| i have some basic moral issues with “explotation” records (i.e. wesley willis, langley schools music project, etc...) and as such i wish to distance this particular record from the aforementioned as this is clearly on a higher plane; something that a wide range of sound-poetry/sound-art scholars should hear rather than sign off on at it’s premier mention...
removed from its context as a real/unreal “sermon” extolling the values of some sordid extreme/outsider belief-system, this, in my mind, passes as one of the most amazing & completely engrossing sets of avant-vocalism ever. after the cute intros decrying the evils of rock and roll music (sprinkling the names of figureheads... such as billy joel... liberally) this (d)evolves into a set of monotone/octave-harmonized call-and-response sessions between ministress elizabeth clare prophet, a male co-minister, and the congregation. for 25+ odd minutes at a time, scores of people engange in a vaguely poly/motor-rhythmic drone that, even if this is a hoax, is just so goddamm impressive sounding that is sort of doesn’t even really matter. after the first few minutes any meaning in the multi-syllabic iterations becomes so removed that all you end up hearing is the unison, belting out this endless stream of phoneme-patterns that have their roots in god-only-knows-what-exactly.
so, bearing all of that, i urge to give this a shot. if you’re into sounds such as those produced by yoko ono, joan labarbara, cathy berberian, hell... even people like anton bruhin, henri chopin, bernard heidsieck, and of course jack murdurian, dion mcgregor, etc... you’ll want to hear this. then you’ll want to play it for others ... |
