not to date myself, or david kristian for that matter, but i remember the first few 12” releases he did on his own discreet/indiscreet imprint from those halcyon days of the late 90s, when the drill n’ bass output of the spymania and bovinyl labels sent shockwaves around the world, resulting in themic experimentation by folks like mr. kristian here.

of course since then kristian has redefined himself as a masterful electro-acoustic composer, releasing many purely analogian affairs on alien8, mostly named after bits of ems gear (cricklewood was the name of the little keyboard that went with the synthi). here, kristian is in fact wearing his gear-list on his sleeve, but the approach is entirely different... instead of using top-notch era synthesizers, he limits himself to only the lowliest of units on the synth totem-pole, casio’s vl-tone (think trio’s “da doo da da” and you’re there) and a few electro-harmonix and mxr/line6 hardware effects. the result is a single 68-minute loop-based study in gradual tonal shift... surely as deep as the title implies. very cool stuff...

the mariana trench is located in the pacific ocean, just east of the 14 mariana islands near japan. it is the deepest part of the earth's oceans, and the deepest location of the earth itself. it was created by ocean-to-ocean subduction, a phenomena in which a plate topped by oceanic crust is forced below another plate topped by oceanic crust.

the mariana trench cd was put together from two very long loop improvisations recorded during snow storms. the equipment used was relatively simple; a toy synthesizer and many classic guitar pedals operated with great care (the calm of the snow storms made that possible). the results were then mixed and processed through more sophisticated effects in order to give the listener the impression that the whole recording had taken place thousands of fathoms deep.

let there be no interruption in your descent, as you experience david kristian's deep and challenging mariana trench. markers have been provided for you to use as reference points in the event that you start getting the bends during the album's 68 minute running time. headphones and any other audio diving gears are highly recommended.

to publicize the audio collection accumulated by ohm editions between 1993 and 1998, avatar asked eight composers to extract, transform and remix bits and entire pieces whatever way they wanted.

the result is obviously one of very different approaches and varied listening experiences. through ohmix, avatar, as the name of the centre indicates, metamorphoses, changes itself and rematerializes with new pieces. from ralf wehowsky to alexandre st-onge, each reading is a taking-aim, an angle of attack, a posture that comes across like a meeting, a rendezvous of sound. the interweavings are amplified sharings, interpretations enriched by the fine-tuning of each sound sensibility.

ohmix is a weaving of related but dispersed trends. for several years, a number of artists have been creating a new genre by using the sounds of other artists for their own creations and fishing from assorted discs to reconstruct them into a music that is unprecedented. ohmix sees itself as contributing to the history of avatar and of ohm editions.

ohmix was broadcast in november 2001 on the french-language radio service of the cbc, la chaîne culturelle, on le navire night, a program produced by hélène prévost.
