moebius + tietchens

lp (180g vinyl) plus cd
release date: june 29th, 2012

with this album, dieter moebius and asmus tietchens fulfill a promise that they made 35 years ago. that is, in 1976, when the five musicians of liliental completed the recordings for their eponymous album (released 1978) and again scattered to the winds, moebius called out to tietchens from the already moving car: "we have to make a record together sometime." at least that is the report of an ear-witness. whether or not it's true ... in any case, both decided in 2011 to record the album which is now to be released.

moebius (cluster, harmonia), since the early years of cluster, has neither lost his curiosity nor his eagerness for experimentation. on the contrary: he has downright cultivated them. tietchens is not only a true aficionado of the cluster's music and friend of the duo, but has also released countless albums of electronic music and musique concrète since the 1980's – like cluster, initially on sky records – then later only in the field of industrial and abstract music. their album may come from out of the blue, but the large amount of overlap in the music of both artists made it a forgone conclusion to finally make good on the aforementioned promise.

thirteen pieces carries the album. these are thirteen ideas that could hardly be heterogeneous – no two pieces are similar. moebius and tietchens show us what they are capable of together. from the rough sketch to densely gripping rhythms, one can clearly hear just what these two old masters of electronic music have in their arsenals. this is not a result of the routine that comes with so many years of experience, nor a thin portion of tired old recipes for success. other than for a few faint echoes of a bygone era (perhaps as a sentimental reminder), “moebius+tietchens“ is an album that could only emerge from the here and now. it is contemporary, new music.

unfortunately, this time there was no ear-witness as moebius and tietchens said goodbye after finishing these recordings. so we do not know if they made a new agreement similar to the one from 35 years ago. let's hope so.

camera lucida
line_030 dvd

line is proud to announce the release of its first dvd, camera lucida. the project by russian/american installation and video artists, evelina domnitch and dmitry gelfand and developed in collaboration with scientific laboratories in japan, germany, russia and belgium.

camera lucida (chamber of light or lucidity) is a 3-dimensional sonic observatory that directly transforms sound into light by employing a phenomenon known as sonoluminescence: ultrasound, propagating within a liquid, triggers the formation and implosion of micro-bubbles that reach temperatures as high as are found on the sun, and emit light in the shape of sound waves. the authors of the installation, evelina domnitch and dmitry gelfand, joined forces with multiple sound artists to create the sonochemical compositions presented on this dvd.

this dvd also contains a data partition with uncompressed high resolution audio files of all the works.

evelina domnitch and dmitry gelfand create sensory immersion environments that merge physics, chemistry and computer science with uncanny philosophical practices. having dismissed all forms of fixative and recording media, domnitch and gelfand's installations exist as ever-transforming phenomena offered for observation. because these rarely seen manifestations take place directly in front of the observer without being distorted and flattened onto a screen, they often serve to vastly extend the observer's sensory envelope.

their works have been exhibited worldwide, including shows at v2 institute for unstable media (rotterdam, netherlands), nijo castle (kyoto, japan), museum of dreams (st. petersburg, russia), i-20 gallery (new york, usa), die schachtel (milan, italy) and tesla (berlin, germany).

"camera lucida is a highly introspective immersive spatial art work creating a fleeting ephemeral materiality by intersecting ultrasound with hyperlight... in essence the creation of a sonic aurora. domnitch and gelfand's piece rejects any possibility to be fixed in space and time, but rather offers up the very definition of an unstable work of art, existing entirely for and within the perceptive realm of the viewer." - stephen kovats, director of transmediale 2008

due to the detailed and subtle visual nature of this work and phenomenon the artists have chosen to use pal over ntsc encoding to maintain the maximum resolution possible for the movie and sound files. this dvd is region free and can be played on any computer dvd drive. no region switching is necessary for television screen viewing, it can only playback on a pal or multi-system dvd player. playback in a darkened space with monitor brightness turned up is encouraged.

swill radio press release...
asmus tietchens - teils, teils swill radio 027 lp

i've been a fan of asmus tietchens' music since formen letzter hausmusik came out in 1984. that lp fascinated me and i soon began acquiring anything i could by this strange musical force. i've learned a lot from his music over the years and we became acquainted via the post in the late 90s. as it turns out, we both have an extreme fondness for cigarette smoking and an interest in max nordau's degeneration, so what better place for his first lp release in years than swill radio?

the side-long teilmenge 20 starts off the lp with an odd manic ticking that never lets up. other sounds ebb and flow throughout and the whole piece has the rare quality of sounding totally artificial and yet organic at the same time. the second side slows things down with three tracks of dripping industrial ambience. the whole lp brings to my mind an atmosphere of waiting. to quote my good friend matt krefting, "no one's music sounds both as cold and as emotional in quite the same way as the music of asmus tietchens." i couldn't agree more. excellent stuff!

korm plastics press release...
various artists - 'epitaph for john'
kp 3016 full length cd

over the course of his life john watermann worked with almost every conceivable artistic medium. in many ways, he was the epitome of the "total artist"; almost every element of his life being in some way his own artistic project.

as a young man in his native germany he worked as a photographer and documentary filmmaker, also etching, painting and writing. his experience as a youth in germany in the second world war influencing his work from then right through until his death.

following his move to australia watermann worked as jeweller, opening a number of shops in sydney with his longtime australian partner barbara heath (an accomplished jeweller in her own right) and meanwhile continued to write, paint and even sculpt. eventually, after traveling the east coast of australia in a self-built sailing boat, watermann settled in brisbane and began to produce his music.

he first released his music in 1989 in the form of the album "warmth is the fifth room". like most of his releases, the cassette appeared in a run of very few copies on his own label "nightshift", and was consequently almost impossible to find.

over the next 10 years he released numerous albums and contributed to a number of compilations, both under his own name as a solo artist, in collaboration with others (such as merzbow) and under a number of pseudonyms (including radio mull, spinal machine and total disease). also, apart from his music, in the 1990s he created an interactive cd-rom work "rose is a rose" and published the webzine "lean yellow supporting".

sadly, on april 2nd 2002 john watermann died suddenly of an infection resulting from his ongoing treatment for cancer. having in the final year of his life returned to painting and writing (alongside a burgeoning interest in cooking), he still had vast plans for future projects.

among these unfulfilled projects were plans to collaborate with frans de waard on a new release. although only preliminary discussions on the collaboration took place and watermann never completed any work towards the project, watermann's source material that was to be the basis of the work now serves as a basis for this tribute release.

despite his vast artistic output, watermann has been known almost exclusively for his music and even then his work remains largely undiscovered, perhaps for no other reason than its sheer unavailability. in many ways watermann could be considered a classic example of the artists' artist, his work influencing many far more prominent sonic alchemists. and perhaps then this release serves as a record of watermann and his influence, documenting the respect he reserved from his peers and, hopefully, introducing his work to a new audience.

- ben byrne

this cd contains the original soundwork sent to frans de waard by john watermann, reworkings thereof by asmus tietchens, ralf wehowsky, merzbow and freiband.
