c. spencer yeh / sick llamasplit” seven inch single record

  • c. spencer yeh - solo violin 11 (4:34)

  • sick llama - untitled (5:47)
... sorted split between spencer (here issuing the 11th in his “solo violin” series - #1-10 available prior via the titular tone filth lp, now sadly o/p) and heathbarf thothmoerland (proffering an untitled slab of cassette-garble in his inimitable style) ...
arbor press release...
arbor52 c. spencer yeh / sick llama split 7"

the malformed compositions of c. spencer yeh and sick llama come from opposing spectrums of noise music, though their similarities are undeniable. whether it be yeh’s solo piece for violin or sick llama’s gunked tape work, the spirit of improvisation shines through. on yeh’s track, the churning sounds of metal scrapes and light tinges, like crossed electric static and growing, buzzing drones are the result of one violin. his unique approach to the instrument marks him as one of the most exciting improvisers today whether it be with his solo work or through his work in burning star core. sick llama’s untitled piece is one of his most concise and interesting tracks; crushing and dirty with the hiss of tape static. coming from the stoned mind of heath moreland of fag tapes, the expected tape aesthetic is transferred to vinyl with a compilation of cut up compositions, evoking a series of mystery sound sources.

in an edition of 400 7”s in proprinted fold over sleeves with art by maya miller of heavy tapes / religious knives.

anla courtis, okkyung lee, c.spencer yeh, jon wesseltoft "cold burn" lp

edition of 500

superstar live drone fiesta time here, my friends. recorded in oslo, during the auroura borealic night of january, 2010, this beauty thrums with a majesty-vibe arising deep from within the earth. each of the participants has been horn-blown around the globe for mastery of individual string / machine attack. c. spencer yeh’s violin arcs have powered a million strange improv scenes. jon wesseltoft is clearly the king of norwegian harmonium dudes. okkyung lee is a korean polymath re: formal cello innovations, but her handling of rainbow parallelograms is unequalled regardless of national borders. and anla courtis has taken the argentinian electric guitar to points in space unvisited by any of his countrymen.

the two sides of this lp form a brilliant whole. the first is a sequence of small discrete events that cohere because of “fifth minddynamic overlays. the second is the seamless contrail of an arrow shot directly into the heart of the sun. together, they comprise one of the tastiest sessions of motion-as-stasis you will hear in many a dark night. breathe the deep of the still and huzzing air. be free and be one.

burning star coreinside the shadow” compact disc

  • inside the shadow (w. metals) (14:49)
  • now united (7:32)
  • inside the shadow (9:48)
january 2010 release ; proper, mass-market issue of this 2005 dronedisco set from c. spencer yeh, channeling xenakis’ “bohor” & re-routing its scattered-metals approach through contemporary “underground” sensibilities ... this is augmented by a fine 7-minute blast of “bagpipesynth modes & a more blown-out, major-key variant of the title piece’s brownian creep ...

very glad to have this set be more than a blip in spencer’s discographical roadmap ; highly recommended !!!
hospital productions press release...

catalog: hos-212
artist: burning star core
title: inside the shadow
format: cd

a reissue of an obscure tour only recording from 2005 brings to the light the flickering dance of mr yeh and his dives into organic drone music. unlike the majority of his electronic compositions inside the shadow reveals three textures brought to life with violin, chimes and bells that defy most of the contemporaries limitations to synth only exercises.

yeh proves the heart of landscape oriented linear composition is only limited by the imaginations of the creators and brings warmth to an otherwise cold genre with the flame of inside the shadow.

important press release...
smegma - 33 1/3 - cd
imprec137 - cd

33 1/3 is smegma's tribute to their 20th century avant-garde and out-jazz influences. the title is one part reference to the happy revival of passionate vinyl listening in the 21st century and one part celebration of their long hard slog of 33 1/3 years of being one of the most free thinking and original american underground groups. their focus, ideas and determination has brought them through more than three decades and to this day they remain unparalleled, original and highly influential.

