locust (usa) #locust 35 cd

no. 9where come from? and where to?” compact disc single

  • no.9 - where come from? and where to?
  • hrvatski - “... bottle of claret for you if i’d realised”
  • bundy k. brown - laws of large numbers
nice little ep single thing here, a precursor to mr. 9’s forthcoming us debut album on locust. had a lot of fun with the remix (esp. as joe and i use the same hardware sampler, taking all of the bite of constructing millions of programs in order to do the remix). bundy’s remix is very, very beautiful. and the original is a fine slice of contemporary electronic digital pop. very cool...
locust press release...
first up, is a new cd ep by no.9 (joe takayuki) featuring a fine cut, “where come from? and where to?” from his fortcoming debut full length, mushi-no-ne. no.9 is an unsung electropop mastermind from tokyo’s invigorating onkyo scene whose knack for melodic pop, jazz grooves and stuttering rhythms recall the cinedelic scores of umiliani, tv spy jazz & the wistful hooks of 60s pop. this ep features two generous remixes by boston’s hrvatski (aka keith fullerton whitman) & chicago’s ken (bundy k.) brown (directions in music, pullman). hrvatski locks “where come from” into a galactic rub a dub mix of typically high quality tom foolery & ken brown cuts the caffeine & checks in with a mellow hypnotic drifter’s soundtrack.

minority (czech republic) #min 20 ep

gastr del soltwenty songs less” seven inch single record

  • twenty songs less side one

  • twenty songs less side two
... kind of an odd reissue choice for the czech minority records label, but then again this has long been the only unavailable side by the o’rourke / grubbs / mcentire/ brown lineup of gastr; here at their deconstructionist best with jim handling the tape-splice duties throughout ...

again, i balked a bit @ the price, but after these arrived & i (re) listened to this about 4 times in a row (first time i’ve heard it 10 years) & i now have not the buyers’ remorse ... extremely well-done edition, from the whisper-quiet 7” pressing (listen to the sound-sample) to the clear vinyl & replication of the original teen-beat label-art ...

  • the watersample (kiln mix) (3:52)

roomtone press release...
tarwater, aka bernd jestram and ronald lippok, have been making music together for a while now, starting years ago in a punk band under the wary eye of the east german secret police. more recently, tarwater has effected a more subtle subversion, garnering praise for the album silur, which combines song structures with spoken-word fragments and sub-aquatic electronics. most of the mixes on the remix ep were sourced from silur. their 2000 release, the surreal, creepily ambient animals, suns, & atoms, picks up right where silur left off with its detached vocals (see "all of the ants left paris") and cool hypnotic loops.

along with fellow travelers mouse on mars, to rococo rot, and kreidler, tarwater is creating some of the most adventurous sounds to come out of germany since the heyday of krautrock.
