ed. rz 1023-24 2cdchristian wolff: kompositionen 1950 - 1972

fresh release in september 2011: 2cd-set of compositions by christian wolff. most of the pieces collected for this portrait of christian wolff document the composer’s early activity and were mainly recorded around the time of their composition. each recording exemplifies the sound gestures from their time.

cover design: ott + stein, berlin
scan: christine berkenhoff

finally i realized that the kind of sound made in an indeterminate situation includes what could result in no other way; for example, the sound of a player making up his mind, or having to change it. in fact, the indeterminate notation i've used is, as far as i know, the only possible one for the kind of sound i should like. and don't forget, we also like to be surprised.

... and the rhythm produced by that situation is like no other rhythm.

david tudor: music for piano

2-cd set with recordings by the legendary 20th century avantgarde pianist. with compositions by sylvano bussotti, john cage, morton feldman, christian wolff.

david tudor, pianist - a profession, a vocation, a life. from 1950 until around 1965, david tudor was the epitome of the pianist who could simply play anything. in fact, david tudor was no longer a name, but an indication for instrumentation as dozens of pieces were written "for david tudor".

as early as 1960, after having conquered all of the challenges posed by serial piano music, tudor began to differentiate between composers who filled him with life and those who left him cold - the focus of his repertory became crystallized. the main criterion for his choices were shaped by the part he would play as interpreter in the composition. he distinguished carefully between having a free choice among prefabricated parts - generally called aleatoric, as for example, stockhausen's klavierstück xi (dedicated, as his klavierstücke v-viii, to tudor) - and indeterminate actions. in the first case, they have a tendency to "put me to sleep", whereby pieces that are less limiting led him to say, "i feel that i'm alive in every part of my consciousness".

the program of these cds portrays these distinctions.

earle brown (1926-2002)
tracer
mode 179

earle brown first encountered the work of alexander calder in 1948, whose mobile sculptures brown saw as a visual embodiment of the variable (impermanent) aesthetic that he was striving to create. this "calder aesthetic" stayed with brown throughout his several stylistic shifts. whether he was writing twelve-tone serial music (music for violin, cello, and piano), conceptual graphic scores (folio and four systems), composed material/open form scores (string quartet, new piece and tracer), or "spontaneously composed" music (special events), all of his music shares calder's sense of integral but "floating" variations, which brown described as, "the construction of units and their placement in a flexible situation that subjects the original relationships to constant and virtually unpredictable, but inherent, change (the movement of the units as well as the movement of the viewer)."

brown belonged to a group of composers that today is referred to as the "the new york school" (the group active in new york in the 1950s that included brown, john cage, morton feldman, and christian wolff.)

the works recorded on this disc represent several of brown's compositional styles. at least one piece was selected from every decade of his career, from the 1950s to the 1990s. the ensemble size varies from one player to fourteen.

performers include christian wolff and vocalist joan la barbara, both of whom knew and worked with brown for many years.

several works call for spatialized ensembles spread throughout the hall, perfect for the surround-sound medium.

the classic tape piece octet is presented in new high-resolution transfers from analogue tapes provided by the earle brown foundation in its 4-channel mix by the composer.

the release of this dvd marks ne(x)tworks' recorded debut. ne(x)tworks is a collaborative ensemble of musicians creating and interpreting work that features a dynamic relationship between composition and improvisation. in performance and recordings, the group locates pathways into various types of notation systems and interfaces, striving for a meaningful dialogue with the past, present, and future of creative music.

additional features on the dvd:

  • this is the first dvd of earle brown's music.
  • all performances captured with full video.
  • 36-minute video interview with susan sollins (brown's wife and an expert on his music), cornelius dufallo (founder of the ne(x)tworks ensemble and brown's godson), and micah silver (former director of the earle brown foundation) on earle brown's life and work. the interview, filmed in hd (high-definition) is presented in 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio.
  • hi-resolution 24-bit 5.1 surround recording in dts and dolby digital.

thomas schultz, piano

the melodic and, in the case of the solo piano music, timbral materials from which christian wolff's (b. 1934) music is made are rarely unusual; these are ordinary, everyday things. however, wolff's rhythmic invention is of great range and variety: complex polyrhythms, speech-like-rhythms, the music flowing at a freely fluctuating rate or proceeding in a plain, straightforward manner, silences. this mix of unusual and ordinary results in a music unlike any other. and, in a piece of such length as long piano, the ongoing appearance and accumulation of a great number and variety of short passages results in the constant renewing and refreshing of the listener's perception. this is the world-premiere recording of the composer's largest solo keyboard work to date.

