| april 2008 release ; the perfect compilation really, bringing together a slew of artists whom i’ve had the sneaking suspicion were all related in one way or another ...
nice to see dan “astronaut / oneohtrix point never” lopatin on a proper, replicated disc (under his earlier dania shapes guise) - not to mention pieces by long-time/recent mms perennials such as white rainbow, wzt hearts, bird show, yellow swans, grouper, etc ...
entry-level price point means ; if you’re at all curious about any of these acts (or if you’re already a fan) it’s kind of a no-brainer ... highly recommended !!! |

| v/a - ambient not not ambient cd (audio dregs recordings: adr069)
this collection was curated by paul dickow together with e*rock as a long term project showcasing some outsider ambient works and blissed-out pop from their hometown in portland as well as friends across the seas. emphasis was made to bring together artists from a variety of scenes and different underground bubbles of music producers that remain close to our hearts. though many of the artists may have never previously bumped shoulders it was important for us in keeping a common thread in the musicality and a conscious flow to the collection.
ambient not not ambient should act strongly on its own merit as a complete thematically unified album of exclusive tracks, not an ad-hoc collection of unrelated tracks. this is part of the reason it took us so long to organize from conception to completion and to paint a larger picture with the variety involved. we are now stoked though and proud to offer this maxed-out 75+ minute compilation of exclusive tracks at special "ep" price. what you'll find is the mellow side of sonic terrorists like yellow swans (load records) next to old school electronic mainstays like freeform (skam/warp) or am/pm (dreck) and full blown psychedelic wizards like white rainbow (kranky/marriage) and birdshow (kranky). tracks by lucky dragons unique "sound art" style next to pop craftsman e*vax (of ratatat fame) float together with sparse compositions by sawako (12k). there will be some fresh faces on the table for almost any listener (even the hard-core music nerds), for instance smoke & mirrors is the debut appearance by a new duo featuring strategy’s paul dickow. some of our favorite experimentalists and growling amorphous freedom rock and anti-rock have been cross-pollinated with some of best musical friends and ever expanding audio family.
liner notes:
e*vax "awl" (brooklyn, usa) at the point where the windpipe divides is situated the bird's sound producing organ, a "voice box" called the syrinx. humans have no syrinx but a larynx instead. the avian syrinx is called a lower larynx, being differently situated at the other end of the windpipe. e*vax is half of the band ratatat (xl records) and one of audio dregs recordings founding dudes.
white rainbow "see and the field feels" (portland, usa) white rainbow is adam forkner, a man who lives a life of relative happiness and contentment. he made this music mostly on his computer, with a lot of flanger on the main mix, i think.
mudboy "study for a sleep album (2nd movement)" (providence, usa) experimental excerpt from the doctor or organismal musicology. this piece is from a 40 minute long form composition yet to be released. excerpt by mudboy with erik carlson. produced and mixed by r lyon.
dania shapes "weird boombox" (cambridge, usa) dania shapes is daniel lopatin, who has been dispatching homemade ambient pastiche and noise projects since '04 when he began experimenting with a combination of analog synths, sequencers and and cut-n-paste digital assemblage techniques.
bird show "less of everything" (chicago, usa) bird show is ben vida. "less of everything" was recorded at home soon after finishing the first bird show cd entitled green inferno
yellow swans "to valleys of beautiful arson" (portland, usa) dys is pete swanson and gabriel mindel. this song representing the quieter side in their churning ocean of psychedelic sound and action freedom noise.
wzt hearts "discuss winter" (baltimore, usa) wzt hearts is shaun flynn, jason urick, jeff donaldson, and michael haleta. recorded at lord baltimore studios by rob girardi and mixed at floristree by jason urick.
sawako "nst" (nyc/nagoya) sawako is a sound sculptor, a timeline-based artist and a signal alchemist in the urban life environment who understands the value of dynamics and the power of silence.
grouper "quiet eyes" (portland, usa) grouper is liz harris, from portland and the bay area. she is made of flesh and electrical impulses. she has bones, and muscle tissue surrounding the bones. she also has a variety of internal organs.
nudge "dayrise" (los angeles /chicago/portland, usa) this short piece was quietly pulled from the air with help from brian foote, marc hellner, and rolan vega in a room above some irritable neighbors in chicago during the summer of 2007.
am/pm "even as we here" (london/uk) am/pm is radovan scasascia's second project on dreck records (also known as secondo), whereby he combines popular music and conceptual composing. earlier releases (drk-05/-07/-08) focused on the original concept of composing music entirely from the endings of existing/found music.
smoke & mirrors "ocean" (portland, cascadia) smoke & mirrors are the duo of rhenne molly miles (voice, electronics, guitar) and paul dickow (organ, synthesizer, electronics). they live in southeast portland.
e*rock "exexpat" (portland, or) this track is about returning older methods without repeating myself. this compilation for me is about creating new relationships with people and music while also strengthening some ties that were already there, but in a new way. sometimes you need a reminder that the end product is actually the journey, and that life is an experiment without a concrete prize at the end.
freeform "ante meridian" (brighton, uk) simon pyke's music project, freeform, begun in 1995 out of boredom in british suburbs, growing quickly and releasing a number of albums and toured the world and has has since evolved to house the complete spectrum of sound design and music as freefarm.
chris herbert "whips and jingles" (birmingham, uk) shards. future rock dipped in liquid nitrogen and struck with a toffee hammer. a conscious effort to escape the murk.
lucky dragons "sayles street ok ok" (la, usa) on the hottest day of the year we sat in the backyard of tom's mother's house in pawtucket with the beehives and the mint plants and played slow music. then i went to bamako and made this out of the recordings -- iterative repetitions and bad mpeg compression effects -- in a tiny room with lizards living behind the air conditioner. lucky dragons for this song is luke fischbeck, tom van buskirk, george langford, annelise grimm, and joe grimm.
valet "tuesday partly sunny" (portland, usa) honey owens has been giving us spontaneous, otherworldly, psychedelic sounds (in a variety of bands) for as long as most of us have been in portland. solo she records as valet. |
