antiopic (usa) #an 004 cd

dion workmanching” compact disc

  • ching (20:37)
click the play button to hear an excerpt of "ching"
detailed short-format epic from sigma label-head dion workman, released as a 3”cd molded into a 5” cd shell (ala the raster “20 to 2000” series.)

not too long ago (during the 2004 intransitive festival) i sat in a large pitch-black theater as dion slowly unfolded a variant of this piece, building it into a blast-furnace of all-frequency noise over the course on an hour. the slow-sweep odd-harmonic noise arc that makes up the first half of the recorded version here followed by gated mid-hi sine wave grit that closes it out sound no less impressive here at home with the lights on, played back at a comfortable volume. it will take a bit of patience to get into this, but you’ll be very glad you took the journey once its effects have settled in...
antiopic press release...
dion workman (of sigma editions) produces a confounding piece—terrifyingly intrusive yet completely subtle, deep with texture and layer although monochromatic in character. ching is a complex work of grey shadows and glaring light, an exemplar of aggressive digital minimalism. its harsh textures coexist with the open-ended pulsation of extended tones and overtones, playing with the listener's tolerance. what sets ching apart from simple noise is workman's attention to minute detail, as well as the piece's mesmerizing structure. this short (20 minutes 37 seconds) and exhilarating work builds with calculated motion, suddenly bursting into silence, only to reconfigure itself, similar but different, in a quiet dance of amassing sonic shards.

ching was awarded the max brand prize on april 26, 2003 by the austrian cultural forum in new york city.

thela
thela
cat: cd#53

debut of guitar-based new zealand trio of internal-hum and hypnotic clang. thela was a young trio of dean roberts (guitar), dion workman (guitar, bass) & paul douglas (drums, piano); this was their first full length release following some unobtainable local releases.

thela's sound falls somewhere in between the alien tongue first spoken by the likes of intense art-rockers this heat and the organically thrilling sound waves of prime-era dead c.

guitarist dean roberts also recorded under the name the white winged moth. new zealand's transcendental legacy sound.

julien ottavi / dion workmanmisenlian” compact disc

  • misenlian (55:01)
superb minimal electro-acoustic sound-drift from these two sigma-affiliated composer/performers. dion’s set at the 2004 intransitive festival was a feat of sensory deprivation / overload (he played in complete darkness; it was incredibly loud; alpha states were reached.) his work here, in tandem with julien ottavi, has the same effect at any volume/light-level ...
erstwhile press release...
julien ottavi / dion workman - gnu/linux operating systems and free audio software.

julien ottavi and dion workman are two of the most extreme of the younger wave of sonic explorers, pushing the boundaries of sound and art. ottavi hails from nantes, france and workman from new zealand, but their overlapping concerns and aesthetics have drawn them together, and misenlian contains the results of their initial collaborations.

julien ottavi studied sound and photography at the art school of nantes. he is a founding member of formanex, an electroacoustic quartet performing graphic scores from the 20th and 21st centuries, including works by cardew, cage, wolff, feldman, brown, and ralf wehowsky, as well as the founder of the nantes-based experimental music organization apo33 (responsible for running the label fibrr among numerous other activities). his most notable previous release is the superb solo cd nervure magnétique (sigma editions, 2003).

dion workman began his career in the improvised rock trio thela, along with dean roberts and rosy parlane. after thela split up, workman and parlane founded sigma editions in 1998, beginning an exploration of electronic music that has continued to this day. workman is a meticulous composer, with a feldman-like sense of development in his pieces, best represented on disc by the perfectly sculpted ching (antiopic, 2003), a work which won him the 2003 max brand prize from the austrian cultural forum.

workman was introduced to ottavi's work in 2001 by parlane, who suggested that ottavi record for sigma editions after seeing him play in london. later, workman invited ottavi to play a series of us shows, where they performed solo sets on the same bill and grew to be good friends. after being invited to record as a duo for erstwhile, ottavi came to the us for a month in 2003 and the two performed and recorded constantly. based in workman's brooklyn apartment, the duo literally improvised for days at a time - when they slept, the computers continued to generate sound, with changes in the puredata patches triggered by microphones placed outside the apartment - and intermittently recorded the results. ottavi and workman directly followed up this intense recording period with several long-duration live performances, each set lasting between 3 and 6 1/2 hours. by the end of ottavi's stay in the us, the duo had amassed approximately fifty hours of recorded material, which they later selected and shaped into misenlian.

misenlian unites workman's glacial, continuous pacing with ottavi's love for challenging the limits of dynamic range, resulting in a single remarkable piece as jarring and unsettling in its own way as the fluorescent colors of the cd packaging.

formed 01: mattin / dion workman - s3

dion workman

dion workman, a native of new zealand now based in new york, is a composer and improviser of experimental computer music. for over a decade workman has been articulating a unique sonic vision exploring the extreme edges of musicality, "sound art" and the audible world.

workman performs regularly throughout north america, europe, new zealand and australia and his many solo and collaborative recordings have received critical acclaim. in 2003 workman was awarded the max brand prize for innovation in electronic and electro-acoustic music by the austrian cultural forum for his composition 'ching' (antiopic, 2003).

in 2004 workman founded tmp a research collective of sound artists and theorists investigating the relationship between sound and psycho-geography. tmp research projects involve the manipulation of sound in public spaces and the creation of vastly spatialized sonic pieces where "composition" becomes the act of moving through space.

mattin

mattin uses computer (& guitar) feedback to accentuate the proccesual and instant character of the improvisation performance. feedback is self generated and self sufficient.much of mattin's exploration in sound is rooted in contrast. the contrast of extreme high and low volumes, and between the digital and physical sound of the computer (exposing the monopoly of detached amplification in sound delivery).

one of the two releases (the other was the fennesz/parlane collab 3”disc that’s now sadly o/p) that kicked off the synaesthesia label... a sometimes-subdivision of mego run out of the shop of the same name by a riotous young fellow named mark harwood.

heaps of exclusive material from philip samartzis, oren ambarchi, dion workman, rosy parlane, etc...
synaesthesia press release...
where this compilation succeeds is in it's ability to encompass the wide variety and all round high quality of the pacific rim's damaged and exploratory audio activities. however, in a single volume this compilation lays forth an initial reading of such activities, a chart to navigate the various creative threads unfolding throughout the region if you will.

stylistically the 60+ mins represented here runs the gamut from the hendrix meets ina-grm collision of candlesnuffer, "head in a television" static of philip samartzis, narrative driven kung-fu electroacoustics from delire, skittering schizophrenia of auigiugui, unusual vocal excursions of cray, gentle abstract beauty courtesy of matthew thomas, some subtle yet unnerving sonics of darrin verghagen and netochka nezvanova and some truly stunning alien frequencies unearthed via dion workman's mini disc feedback set up. along with numerous other inventive approaches strewth takes a cut-section of this disparate scene, presenting a broad range of challenging music packaged in standard jewel case with 12 page informative full colour booklet.
