daniel menche and kk null - raijin

asp 2035
release date: october 24, 2006

raijin, five untitled tracks constructed by noise artists daniel menche and kk null, hit like a violent storm in this electrically charged collaboration by two masters of dense sound sculpture. like raijin and fujin, shinto gods of thunder and lightning, menche and null command attention with the ability to create a powerful sensory presence. their treatment of drum, voice, trumpet and electronics roars and tumbles through these collating waves of noise and electro-acoustic ambience. menche’s thunderous drums resonate like a shockwave as null’s lightning sheds light upon those seeking shelter on land.

each armed with a penchant for sonic destruction and a massive discography, menche’s concussions pound between null’s electronic noise terror. these five unnamed and unstable atmospheres manifest absolute pure thunder!

kevin drumm / daniel menchegauntlet” compact disc

  • gauntlet (28:47)
long-awaited new material from kevin drumm, a single piece jointly composed with prolific northwest noise/tribal-percussion producer daniel menche...

gauntlet” starts off with a lone bit of post-hardcore guitar riffing, then builds slowly via concurrent layers of drum-kit/cymbal splash & further direct-pedal guitar tones... before of course heating up into an impressive shitstorm of hundreds of layers of said ingredients, laying out halfway through into a gorgeous void of subterranean electronics & variable-tempo gating, finally conking out into a few minute of kevin’s trademark doepfer comparator/slew chop...

this is miles away from each composer’s solo work... closer to the sound of a coupla 80s sst records being fed simultaneously through some sort of sentient auto-composition framework... some of the direct-to-4-track-mic-input guitar tones remind me of spanish black metal, but otherwise this is on its own path entirely. nothing short of totally impressive, and due to the short-sharp-shock of it; something that doesn’t overstay its welcome. highly recommended.

kevin drumm & daniel menche: gauntlet cd

release date: 24.07.2007

kevin drumm: guitar and noise
daniel menche: organ and noise

recorded fall of 2006 in chicago at uggae’s porta-toilet studio. mixed and mastered at stereophonic mastering in portland, oregon.

one organ, one guitar, several fuzz boxes and two highly regarded purveyors of american extreme sonics are the savoury ingredients that created gauntlet. building on menche’s aural low end physicality and drumm’s exacting attention to high frequency detail - the aptly titled ‘gauntlet’ is sizzling, scorching slab of essential audio. heavy in iron and protein. a lean cut indeed, no fat included.

ground fault (usa) #gf 019 cd

daniel mencheface of vehemence” compact disc

  • ..........22'38"
  • ...........14'32"
  • ..........14'16"
  • ...........16'02"
i’ve long had mixed feelings about the ground-fault label... one one hand they’ve been integral in documenting the work of scores of challenging sound-artist and noise producers... on the other they “cut corners” by presenting each release in a generic color-stamped moon-rock design that, to me, signifies a certain “experimental music :: it’s all interchangeable!” attitude (which i know, logically, isn’t the case... but still...). they do have a great pricing scheme, which allows the unititiated a chance to... chance on some otherwise unknown auteurs’ craft w/out interrupting the wallet-butterfly nesting procedure...

all that aside, here’s an earlier menche disc... i’ve slowly been discovering the work of this portland-area composer over the last 6 months and i must say i’m impressed. here’s further proof...
ground fault press release...
“it's very difficult to explain or interpret what my music conveys – so that's why i work hard so that the music can speak for itself - no matter how vague the message or imagery - the energy of what it's communicating is what remains most evident.” - daniel menche

“daniel menche's music is meant to express the undisciplined purity of emotion. characterized by forcefulness of sound, this is music that strives for one goal: vehement beauty.”

“my influence and inspiration for "the face of vehemence" is the book "sun and steel" by yukio mishma. the cd title "face of vehemence" is basically what i see in yukio mishimas face; especially on the book cover. almost all of his photos he has that "face of vehemence". when i finally read his book "sun and steel" it was like a "take the words out outa my mouth" experience but articulated absolutly perfectly in a manner i could never do with words. how he percieved "words" in relating to the flesh is how i percieve "sound" in relating to the flesh. yukio mishmas attitude towards art/flesh/death/spirit is highly inspiring towards my music.” - daniel menche

daniel menche - glass forest - cd
imprec176 - cd

glass forest is a highly listenable starting point for any newcomers curious about daniel menche's vast discography. it is also, according to menche, the last cd he will release. from now on he'll be releasing his music on lp only or on dvd to accompany films he's been working on. glass forest is also the companion release to body melt which is being released simultaneously on important on lp only.

