conspiracy core055

a collaboration between the two experimental artists that meant to happen. belgium's fear falls burning teams up with new zealand's birchville cat motel for 1 single long track displaying their fascination for the metallic and slow expanding drone. made with guitars, amps, processing and subtle percussion, this album brought out the best in each other and is a lively, pulsating, moody and intense drone manifest.

our love will destroy the world "i hate even numbers" lp
(limited edition of 400)

release date: october 15, 2010

parallel universes mangle and mash into a superheated cloud of galactic debris and non-recyclable plastic. after a slew of genre-confounding 7" releases, our love will destroy the world unravels his own history of nearly everything in this, the mere third full length offering under his world destroying moniker. smearing the already dotty line between twinkle-toed rave music and excoriating drone cacophony, "i hate even numbers" weighs in like a three-legged gargantuan in a one-man morris dance. blessed with a deep conviction that 'nowhere' is somewhere definitely worth going to, crippled, hobbling, clunkbeats and bubblepulses contest every frequency to the death underscored (overscored?) by mega-electrified guitar tuning exercises, shattering a passage to a brand new india. everything louder than everything else, everything dissolving in the powerful acid of the sound next to it a frybrained avalanche of audio m&ms. profound, elevating, and mercilessly, relentlessly up!

our love will destroy the world is the new one-man project by new zealander campbell kneale after disbanding birchville cat motel. in the past kneale has released albums on ecstatic peace, corpus hermeticum, last visible dog, conspiracy and his own celebrate psi phenomena label. he has colllaborated with lee ranaldo, neil campbell, bruce russel, john olson (wolf eyes), yellow swans, has toured throughout japan, europe, america and australia and also records und the names black boned angel and ming.

"i hate even numbers" is the 2nd lp by this new project for the dekorder label (his 3rd altogether) after last year's monolithic "stillborn plague angels" album.

february 2009 release ; debut full-length from this new, post-bcm project from campbell kneale ...

while the prior dirty knobby single was full of looping idm beats, they’re nowhere to be found here ; instead the familiar mix of late-period birchville’s crushing drones & the scorched-earth peal of black boned angel’s harsh guitar walls is in effect, yielding inarguably the harshest set of pieces i’ve heard from campbell yet, akin to a more orchestrated take on hototogisu’s approach ...

a marked improvement from the aforementioned single, one of of the best sides i’ve heard from cambpell in recent times ...

stillborn plague angels
lp

the gates of birchville cat motel crack, creak wide, and crash, unleashing a gush of soul-fried bleakness and love-damage stained with a defiantly metallic pose. that’s "metallic... as in, has the surface qualities of metal" not "metal... as in, has the surface qualities of metallica"... step back you fucking freaks.

although the broken bricks of bcm are still plain to see amid the burning wreck and ruin, 'stillborn plague angels' represents the first fully formed sentence in a new chapter of campbell kneale's ongoing tome of star-spangled, psychedelic, noise-om. cholesterol-shaving guitar peeks over the trench to survey an adrenalised landscape of endless roaring catastrophy... everything louder than everything else!

our love will destroy the world is the new one-man project by new zealander campbell kneale after disbanding birchville cat motel. in the past kneale has released albums on ecstatic peace, corpus hermeticum, last visible dog, conspiracy and his own celebrate psi phenomena label. he has colllaborated with lee ranaldo, neil campbell, bruce russel, john olson (wolf eyes), yellow swans, has toured throughout japan, europe, america and australia and also records und the names black boned angel and ming.

  • polished.glass.autobahn

  • galactic.masada
january 2009 release ; beguilingfunkyidm single from this new campbell kneale project ...

no, i’m not kidding (listen to the sound-sample for the intro to “polished.glass.autobahn” - it’s 1999 / morr music all over again !!!) ... that said, of course campbell has his own spin on things, and in fact the gated electric guitar-wash & acoustic strumming (can anyone say “folktronica” - jesus it hurts to even type that) that interrupt things side-way through are a nice touch ...

the b-side fares a little better, again, mining similar territory as neil campbell’s astral social club project (my theory is that they’re slowly becoming each other) with a church organ drone buried amidst a flurry of mutating synthesized textures & delay lines ... just gorgeous.

debut single of the new project by campbell kneale (birchville cat motel / black boned angel). campbell says “shoot. the goddamn funkiest noise record ever? like a bop-off between rudolph grey and terminator x. grinding psychedirgecore plastered over ghastly electrosplatter and ambivalent fake-americana strummage. and that’s just side one! side two grovels in halls of gravel, blurring the line between this world and the next... like aldous huxley writing a book about how he lost his marbles whilst listening to hawkwind. like, like, like...everybodydancenow!)” sure to pack the dance floors in hades.

birchville cat motel / yellow swansbirchville cat motel & yellow swans” compact disc

  • terminal saints (27:27)
  • marble carcass (21:17)
important press release...
yellow swans & birchville cat motel is the the first collaboration between these two underground phenomenons. both groups have emassed sturdy back catalogs and a great deal of critical acclaim. this collaboration was recorded entirely in new zealand both live and in the studio.

late 2005, yellow swans were blessed with the opportunity to tour austrailia. as an added bonus, they were able to scam a free week and a half long layover in new zealand, so they could check out the mythic noisescape of their teenagedom. they booked a few shows (three or four before they got there, but ended up playing seven) and most of those were set up by mr. birchville cat motel, president of lower hutt who they ended up collaborating with live.

