ace029: evan caminiti "psychic mud shrine" cd

for my money, barn owl is the best new band to emerge in the last five years. their trajectory has been meteoric, progressing musically and conceptually in leaps and bounds. i've been thrilled to be there from the beginning, watching and listening in awe as the duo of jon porras and evan caminiti have carved out an impressive niche of their own. heavy doses of guitar savagery and tribal essence have them firmly planted at the top of the mountain. so it makes sense to deconstruct the duo and present each as a solo entity, soaring on their own.

in a perfect world, evan caminiti would be a guitar god worshipped by hordes of spike-wearing metalheads. seriously. caminiti's newest solo offering (and first large-scale release) is a big, smoldering mass of guitar sacrifices. we're deep down in the hollows now. "psychic mud shrine" is epic in every way. thick, massive walls of lava-flow guitars bow down at an altar of excess. caminiti creates jagged drones like no other. distorted guitars sound simultaneously tortured and energized like it's unsure if this hell on earth brings pleasure or pain. it's just so fucking massive. with titles like "melting temple/plumes of babylon," you know what direction this is heading and it's a train you don't want to miss.

"psychic mud shrine" is a powerful statement from an artist coming into his own. over the course of four sprawling masterpieces, you'll be entranced and exalted. this album rings out from the deep valleys carved straight to the fucking core.

edition of 500 in gatefold jackets with all art designed by caminiti.

gärden söundblack summit” long playing record

  • forbidden paradise
  • beast of burden

  • hidden origin
  • obsidian sky
october 2010 release ; debut release from this new aggregate, featuring 2/2’s of barn owl & eternal tapestry’s dewey mahood & jed bindeman ...

the curious use of umlauts would lead one to believe that the intended destination is gårdet ca. 1970, but the two main pieces are definitely rooted in seattle ca. 1991 ; monolithic guitar bloom, caveman drums and the like ... that said, the two “opener” pieces show a lighter touch, with some nice, snaking, modal guitar interplay amidst jed’s subtle malletings ...

digiv028: gärden sound "black summit lp

when it comes to blown-out psychedelia, the first current band i want to hear is eternal tapestry. when it comes to desolate desert blues, that band is barn owl. those are two pretty potent names in the world of experimental music right now so when 4/5 of them join up for some portland sessions, that's good news for us all. gärden sound is the quartet of dewey mahood and jed bindeman of eternal tapestry (as well as plankton wat & heavy winged, respectively) and jon porras and evan caminiti of barn owl. "black summit" is their first charcoal-lined foray into the deep and if you can't get lost in this haze, there's not much hope.

immediately evident is the incredible restraint shown by all four players. they're not being timid or trying to feel each other out, but there's an obvious level of comfort and understanding between each. with three guitars and bindeman's trademark drumming, it would be easy to drown everything in full-on sludge but gärden sound are too damn good to play that game. opener, "forbidden paradise," sets the scene. methodical guitar works lull the listener into a solemn state of comfort while bindeman adds to the hypnosis with tribal-infused narcotic rhythms. the build-up is slow but gets you ready for the knock-down blasts of "beast of burden." heavy stomp and zoned-out, smoked-out guitar riffs that blow the roof to oblivion. this is music that needs to be played as loud as you can stand it.

"hidden origin" calms things back down, contemplating the next move while finding its way through the blackened labryinth concocted by porras, caminiti and mahood. each guitarist finds his own path as they lead each other to the prize. the 14-minute closer, "obsidian sky," brings everything home. sprawling riffage like a dense forest of apocalyptic crumble. desolation takes hold as the molasses drones take shape and form themselves into an unpassable mountain of debris. it's mind-bending and cathartic; a sonic temple crushed to ash so it can rise again. gärden sound prove worthy opponents, ably standing on their own and stomping out their own trail toward the stars.

mastered by james plotkin. vinyl only edition of 400 copies w/ original cover art by evan caminiti.

