| december 2009 release ; very nicely done issue of this 1973 ohio private press (new frontiers) free-noise chestnut, predating just so much outsider noise-improv by decades ...
after meeting up at a stooges concert, drummer bob thompson & guitarist doug snyder met one fine day in october 1972 in thompsons kitchen & bashed out this set of fiery improvs, seemingly influenced as much by iggy et.als proto-punk moves as coltranes whole sheets of soundethos ; while thompsons crisp drumming is perfectly nuanced, snyders wall of amplified guitar-scuzz seems hell-bent on wrapping a damp blanket of brown noise around the entire frequency spectrum, his rust-scarred riffing & energy-void scrape owing as much to ron asheton as sonny sharrock ...
thompson & snyder continue to play music together to this day (they released a disc on the scottish dead earnest label in 1999 that featured snyder on midi guitar) ... but for a while they went their separate ways ; thompson played a gig or two with pharoah sanders & new age pianist scott cossu & snyder did a bunch of other things, including playing in the pre-borbetomagus super-group sick dick & the volkswagens (with donald miller, brian doherty, and occasional member lester bangs) & contributed to a bunch of compilations (notably to the 4th issue of lafms cassette magazine light bulb in & just another asshole #5) ...
cantors aaron levin has done us all a major solid by way of this ridiculously nice, all-angles-covered edition, replete with a tasty full-bleed stoughton tip-on sleeve, a whisper-quiet rti pressing, and even an extended 20-page, 6 x 6 booklet of essays, interviews, and interrogations , all strip-sealed inside what it inarguably one of the major reissues of the (waning) year ... highly recommended !!! |

doug snyder & bob thompson - daily dance
a high-quality reissue of the underground noise-psych classic
time overlaps itself ...
daily dance is a genuinely unique artifact from rural ohio; a mythical frenzy of distorted guitar and improvised drums that create walls of psychedelic noise. originally released in 1973its sound is unparalled for its time and preceeds its closest kin, new york's no-wave explosion, by a solid 5 years. a singularly unique listening experience .
they generate waves of energy through cascading feedback squall and drumbo bash and shimmer. a few tracks will start with something vaguely resembling a "groove," before they quickly deteriorate into their lonely buckeye din
