland winter, sitting on an august roof and falling asleep, and more recently, mark and i's amazing swim hangs. music that holds a mirror to the listener and demands the bending of a mind.

endlessly shifting and reflecting, “off in the distance” can truly apply itself musically to any situation. and to me, that's the definition of a great album. this lp sounds amazing and “hits the spot” at any time, under any circumstances. “off in the distance” is a true testament to the brilliance currently seeping out of cleveland's smog-filled pores, and in fact, i'd boldly state that it's mark's best, most emotive material. one of mcguire's earlier releases, originally presented as a cassette on chondritic sound in 2008 and mastered for vinyl by james plotkin to emphasize and bring out every single nuance and stroke this colossal recording holds.

gorgeous sprays of vast, melancholic guitar build in the classic mcguire style. dense, angular drones weave in and out and pull your brain along with them. thunderous electronics crackle and warp over the lush, subtle melodies that are reverberating and bouncing off each other below. and when the clean guitar comes in on side a, nothing else matters. a perfect album. and really, what else could matter?

edition of 500.

may 2010 release ; after much speculation & fanpire mongering, emeralds here “arrive” with their thirdproper” album, released on peterpita rehberg’s editions mego ...

a few changes are afoot :: gone are the side-length slow burners, replaced here by a suite of remarkably succint pop numbers, taking the band’s trademark synth / guitar / synth attack into new realms ... also, notably, the production values are through the roof, capturing each stray oscillation and phantom guitar echo in amazing detail (not to mention the quality of the lp cut - yowza - d&m’s rachad becker outdoing even himself) ... all things lending to what is undoubtedly the band’s towering recorded achievement thusfar ; finely honed & poised for international superstardom (they’re set to tour japan with fenn’o’berg this summer) ...

lush gatefold double-lp with a gnarly fold-out 24” x 24 poster (like this ::

... you know, for the dorm-wall homasote ; beats yr swan song black-lighter any day of the week) ; highly recommended !!!

emeralds: does it look like i'm here? double gatefold vinyl
release date: 24.05.2010

emeralds are john elliott, steve hauschildt, and mark mcguire
recorded july - august 2009 and january - march 2010 in cleveland, ohio
mastered by james plotkin
vinyl cut at dubplates & mastering, berlin
art by emeralds
cover photo by jen gomez
layout by mike pollard and jen gomez

does it look like i’m here?’ is the third official album by emeralds (after "solar bridge" on hanson, and the self-titled lp on their own wagon and gneiss things imprints, as well as countless small edition tapes and cdrs on a host of labels) and once again it presents another radical new direction for this cleveland trio.

it sees the group moving from playing single oscillator analog synthesizers to really complex analog and analog/digital hybrid as well a great deal of guitar synthesizers, not to mention fine tuning their skills as brilliant tunesmiths. simply put, the results are outstanding.

comprising of a number of tracks from their recent  ultra limited 7” vinyl series on wagon, as well new compositions exclusive to this release. this fine selection of tunes surpass anything they have achieved in their 5 year career. perfect melodies intertwined with ripping sequences and a guitar sound that floats perfectly throughout. although most tracks cover new ground in that they follow a shortened ‘pop format’, more long form cuts such as the towering ‘genetic’ and the title track will give fans of their earlier work something to grab onto, or totally let themselves go depending on the state of mind.

having spent all their lives in the relative isolation of cleveland means their music has developed into a vital, stunning unique hybrid that may have not been able to blossom in more active urban centres.

does it look like i’m here?’ heralds a turning point for all those involved and is perfect vivid soundtrack to emerge out of the recent harsh grey winter. fresh, shiny and totally essential.

march 2010 release ; beautifully remastered cd of emeralds’ “self-titled” lp from 2009, about which ::

moreso than in their previous album-length releases is a focus of pulsing rhythms (as opposed to straight beat-less space) finally bringing them full circle with their kosmiche forefathers (i’m feeling a definite manuel göttsching influence here, but also early-mid period td) ... plus, the first track is a great red-herring of dissonant rising sound (would love a whole album / tape of this stuff !!!) which of course leads to two perfectly dark but entirely modal trancers, each with a great deal of brownian motion fueling the constant sense of forward-momentum throughout ... by the end of the side-lengthpassing away” you really start to feel like you’ve been taken on a voyage somewhere (no, not hoboken, somewhere nice, like malmo) ...

... comes in a digipack with a giant booklet full of context-free photos of light/water interference and assorted visual phenomenae, all perfectly apropos to the included sonics ... up there with “solar bridge” and “allegory of allergies” as one of the band’s finest recorded moments ; highly recommended !!!

emeralds - s/t - cd

cd version of of the self released/self-titled lp by cleveland's emeralds recorded aug-sept 2008.  proper follow up to their debut lp 'solar bridge',  'emeralds' takes the thick drone sound of that lp into an even more abstract and strange placevisual music that lifts the listener up and transports them through tubes of sound occasionally to be swept into the opposite direction by an unexpected entrance into another world entirely. an intense journey that drops you off in a place just beyond death.

field recording contributions from aaron dilloway. mastered for cd by james plotkin. contains a 16 page full color booklet featuring photo artwork by the band themselves.

