catholic tapes (usa) #ct 053 cs

christopher riggs0:25, 0:50” c30 cassette

  • 0:25

  • 0:50
august 2010 release ; ... after starting this tape of extremely detuned bowed guitar music (deduction via pure speculation : chris ; don’t be all writing me letters) then returning to my desk & forgetting what i was listening to for a while, i started noticing that this sounded exactly like my neighbor (an author of technical manuals for office machines, which i learned by spying on him) when he’s talking on the phone with his daughter (ditto) ; i mean, exactly like him, with his voice filtered through a previously exterior wall of metal & thick brick that removes everything save for the sub 500hz fundamentals ...

this was either a happy accident, or chris has somehow mastered the pacing, then the synthesis of adult male speech patterns ; either way, i’m suitably impressed ...

christopher riggs
0:25, 0:50
c30 // high bias / 100 copies

extremely fascinating and ultra-minimal work from michigan guitarist; christopher riggs. while equally noted for his work in projects like graveyards and traum, and work on his own imprint holy church fever, chrissolo output has been nothing shy of prolific in the past few years with his unique brand of prepared and mangled guitar work that is truly his own. 0:25, 0:50 is a new exploration in minimal sounds and part of a new and ongoing series for chris that is sure to turn heads. while working with a very minimal array of sounds, chris constructs sparse and crooning soundscapes playing off repetitive and cylindrical movements. very unusual.

full color inserts, professionally printed on heavy cardstock, in an edition of 100 copies.

 best of 2010 !!!
holy cheever church (usa) #hcc-050 lp

forced collapseconsider the weather a failure” long playing record

  • consider the weather a failure (1) (12:30)

  • consider the weather a failure (2) (11:50)
june 2010 release ; awesome collaborative session shared between liz albee & chris riggs, timbrally just about as far removed from an imagined trumpet / electric guitar session as is conceivable, dwelling instead in the realm(s) of shrieking, hysteresis-laden electronics & breath-resonance ...

ps. i’ve put an extra-long sound-sample up to demonstrate the range on display here ; first, two minutes of creaking guitar-attack & faint-whisper modes, then “fear of god” style crackle & blister ... enjoy !!!

forced collapse - consider the weather a failure

liz allbee - trumpet, electronicschristopher riggs - guitar

chris: "i think i should start a label."
ben:  "yeah, you should."

50 releases later cheever is still struggling to carve out it's own path through the new american improvisation highway without aping the fine work at broken research. i couldn't think of a better recording to release on vinyl in celebration of cheever reaching the big five oh.  after spending the last 49 releases attempting to imitate the sounds of trumpets and broken down michigan electronics on my effects-pedal-less guitar while keeping one foot in the high-concept-art-recording-is-performance-and-i-have-good-reasons-for-using-antiquated-media zone, i sit down for one recording session with trumpeter liz allbee and she gets inside my brain to anticipate every move i'm going to make.  so much for re-contextualizing extended trumpet techniques with the sounds of michigan basements when she's already doing it for me.

lp edition of 250

rc29: christopher riggs - '5:00, 3:00'

part of a series of eight c30s where each fifteen minute side is evenly divided in a different way. side a contains 3 five minute pieces while side b contains 5 three minute pieces. a single tape limits every piece to the same set of 3-4 sounds. 8 tapes = 8 sets of sounds. piping creaks sway back and forth, tearing through distinct conversation. other parts out now on midori and rigg's label, holy cheever church.