recorded in the winter of 2005, daniel menche’s glass forest displays a glistening sound world that finely textured with the most delicate of raw organic sound and chaotic electronic noise. not at all extreme as with menche’s previous work but rather a more subtle presence can be heard here on glass forest. subsonic bass drums crawling underneath a massive sheets of glass-like sound layering infinitely into a thick and dense forest of delicate noise. for fans of daniel menche's ambient work and also his loud violent work, glass forest fits exactly right in the middle of these two polarities.

daniel menche: hammond organs, native american drums

body melt is limited to 500 copies only. this is the companion release to the glass forest cd being released on important simultaneously. both releases are housed in staggeringly unique artwork by emily hyde.

recorded in the summer of 2007, body melt is a molting and simmering display of furious hammond organs & native american drums. daniel menche manages to merge together the powerfully fuzzed out organ drones along with hypnotically crushing and frenzied drums in a manor that is distinctly the graceful music style of daniel menche.

call it trance music for carnivores or ambient music for cannibals.
body melt sits perfectly throned on this limited vinyl lp release.

southern lord (usa) #sunn 100 cd

sunn o)))monoliths & dimensions” compact disc

  • aghartha (17:34)
  • big church [megszentségteleníthetetlenségeskedéseitekért] (09:43)
  • hunting & gathering (cydonia) (10:02)
  • alice (16:21)
may 2009 release ; impressive outing from an “orchestral” lineup of sunn o))), with regulars stephen o’malley, greg anderson, oren ambarchi, and attila csihar aided by a who’s who of contemporary sound, including deep listening band founder stuart dempster (!?), trombonist julian priester, steve moore, eyvind kang, dylan carlson, cuong vu, daniel menche, joe preston, rex ritter, and dozens more ...

the opener “aghartha” immediately places us in familiar territory as unison slo-mo riff-walls blast us for a good 5 minutes ... but then ensemble begins to rear it’s head ; at first all penderecki-like, then coalescing into a woozy conch-shell pattern under attila’s recitation(s) ... “big church” is a straight-up choral piece, with said buzzsaw guitars offering a rattling foundation under the angelic proceedings ... “hunting & gathering” reminds me of “grimmrobe” era sunn o))), albeit with a nice layering of analogue synths ... and finally “alice” ; were it not for the southern lord catalogue number, i could easily take the striated brass writing & penultimate drone-doom core for something out of the xi / pogus catalogue(s) ...

love that these guys, after a pretty lengthy break there, didn’t just drop “black 2” on us, but instead something much closer to the heart of the matter here @ mms ... beautifully captured long-form sound, taking cues from the 70s/80s west-coast minimalism & modern composition wave & site-specific explorations ... highly recommended !!!
southern lord press release...

sunn o)))
monoliths & dimensions

sunn o))) is proud to present their 7th studio album, after 10 years of existence, entitled monoliths & dimensions. the album showcases the core guitar duo - stephen o’malley and greg anderson - incorporating influences from a plethora of guest musicians, bringing the sunn o))) sound to epic new levels. the band also collaborated with composer eyvind kang (notable for his work with john zorn, marc ribot, bill frisell, etc.) on various acoustic ensembles, in addition to the helios fueled electric guitars and basses. key players on the album include australian guitar genius oren ambarchi, enigmatic hungarian vocalist attila csihar (mayhem, tormentor, etc.) and slow music godfather dylan carlson (earth), as well as julian priester (worked with sun ra in the 50s, john coltrane’s african brass band, and herbie hancock’s sextant band) and new-music horn player stuart dempster. there's also an upright bass trio, french & english horns, harp & flute duo, piano, brass, reed & strings ensembles, and a viennese woman's choir led by persian vocal savant jessika kenney.

the album is not "sunn o))) with strings" or "metal meets orchestra" material. the band took an approach concentrating on more of allusion toward the timbre of feedback and the instruments involved, so the piece is really illusory, beautiful and not entirely linear, stating that the end product is "the most musical piece we’ve done, and also the heaviest, powerful and most abstract set of chords we've laid to tape" the album was recorded and mixed by randall dunn & mell dettmer at various points over the last 2 years. as can be expected the packaging for this album is beautiful and appropriately compliments the audio content. jewel case is sheathed by a velum o-card. expansive 24 page booklet with velum cover and specially coated heavy-weight paper. truly a site to behold!

monoliths & dimensions is practice in density, gravity and momentum.

maximum volume yields maximum results.

new series framework

an extension of our concrete electronics noise, a brand new mix-up of unusual conceptions of sound material by young unknown composers, well known not-so-young composers and old but clever composers.