click the play button to hear an excerpt of "magic"
june 2008 release ; here’s the album a whole bunch of us have been waiting for since this was announced this past spring - new music from ohioan synth / guitar trio emeralds ; prob. their first real mass-marketed album after a series of miniscule-editions for american tapes (always loved the title ; “bullshit boring drone band”), hanson, gods of tundra, and their own gneiss things & wagon imprints ...

the two pieces herein deliver on a bunch of levels ; thick swarms of buzzing sawtooth-waves build into huge swaths of sound, with tonalities reminiscent of the “berlin school,” albeit constructed of far more visceral components ... this isn’t your average stock-in-trade synth-droning ; there’s always a swell of activity bubbling under the surface of the tonal overlay, inspection on a micro-level yields all manner of sequenced/gated/pulse-oriented details that flutter in increasingly wide trajectories as the pieces progress ...

one of my albums of the year thusfar, hands down. don’t let the band’s emergence from the harsh-noise / no-fun scenes fool you ; this is as fine a summoning of the electronic ür-sound as you’re likely to come across these days - on par w/ the long-form explorations of eliane radigue, jean-claude eloy, foke rabe, roland kayn, et.al. it is, of course, highly recommended !!!
hanson press release...

emeralds solar bridge digipak cd

starting out in 2005 performing live sets using only television sets as sound sources, emeralds has grown in recent years into a monster of heavy improvised drone using analog synths and masterfully effected guitar. born out of the midwest scum-noise scene, these guys have taken the intense heaviness of their midwest brethren to a place that is entirely their own. they have replaced the creepy atmosphere and abrasive harsh noise of their peers w/ a very different though equally intense blast of cosmic drone power!

hanson records is proud to announce emeralds - solar bridge, the trio's first full-length album after numerous cassette and cd-r releases on such labels as american tapes, chondritic sound, and the bands own imprints wagon and gneiss things. the album opens with the side long "magic" where the band builds a quiet drone into an extreme thick sawblade of swirling noise as beautiful as it is menacing. the flip is yet another sidelong journey titled "the quaking mess", a track that stabs your brain with fluttering sparks of synthesized needles before relaxing you into a göttschingesque dream state while slowly bringing you back to earth with an electronic wave of molten rumble. fans of the smooth tones of 'new age of earth' era ash ra tempel and the buzzing thick drones of throbbing gristle's 'heathen earth' should take note, as emeralds may be their new source for electronic drugs.

cd pressed in 1000 digipak copies.

october 2009 release ; don’t let the title fool you (as it did me) ... mark doesn’t so much drop his version of the takoma sound here inasmuch as offer a solo variant on the echoplexed guitar styles that he uses when anchoring emeralds’ time-space drift (think “e2-e4” with a bit more in the way of modal development) ... only here fretted on what sounds like an ovation run through an arsenal of time-based effects & layers upon layers of overdubbed & multi-tracked parts ...

the trio leave us in fine form, here offering 7 tracks of off-kilter drum machine wallop, endless odd-meter arpeggiations, some stray vocoder riffing, new age style zenith-ascension tactics, some glorpy synth-speak freak outs, and the like ... comes wrapped in a collage-heavy j-card, metallic red tapes ...

as good as a swan song gets these days ; sad to see these guys go !!!

colored mushroom and the medicine rocks - "at red frosting"

after being delayed multiple times along with mr mcguire’s "between family", this release finally sees the light. songs about confusing confusion being confusing. the ensemble moves forward with a malachite grid for the room to change all the bad stuff happening in the basement. nobody is being honest and so maybe the obsidian should be handled with much more care (i.e. put it away) than previously anticipated. no, not new age bullshit - im talking about the little pieces of information which we are handed to use as tools. thats not the point anyhow and besides that, the red frosting is a mystery and its a bad thing anyway, nobody wants to dwell on the bad stuff.

weird forest press release...

mark mcguire tidings / amesthyst waves 2xlp

trying to put the last 15 years of music into context, you’d be hard pressed to get anyone to agree on a single thing. if anything, this period has been a collective convergence of all things cool-sounding: naïve experimentalism, academic composition, art-rock synthesis, electronic nihilism/flagellation, and, well, everything else. mark mcguire could muddy anyone’s interpretation of the contemporary canon with his buddies in the triadic mega-unit, emeralds, his collaborative outings in sun watcher and skyramps (with danieloneohtrix point neverlopatin), and his prolific, yet well-executed, solo work. ”have you heard his shredability, incomprehensible astral traveling and meditative neutron stasis on any of those solo jams, the dude must be ancient!?” truth is, mark mcguire is a youngin’, not a refugee of the 70s. nor is he mining unfamiliar territory; he produces something old and familiar, yet it sounds so fresh and necessary for today.

originally released as limited edition cassettes and masterfully cleaned up for this definitive release by james plotkin, tidings/amethyst waves finds mcguire packing 60+ minutes with trance-inducing, melodic guitar intricacies, an occasional wall-of-squall reminiscent of mizutani riding a thunder horse, and filaments of a drifting stratosphere where organic synthed-out solos are nestled in tight. with this release, mark mcguire has hatched a true american euro-vision utilizing major shifts in the ‘music as language’ paradigm. no joke, this is where wyld stallyns is heading in the year 2398 a.g. and tidings/amethyst waves is as essential as anything in the emeralds catalog.

package boasts photography by mark mcguire, with design by aaron winters.