[long piano] seems to me like a kind of geological agglomeration. my hope is that it forms a possible landscape on one extended canvas. at first i just started writing and kept going. my tendency is to work in smaller patches. after the piece was finished i saw jennifer bartlett's wonderfully engaging and cheerful work rhapsody, first shown in 1976. it's a 154-foot sequence of an arrangement of 988 one-foot-square silk-screened and painted enamel plates running around at least three walls of a gallery space. an extreme instance of what i've got in mind.

i had decided not to use the commonest procedure for long keyboard pieces, variations (e.g., frescobaldi, bach, beethoven, rzewski), but sometimes there are series of patches that use tunes (for instance, the very old standby "l'homme armé" and the round "dona nobis pacem") for material. the piece has 94 numbered patches, a few of which are blank (silence) (in bartlett's piece there are the occasional blank squares). the 57th to 67th patches refer to eleven larger sections of a square-root rhythmic structure, each of which has eleven subdivisions whose time proportions are the same as those of the larger sections. the piece also incorporates partial versions (more or less "parodies" in the old music sense) of schumann (the toccata and one of the kinderszenen) and ives's three-page sonata.

natacha diels, garrett list, larry polansky, michael riessler, frederic rzewski, robyn schulkowsky, chiyoko szlavnics, christian wolff.

this marvelous recording of these elusive works features composer-supervised performances by a hand-picked group of renowned new-music exponents. “your first encounter with the music of christian wolff leaves you with the impression you’ve just heard (or played, or read) something totally strange, unlike anything else you know. and yet, upon reflection, you realize it is at the same time something completely ordinary and normal, as familiar in its way as any number of repetitive actions characteristic of everyday life, getting up in the morning, going to school, work, church, washing the dishes, performing the daily tasks of home and family.

weird little tunes, sounding as if they had been beamed at some remote point in the universe and then bounced back again as a kind of intergalactic mutant music; recognizable melodic and rhythmic patterns, somehow sewn together in monstrous pairings, sometimes reminiscent of the demons of hieronymus bosch, composites of animals, fish, flowers, and common household objects: there is order, but also constant interruption, intrusions of disorderly reality upon regularity and lawfulness, combining to create an effect of both familiarity and strangeness: shklovsky’s ostranenie.

you could say this music is surrealist—not reproducing familiar forms, but revealing, behind these, life’s unpredictability. you could say it is political; improvisatory; concerned with collaborative, non-hierarchical forms of social organization; but you can’t really say what it is like (although john cage came close when he said, after a performance of the exercises in new york, that it was like the classical music of an unknown civilization).”

"it's organized sound! (re)assembled improvisation!!"

trios is a collaboration between five musicians, over time, and over space. it combines instrumental and electronic improvisation with non-real-time computer processing and editing. chris mann, douglas repetto, and larry polansky recorded several hours of live improvised material in one session. months later repetto, polansky, and christian wolff recorded some more. the recordings were then sent off to tom erbe, who culled interesting sections from both sessions and then processed, edited, and mixed them to form the six tracks on the cd.

or: organized sound. (re)assembled improvisation.

music composed by john cage, yoko ono, cornelius cardew, steve reich, takehisa kosugi, nicolas slonimsky, george maciunas, james tenney, pauline oliveros and christian wolff.

sonic youth the syr series

having completed construction on their manhattan studios in 1996, sonic youth suddenly found themselves in a position to create unadulterated by the tyranny of time and space. as a result of their natural writing process, whereby collective improvisation congeals over time into song structures, they began to amass a small mountain of tape, most of it containing raw, wild, spontaneous music they reckoned wouldn't be "commercial" enough for geffen to release.

yet the material seemed just as essential and true to their mission, and showed an important side of the band and their process that was usually inacessible to their fans. so instead of a problem, sy saw an opportunity — they decided to release these secret sonic glimpses themselves. sonic youth recordings was born.
