23five incorporated press release...

john duncan and carl michael von hausswolff
our telluric conversation
23five008, compact disc

23five incorporated proudly presents our telluric conversation — the second collaborative album from john duncan and carl michael von hausswolff. this is an album which duncan describes as having been galvanized by magnetism. in a semantic sleight of hand, duncan and hausswolff reveal magnetism through a duality of meanings. one on hand, they speak of the physical phenomenon of charged objects that exert an attraction or repulsion upon other objects; yet on the other, magnetism can be defined the psychological influence wielded by charismatic individuals. our telluric conversation maps out the complexities that emerged through the collaborative pursuits of these venerated sound artists.

the tools that the two employed for our telluric conversation are common to their respective catalogues of recordings, with duncan bringing his shortwave, data streams, and uncanny use of the human voice while hausswolff employed oscillators, sonar, and wire tapping microphones. the album opens with the mechanical rotation of modulated sonar, providing a hypnotic pulse which slowly submits to an obstinate surge of rumbling noise, that in turn collapses into focused white-noise turbulence and tone-bent ssb transmissions. all of this abruptly detours with a protracted spoken narrative from hausswolff who whispers a pynchonesque text about a maggot-infested individual who seeks to remedy his affliction by communing with cobras and geckoes. afterwards, duncan and hausswolff entertain the seduction of the long-form drone constructions; however, their sublime minimalism is so brilliant in its beauty as to be piercingly acute through the purity of honed sinewaves. the final entry from their conversation is the perfect marriage of the established duncan and hausswolff aesthetics, with a spare low-frequency hum deadening the sonic architecture before a static charge of crackled ether supplements the auditory smoldering.

our telluric conversation stands as a bold, expressive piece of sound art, confident in its multiplicity of perspectives caught in a constant flux of attraction and repulsion. the recording comes with a 40 page booklet with an interview between duncan and hausswolff about their histories, ideas, and methodologies; furthermore, the packaging is completed by a curiously tactile o-card, which has been embossed with braille and covered with a rubbery coating.

for almost a quarter century, john duncan has constructed a radical body of sonic provocation through noise, field recordings, installation, and perhaps most notably shortwave. his interests have long been grounded in the psychological implications of sound, and how it has the ability to bring ecstasy, hostility, empathy, abjection, etc. to the listener. always questioning himself and the world around him, duncan remains one of the most dynamic artists of the contemporary era.carl michael von hausswolff is a swedish composer currently working in stockholm. his work involves studies of electricity, frequency, intonation and even paranormal activities within the framework of a challenging conceptual ideology of sound. hausswolff’s audiovisual installations have been shown at biennials in istanbul and johannesburg, and his music has been performed throughout europe and north america. he is also co-monarch (with leif elggren) of the kingdoms of elgaland-vargaland.

founded in 1993, 23five incorporated is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the development and increased awareness of sound works in the public arena, and to the support and education of artists working with and discussing the medium of sound. for the past 14 years, 23five incorporated has remained at the forefront in bringing the most adventurous elements of sound art to the san francisco bay area. 23five has served as an important benefactor to artists such as john duncan, christina kubisch, francisco lopez, achim wollscheid, matt heckert, zbigniew karkowski, atau tanaka, and many more.

lampo (usa) #lampo 001 cd

carl michael von hausswolffthere are no crows flying around the hancock building” compact disc

  • there are no crows flying around the hancock building (40:00)
click the play button to hear an excerpt of "there are no crows flying around the hancock building"
superlative electronic/concréte composition from carl michael von hausswolff, the “co-monarch” of elgaland-vargaland. starting out with what sounds like a mokum 12” played at 16rpm, the pieceunfolds as a rhythmic blur of crisp, distorted electricity and heavily resonant filtering... it isn’t until the faint whirr of a police siren and the hissing motor of a passing bus creep out of the mix at the 7 minute mark that the piece shifts toa “presque rien”-ish study of downtown chicago & its inhabitants.

this does an excellent job of bridging gap between the pan-fried analogia of latter-day pan(a)sonic and the sort of murked-out mystery layers of pieces such as xenakis’ “bohor.” excellent... one of my favorite listening experiences of 2005 (see! this is why you alwayswait until at least mid-january to publish your year-end lists folks...)
lampo press release...
in august 2003, lampo invited swedish artist c.m. von hausswolff to do a project specific to chicago. intrepid traveler that he is, hausswolff ascended to the top of the 100-story john hancock building and collected sounds from the open-air observation deck. while taking in the sights, he recorded building vibrations, passing breezes and overheard speech from tourists. later, in his stockholm studio, he added a series of feedback rotations to suggest crows (guardians or enemies?) encircling the conceptual tower.