daniel menche has established himself as a musician with a sense of focus and determination uncharacteristic in a genre known for its randomness and chaotic structure.

rather than creating 'noise,' he strives for order and cohesiveness. his presentation of sonic structures is similar to the way a writer depicts a story, an allegory seems to arise, which uses confusion as a symbol for the imaginative process of total sound purity; aural intensity is not a representation of confusion or the chaotic, but a concerted effort to provoke and stimulate the listeners imagination by generating intensely powerful sounds and music.

daniel menche's work originates from the idea that there is no restriction to the potential sound sources and especially sonic energy. any sounds -all sounds are used and exploited to create the music. there are absolutely no barriers or biases in what can be used and have been used. self made and recorded sound sources, percussion and instruments are the main emphasis in creating a living and emotional feeling to daniel menche's form of contemporary music. subtle and patient compositions rely on long, dense layers of droning sounds, while abrasive pieces rely on sounds amplified and processed to extreme levels, pushing the full spectrum of frequencies to the most threshold of limits.

menche has amassed a sizable discography on some the most discerning independent labels in the world. constantly performing live extensively throughout north america, europe and japan with performances that are intense and powerful. characterized as both extremely loud and patiently subtle, daniel menche's live performances define its own sonic presence, an entity that gives form to an emotional rawness with highly textural and dominating sounds.

characterized by forcefulness of sound, music that strives for one goal: vehement beauty.

crystalline drones and sacred incantation. nectar procured from golden fruit. shimmering resonance channeled through dream. a most anticipated return to form for menche. breathtaking purity of sound. wolf's milk is a triumph of immense magnitude.

arc series

the series began as an abstraction. utech records and max aguilera-hellweg had previously worked together on half makeshift aphotic leech in the fall of 2006. over the dark wisconsin winter of 2007 the label began to sketch out a brazen idea and a means for its realization. that idea was to produce a series of releases that would marry photography and sound in such a way as to tether a varied spectrum of music with a single visual concept. max was invited to participate and graciously accepted. the arc series would come to represent an alliance/arc borne among artists of disparate fields of study (music, photography, graphic design, lithography, woodworking and screen printing) and comprise the first entry in the label's fine art catalog provoking incursion into further long-term collaborations. each of the disks was hand assembled in an exclusive package and released in editions of five hundred every eight weeks. nine volumes were issued from april to december 2007.

various artists : idioscapes 2007
digipack / 1000 copies

“the idea was to ask some of our favourite sound artists to take part in a compilation... and, to our surprise, they accepted. the only concept was that they had to provide a specific / particular / idiosyncratic piece. qualified as a “drone paradise” by lasse marhaug (of jazkamer), the result is a fine and coherent whole, full of extended textures, contrasted acoustic surfaces, subtle and strong. idioscapes contains 70 minutes of authentic acoustic researches, with glitches, loops, noises, deep and glittering textures, subliminal frequences and narrative inserts, punctured with sensible musical moments. idiosyncratics is honoured to present these sound masters on idioscapes. infinite thanks to all of them.” y.f.

july 2010 release ; ... getting near the end of this decade-long series of compilations (this is the second-to-last) & there doesn’t seem to be any signs of a well run dry yet ...

... nice focus on more noise-aligned pieces herein (there’a great stretch that goes furudate --> pain jerk --> hijokaidan --> incapacitants --> torturing nurse) & the segments by wiese & menche are a real treat ... but personally i’m excited more by the inclusion of pieces by joseph nechvatal (80’s tape-trader with many appearances on sound of pig cassettes), else marie pade, raaijmakers, tzni avni, and the like from prior generations / schools of thought ...

an anthology of noise & electronic music #6sixth a-chronology 1957-2010

sr290 2xcd digipack + 52 pages booklet

the sixth volume of seven published from 2001 to 2011, curated, noted and edited by guy marc hinant.

so here is the 6th and penultimate installment in our series.

as usual, it culls old historical pieces, little-known gems, and even a few previously unreleased tracks from the greatest japanoise bands, a few representatives of the younger generations (from all around the world), some rare tracks from the '80s, and it all ends with a lull that lets transpire what may be felt as a kind of undefinable mystery.

the avant-garde - the possibility of a new music (think about it). then it scattered into small communities whose best-known protagonists are totally unknown to people outside that particular circle. we are facing this fragmentation, and one form of avant-garde (you could say) ends up scattered into several (not exclusively musical) forms. it is not in avant-garde's nature to create one elementary form for each individual. other phrases used include "forays," "breakthroughs," "pushing the envelope," and then of course "going too far"...
