a frames / climax golden twinsafcgt” long playing record

  • new punk
  • channel d
  • sinking
  • old spy

  • thug
  • no reception
  • young spy
  • new mess 2
  • sliding
  • return to thundernest
february 2009 release ; second outing from this clusterbomb, featuring all members of a frames (erin sullivan, min yee, lars finberg) and the climax golden twins duo of robert millis & jeffrey taylor ...

as on their debut 10 for dirty knobby, this is a rather noisy affair, with a frames’ brualist “power trio” tendencies chopped & screwed by cgt ; but for every measure of in-studio manipulation, there’s a good chunk of in-the-red garage rock, with all members chiming away on overloaded, almost surf-rock lineage tunes (even a great bit of distorted steel-pan twang) ...

great stuff ; i’m hoping this project turns into more than just a mere one / two-off ...
uzu audio press release...

afcgt - s/t lp (uzu005)

afcgt = 3 parts a-frames + 2 parts climax golden twins. this is a vinyl release of their self release cdr that was limited to about 75 copies. those lucky enough to have heard that cdr, along with those who have caught one of this beast live in the past year know just what to expect. not quite as robotic and structured as the a-frames, not quite as loose nor remotely as mellow as the twins ever are. raw, noisy, dirty, psyched out punk rock. this record is in the red all the way through, and by the end your speakers should be nearly as blown out as the amps used to record these tracks. this is a supergroup set to lay waste to all other supergroups.

pressed in an edition of 550 on 180 gram white vinyl. packaged in a tip-on style gatefold jacket with silk-screened art.

february 2010 release ; years-in-the-making, this, the second collaborative lp between sir richard bishop, the climax golden twinsrobert millis & jeffery taylor, and david knott is finally tangible ...

a mixture of cgt’s musique concrète / tape-manipulation tactics, gypsy-guitar flourish, sparse room-recorded free-improvisation, and even an honest-to-goodness song / vignette here & there, this one pushes the majority of my own buttons regarding factor / form ; easily my single favorite outing from all involved parties (esp. nice to hear bishop get going on some almost brian ruryk-ian free-gtr scrabble) ...

gorgeous lp edition c/o kris burwash’s uzu audio ; a hand-made screen-printed sleeve (detail of the gatefold below) comes with a photograph attached via metal bracket to the top front center of the cover ... lp itself is a 180g pressing, and is sounding marvelous ; highly recommended !!!
uzu audio press release...

messenger girls trio - excelsior salon trio

messenger girls triothe excelsior salon trio ... comprised of sir richard bishop (by appointment to her majesty—what the old broad did to deserve that, we'll never know) and david knott (improvisationally board certified music therapist), in congress with robert millis and jeffery taylor (often known for their recreational duties in both climax golden twins and afcgt). the quartet last released a trio album in 2002 for the anomalous record label. or perhaps the trio released a quartet album. after that richard bishop toured. dave knott put people's minds back together or took them apart--it just depends on your point of view. climax golden twins devoured 78rpm records and other victrola favorites. meanwhile the quartet trio tape kept rolling—cassette players, digital devices, dictaphones, micro cassette, wire recorders, phonautographs, notes on paper.

edited from hours of material recorded between 2002 and 2008. mostly improvised in living rooms and on front porches. mostly in seattle: on goat hill, at the shabby greenwood grotto studio and at the sun city girls' cavernous blue west headquarters, may it rest in pieces. mostly with acoustic guitars and percussion. occasional insects were wrangled into the proceedings. layered. sliced. stretched. messed, tweaked, poked, prodded, beaten and slipped luxuriously onto a vinyl platter for your listing enjoyment and listening pleasure by the epicureans at uzu audio.

anomalous press release...
"an uncommon nature" lp

coinciding with the 10th anniversary of anomalous records' existence, we are releasing a compilation album based around recordings from the outdoors, and featuring artists we release or are going to in the near future. featured on this lp are new recordings from: jeph jerman, mirror, agog, climax golden twins, jonathan coleclough, mike shannon, monos, richard lerman, and dave knott. throughout the packaging, and on four enclosed postcards, are beautiful black and white photographs taken by rachael jackson in the olympic national park in washington state.

while unified by a common theme, the tracks are quite varied including desert contact mic recordings of rain and wind on a tree [jeph jerman], processed sounds of a gate [jonathan coleclough], erhu played on a beach [mike shannon], mysterious singing 'water babies' [agog], a mixture of wild celery stalks, tundra grass, a cord made from sinew, a whalebone roof support and the seals [richard lerman], and the straight recording of an approaching thunderstorm [dave knott].

this attention to detail in audio is matched by the close up photographs of fungi, dripping sap, and trees which surrounds it.

second issue of the bixobal ‘zine, published by ri be xibalba (aka anomalous records founder & recording artist eric lanzillotta) ... can you believe this? an experimental music (fan) zine that keeps a regular, quarterly publication schedule? far-out ...

this time around we’re treated to article by & on the sun city girls, no-neck blues band, climax golden twins, charlie nothing, robert haigh / sema, phil minton, and jesse paul miller - plus tons of reviews of relevant music(s) ... and of course classified ads. again, the whole’s thing’s a joy to behold, from cover to cover, and is as essential a printed-word document as the sound projector. highly recommended !!!

note: the dimensions of this magazine are roughly 8.5” x 5.5” - i.e. a piece of letter-paper folded in half. it would be nice if you ordered this along with something of equal or larger dimensions; say a 10” or lp, just for convenience’s sake. not a problem if you don’t...

2004 release ; first global transmission from the kuala lumpur-based “experimental musicians and artists co-operative malaysia” , whose various members contribute 5 of the 25 tracks herein ...

the other 20 are from a who’s who of the int’l sound-research circuit and are of phenomenally high quality (the exoticity of the label’s point of origin must have been a contributing factor in getting all involved to contribute vital examples of their work instead of 2nd-tier comp-track dreck) ...

what i’m finding the most enjoyable about this set is the curatorial aspect ... the wide variety of approaches and fidelities on display somehow all blur boundaries in a highly listenable fashion (i.e. instead of segueing the work of like-minded auteurs into dovetail-like situations, the digital pieces morph into the analog into the lo-fi into the composed into the improvised ... many labels could learn volumes from the sequencing of this record alone), making this amongst the first comps to have a “soul”, so to speak...

completely essential listening, one of my favorite comps from recent times ...
