dan warburton / jean-luc guionnet / eric la casamétro pré saint gervais” compact disc

  • boxes piled on boxes... all of them empty
  • there was a stiff breeze
chloë recordings press release...
dan warburton - violin.
jean-luc guionnet - alto sax.
eric la casa - microphones.

recorded live in the métro station pré saint gervais, paris, july 10th 2001. editing and mastering by eric la casa. thanks to miek bullock, howie steltzer, ratp, and all those who participated, knowingly or otherwise.

“late in the evening of july 10th 2001,dan warburton took jean-luc guionnet and eric la casa down into the depths of pré saint gervais, a metro station in the quiet north-east of paris. following no pre-determined plan, the three musicians - warburton on violin, guionnet on alto sax, la casa on portable dat recorder with stereo boom mic - explored the acoustics of the station, riding the elevators, taking the stairs, producing a rich and fascinating sonic map of the space through environmental improvisation. "metro pré st gervais" is a unique and remarkably accessible aural document of free improvisation and sound art.”

these loopy fruits bear genetic traces of a non-idiomatic improv harvest-field and of the biogenetic cut-up rhetorics that have redirected their evolution - the violin, digitally unwound, dispersed & re-looped, to arise resurrected as a screeching, synthetical though breathing thumbpiano (!) - into something of a strange kind of world music; specifically, a take at sub-saharan ethnological electro-acoustic improv, a music which as regards its concrete fruits could even be deemed 'conventional', were its actual genesis not achieved by such a wholly different trajectory. but, although conceivable from the aspect of the innate alterity hidden behind the waning mask of old europe - an alterity constituted by the contemporary leakages plaguing fort europe, an ever sinking vessel under perpetual repair in a open sea of migrational forces as old as humanity; and by the indeterable return of the repressed / oppressed that have borne the weight of europe's rising - this music's pseudepigraphic signature just as well bears witness to the logical truism that there are as many ways leading to rome (and paris) as vice versa.

three 3" cd's

featuring:
dan warburton
adam sonderberg
kevin shea

the third part in this ongoing series features percussionist kevin shea, the processing work of adam sonderberg, and violinist dan warburton. these three perspectives cover varying grounds of percussive insanity, microanalysis of texture, and dark swells of surreal melody. out of the series thus far, these three tales reflect the most varied ideas and differing moods, reinforcing the power of the individual experience. a text piece, which was written, edited, modified, and recycled by the three participants is also included.

kevin shea studied music at the berklee college of music in boston. as a drummer/composer he has toured europe, canada and the u.s. most recently he has two releases on touch and go records with the collective stormandstress. current projects include coptic light with jon fine of bitch magnet, and love of everything.

adam sonderberg works predominantly with concrete-based compositions utilizing the computer as a discrete processing and assembly tool. his instrument of choice in a live context is the guitar: tabletop and acoustic.

dan warburton received his phd at the eastman school of music, rochester, ny. a british-born pianist/violinist/composer, he moved to paris in 1988, where his activities have included music composition and performance, as well as broadcasting and journalism for the publications signal to noise, the wire, pulse!, and paristransatlantic.com.

released 02.2006

the i.k.k.-project started in 1794, when christoph schmid wrote the lyrics for ihr kinderlein kommet, using a melody by contemporary composer johann abraham peter schulz. it was performed soon after in thanhausen an der mindel for the first time. in 2001, a few weeks before xmas, i recorded my daughter sonja (aged 5 then) singing some of her favourite xmas tunes.

wonderful recordings. her singing is full of emotional power and she even hits the right notes from time to time. the interesting moments are when her voice is moving around those notes. instead of burying those recordings in the archive i came back to them soon after, because jos moers (the owner of the label meeuw muzak) was asking me to contribute to a series of xmas 7"s he does once every year. so i recorded one for him early in 2002 for 2003’s yearly event: merry merry. side 2 has a funny piece composed from a transformed ihr kinderlein kommet.

when the 7" was done i had the impression that the transformed sounds had a quality of their own, so i used them for further transformations, as well as to compose a new piece of about 15 minutes: i.k.k. – purpurscharlachrot. following my inclination for collaborative works i thought that this material could be of interest, not only for me, but also for other artists to work with. so i prepared a cd-r with the existing versions and some basic material from the piece. pieces have been submitted by dan warburton, andrew deutsch, chris halliwell, strotter inst., stephen vitiello and frisch/rainey/wehowsky.

...

ralf wehowsky

founder of the group p.d. (1981 renamed p16.d4) and the label wahrnehmungen (1982 renamed selektion) in 1980. p16.d4 was one of the most influential groups in experimental industrial music. they developed concepts of material exchange long before the term «remix» was even coined. for their live appearances they were equally at home in punk and no wave festivals and at the holy grails of academic avantgarde like the internationale ferienkurse für neue musik, darmstadt.since the early 1990s wehowsky works under his own name (rlw). his quiet, highly complex style of composition – based on artifacts of instrumental and electronic sound – is influential for numerous artists in the fields of electronic and improvised music. some reflections on his work can be found on tulpas, a 5cd-box-set, featuring more than 50 artists performing their versions of his pieces (jim o´rourke, brume, achim wollscheid, toshiya tsunoda, john duncan, antanas jasenka, ryoji ikeda, john watermann and others).

his recent work embraces musique concrète improvisée (with bruce russell, and johannes frisch, among others) as well as projects based on extended material exchange (i.k.k.).
