... figured the timing was right for a re-visiting of the recorded work of this short-lived (well, 6 years, in this climate, is actually fairly substantial) brooklyn quartet, featuring marcia bassett (prior in un, now in hototogisu and solo as zaïmph), mike bernstein & maya miller (now of religious knives), and chris gray (now in endless boogie) ...

in contrast to everyone’s contemporary work & the band’s follow-up “out of one, through one and to one”, these eight pieces have a much more clearly defined tonal center, perhaps lending a bit more in the way of pleasant listening overall ... i’d still call this & “a pebble in thousands of unmapped revolutions” as the two key recordings in the early 21st century drone-improv renaissance ...

at long last (and i really mean it - this has been 9 months since the dbl cd project started) and after numerous delays and manufacturing errors this dbl cd has seen the light of day! and it was worth the wait after i was finally able to hold one of these. this digital version contains the exact same tracks as the dbl lp (now out of print) and is a mini-replica of the gatefold lp version. this gatefold cd package came out real nice and even has an insert with it (like the vinyl version, too). edition of 1000 copies.

opening with a brooding nocturnal labyrinth, and ascending through a dark power-drone into sky-high ribbons of blasphemous feedback traceries, and the annihilating ghostly machine clank of part 4, like tgs old analog set up, running freeform and haunted in a hermetically sealed bunker.

recorded: the black chapel, leeds; cca, glasgow; holy trinity church, leeds, and brudenell social club, leeds in 2005.

full color deluxe artwork delineates the unusual arcana, and some new clues for the pictorially fetishistic. edition of 1000 copies.

the trip from the western part of the island to san juan is smooth and dramatic -- the trees melt away and a metropolitan bulb protrudes. right in the shadow of the bulb is santurce, where the cubo space is a jagged realm of concrete and hyper productive thought and action.

workbench and black quarter were lucky enough to be invited to play in the san juan noise fest and this is a partial document of the evening -- our live set on one side, and puerto rican noise mainstay cornucopia on the other.

a small slice of a magical evening in puerto rico.

shackamaxon began back in 2001 when members of double leopards, son of earth and magik markers united to record and create music together.

since that time, the ensemble has quietly unleashed their psychedelic drift through a handful of live performances and a self-released cdr.

their self-titled debut lp presents four pieces of restrained beauty that encapsulates the shackamaxon sound. the album begins with a side-long excursion where sparse organic textures become enveloped in cavernous layers of sound and perpetually fuzzed drones. it is a steady swell which builds to immense heights before fading into the expanse.

side two starts off with a brief introduction of fluttering tones, then diverges into an intricate passage of controlled feedback chatter and subtle reverberations. the album concludes with what sounds like a field recording from an alien rain forest, capturing strange creatures chirping and gurgling as the humidity drips from the canopy.

pressed in an edition of 650, with beautiful cover art by amy borezo.

leagues away/under the rest of the no fun roster (they’ve always the odd ducks out ...) this is much closer to the quiet-storm continuum of classic / contemporary psychedelic rock running from arthur lee’s love right on through royal trux et.al - this disc collects their o/p heavy tapes 12”, their “side” of the split tour cdr w/ airport war, ditto w/ woods, and a few otherwise unreleased tracks (two of which feature nnck’s dave nuss) ...

rk are one of my favorite acts going right now from any scene ; very glad to have this material all in one place (for easy reference / naysayer-swaying purposes) - highly recommended !!!

marcia bassett: voice, guitars, electronics

marcia bassett (double leopards, hototogisu) rears zaimph's vile head once again on la nuit electrique. a raspy, delicate instrumental passage begins like a crippled music box. elegant and soporose. blackened guitar and amplification apprise the rest. acrid feedback hangs in the air and vocal modulations clot inside dark rivers of current. the night electric.

arc series

the series began as an abstraction. utech records and max aguilera-hellweg had previously worked together on half makeshift aphotic leech in the fall of 2006. over the dark wisconsin winter of 2007 the label began to sketch out a brazen idea and a means for its realization. that idea was to produce a series of releases that would marry photography and sound in such a way as to tether a varied spectrum of music with a single visual concept. max was invited to participate and graciously accepted. the arc series would come to represent an alliance/arc borne among artists of disparate fields of study (music, photography, graphic design, lithography, woodworking and screen printing) and comprise the first entry in the label's fine art catalog provoking incursion into further long-term collaborations. each of the disks was hand assembled in an exclusive package and released in editions of five hundred every eight weeks. nine volumes were issued from april to december 2007.