33 1/3 is enhanced with live videos of happy holidays live at end times festival (with spencer yeh and twig harper) as well as grubsteak live at the three million tongues festival in chicago.

smegma. seriously. they've been at it for so long now that you can't really even say they sound like anyone else. you can only say that others sound like them. they're all here on 33 1/3: oblivia, ju suk reet meate, burned mind, conroy, dr. id. the core group drumming up their influences and pulling off another burning album of magnificent proportions.

while smegma has never really fit in anywhere their influence on the modern avant garde and improvised noise scene is absolutely undeniable. however, it's essential to remember that smegma has never been noise for noise's sake. while they've had two feet firmly planted in avant-garde & free jazz one must not forget their rock roots as well. for this reason alone they're bound to not fit in anywhere. influences aside, not matter how much everyone else sounds like smegma, you can bet that smegma is always going to sound like nobody else. nobody else channels so much energy, effort, influence or sound into their work. they may just be the greatest american band. ever.

blasted trio date betwixt paul flaherty (external lung), chris corsano (limbic disrhythmia), and c. spencer yeh (sandpaper as rosin) - 80mph free jazz clomp w/plenty of scrape/holler interaction. this comes pretty damn close to what it sounds like inside my head... vinyl version here is a completely different record/session than the “a rock in the snow” disc...

  • drips (skit) (2:35)
  • au revoir... (6:34)
  • ... et bonne nuit (8:15)
december 2011 release ; ... after a year-long dalliance with pop music (well, his twisted definition of pop music anyways) it’s nice to hear spencer return to the pan-trajectorial approach of his prior solo music, here embodied as a dove-tailing selection of what sound like glass harmonica pieces (i.e. “drone”) & threshold-gated sound poetry (i.e. “voice”) leading into a pair of excellent psycho-acoustic guitar-sculpture-interference studies (i.e. “two guitars”) into a pair of digitally-munged musique concrète etudes (i.e. “au revoir... “ et “... et bonne nuit”) ...

... all of which are areas of exploration previously witnessed across his solo work (only his acoustic & electric violin playing is absent) ; yet here the pacing & narrative arrangement(s) lend a decisive cohesion that makes this so much more than a random assortment of odd extracts & experiments :: it works beautifully as an album-proper & stands as one of spencer’s major works (although i’m not buying this “debut album” crap) ... highly recommended !!!
intransitive press release...

1975
c. spencer yeh

intransitive recordings is extra-proud to present 1975, the debut solo album of tightly-coiled, crackling electronic ambience by c. spencer yeh. while “debut” may seem a strange word to use to describe an album by a guy with such a deep discography, yeh explains that 1975 is like nothing anyone has heard from him before. “one thing is i really wanted to focus on a certain feeling of stasis. so much of what else i do just kinda pushes and pushes forward. 1975 is more vertical than horizontal, even though one can’t escape the horizontal completely.” taking a confident step away from his familiar work as an improvising violinist and vocalist, from the mythology of his rock / noise band burning star core, and from his recent forays into pop music, the omnivorous yeh here reveals himself to be a composer of unsettling electro-acoustic miniatures.

yeh approached his source material with a desire to be transparent, even literal, and to avoid straightforward narrative. the literal is there in the deceptively matter-of-fact track titles — “drone”, “voice”, “shrinkwrap from solo saxophone cd”, “two guitars” — but knowing which sound source is buried beneath these tones does little to remove 1975‘s sense of enveloping mystery. this is sensual abstract music with a light touch, a confident minimalism that only reveals its unsettling depth, sharp corners, and playful malevolence with repeat listens.

for fans of eliane radigue, hecker, pita, or kevin drumm.

