p & c doubtmusic

this is the masterpiece of 2cds, splitting the music into improvisation (momentary composition) and / or composition.

disc 1 is the improvised music by axel, ino, imai. guitar sound of imai is hot and tingling, ino plays careful his choice pizzicato and arco exquisitely, and axel's original sound bring 'out' into their music. their atmosphere of music is special one, cannot be similar from every music.

disc 2 consists of all axel's composition. he play several tunes also on "die enttauschung" (with rudi mahall, etc) but every tunes' structure is very vivid. note drum playing by nori, who is invited to play by axel !

if jazz is survive in present day, this work is the real contemporary "jazz" today.

one of the more approachable entries into otomo’s vast, vast canon; were it not for sachiko’s incessant 8-16k tweetering throughout, i could almost mistake some of this for 60s/70s film music; which is to say the band stay inside the reigns for the majority of the session(s)...

keith rowe / axel dörner / franz hautzingera view from the window” compact disc

  • magenta / black (36:25)
  • cadmium yellow / turquoise (21:09)
erstwhile press release...
keith rowe - guitar, electronics
axel dörner - slide trumpet
franz hautzinger - quartertone trumpet

trumpeters axel dörner and franz hautzinger transcend many of the aesthetic and geographical factions that have evolved over four decades of european free improv, contributing their gorgeous tones to a wide variety of contexts. on a view from the window, they join forces with the intensely focused keith rowe, one of the scene's founding fathers, and explore the abstract limits of their respective palettes.

rowe's history should be familiar to anyone following this area of music. having mostly performed within amm until the late nineties, he's since been involved in a wide range of projects, including a slew of the most prominent erstwhile releases. he's the cornerstone musician for the label, and is co-curating the upcoming amplify festival in cologne and berlin, amplify 2004: addition.

dörner hails from cologne, and has been living in berlin since 1994. he is one of the busiest musicians in the european improv scene, working in projects ranging from free improv ensembles like the territory band and the electrics to more abstract ensembles such as phosphor and lines. he recently put out a superb trio disc on creative sources with boris baltschun and kai fagaschinski. this is his second project for erstwhile, following the self-titled duos with kevin drumm, released in 2001.

hautzinger, based in vienna, has recorded numerous projects for grob, including the solo gomberg, a duo with derek bailey, and absinth (a quartet with werner dafeldecker, sachiko m, and john tilbury). he has worked with an impressive diversity of musicians, including gil evans, john cale, christian fennesz, otomo yoshihide, butch morris, phill niblock, lou reed, and the temptations. this is his first project for erstwhile.

a view from the window was recorded in a single day in vienna in november 2003 by christoph amann, superbly as always. photojournalist yuko zama was in attendance for the sessions, and became drawn to the glimpse of sky visible through one of the studio's windows. she took dozens of pictures from different angles, and her fascination inspired rowe to title the record after the cardew quote (see below), and to paint a more "optimistic" version of one of her photos for the front cover. a view from the window captures these three musicians paring their signature sounds down to their essences, with the occasional plaintive trumpet cry or subtle radio snippet emerging from the delicate intertwining.

"...it is impossible to record with any fidelity a kind of music that is actually derived from the room in which it is taking place - its size, shape, acoustical properties, even the view from the window..." - cornelius cardew, towards an ethic of improvisation.

mika vainio / kevin drumm / axel dörner / lucio capecevenexia” long playing record

  • venexia (1) (19:51)

  • venexia (2) (22:58)
june 2012 release ; ... a 2008 gig featuring an impressivedouble duo” lineup of mika vainio & lucio capece ... met onstage by kevin drumm & axel dörner ...

... those (perhaps, rightly so) expecting a pileup wherin kevin & mika’s electronics all but dominate the entire audible domain, edging out axel & lucio’s acoustic sources will be ... perhaps relieved to hear all four holding their relative spectral ground ; the music is anything but a pileup of full-on bleating ... in fact it’s quite iterative & dynamic throughout (one need only listen to the extended section highlighted via the sound-sample) ...
pan press release...

mika vainio / kevin drumm / axel dörner / lucio capece 'venexia' (pan 28)

the original idea of this project was to allow musicians from different scenes (but who shared common ideas) to work together. in this case, a development of two pre existent duos.

