astrolive at muryoku muzen temple” long playing record

  • live at muryoku muzen temple (1)

  • live at muryoku muzen temple (2)
july 2008 release ; vinyl-only companion volume to the “the echo at the purple dawn” disc, recorded at the titular temple (wanted to find more about it ; could only find references to the lp itself ... hmm ...)
important press release...
astro - live at muryoku muzen temple - lp
imprec198 - lp

live at muryoku muzen temple is limited to 500 copies. this is the companion release to the astro cd titled the echo at the purple dawn being released at the same time on important records. astro, of course, is the analog/space project of hiroshi hasegawa of the legendary japanese group c.c.c.c. this limited vinyl only release was created using ring modulator and vocals which are rare these days in astro recordings. cover art designed by important.

astro is hiroshi hasegawa’s solo project. he is a founding member of the japanese noise group c.c.c. born in 1963, hasegawa began his improvisation with his voice and drums. in 1990, he made the group c.c.c.c. around the concept of improvised mass-noise with a very loud sound. members included mayuko hino, ryuichi nagakubo, fumio kosakai.

hasegawa began his solo unit astro with analog synthesizers in 1993 and continued playing in c.c.c.c. though c.c.c.c. is no more, hasegawa has continued with astro and his numerous collaborations drifting between dreamy spaced out bliss and full on waterfalls of beautiful noise.

astromerolive in san francisco” long playing record

  • live in san fransisco (19:35)

  • the dust coma (21:05)
july 2009 release ; blistering pair of synth / electronic burners from damion romero & hiroshiastrohasegawa ...

while the a-side piece (recorded at grux’ now-legendary “godwaffle noise pancakes” series in march of 2006 ; it’s worth noting that this does not appear on either of the astromero cd sets) is a fine, fine blurt of claustrophobic oscillator scraggle, it’s the b-side “studio cut that does it for me, unleashing a furious wall of damion’s bottom-heavy murk crossing over into hiroshi’s keening synthi / echo warble ...

these guys have never sounded better ; highly recommended !!!

41 astromero 'live in san francisco' lp

astromero is the psychedelic synth / noise project of japanese pioneer hiroshi hasegawa (astro, cccc), and la's damion romero (speculum fight). side a is a live show in san francisco, a total scorcher with an immense level of energy where shifting walls of synthetic sound produced by hasegawa are complemented by the signature rumbling low end frequencies coming from damion's custom electronics. side b is a new studio track, full of brain melting tones and showing the more compositional side of this sick ongoing collaboration.

limited to 350.

  • brooklyn march 19, 2006 • live at no fun fest (33:52)
june 2008 release ; triple-disc set (in a lovely double-wide jewel case) offering the complete recordings made by damion romero & hiroshi hasegawa during their march 2006 jaunt from los angeles out east to brooklyn (by way of san francisco / oakland) for the no-fun fest ...

this one gets a little closer to harsh noise realms than the s/t debut, for the greater part these are room recordings of constantly flitting upper & extreme low-end wave-shapes - the architecture of the space(s) plays a large part in the overall sound (listen to the sound-sample ; the hook must have been absolutely buzzing from the rafters on down) ...

a totemic set, no doubt ; almost too much to take in all at once !!! mms’ copies come directly from damion’s “merch table” bin, as such i can put this out at an extremely reasonable price ... highly recommended !!!

astro / damion romeroastromero” double compact disc set

  • spectral vision (18:14)
  • live on romaine 1996 (27:20)
  • astral fight (31:50)

  • live in tokyo 2002 (31:46)
june 2005 release ; double-disc set (in a metal box, no less) covering the first round of collaborations & live recordings by the duo of hiroshiastrohasegawa (of c.c.c.c. fame) and damionspeculum fightromero, ranging from their debut in japan during summer 1995 through a joint tokyo concert, summer 2002 ...

contrary to what you might imagine, this isn’t a pure synth-noise blowout ; the pair delve into headier zones (including a long section that reminds me of that first philus sahkö 12” - listen to the sound-sample) - but yes, of course there’s some real full-on sand-blasting here, c/o the pair’s vcs3 / paia lineup ...

as above, these copies come directly from damion’s stash ; as such mms can off such an attractive price on this classic set ...

ju-jikan: 10 hours of sound from japan
23f/sfm 901, double compact disc set

in 2001, the san francisco sound-arts organization 23five and the san francisco museum of modern art co- presented ju-jikan — a ten hour ‘listening event’ documenting the past 50 years of japanese experimental music. the curators of ju-jikan; atau tanaka, ryoji ikeda, and shunichiro okada did not intend their exhibition to be a comprehensive encyclopedia of japanese experimentation; rather they sought “to trace the complex web of sonic style that constitutes the current japenese musical landscape.” tanaka, whose lucid writings are found within ju-jikan’s liner notes, takes great care in describing the contradictions and unspoken connections that linger not just within the niches of japanese audio experimentation but also throughout all of japanese culture. just as technology and electronics are the lone assimilating factors within the broad scope of ju-jikan, these same tools also gave the possibility for separation from the west and from each other to create a wealth of new languages.

while the ten hour ‘listening event’ at sfmoma spanned 5 decades of historical recordings, the double cd centers upon the last decade, as a means to publish previously unreleased work from many of featured artists. all of the artists with ju-jikan (both the 2cd and the sfmoma listening event) draw from the recombinant power of electronic synthesis and the juxtaposition of disparate styles; which together have become a standard if elusively-defined musical vocabulary for japanese music. tanaka, ikeda, and okada offered convenient catagories (computer music, anti-academic movements, noise, anti-pop permutations, ambient fields, after improvised music, etc.) as ports of entry; however, they point out that many japanese experimental artists refuse to paint themselves into an aesthetic corner. ju-jikan’s cd companion features compositions from tamami toro, pain jerk, yasunao tone, nerve net noise, otomo yoshihide, atau tanaka, i.d., masonna, kozo inada, ichiro nodaira, hanatarash, yuji takahashi, ryoji ikeda, merzbow, kazuo uehara, astro, and testuo furudate.

founded in 1993, 23five incorporated is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the development and increased awareness of sound works in the public arena, and to the support and education of artists working with and discussing the medium of sound. for the past 14 years, 23five incorporated has remained at the forefront in bringing the most adventurous elements of sound art to the san francisco bay area. 23five has served as an important benefactor to artists such as john duncan, christina kubisch, francisco lopez, achim wollscheid, matt heckert, zbigniew karkowski, atau tanaka, and many more.
