vision creation newsun follows the groovitude of the much-love super are with additional funkiness and space-time continuosity. it is funk, it is trance, it is drum'n'bass, and it is wayyyyy psychedelic.

the boredoms' pirouettes into new musical highs with each subsequent release have consistently impressed the world's rich supply of joyless humbugs, impressed the clinically indifferent, and amazed the unamazeable. they've been doing it for years.

the same reliable line-up -- vocalist yamantaka eye leading a celebratory loin-cloth journey to the heart of the sun; guitarist yamamoto seiichi surfing grooves effortlessly with the silkiest pickin' since ry cooder discovered sangria; yoshimi p-we adding her graceful-as-the-kitchen-sink drumming style while keeping it with the corps; plus a new starship trooper who just pushes the beat farther into space -- that has always created music for all 'noids to rejoice to.

on their 10th full length album japan's boredoms turn on, tune in (to each other) and drop out to an astral plane that you never even knew existed.

gone is the hyperactive, channel surfing, genre hopping of the past. in its place is communal psych jamming the likes of which have not been heard since vintage butthole surfers (remember that anyone?) or amon duul 1 or the most psychedelic sounds funkadelic ever made all channeled through eye and the band's encyclopedic musical knowledge.

it all adds up to one disorientingly great listen that you will not soon forget. the us release is packaged with a massive 16 page booklet of eye (damaging) artwork.

ground-zerolive 1992+” compact disc

  • orange (0:52)
  • metal spy (0:30)

  • vs (1:27)
  • vv (1:20)

  • lam chen - ying (8:22)
  • vt (5:56)
  • grape (0:16)
ah... this one takes me back...

ground-zero were of course otomo yoshihide’s long-running free-jazz/improv/noise/psych unit, blazing something of a singular path between august 1990 & march 1998 featuring a rotating lineup that, over the years, included such heavyweights as kato hideki, makigami koichi, masahiro uemura, yamatsuka/yamantaka eye, hirose junji , tony buck, tenko, ryoji hojito, mick harris, hoppy kamiyama, sei’chi yamamoto, samm bennett, kazuhisa uchihashi, mitsuru nasuno, masaki shimizu, yasuhuro yoshigaki, sachiko m, masahiko okura, and kazunao nagata.

this early concert from february 1992 (recorded @ 20000v in tokyo) features otomo, hirose junji, kato hideki, uemura masahiro, and yamantaka eye; sonically much closer to the raw blat of the boredoms than anything you’d associate with otomo these days - at this stage he was still playing a sawed-off guitar with a metal pipe and turntables (often scratching/jump-cutting all over distorted hip-hop beats & rock guitar - listen to the sound-clip - closer to something like john oswald’s plunderphonics) with eye caterwauling all over the place, and the rest of the band following suit with disjointed rhythmic jabs & all kinds of free-scream gestures...

two studio pieces at the end of the disc, in all of their damaged-fidelity glory, rule. an excellent disc, especially great for the boredoms fan or anyone with a soft-spot for otomo’s noisier excursions...

live 1992 +

otomo yoshihide (guitar, turntables)
hirose junji (sax)
kato hideki (bass, voice)
uemura masahiro (drums)
yamataka eye (voice)

this cd includes unissued live performances and studio recordings (12, 13) right after otomo formed ground-zero. this happened before the release of their first album, called "ground-zero" (god mountain). their playing is in the rough and sound quality is not quite best, but this materials should be kept a record of their intence performances of earlier ground-zero for future ages. this is remembrance of fresh / poisonous earlier ground-zero after interval of 15 years.

composed by otomo (1, 2, 3, 6, 9, 11), hirose & eye (4), kato & eye (5), otomo & eye (12), all members (7,8,10,13)

please note that noise and gaps in the sound are due to the recording conditions and the nature of the music. thank you for your understanding.

thrill jockey (usa) #thrill 197 cd

boredomssuper roots 9” compact disc

  • livwe!! (40:29)
... ninth installment in the boredoms’ decade-spanning “super roots” series ; domestic (read: reasonably priced) edition c/o thrill jockey. sonically similar to recent concert-outings by the band (i.e. multiple drummers playing in time over static/punctuating electronic drones c/o jon gibson) - only here augmented with a 20-person choir. undeniably powerful, even if this recent wave has been (imho) a real departure from the band’s roots, super or otherwise ...

thrill jockey thrill 197

long regarded as musical pioneers, boredoms have continually pushed sonic boundaries and inspired musicians for over 20 years. their albums and their performances defy categorization, each one a completely unique event. the one commonality is that the members of the boredoms have amazing technical skills as musicians, limitless imagination and the ability to combine the two - as no others have.

in april the first new edition in eight years to the super roots series, super roots 9, finally gets a worldwide release. super roots 9 is a recording of a live show on christmas eve in 2004, in japan. the performance featured a 20-person choir alongside the group. super roots 9 is the first live recording of the band ever released. the cd, packaged in a special custom-made mini gatefold lp style jacket, features artwork by eye and a 40-page perfect bound booklet with music scores and notations.

in conjunction with the release of super roots 9 the band will be on their first extensive tour in over two years. it will be the first time the band has performed in the round in america. where possible, fans will be able to move completely around the boredoms and experience it from all viewpoints - to move with the sound - to participate in the motion of the performance! the bands most recent north american performance was 77 drum on 07/07/07 on the lawn of the empire-fulton ferry state park section of brooklyn bridge park. the band led 77 drummers in a once-in-a-lifetime event. they promise more than a few surprises on this tour including the sevena, a 7-neck guitar. as with all boredoms shows, this will not be just a show but an event not to be missed!!

thrill 171 • 2007

hot on the heels of their latest record of hard-hitting polyrhythmic skree, ooioo have unleashed fellow sonic cohort eye from boredoms to dismember and reassemble two of their songs. umo and uma get the remix treatment here, resulting in two long tracks that reinvent yoshimi’s jet-propelled psychedelic pep rallies as bass-driven dancefloor slammers. as eye has shown us on recent boredoms records, he has an uncanny knack for harnessing a groove and blowing it up to a previously unknown scale, and thats exactly what he does here.

available on cdep and 12” vinyl single, both formats feature artwork by eye. the cdep comes in a full color digipak with deluxe spot-matte finishing and obi strip. the vinyl single comes in a full color sleeve with the same artwork and printing, and is strictly limited to 1,000 copies worldwide.

the release of this single coincides with ooioo’s upcoming tour of the us. it’s not often that the band comes stateside for some shows, so we’re glad to celebrate their arrival with this special, limited edition release.

atp/recordings press release...
originally released in 2001 as the companion to atp 1.0, all tomorrow's parties 1.1 was curated by sonic youth, and was initially created to accompany the all tomorrow's parties events held in los angeles and england.

this compilation definitely has the sonic youth fingerprint with acts as far ranging as noise mavens boredoms to husky crooner cat power. features exclusive unreleased tracks and new song versions by sonic youth, unwound, stephen malkmus, stereolab, bardo pond, cat power, papa m, cannibal ox, dead c, boredoms, kevin drumm and satans tornade.

this compilation captures the very spirit of the atp festival by matching disparate musical elements that together create a cross-section of the very best under-represented music.
