| february 2011 release ; it’s been nigh on 4 years since tyler dropped a new hp cycle title, making this a huge cause célèbre around these parts ... responsible for classic jams by the likes of richard youngs, avarus, ceylon mange, lsd march, and others, the label has been crucial for documenting these disparate-yet-somehow-aesthetically-linked folks throughout the past decade ...
... the second wind undoubtedly came in the form of ed “dr. e'weerd yijji” yazijian’s second solo outing (following his 2005 / 2007 “six ways to avoid the evil eye” & a collab with dan “dredd foole” ireton from a few years later) ; it’s the rare conflux of contemporary “psych” tropes where each & every angle is done with rare insight, devotion, & abandon (as opposed to the various “hey i got an esraj as a gift from my step-mom for staying off the meth for 2 weeks ; here’s my album” home-burns flooding our tiny, tiny mailbox these days) ... in fact, even picking the bit to highlight in the sound-sample was a tough choice (while the album is perhaps anchored by the excellent raga-guitar modes, ultimately chose to single-out ed’s john cale / tony conrad esque violin-sawing, esp. the overdub-quartet piece) ...
... haven’t been this ... psyched (dear lord) about a ... psych record since willie lane’s “known quantity” and/or the various harappian night recordings sides (two artists that ed’s in good company w/) ; highly recommended !!! |

| artist: ed yazijian title: gansrud format: lp matrix#: hp 285
second solo full-length from ed yazijian, also known for his long running but sparsely documented collaborations with dredd foole, featuring eight disparate tracks recorded between 1996 and 2009. each side starts off with some slow burning guitar (accented by bowed contrabass and violin on side two) that reverberates with an ease past midnight vibe. the album then weaves through a personalized space featuring eastern percussion, mainlined/cosmic violin drones and intercepted radio transmissions from an unknown origin. the record concludes with a contemplative guitar which is enveloped in tape hiss that eases its way in before fading away.
the lp pressed in an edition of 350 copies and is presented in a full colour printed sleeve that is at one itself and with the spirits an opaque facsimile. |