born in taiwan, and now based in brooklyn ny, c. spencer yeh is the one constant of the “band burning star core, whose other members have included mike shiflet and trevor tremaine & robert beatty of hair police. he has collaborated with a staggeringly diverse range of artists, including john wiese, tony conrad, new humans w/ vito aconcci, aaron dilloway, okkyung lee, evan parker, yellow swans, greg kelley, paul flaherty, don deitrich (of borbetomagus), and chris corsano (to name just a few).

july 2009 release ; for a free improv 7 (something of a rarity these days ... or ever, discounting the fmp and incus ones) i was of course expecting straight full-bore sandblasting - the kind that makes you notice the format’s inherent frequency-response & surface-noise problems less ... but this is in fact an entirely dynamic & quite well mastered / pressed set from spencer, wasteland jazz unit’s jon lorenz, and ryan jewell, with nary a pop or fizzle-out to be found ...

2 sides of bent frown jazz from the hardcore supergroup of lorenz, yeh and jewell. side a comes on all fifth dimension hard think: violin scrunch and squeal, hard tom rub and dense harmonic blowing pushed right to the front of your brain box, jams a frantic fanfare with locked horn and strings before giving in with a wheeze and a tinkle. side b's call and answer shies away as fragments fragment into bowed skin, seesaw string microtone and rasped mouthpiece until spunk rock free jizz looseness explodes in downtown turntable street.

  • the junkman’s obligato
september 2009 release ; awesome set of rising, freely-improvised thunder from tom surgal, lin culbertson, carlos giffoni, and c. spencer yeh, recorded at last year’s no fun fest ...

while this teeters on the edge of an fmp-lineage euro-improv blowout, the rest is pure new york noise, with the solenoids attached to tom’s endlessly flailing limbs actually powering the rest of the group’s electronic apparatus ...

crystal clear recording lets us actually hear the detail for once ; nice one !!!

recorded live at no fun fest 2008. white out (tom surgal and lin culbertson) are true pursuers of the mythical everlasting improvisational fire. with a style thats both oblique and right to the point tom's dynamic poly-rhythmic percussion and lin's dynamic electronics and voice are augmented in this scorching live recording by c. spencer yeh (burning star core) on violin and carlos giffoni on analog synth. this was their first collaboration and is full of amazing interplay that covers a wide spectrum of sound, from other-world evolving sounds to furious free improvisation to thick layers of dense drones, this is a totally bombastic and essential document of ageless modern improvisation.

this installment includes “white swords in a black castle” (colossal wave of distorted chordal activity done in collaboration with iovae and hair police & issued as part of a double cd-r set on dronedisco; reminiscient of pita’s “get out”), “sun staved skyscrapers” (looping free-jazz/psych overload with robert beatty, trevor tremaine, dana hamblen, and jeremy lesniak from a since 1972 tape), and “to spread your dying flower one last time” (three minutes of doom-drone; initally spencer’s half of a split w/mike shiflet on gameboy)

new humansaka vito acconcinew humansc. spencer yeh” compact disc

  • you in the background (25:59)
  • double negative (32:38)
march 2008 release ; a document of a “happening” what which occurred at the elizabeth dee gallery in nyc during 2007 involving howie chen, mika tajima, and eric tsai’s new humans art / music project (i’ve got / have had some of their lovely self-pressed records in stock) plus artist / architect vito hannibal acconci (i practically lived inside his “island in the mur” in graz for a straight week a few years back - completely amazing piece of work there ...) on recitation and c. spencer yeh on double-bowed violin ...

this is, for all intents and purposes, a free-for-all, with acconci’s filthy texts dotting the wall of electronic sound in the first piece (getting all-but-buried in spots) - following by an extended “instrumental” take in which spencer’s acoustic / unamplified violin (front / center) does battle with new humans’ battery of noise-makers ...