before the yellow swans headed to dunedin (where pete swanson had a birthday party at the arc cafe) they were set to play a late show at a club. in walks campbell kneale (birchville cat motel) wearing an iron maiden shirt and carrying a guitar that had a destroyed cookie tin wedged under the strings. after some opening groups it's time for the yellow swans/birchville cat motel jam and then pete suggests they “ease into it.” campbell looks bummed at this suggestion when suddenly gabe suggests that just go for it. campbell looks happy at that suggestion so they did and clearly it worked out pretty well because that's track two. track one is a studio collaboration recorded at celebrate psi phenomenon.

kr009 bark haze / our love will destroy the world split 7”

campbell kneale moves ever closer to the glistening, levitation altar, with backwards bliss-shimmer, spooked chant and analogue squawk and squeal, kaleidoscoping around triumphant snare punctuation. bark haze hit back with focused power-drone guitar duelling from the heart of the bong, smoking out into tunnel-visoned, crumbled-amp chunder.

birchville cat motelgunpowder temple of heaven” compact disc

  • gunpowder temple of heaven (40:49)
january 2008 release ; swelling, emo-heavy vibes from campbell kneale, akin to the more laminar tracks from neil campbell (ha ! neil campbell / campbell kneale ; they should do an album together ... oh wait, they already did ; carry on) ‘s recent astral social club output (a stray kick drum, set on “power ballad” thumps every couple of seconds ; the only element interrupting the rising/cycling organ/string-synth progression) ...

quite a lovely piece, not something i would have ascribed to campbell prior to witnessing his new year’s eve 2007 set (materials culled largely from the mellow piece in question herein, albeit at monstrous volume) ; perfect for deep listening ...

birchville cat motel: gunpowder temple of heaven

pica004. cd. released winter 2008.

birchville cat motel is the project of new zealander campbell kneale, who has from his base in lower hutt since the mid 90-ies established himself as the leading voice of this generation of nz sound artists. gunpowder temple of heaven is a new highlight in his extensive discography. a single 40 minute long-form piece that keeps building and unfolding; heaven for drone-noise enthustiasts.

the cd comes with a booklet with a complete birchville discography as well as liner-notes by bruce russell.

from the liner notes of bruce russell (the dead c):

"i've been listening to the music of campbell kneale for more than a decade now. recently i've been listening with a sense of increasing admiration as he stacks up monumental sound slabs in an architecture of audition - building a lofty tower of sound. always a dedicated worker at whatever he does, campbell had mastered the detailed work required to place many sounds accurately across each another. often this kind of 'more is more' strategy backfires into murky sludge, where the increasing layers merely obscure each other. on the contrary, the more bcm puts into a piece, the more you hear coming out."

touch (uk) #to:68 cd

rosy parlanejessamine” compact disc

  • part one (13:13)
  • part two (16:29)
  • part three (19:08)
november 2006 release from rosy parlane - i’ve been eagerly awaiting this moment for many years now as rosy’s first album “iris” has become something of a high watermark in contemporary digital-music circles, and is among my favorite albums of the last 5-odd years - he most certainly does not disappoint with this opus...
touch press release...

touch # to:68
3 tracks – cd only
48:42

photography & design: jon wozencroft

rosy parlane [nz]'s previous album for touch, 'iris' [2004] was hailed as a masterpiece by the red hot chilli peppers guitarist, john frusciante, who wrote: "...it’s such an incredible, beautiful energy inside of it that to me, it sounds like listening to a great pop record or a great rock record or a great classical record or whatever."

jim haynes in the wire wrote: "jon wozencroft's impeccable photography and design packages rosy parlane's 'iris' inside a predominantly blue package, inextricably linking the music to the emotional resonance of the colour... he flushes his soundfields with cascades of digital fragments which he separates into two distinct compositional categories. on the one hand, parlane stretches sounds from guitar, piano and organ into unrecognisable drones that swell into dense layerings, every once in a while coalescing into fluttering half-melodies. on the other, he emphasises the textural qualities of those digital fragments, simulating the natural acoustics of ice crackling from trees in winter or the gentle patter of rain on a windowsill. when fusing these together by placing the textures against the backdrop of the drone, parlane effectively builds pointillist sound environments with a profoundly human melancholia."

with 'jessamine', rosy develops these themes, and continues to incorporate new musical elements from unconventional as well as orchestral instrumentation. to him, everything is an instrument: from household objects to nature sounds, thus placing him firmly at the centre of the avant-garde. but it is the human element, as with all touch artists, which gives his work such a distinctive sound. ranging from ambient to noise, he gives full rein to textures of living; to start, languid and mournful; later harsh and assertive.

'jessamine' is a magnificent follow-up to a classic touch debut.

need for a crossing: a new new zealand vol. i

trapped in splendid isolation on the verdant backside of the planet, the new zealand scene has evolved into as vivid and unique a beast as any you're likely to hear. thanks to recent expeditions, you can now enjoy its multifarious tweets and warbles for yourself, as the intrepid folks at xeric present need for a crossing: a new new zealand, an introduction to the latest generation of antipodal soundsmiths.

birchville cat motel takes the lead with an epic blast in the cale/conrad/sabbath vein, while the gentler ruminations of stefan neville illuminate both pumice and blowfly saint. brief appearances by leighton craig and gfrenzy are, in turn, reverential and shambolic. while making nods to both greek rembetika and raw americana, greg malcolm is the model of multi-dexterity, playing three guitars simultaneously (he uses his feet). antony milton lends a gritty and aggressive bit of soundscaping, which segues into the collection's soaring, cloud-busting finale by the outstanding peter wright.

it's a strange and exotic menagerie, and a welcome chance for the rest of us to hear what's happening in the new new zealand. exquisitely packaged with a 24-page book monographing the new zealand streets and roads of yesteryear.
