| | | no fun productions (usa) #nfp 46 lp ducktails / dracula lewis “split” long playing record - ducktails - screen scene
- dracula lewis - gone by dawn
| august 2010 release ; ok, i’m going to step away from the edge of my recent hate-abyss (re: the chill-house-beach-witch-wave-agogia) to remark (perhaps, hopefully, controversially) that i think that not only is the ducktails side of this particular lp the best thing that he’s done, but actually one of the best sides of any lp i’ve heard recently (so much so that i actually encoded it to FLAC.WAV or whatever and put it on my phone - right now the only audio on there - so that i could listen to it while driving around, nonstop, for the last couple of weeks) ...
it kinda nails the whole collective german-leaning zeitgeist (case in point ; matt spent some time in berlin some years back, oddly, as arnold dreyblatt’s assistant) of the last coupla years into one concise, ultra-lo-fi 4-track trench-gaze parallax that i honestly can’t find any kind of fault with it whatsoever ... builds up for 4 minutes & rides a long stretch of tarmac, autobahn style for the remainder ; totally deluxe & way removed from any/all recorded evidence of mondanile’s pop-chops laid down so far ...
drac.lewis’ construct is a fine side of casiometry, hanson-esque tape wobble & misted metals in it’s own right all the same ... but damn, that ducky side ; total bees knees, as least for tje lifer harmonia / cluster advocate ... i’m watching you matt ... |

| nfp-46 ducktails / dracula lewis split lp
there is a murder in the beach. ducktails arrives in his spaceship escalade to investigate the scene. dracula lewis is the principal suspect. they become best friends and decide to work on a split lp. when a vampire kills a body is never found. at the same time beautiful and terrifying cavern drone sounds from dracula lewis, psychedelic spiraling melodies and electronics beats from ducktails. both investigate the limits of the space time continuum. this is the new dawn of expansive music. ducktails is matthew mondanile (also a member of real state.) dracula lewis was born in transylvania but currently lives in the country side of italy, were the locals refer to him as 'a gypsy.'
limited to 500 copies. |