quite often musicians from different sonic languages can be seen being put together, trying to push the artists to develop unexpected works. vainio, drumm, dörner and capece have mainly strong points in common, that have been executed in different contexts. the music map is generally divided into categories that are determined by it's most evident and often banal elements; if it has beats or not, if it is quiet or loud, if it has raw material or a carefully worked aesthetic. these four musicians have been working using all the previous elements, but these elements did not determine the music, they were used at the service of deeper ideas related to time and perception. how the sound of our environment can become music, how can music be attractive without telling a story, the work of sound in it's extreme: noise, granular and delicate, digital, electronic, instrumental extended techniques, preparations.

kevin drumm and axel dörner started working together in the late 90's as part of a trio with paul lovens, as a duo they released an influential album on erstwhile records. vainio and drumm met in 2005 in australia, both as part of the touring festival what is music?. even if both musicians declared to have a great time touring in australia, they did never played together. drumm's and vainio's music is often compared by critics. capece has released a duo cd on l'innomable label with axel dörner and a trio one with dörner and tubist robin hayward on azul discográfica label from new york. dörner and capece worked in several projects together, including a residence with keith rowe working on " treatise" by cornelius cardew. mika vainio and lucio capece have released together the album "trahnie". an album they worked for three years on, and also did several concerts as a duo.

in may 2008 the quartet made a 6 days residency and concert at vooruit, in gent, followed by a 5 concert european tour, that took them to venice. in 2011 the group played at konfrontationen festival in austria. in the meanwhile capece and vainio have been part of the vladislav delay quartet. capece has played, and toured with kevin drumm in a trio with radu malfatti and dörner has played with drumm in a trio with paul lovens, at the meteo festival, in france. the recording in venice is a multitrack one. it was mixed by capece with minimal edits, basically panning and volume adjustments.

the lp is mastered and cut by rashad becker at d&m, pressed on 140g vinyl and comes in a poly-lined inner sleeve. it is packaged in a pro-press color jacket which itself is housed in a silkscreened pvc sleeve with photos by traianos pakioufakis & artwork by kathryn politis & bill kouligas.

december 2011 release ; ... by far the most ambitious project pan’s bill kouligas has taken on (thusfar ... although i hear there’s a marginal consort 4xlp in the works !?!?) is this sprawling, triple-disc set of recordings centered around saxophonist andre vida ...

... running the gamut from in-situ solo & duo improvisations (there’s a representative run in the sound-sample there to your left) to noisy, synth-based freakouts & rather tumultuous group-mind workouts (many featuring his former mentor / teacher anthony braxton ... but also folks like axel dörner, tim barnes, matt valentine, and rashad becker) it’s clear that andre’s something of a renaissance man ...

... comes in a “pan lp-style” mini screen-printed outer-jacket with a triple-disc pack inside coated in imagery & documentation ; very cool set ...
pan press release...

andre vida 'brud: volumes i-iii' (pan 20)

brud is a three volume compilation of recordings from 1995 to 2011 by andre vida, morphing seamlessly between a sense of total irreverence and the sublime. his spontaneous compositions and notated works are the angled mirrored counterparts of a transient saxophone driven performance language, drawing on elements of 1970s performance art, new music, improvisation cult, folk and pop hybrids, channeling them into asymmetrical tunes of feral beauty.

brud traces the development of vida's wayward language through 16 years of copious ruminations. the three delightfully polymorphic perverse discs unite sparkling solo sax, pieces for cello and woodwind sextet, synth / concrete electronic music, nocturnal improvisations, rare 90's new york free jazz compositions, and the kreuzberg suite — a distilled culmination of a hundred nights of berlin mayhem into ecstatic swinging lyricism. both solo works and as well as various collaborations with anthony braxton, rashad becker, axel dörner, matt "mv" valentine, tim barnes, helen rush, olaf rupp, clare cooper, clayton thomas, brandon evans, elisabeth king, steve heather and many more.

andre vida is a hungarian american saxophonist, composer and lyricist living in berlin. more downtown cheeky grin than mere caveman smile, he is cosmically notorious for continuing the rahsaan roland kirk one man horn section legacy with hydra headed style. he has been at the forefront of several major developments in experimental music, being mainly in anthony braxton’s original ghost trance ensemble, as founding member of new york collective the ctia, subsequent ‘freak folk’ groups such as the tower recordings, and his extensive collaborations with electronic music visionaries jamie lidell, tim exile and kevin blechdom, elton john, gonzales, cecil taylor, ornette coleman to name but a few, sewing up some heavy threads in downtown sax patchwork refracted through a borgesian lens.

the 3xcd is a limited edition of 1000 copies, and is packaged in a pro-press digisleeve jacket which itself is housed in a one-tone silk screened pvc sleeve with artwork by andre vida and bill kouligas.