the result is this belching, super dense, low-end drone work. hausswolff’s new piece is his rumination on security and paranoia. what makes us safe? is it better to dwell in a cave or in a skyscraper penthouse? could be another lecture on sound and architecture. we hear a secret gastrointestinal message. say what?!

carl michael von hausswolff is a composer, visual artist and curator based in stockholm. his main tools are recording devices (camera, tape deck, radar, sonar) used in an ongoing investigation of electricity, frequency, architectural space and paranormal electronic interference. major exhibitions include documenta x (1997), the johannesburg biennial (1997), sound art - sound as media at icc in tokyo (2000), the venice biennale (2001, 2003 and 2005) and portikus, frankfurt (2004). hausswolff received a prix ars electronica award for digital musics in 2002. he is co-monarch (with leif elggren) of the kingdoms of elgaland-vargaland, all areas of no-man’s land, territories between national boundaries on both land and sea, digital and mental spaces. this nation has its own national anthem, flag, coat of arms, currency, citizens and ministers. lampo first presented c.m. von hausswolff in february 2001, when he performed "circulating over square oceans" with sonar, radar, oscillators and microphones. in august 2003 hausswolff screened his video project “hashima” at lampo.

hausswolff premiered there are no crows flying around the hancock building at lampo in march 2005.

april 2010 release ; deep, long-form works by c.m. von hausswolff, each acting as the sound component to a separate collaborative audio-visual work with juan pedro fabra and jan håfström, respectively ...

graf spee i” is a masterfully executed tone poem, involving a floating a pulsing, root-fifth sine cluster sporadically adjoined by a repeating ghostly figure ; it’s among von hausswolff’s more engaging work & works wonderfully as a stand-alone sans the video component ... “graf spee ii” sounds like ultra slown-down bell tones ; deep, bassy wobble intercut with short, perfectly timed pauses ...

comes in a classy, almost alga marghen-esque type-only sleeve ; highly recommended !!!

carl michael von hausswolff. leech

with his works the swedish artist carl michael von hausswolff takes interest in revealing and using accoustic, visual, social and cultural phenomena. for the cd leech he acts as a parasite on works by olafur eliasson, carsten höller, tommi grönlund / petteri nisunen and richard james. in the three first pieces he sucked energy/sound out from the electric functions of those works; sounds that normally can not be heard. on james' work he bruises the skin surface as leeches usually do before they penetrate the body. this is a new way of sampling; a reading of the un-readable in certain types of art works. it might be a "l'art pour l'art"-production but this was unavoidable as this "search for the real" continued.

leech is the second release by carl michael von hausswolff on raster-noton.

sub rosa (belgium) #sr 191 cd

floating foundations vol.2” compact disc

  • david toop - tricyrtis latifolia (9:40)
  • scanner - weightless (8:51)
  • hardsleeper - ends > circle walks (10:29)
  • carl michael von hausswolff - with the flow against the current (10:10)
sub rosa press release...
floating foundations / vol. 2
disjecta :: mark clifford / david toop / scanner :: robin rimbaud / hard sleeper :: peter maybury / carl michael von hausswolff
sr191

continuing story this second volume marks a continuity and a change - a continuity because, like the first volume, 5 musicians wrote a 10 minutes electronic piece exclusively for the project. and a change because, this second attempt is more varied and explores other domains. the approach of mark clifford (ex-seefeel), for exemple, amends the deal - it's more immediate, less meditative. it was good to work with him again. we had already collaborated with him with his first band - seefeel (highly underestimated in our point of view), david toop gives us a brand new piece too including electronics and guitars (a good choice after his complete cd "37th floor at sunset" sr163). happy too to meet again robin rimbaud (after many collaborations and 3 complete cd since 1995). first try and first succes for hard spleeper aka the designer peter maybury (who just finishes the design of "our first electronic anthology" sr190. fine conclusive piece by cm von hausswolff (first collaboration after his complete cd "rays of beauty" sr88). all in all, the whole is more like a strong energy (the beginning) who little by little goes to a deep and intelligent drone.

disjecta : : mark clifford some great records for warp as disjecta, the founder of seefeel - their "succour" stays as a perfection of the electronica, give us here a complex and sampled work only based on his own guitar. one of the stronger piece ever written by him.

david toop avant guarde musician, brilliant journalist writer and sound curator. david toop is still for us (and not only for us i guess) a klandmark in the vivid music. to be noted an unpublished text written recently by him which complete the notion of 'floating foundation 2".

scanner : : robin rimbaud the active companion in our thoughts and in action for several years, now. after a break, it's already his first pearl for a new beginning.

hard sleeper : : peter maybury well knowned as designer and typograph, it's the first time that peter publishes a musical work on a label - if we except his book (including a cd) published by the famous "immigré" typography company.

carl michael von hausswolff in few words : he was here before many others - more involved now in art /sound installation around the world (venise, sydney, sao paolo…).
