domenico sciajno: real time computer processing.
gert-jan prins: electronics, fm/am modulations.

recorded may 17th & 20th 2002 at steim studio, amsterdam.

"the d&b album" is the first re-drum & re-bass album from the electronic duo domenico sciajno and gert-jan prins. they are both wellknown in the world of experimental electronic music, and released cd's on erstwhile, fringes, and grob. on this album prins' analog shake-pulses and sweeps are directly plugged into sciajno's specific powerbook esthetics and vice versa. as a whole, the five pieces on this adventurous cd form a precision-combination of sharp computer energy, rocking selfmade electronics, and fluid music recombination-technics, creating a grinding-spatial-musical concept, which by times reminds of shine'o's & prinsjan's rhithmic and playtechnical backgrounds on drums and double bass

giuseppe ielasi and domenico sciajno are both prominent members of the italian electroacoustic improv scene, not only as musicians, but also as concert promoters and organizers.

ielasi started playing guitar in 1988, and began exploring the art of improvised music soon after. in 1998 he founded the well-respected fringes label, in order to document his own work as well as that of other artists. in addition to his work on fringes, he has recorded for such labels as leo and sonoris. earlier this year, he released a superb solo cd-r on a small greek label, absurd. he has performed live with taku sugimoto, jerome noetinger, dean roberts, thomas lehn, michel doneda and brandon labelle.

sciajno began his career as an acoustic bassist and composer, studying acoustic and electronic composition with gilius van bergeijk and double bass in the royal conservatory of den haag in holland. in 2000, he released a sublime solo bass disc on fringes entitled broken bridge. he has collaborated with such artists as alvin curran and joel ryan, and sat in briefly with mimeo when the all-star electronic orchestra performed in bologna this past may.

ielasi and sciajno met in 1997, while searching for similarly minded musicians with which to collaborate. they began working in trio with ruggero radaele, later expanding to an acoustic quartet with christian alati, as documented on their leo lab release. over the last few years, ielasi and sciajno have each moved separately towards a vocabulary of pure electronics. in july of 2001, ielasi and sciajno met in palermo for a few days of intensive working and recording, the results of which are documented here.

right after compiles a series of perfectly crafted miniatures, featuring jagged shards of melody, slowly advancing crackles rippling with latent energy, and impeccably integrated techniques. the dazzling packaging was entirely created by nyc designer friederike paetzold.

sciajno, domenico (say "shah-eeno") comes from an ancient sicilian jewish family closely related to the kabbalists and mystics of the 13-14th centuries. when these mystics decreed electronic music unfit for jews, the sciajnos said "to hell with that" and converted to christianity - enabling them to continue their work in live electronics. in a word, domenico is carrying on a very ancient family tradition. he and i met by pure chance at an international conference of sound smugglers organized by the palermo "cupola", held annually in a remote seaside hotel outside of the hague in the netherlands. at the time, he was a contrabassista.....whose job was to look out for the cops, when the others went into action - stealing sounds from ports, train stations, markets, landscapes, banks and even people. this is as close to the truth, as the avantgarde is to the marx brothers. our real meeting at the royale konseravtorium of the hague, where he was an excellent student, was the beginning of a long friendship and many fruitful collaborations, among them: a giant sound installation in the magnificent baroque park of donaueschingen 1999; performances in" brute beat brut bruit" with the alter ego ensemble and frankie hi nrg; as founding member of the alvin curran filharmonia; a collaborative sound and video work sinking piano of a floating and slowly sinking piano- for the taktlos festival 2002 and numerous sound designs for my radio works like un altro ferragosto, and wolfings-- after a duo performance at the university in florence (2001) we realized as improvisers that our musical sensibilities were in absolute alignment. domenico is wild fennel.. without which half the wonderful dishes in the sicilian cuisine could not exist - totally unpredictable but never late, he approaches everything with a master's imagination, and outside of women, there seems to be no artistic or technical problem he cannot solve.. it was natural that we should make a cd of duo projects, and went about recording a few sets just one year ago in my studio near genzano di roma. the best of those sessions are included here as well as two other works- one based on my piano improvisations (here brilliantly processed by dome) to sound like it was played on an ancient piano about 5 kilometers from the microphone. the other "rue de la gare" was a pure sound collaboration we made in an attempt to win a prize. we did not win, but like everyone else, felt that we should have. most of the electronics is derived from my extensive sample archive and keyboard performance style - much passing through max/msp patches of dome's and ali momemi's. like my own story, un-necessary to tell here, the rest is fiction. alvin curran

compilation of variations on themes of preserving/capturing/processing “subliminal” environmental sound... we’re not talking about yr average acoustic ecology exercise here but more the hidden nature sounds in city-locations otherwise rife with the sounds of commerce, transportation, etc... the clarion call of watson’s opening piece (a bird squawks away in defiance as a boeing fades from the background to the fore in the right channel, takes off, then disappears in the left, seemingly having no affect on our fine feathered friend whatsoever...)

includes contributions from heavies chris watson and brandon labelle alongside excellent work from m.rösner, domenico sciajno, aaron ximm and others. a veritable phonographer’s delight...
room40 press release...
for most of us, our every waking moment (and even those where we are unconscious) is surrounded by sound. from the obnoxiously pitched alarm tone that raises us from slumber to the muted sounds of night-time traffic that merge with natural nocturnal transmissions; there is always sound.

as a society we have increasingly sought to augment and indeed control the environments around us. all manner of tools have been utilised in this ongoing war against the unfamiliar, the unexpected and the "undesirable". as well as a variety of visuals cues, sound is progressively used to colour our surroundings with a variety of aural hues.

the twentieth century brought with it an unparalleled use of artificial sound in the form of george squier's muzak - a creation designed to enhance (and perhaps determine) amongst other things our "urban/social/shopping" experience. for decades, no mall or place of substantial commerce was complete without the dulcet tones of muzak. to many it would seem that there is a world of difference between the bleating high frequency sounds of an indian marketplace and multiple channels of mid-tempo instrumental music filling our shopping malls; however the ability for sound to draw and focus our attention is universal and well documented.

but what of the remaining sounds? the incidental sounds that muzak tries (and often fails) to mask. it's within these sound fields that curators lawrence english + lloyd barrett sought to collect artists who were working with and celebrating these incidental aspects of our sound world.
