october 2010 release ; that right there’s a nice hookup :: 1/2 of my favorite contemporary a/d hybrid live electronic wranglers caboladies, working his “mass market” debut (originally released on in-house imprint smooth tapes, remastered by robert beatty & sounding quite “huge” here) for my of my favorite contemporary labels, dekorder ...

... while all-in-all there’s less electro-stomp than on his recent dnt trip (i.e. the split/not-split 2cs with bandmate chris “flower man” bush) the folio here holds more in the way of blasted, ecclesiastic borble & more solemn zones (the sound-sample, while quite viscous, is something of a red-herring) ... given that this was recorded almost two years back it makes sense ; and in fact this glimpse into his earlier working methods reveals a less overtly “fidgety” modus, allowing the sounds to bubble & boil in place ...

... glad that these guys are finally getting out there & into the world ; highly recommended !!!

carl calm "dayglo port" lp
(limited edition of 300)

release date: october 15, 2010

carl calm ist the solo project by chicago citizen eric lanham of caboladies. "dayglo port" was recorded and mixed over two days in the tiny back bedroom of the fact house (a house chris and eric of caboladies used to live and host shows in lexington, ky) in the fall with the windows wide open and gear eliminating any floor space.

in contrast to caboladies' extensive jam-heavy explorations "dayglo port" favors a more introspective and rural atmosphere recalling the mood of seminal home electronica classics such as nuno canavarro's "plux quba", sunroof!'s "cloudz" or microstoria's "init ding".

eric lanham started playing music in 2006. his then roommate and longtime friend ben zoeller got him going and they started playing together. they then added chris bush and formed caboladies. they were enthralled with the experimental music they saw coming through lexington, ky (where they were all living) and decided to go for it. it started with pedals and feedback mangling and they eventually moved to samplers and synths. they did their first tour in 2007 with three legged race (hair police). chris and eric moved to chicago in 2009 and continued caboladies as a duo. been grooving ever since....

although they are considered one of the spearheading groups of a new age/synth revival scene in the usa along with emeralds and oneohtrix point never, caboladies have always been equally influenced by the likes of francois bayle, gil melle, bernard parmegiani, and other acousmatic composers, which clearly sets them apart from likeminded artists.

june 2012 release ; ... i’ve been anticipating very few records of contemporary electronic music as much as this, the solo “unmasked” debut of caboladies’ eric lanham (aka carl calm, palmetto moon electronic group) ...

... well, glad to say that he completely delivers on all of the promise built up by the last few tapes ; this is impeccably constructed music, sourced to but a few keyboard-less digital sound modules (and ... a microphone !?) but sounding like an orchestra of laser-tight micro-automated crackle & neat, fizzing miniatures that simultaneously pay homage to electronic music’s “adult” digital past (definitely channeling the nuno canvarro through lithops through mille plateaux continuum) while making no concessions whatsoever towards “accessibility”, “beguilement” or anyting outside of eric’s own private universe of sense & sensibility ...

... simply outstanding, difficult work ; this should do for the digital-hardware scene what matt carlson’s “particle language” did for the analog one ; highly recommended !!!

ps. bobby b. beatty has been on an absolute tear w/ his designs for spectrum spools recently ::

... this one kind of takes the cake, merging a certain “library” style flair with a geographically variant logo-set that is perfectly analogous to the included music(s) :: bravo, robert ...

the sincere interruption
lp

release date 03.07.2012

live improvised music by eric lanham
recorded march 2012 at els
mastered at cgb at d&m
design by robert beaty

it's been a long time coming and it's great to finally announce the release of eric lanham's "the sincere interruption", his first long-playing record under his own name after performing for years under various solo guises such carl calm and palmetto moon electronic group and as one half of the caboladies equation. commissioned back in the summer of 2011, it was finally recorded in march 2012 and it's been well worth the wait.

lanham has crafted a very special set of improvised electronic compositions which rise above many of the contemporaries of his ilk. with an eye on both the origins of electronic music as well as the not so distant past, "the sincere interruption" was recorded in superb fidelity with great attention to sound placement and frequency variations. elements of late 90's-early 00's mille plateaux / warp styled disjointed rhythms are bent into surgically precise and meticulously pieced concrete / electronic form, crammed with information overload situations and infinite variables to one's listening perception. it's a challenge to hear the album the same way twice with the sheer amount of action and peculiarity happening over the duration.

while there are indeed busy moments throughout, tracks like "21:00" and "no ordinates" display an attention to control and deep focus, relying on an idea which develops and evolves seamlessly in subtle variation while retaining a repetitive nature. an outstanding effort and a great addition to the ever evolving spectrum spools catalog.

complete with an outstanding master and cut by cgb and dubplates and mastering.
