october 2011 release ; ... an odd, entirely plunderphonic affair from one ensemble & volcano the bear’s daniel padden, transforming loops & bits of ethnic recordings into ... loops of ethnic recordings (with no documentation as to what we’re actually listening to ... and in fact a flat denial of any kind of trace-back in the record’s liner notes) ...

daniel padden
ship chop
lp

ship chop is a celebratory cut-up of far-flung musics. edited, collaged and re-arranged by daniel padden from original vinyl sources to create impossible collaborations between musical ghosts.

it is both reverential and sacrilegious, giving the music its full praise whilst also subjecting it to playful subversion. some of the editing is obvious and transparent, but some of it much less so, where sounds from different recordings and continents overlap into an unlikely whole.

daniel padden is a member of the one ensemble and volcano the bear, and also creates music for theatre and film.

october 2008 release ; excellent solo set from volcano the bear / one ensemble’s daniel padden ...

fawned over his ultra eczema lp from a few years back (sadly, o/p) ; this picks up where that one left off w/ a blend of rural folk idioms, string drones, & fractured tape/splice (listen to the sound-sample) & fidelity experiments ... highly recommended !!!

[026] daniel padden "pause for the jet" lp

since 1995 daniel padden has been a member of volcano the bear, with several highly regarded album releases on nurse with wound's united diaries label, textile and beta-lactam ring records. after his move to glasgow he started the one ensemble of daniel padden as an outlet for his solo recordings with releases on catsup plate, secret eye and textile. when the one ensemble slowly metamorphosed into a band of its own, padden started to record his solo output under his birth name, with last year's "the isaac storm" on the ultra exzema label being the first seminal result.

over the years padden has developed a strong fascination for obscure musics from all over the world (re his recent "epiphanies" article for the wire magazine): mouth organ love-songs from thailand, the ramayana monkey chant from bali, khene pieces from laos; so-called world music from burundi to bulgaria.

combining these interests with his love for british folk and art rock (this heat, robert wyatt), kraut rock (faust), free jazz, the surreal collage techniques of nurse with wound and the odd humour of the residents, he has developed a totally unique and highly personal musical vision without ever sounding overambitious or directionless. gorgeous song-writing is seamlessly transformed into pure fuzz or string drones, suddenly interrupted by some improvised reeds or collapsing percussion, all within the blink of an eye, and never losing its natural flow, "pause for the jet" is already an auspicious aspirant for our "record of the year".

  • the vapour (6:39)
  • the instructions (4:11)
  • the sun (3:49)

  • the words (3:37)
february 2009 release ; first release from this new “orchestral” configuration of daniel padden’s one ensemble ...

the range on display here is much wider than the typical gypsy / folk-aligned forms on prior one ensemble output ; the beefed-up instrumentation lends an almost dmitri tiomkin-ian flair (listen to the sound-sample) with the massed choir & strings resonating strongly with each other as the band runs through takes ranging from minimal, gestural improv(s) to full-band drones and lurching, sea-shanty lineage ditties ... awesome.

the one ensemble orchestra – ‘other thunders’ cd

daniel padden’s the one ensemble began as a solo project and quickly morphed into a quartet with the recruitment of chris hladowski and aby vulliamy of nalle, and peter nicholson. with padden’s leadership, they developed a curious and strident brew of eastern european folk, chamber music and some kind of earthy psychedelic primitivism. their approach is given the blaze of full technicolour glory as they expand to a septet, exacerbating their collision of the formal and the tribal and oftentimes recalling the soundtrack and mood of jodorowsky's the holy mountain.

textile press release...
the george burt / raymond mc donald quartet - "one bloke"

the collaboration of george burt and raymond mc donald with lol coxhill has produced 5 cds, each one having a different approach. for this cd the duo wanted to add bill wells and daniel padden to the mix not least because they are their friends with whom they have collaborated many times, but also because they felt their approach, at times improvisatory, but with a strong melodic focus, would be very compatible with their own way of working with lol. of course lol has a huge and richly deserved reputation as a unique free improviser with an innate, organic and never-ending sense of melodic inventiveness.

the duo enjoyed working with textile on their highly acclaimed cd hotel dilettante (which included lol coxhill, future pilot aka, the writter douglas coupland and the contemporary artist martin boyce) so they had their eye on this recording being released on textile too. as bill and daniel are already textile stalwarts, the duo felt this was another good reason for inviting us along to take part.

the legendary soprano saxophone player steve lacy died the week before the recording session. as lol was a friend and collaborator of steve, g burt and r. mc donald wanted to mark the occasion. the title-track of this cd, written specially for this session, recalls a trio cd called 3 blokes, which steve and lol recorded together with evan parker in germany .

january 2010 release ; lovely set of music from daniel padden’s one ensemble, here collaborating with kinetic sculptor / sound-artist sarah kenchington on this full-length score for the titular matt hulse film (padden & hulse had previously collaborated on hulse’s 2004 short “half life”) ...

present is everything we’ve loved about the ensemble thusfar ; the vaguely sea-shanty / gypsy-themed instrumentation (accordion, violin, brass) but also some fine free-percussion & kenchington’s jean tinguely-lineage constructs (which are given their own “spotlights” here & there ; one of the later pieces reminds me of akio suzuki’s analapos) ...

while this music undoubtedly adds loads of “mood” to the film (which, apropos, is apparently about a deaf long-distance cyclist), it also works very nicely as a recorded album, ranking amongst the ensemble’s finest ... self-pressed disc from this new padden / hulse enterprise, unlikely to be available from the normal channels (which is where we come in) ...
unshaped led press release...

the one ensemble & sarah kenchington 'dummy jim

'dummy jim' is based on the story of james duthie, a profoundly deaf man from the north-east of scotland who, in 1951, cycled a solo trip over 3000 miles to the arctic circle and back. he wrote a journal 'i cycled into the arctic circle' which was the starting point for matt hulse's film. the music on this album will form the basis of the film soundtrack

if you're unfamiliar with sarah kenchington, she makes remarkable mechanical musical instruments, and i recently made an album with her 'the bellow switch' (on luke fowler's shadazz label).

 best of 2007 !!!

  • ben reynolds - golden arm (3:38)
  • directing hand - down in yon forest (6:10)
  • mcwatt - untitled (7:00)
late 2006 release; the first on singing knives; a young u.k. imprint focusing on subterranean music activities from (mainly) the leeds & glasgow scenes...

standout tracks from tirath singh nirmala (awesome, gained, eastern-tinged voice/violin monolithery - really loving this stuff !!!), the michael (mick) flower band (driving, angus maclise-like tribal thud & tanpura/organ tranceout) alex neilson’s directing hand (big, thumping toms, buzz, & loner vocals), vibracathedral orchestra’s bridget hayden (scraping hurdy-gurdy overdubs), & chora (almost psf-sounding in-the-red psych-haze...)

a very nice set featuring a wise range of sound/styles from quiet, bedroom folk to full on harsh instrumental noise; an admirably effective survey of contemporary psychedelia from “up north ...”
