jazzfinger / culver & fordell research unit - split lp (edt. 275)

split lp featuring heavy-hitting uk bleak dudes. the a-side is jazzfinger's 'killed in a clear sky,' one solid slab of fucked-up tapped guitar drone and a distant, eerie whir, like a storm of electric feedback, slashes and cuts. far out, and a real killer -- 20 odd minutes to make you lull out.

the b-side is a collaboration between culver and fordell research unit, another side-long piece that starts off with some bassed-up doom chugs and slogs that sound like fucking something that could be set down by some southern lord brutality, but then it punches you in the face with its distorted, churning hell.

limited to 275 white label lps in black sleeves with hideously brutal artwork by french.

this is about as close as i’ve heard skullflower “proper” get to straight black metal (bower’s hototogisu, on the other hand, have been skirting the line from day one) ; the coffin-scratch wailings of (i’m assuming) samantha & matt barely break the wood, instead allowing the tidal surge of demonic guitar (a largely static blaze of electricity) & stuart’s free-limb flail take centre-stage ...

awesome stuff ; these new(er) iterations of skullflower just keep getting better & better ... highly recommended !!!

april 2008 release ; brand spanking new full-length from skullflower, here pared down to the core-duo of matthew bower & the vastly under-rated english dronesmith lee “culver” stokoe (whose work you can find in altering combinations above/below) ... this is only the second release by the duo-lineup & i must say it smokes - a single 42-minute “wall” of chugging guitar colossus; incomparable ...

theoretically expensive u.k. import whittled down to a reasonable price due to my dilligent hoarding ; i honestly doubt you’ll find this for a better price pretty much anywhere out there in the world. skullflower fans, casual or completist, you need this ... highly recommended !!!

ps. you’ve all prob. gathered that i’ve been on something of a skullflower kick for, oh, the past 12 years ... let’s face it; bower’s been the titan of straddling the metal/psych/doom/drone divide for just about as long as i’ve been aware of it (full disclosure; my first “real” band el-ron was formed with the clear intent of merging skullflower and free jazz) ... much more in the pipeline from bower’s axis over the coming weeks ...

first release from new matthew bower group, following the retirement of skullflower and total. working mostly as a trio with bower, john godbert and neil cambell, sunroof mines territory similar to total but with a more group-oriented, communal trance orientation. taking cues from minimalist composers, indian music, and assorted folk musics, sunroof uses guitar, violin, hand percussion, and reeds to build up layer upon layer of stratospheric bliss. the unhurried and slowly unfolding delivery of most of the music makes it suitable for both foreground and background uses. on top of the layers of sound floats bower’s unmistakable, sometimes gentle, sometimes excoriating electric guitar.
