soft left onto westland
by boris hauf
mosz
mosz 008 • 2005

boris hauf, born 1974 in uk, currently living in berlin, as founder of efzeg (boris hauf, burkhard stangl, dieb13, billy roisz, martin siewert), part- time member of chicago based bands tvpow and lozenge, he is better known as improvising musician - he works with acoustic (mainly saxophone) and electronic instruments. other works/projects include comissioned compositions for international festivals, radio- & tv-stations, film, ensembles, solists, performers and theaters.

'soft left onto westland' [mosz008] is the label's 6th release. like martin siewert, boris hauf - primarily introduced and known as an improv musician - produced a rather nontypical cd on mosz which is actually 'sax-free' and only made of electronic sounds ranging from very subtle and minimal to kind of techno-like. skilful and with great musicality hauf mounted all these samples to a surprising result, meaning a groovy, funky and atmospheric album with some ambient parts in-between. 'soft left onto westland' is another kind of 'pop' release on mosz which takes the listener to a relaxed state without being cheesy just one single second.

all tracks composed, reformed and recorded by boris hauf (akm/ austro-mechana), chicage and berlin 2004

voice on 'waste management business': d bayne
singing glass on 'dust': mark stevens
additional recordings on 'tacoma narrows bridge': todd carter

mastered at studio beige by nicholas bussmann and boris hauf, berlin 2005

thanks to litó walkey, the hauf mafia, nickel bussmann, re-p, mosz, michael hartman, todd carter, brent gutzeit, kurt johnson, mark stevens, d bayne.

sijis releases: 'clark' (siji15 - 2006)

music and cover photo by boris hauf (akm/austro mechana) may + june 2005, berlin
mastered by todd a. carter, sparrow sound design / bel_air, august 2005, chicago

a question before we begin: don't you lie awake at night wishing that philip k dick had written music to accompany his vision of dystopia? all that time he was working in a music store and we only get books...
well luckily, mr. boris hauf has supplied us with the next best thing: 35 minutes of dedicated science fiction and long late nights at substance d. parties.

mr. hauf takes the beat structures of those head-nodding electro parties we were too young sneak out to and twists the framework, tickles the rules into a howling rush of claustrophonic rapture. we are hurtling through a long tunnel, cantankerous robots squeeze past our electrocuted ears, basting our brains with the moisture from the walls.

sure you can dance, but thinking is so much more handsome these days.

this release, 'clark', contains our first misheard song accidentally dedicated to the first post human: tony clifton. that should be enough for anyone.

isn't it about time somebody started thinking about dance structures, tried removing the comfort blanket of expected thuds and hi hat traffic jams? 'clark' is full of semistructured hazards, howls of disco happenstance and cyborg jockeys with gabbling crankshafts and melting tiny percussive parts.

mr. hauf's adjustments both to the metre grid frameworks and to the power structures inherent in beat music create 4 important and scientific events:

1. unwanted explosions
2. long muttering drives on low resolution autobahns
3. high levels of buttery machine funk
4. the syncopated molecules in microwave meals will finally understand

the great anti-anti-utopia is here.

it's a sijis release. would you expect anything less?

improvised music from japan extra 2006 special berlin issue

out december 24, 2006

in japanese only
80 pages; 21cm (h) x 15cm (w)
2 cds included
cover and cd design by suzueri

in addition to interviews of 12 musicians/1 group residing in berlin (gregor hotz, nicholas bussmann, merle bennett, thomas ankersmit, ignaz schick, hans strobl, pure, annette krebs, andrea neumann, caramel empties, alessandro bosetti, boris baltschun, and kai fagaschinski), this "extra" issue of imj features 2 cds with 18 tracks by a total of over 30 musicians, almost all of whom are berlin residents: adeline rosenstein/andrea neumann, annette krebs/steffi weismann, kommando raumschiff zitrone, michael thieke unununium, lucio capece/axel doerner/robin hayward, tunar, alessandro bosetti, tony buck/andrea neumann, sink, marzipan marzipan, kalkuel & leidenschaft, boris hauf, phillip sollman, thomas ankersmit, ignaz schick/jason forrest, burkhard beins, rechenzentrum, and blumm.

the interviews were conducted by toshimaru nakamura during a visit to berlin in january 2005 (with the exception of the email interview of annette krebs by taku sugimoto, which took place between january and april 2006). in addition to discussing their musical activities, the artists share many of their thoughts about the berlin scene. their candid views reveal the dynamism that has characterized that scene since the late '90s. berlin musician nicholas bussmann was in charge of the selection of artists for the accompanying cds, and the result is an ideal compilation for those who want to know more about today's berlin scene. through the words and music of musicians on the scene, this issue explores the current situation of improvised music (and related genres) in berlin.