removed from the art-world connotations (the images of the staging of the event show each member of the ensemble bricked-off, each in their own cubicle / cell) this is a fine slab of noise-drone improv... spencer is particularly on-point throughout (natch) & new humans have dropped any semblance of “rock” from their approach, now dealing in pure free sound. highly recommended !!!
semishigure press release...
new humans
aka vito acconci / new humans / c. spencer yeh
cd / semi 011

noise surrounds and permeates us, and no one is more responsible than the new humans from that loudest and noisiest of metropolises: new york. from installation art to ear splitting live concerts, this infernal power trio lead by artist mika tajimi eschews no collaboration, no matter how insane. guitarist and artistic leader tajimi is supported by electronics specialist and voice acrobat howie chen, drummer eric tsai, as well as a large number of guest musicians. the new humans like nothing more than to drag friend and foe with them into their noise avalanches.

semishigure proudly presents the fourth release, a unique live collaboration with artist vito acconci, a pioneer of body/conceptual art, and vintage experimentalist c. spencer yeh. this album consists of two concerts that took place during an exposition of the collective at the elizabeth dee gallery in new york. two electrifying, memorable performances that just had to be registered on cd.

the last time american performance legend vito acconci collaborated with a band was more than ten years ago, when he worked with punk rock brigade the mekons. a similarly untainted, classically grim punk attitude shines through in his spoken word performance with the new humans. “you in the background” is the name of their jointly raised middle finger to the world. floating on the ominously swelling waves of noise created by the new humans, acconci throws all frustrations overboard. captive to a feverish, shamanic trip, acconci speaks of each and everyone’s search for their own identity. acconci has made a special selection from his audio works for the occasion. texts such as “now do you believe the dirty dogs are dead(1978) and “cry, baby!(1977) still sound like screams for enlightenment and liberation. c. spencer yeh’s plaintive violin careens into the impenetrable wailing wall of feedback. the new humans not just voice, but scream their anger of life under the bush regime, and in acconci they have found a worthy ally.

 c. spencer yeh and the new humans go the whole hog on the second live concert, an immensely loud drone séance lasting half an hour. like no other, radical violinist yeh manages to infiltrate any collective, be it dream/aktion unit, comets of fire or smegma. through his trademark exorcising velvets violin sound yeh manages to create unbearable tension with the new humans’ sound avalanches in hot pursuit. during the performance, a glass sculpture is destroyed and the noise of its breaking amplified. at any moment the waves of noise terror threaten to submerge yeh, but he stands firm. thank god this all-engulfing live experience has been registered for posterity!

merciless” by mike shiflet

the devastating companion to 2011's 'sufferers' is here.

ohio-based noise veteran mike shiflet’s decomposed visions were put into crystal clear focus on 2011’s ‘sufferers’, and ‘merciless’ is that record’s seismic companion piece. shiflet’s expertise in the field of experimental noise music has been shown on a whole host of albums, collaborations and hyper-limited releases but has rarely been framed so succinctly as on this duo of records.

continuing ‘sufferers’ exploration into grim, teeth-chattering tape manipulation and drone we are introduced to the landscape of ‘merciless’ with the hospital-room grind of ‘feeble breaths’, a dense slab of guitar plucks, compressed air coughs and dentists drill squeals. these sounds are crafted into grit, drone and white noise to create a slowly shifting dense wall of oddly familiar sound. it isn’t all doom and gloom however, as shiflet manages to show his tender side on the meltingly epic ‘exodus and exile’ which might be his most beautiful composition to date. a cascade of synthesizer tones that echo the most haunting moments of ligeti or even arvo part, this is somehow all underpinned by a sense of imminent dread. a dread which shiflet cashes in on the album’s title track, an extended collaboration with noise superstar c spencer yeh, who matches his signature violin abuse with shiflet’s shimmering electro-acoustic treatments.

merciless’ is an unrelenting piece of work, and all the better for it. let it sink in and prepare to have your mind prized open, you won’t regret it.