root strata (usa) #rs-44 cd

barn owlthe conjurer” compact disc

  • into the red horizon (5:11)
  • across the deserts of ash (16:59)
  • procession of golden bones (3:51)
  • ancient of days (14:42)
april 2010 release ; cd version of the now o/pbreakthrough” lp from chosen sons barn owl ...

excellent summoning of darkened light from this bay-area duo, hot on the heels of several well-received titles on root strata, blackest rainbow, not not fun, their own electric totem, and digitalis / foxglove ...

taking their cue(s, at least in part) from earth’s recent “doom americana” phase, there’s plenty in the way of slow, lumbering rhythms, played on heavily tremelo’ed guitar(s) and plodding drum-kit ; but for every measure of cinematic/pentatonic glory, there’s an equal dose of popol-vuh (hell, even organum, or artemiev at that) -esque flute & vocal droning that tempers the “power triocathars into something much more meditative ... highly recommended !!!

barn owl
"the conjurer"

rs-45
cd
edition of 1000

the conjurer is the latest offering by bay area duo barn owl. this new long player finds evan caminiti & jon porras finally (by way of an actual recording studio) documenting something that is a bit closer to their very heavy live sets, with expanded peaks of white light distortion and enormous valleys of bottom end. each side opens with a brief funeral dirge to set the mood, a precession of bare bones drum beats and bell like guitar statements that bridge the gap to the wider open spaces of the almost side long 'across the desert of ash' and 'ancient of days''.

it may seem obvious, or even a little overwrought, but it has to be said that these guys really do evoke all kinds of cinematic drama with their music. apocalyptic westerns, bleak melodramas, mother nature fever dreams, it all seems to come to mind amid the evening guitar passages, incantations, flute tones, and finally, the solo piano that emerges lost among the electric mayhem to close the album. considering the amount of terrain, the conjurer is far from being scattered or rushed sounding. the record as a whole moves at a crafted even rhythm, slowly merging from one scene of violence to the next of almost silent recovery, then back up the mountain again.

evan caminiti
west winds
tlr-082

release date: july 27, 2010

evan caminiti is a guitarist full of big ideas and even bigger sounds. currently known as one-half of the san francisco bay area avant droners barn owl, caminiti has spent a great deal of time the past few years playing and recording gorgeous solo explorations focused primarily on the guitar, but, when need be, accented by additional instrumentation. following several prior releases, caminiti’s abilities have been honed to the razor sharp point of his new lp, west winds. three lobed recordings is proud to present this album, caminiti’s most mature and meditative to date.

west winds is a discourse on solitude and cosmic exploration set primarily to an open tuned guitar. it is a logical successor to caminiti’s strong, large(r) scale solo debut, psychic mud shrine (digitalis, 2009) and calls to mind roy montgomery, “hex”-era earth and popul vuh. the album is the result of caminiti’s six-month long focus on each song’s form and musical composition. over that span of time, caminiti assembled and came to know each song intimately, constructing a series of strong structural bases. that knowledge permitted him to record the final takes accentuated by numerous potent improvisational flourishes as heard on west winds. this long-form approach of adding chaotic, off-the-cuff elements to such long-crafted tracks is basically the opposite approach to that which is used within the context of barn owl. through its contemplative tone, west winds is the perfect soundtrack to your next night alone in the literal or figurative desert.

the album opens with the bold and transcendent “night of the archon.” caminiti coaxes a sustained wash of shimmering tones from his guitar that conjure the impression of heat illusions appearing just over the horizon on a long, straight, and otherwise abandoned road in the dead heat of summer. hazy and dreamlike, “night…” magically helps the listener lose track of time and space, and its close to nine-minute running time seems like mere moments slipping through the hourglass. once fully established, this hypnotic tone and mood is so pervasive throughout west winds - from the piano accents that punctuate “westward sun” to the desolate and lonely echoes of “dust” – that the listener certainly does not have to listen too hard to tell that caminiti has generated a full and complete thematic exploration that is undoubtedly cut from whole cloth. “black desert blooming” soundly closes the album in a din of bowed guitar that slowly gives way to sparse, understated notes. evan caminiti’s west winds is a bold and cohesive statement from a young artist already capable of recording greatness.
