esp 4053
the naked future - gigantomachia

recorded 8/8/08 in portland, or, the naked future, is a quartet of four drunken wizards conjuring up a heady brew. their diverse backgrounds – from the classical, rock and experimental realms – forge a release modernist in its construction with more than a pinch of old time alchemyesp is proud to welcome them to its circle with their first cd release, gigantomachia.

after several solo albums and many shared projects pianist thollem mcdonas lays the unrelenting line on which futures can be built. delirious percussion is provided by john niekrasz, a drummer and composer from chicago. he is a disciple of indian tabla master pandit lachu maharaj and performs with ecstatic peace recording artists poor school, syllabic-structuralists why i must be careful, and tight improv trio thicket. he has collaborated and performed with such artists as john wiese, wally shoup, john gruntfest, and doug theriault. greg skloff's "powertool" school of bass-fiddling is well refined, having graduated from such diverse groups as cloaca clock, captain's daughter, thunder! thunder! thunder! and counterfeit monsters.
from his first solo works on pine cone alley, his continuous work with the old time relijun and solo work on k records, arrington de dionyso has followed a trajectory to land him here, squarely in the naked future, handling the duties of conductor and bass clarinet.

arrington de dionyso
i see beyond the black sun lp

light passes through a prism and fractures to create a rainbow effect; the color spectrum breaks off from every angle. it appears as if the colors divide themselves, but in reality they bleed in together – overlapping and mingling. it is within this closely inspected area of bleeding and mingling that arrington de dionyso creates his latest solo work i see beyond the black sun [klp200].

de dionyso explores tones in terms of specific individual sounds, much like each minute shift of color across the spectrum. interchanging bass clarinet and throat-singing with homemade instruments used as vocal modifiers, i see beyond the black sun is less the apocalyptic doom of his ramshackle post-punk group old time relijun, but instead a raga influenced anthropological meditation. locating the tones between tones and the overtones within overtones – seeing beyond the black sun.

i see beyond the black sun pushes de dionyso's previous solo album breath of fire (2006) from a charcoal sketchbook into a technicolor landscape with more clarity, shape and definition. the album is structured with two immense bookends "aion" and "pluto in capricorn (i see beyond the black sun)." "aion" creates a rhythmic drone that specifies the rules for movements of the melodies on the album in a convergent up and down scale – continuing to climb the color spectrum ever so slowly. the gradient shift is deceptively hidden before exploding into color on the parenthetical title track. "pluto in capricorn (i see beyond the black sun)" – featuring a guest appearance by old time relijun drummer germaine baca – is the culminating cathartic conclusion, a propulsive mythical beast that combines all the previous pieces into a new separate entity where sparks begin to rise. it is the crossing over and the release.

"this music winds like an infinite snake around the vine of a central note, probing hypnotically as mr. de dionyso … inexhaustibly exhales mandalas, spirals, unknowable cuneiforms and other beguiling shapes, while simultaneously driving the pulse and drone to advance, like a slow motion tsunami, towards a shocking climax of release … crucial listening for those who want music and sound that reaches back into the center of your head." - michael gira, angels of light/swans

to have walked into k dorm at the lefty college out in olympia, wa in 1995 was to experience an immediate assault on the senses. the slap of the stench of dancers writhing: hippies and scenesters, post-nirvana poster-childs and riot grrls. and there was a good chance that at the far end of the floor bowing under the weight of bodies, the sons of uterus and fire, old time relijun, were in charismatic glory.

their first recorded output, songbook vol. i, long out of print, is brought to revival by brooklyn’s newest indie imprint, northern-spy records. over the course of 7 albums, frontman arrington de dionyso (malaikat dan singa) and upright bassist aaron hartman (girls in trouble) have established an indie rock avant-garde with elements of the naive, the spiritual, international folk sounds and shake your ass funkiness. yet, nothing since has ever captured the rawness, the train wrecks and crocodile piss recorded by diana arens at dub narcotic back in those early days.

mastered for the first time, northern-spy presents this cd digipak release, a classic from its artist, arrington de dionyso. also, for you 7" aficionados, 4 little gems from the album -- sabertooth tiger, mirror, and the 4-track versions of baby dragon and lion tamer -- are a little crown for you to own on their own. the tent’s going up, the bibles are being passed around, it’ll all burn down before the end of the night. don’t miss out.