so mark perry 'discovered clayton' wandering covington streets. clayton was too well-dressed to be 'just another homeless dude' as mark put it... mark started a dialogue which turned into sporadic jams with clayton, then mark decided that gordy horn get-togethers were the best formats for clayton and you know the rest... 'do you know karate?tara was a singer with a very sloppy and very loud noise jam thing in the early nineties that i liked a lot--in particular i liked this pretty quiet small young girl that would transform into a screaming banshee on stage... we talked and then they moved to la; her boyfriend od'ed, she moved back, and we started talking again.  scott and i were in a collaborative mood. we met up with aimee who was willing to bring her harp around, and gordy was a four-piece for 8 months or so around june to dec 1999...  the quartet with spencer and adam was really the go-to quartet for a while there (2003-2006) and i am glad we got one of those jams on the record.

- tim schwallie, spring 2010, cincinnati ohio.

justin lieberman / c. spencer yehobject lessons” picture disc long playing record

  • bird in a gilded cage

  • dell inspiron laptop
  • krusty bong
  • slurpee lamp
  • wheelbarrow
  • letter to an antique water pump
april 2009 release ; collaboration between visual artist justin lieberman (lyrics and vocals) and c. spencer yeh (music and vocals) ...

given the music’s often goofy / puerile predilection(s), perhaps it helps to see this more as an objet d’art :: a gorgeous gatefold sleeve (adorned with photos of a few of lieberman’s recent pieces on the outside, and ms-paint lineage cartoon-collage depictions of each of the songs in the interior) holds a picture-disc lp, coated in further cartoon-ish depictions ...

the presentation reminds me a bit of the last few eventuell lps, and in fact that particular meshing of high-art / lowbrow-sound is close to lieberman / yeh’s whole modus here ...

artist: justin lieberman & c. spencer yeh
title: "object lessons"
format: picture disc lp
catalog: what008

"object lessons" and what of this ten-song collaboration between artist lieberman and yeh ?  perhaps the influenced musically discussed is somewhere starting between mutual love of various artistic and musical genres certainly -- sound poetry, psychedelic rock, japanese scum noise, japanese psychedelic rock, listy lists, but certainly embodies more the present-time sensibilities and whims of both between the two artists to combine for something perhaps neither strictly adhering to any imitation.

perhaps to this record appropriately let's step back to new york artist justin lieberman's 2009 sculptural and multimedea work "the corrector's custom pre-fab house" -- a description from the debuting gallery follows --

the corrector's custom pre-fab house is inspired by robert venturi and denise scott-brown's 1972 book, learning from las vegas, which provides an in depth examination of what they call 'the decorated shed,' a simple structure with elaborate signage. using the urban sprawl of las vegas as an example, they posit this architectural style as a means to enrich the symbolic content of post-modern architecture. the corrector's custom pre-fab house is a steel dwelling covered with a multitude of objects including a 1970s snowmobile, a life sized jolly green giant, foam filled inflatable toys, an illuminated fedex sign, and a 7 foot shark. accompanying the house is a sculpture of the 'corrector,' a character inspired by the fictional figure, nobusuke tagomi, from philip k dick's novel, the man in the high castle. the novel follows tagomi in a fictional future fifty years after germany and japan defeat the allied forces in world war ii. lieberman's interpretation of taogmi is that of an avid collector of all things pop culture, whose collecting habits extend to the exterior of his home. within the house, there is a computer equipped with a program that enables the 'corrector' to archive each object with an informational text about the object's history, which is then projected onto the adjacent wall of the gallery. created in the style of a katamari video game, the program features texts on each object taking various forms such as objective accounts, plagiarized product descriptions, aesthetic meditations, poetry, short fiction, satire, and prose. these texts were then transformed into the record, object lessons, a musical collaboration between justin lieberman and c spencer yeh. the record is a spoken rendition of select object descriptions that were reworked into an ... musical format.

full-color gatefold jacket, depicting abovementioned objects piled up in a grassy field, and the empty dome waiting for occupancy, and inside special ullistrations for both ten tracks -- with fullcolor picture disc lp showing the corrector statue's head in both sketch and final form.
