march 2012 release ; ... really quite lovely score to eron sheehan’s “psychological thriller about one man’s quest for redemption from his own disturbing past, set within the mysterious world of genetic engineering” composed by anthony pateras ...

knowing anthony largely as an improvising pianist / synthesist & composer of percussion works up until this point, it’s quite astonishing to hear him in full bloom here ; he speaks the language of contemporary film-sound with aplomb, channeling eliot goldenthal & cliff martinez recent, largely electronic work through a series of short queues clearly intended for various functional roles throughout the film (there’s the “bugs on my skin” one, “sudden realization”, “significant development” ... even a straight up “club scene”) ... all rendered using a palette of tuned percussion, piano, analogue synth, and a smaller chamber group ...

errors of the human body ost
2lp

release date 06.03.2012

music performed by:
anthony pateras: piano/prepared piano/organs/electronics
anna mcmichael: violin
erkki veltheim: viola
judith hamann: cello
brock imison: basson
liam kinson: clarinet
andrew young: horn

speak percussion featuring eugene ughetti & matthias schack-arnott
elizabeth welsh: additional strings
all music composed by anthony pateras

all music recorded and mixed by lachlan carrick at sing sing studios, melbourne
except xij, constructed at gold tony love's audio hell, coburg, with drums performed by max kohane and recorded by casey rice

errors of the human body is a feature film shot at the max planck institute in dresden, germany. written and directed by eron sheean, it stars michael eklund, karoline herfurth, tómas lemarquis and rik mayall, with music by editions mego stalwart anthony pateras.

in the early 2000's sheean met pateras in melbourne, and they have worked together ever since, pateras scoring 3 of sheean's short films which have all been screened a numerous festivals worldwide. errors of the human body ost is the musical results of their first feature-length collaboration.

instrumentation includes strings, winds, brass and a broad arsenal of percussion performed by melbourne's magnificent speak percussion. pateras' distinct keyboards and electronics permeate throughout, evoking the film's key themes of isolation, scientific intrigue, ambiguous ethics and hallucinatory metamorphosis.

this album covers a lot of ground, incorporating elements of alien synthesis, lush textures, odd, layered rhythms and wild production. there is even a club track with tape-delayed string orchestra, contrabassoon and cowbell. no one can decide whether they like it.

quite possibly being the only record this year incorporating arp2600 and thumb piano, it features pateras' electronic language with contemporary experiments with orchestration, glued together with a determination to test the edges of the film music medium.

vinyl edition contains liner notes by anthony pateras.

i caught a solo “laser” set of robin’s earlier this year in melbourne, and i have to say that it was one of the highlights of my entire oz/nz trip - really incredible mix of full-blown-out rectified-wave digital histrionics and a ridiculous psychedelic lightshow...

this is the mego debut (well... editions mego, excuse me...) of robin’s long-running duo with fellow malabar/mallowmar anthony pateras. just a ridiculous amount of chops on display - robin’s digital-detritus and anthony’s analogue-synth & voice-chop.

one of my favorite records right now... glad to see the mego spec still in operation after a questionable few years there!

anthony pateras & robin fox: flux compendium cd

release date: 13.01.2006

total time: 42:50

robin fox - computer, programming & controllers
anthony pateras - voice, synthi a, mixing desk, electronics & objects

recorded, mixed and mastered in melbourne, march-june 2005 by james wilkinson @ wilkinsound

all tracks written and performed by anthony pateras & robin fox

photography by sarah pirrie
installation by natasha anderson
layout by implant

ectoplasmic drool, ruptured voice, multi-temporal cash, concerti for nostrils, hyperactive excursions into comedy and violence. an aural textbook of constant change presenting a multi-dynamic evaluation of what may be possible with what we have at this point. equal parts postwar beard and modern patchnocrat, flux compendium sees two of melbourne's hairiest sons nose dive and writhe in their unique take of sonic totalism, rising out of the muck with their kaleidoscopic best. far from the lifeless plague of spacebartronica, they execute an electrified real-time homage to some of their favorite obsessions: breakneck pacing, vocal hysterics, blistering textures, bodily functions and dysfunctions. eschewing their intuitive beginnings in favor of more a concrète punk miniature aesthetic.

all music by thymolphthalein, performed live at swr2 new jazz meeting, gare du nord, basel, 15th november, 2009
cut at dubplates & mastering, berlin, december 3rd, 2010. 45 rpm

please note: due to the extreme dynamic frequency range this record was cut at 45rpm at a lower level. play loud!

design by shehab at implant, melbourne

a key ingredient in disappearing ink, thymolphthalein describes the working method of this brilliant french-australian quintet

leader anthony pateras conceived a detailed hour long structural premise for the group’s first tour in 2009, creating a masterful pastiche of richly dynamic, timbrally devastating explorations for electro-acoustic ensemble, melded by his own distinctive prepared piano and analogue electronics.

natasha anderson combines buzzing slabs of electro-acoustic sound with fractured acoustic gestures, sculpting exquisite perceptual explorations with recorders and electronics, producing a poetic and uncanny otherness.

will guthrie expertly fuses the drumkit with an array of homemade electro-acoustic devices to produce a fluid cataclysm of sonic richness, melded by his searing technical prowess and faultless ear.

jérôme noetinger is the live concréte maestro, electro-acoustically manipulating his bandmates with expert timing and breathtaking invention, scrambling proceedings with the occasional ring-modulated depth charge.

clayton thomas’ thoughtful and virtuosic prepared double bass playing has taken europe by storm since moving there from sydney in 2007 – part groove cannon, part kinetic sculpture, all parts bad bass skills.

anthony pateras / robin foxend of daze” compact disc

  • prelude
  • apollonian gasket
  • you're all answers
  • whipped silk
  • rupture
  • a simple death
  • lung butter blues
  • hyperpole
december 2008 release ; third outing by this australian electro-acoustic improv duo, after the pair’s 2003 synaesthesia-label debut (anyone heard from mark recently ? anyone ?)coagulate” & 2006’s “flux compendium(also emego) ...

this is high-aktion, bleep-heavy music ; on par with thom lehn & markus schmickler’s duo work (there’s a similar focus on hemming the analogue/digital synthesis dichotomy) yet somehow even more active ... sure, there’s the occasion electrical force-field and/or drone element, but the music rarely stays in one place for more than a second, preferring the kind of pacing that has even the most adhd-addled listener struggling to keep up ...

awesome, really, and highly recommended !!!

anthony pateras & robin fox: end of daze cd
release date: 28.12.2008
total time: 35:20

robin fox: computer, controllers, arp 2500, programming
anthony pateras: computer, doepfer a-100, voice, revox b-77

all tracks recorded at chinatown studios, brunswick.
mixed and mastered at wilkinsound, west footscray, melbourne, australia, 2008.
arp 2500 materials in "rupture" recorded at worm, rotterdam
design by clare cooper

the first cabs off the editions mego rank in 2006, pateras and fox return with their third shredding album of antipodean-blasted bliss that will get even the darkest of doomlords crawling out of their abyss of hatred, and dancing like lunatics.

end of daze is a bulletproof testament to the duo’s eight year history in the trenches of live electro-acoustic music - their messy, over-the top contact-miked beginnings now formed into a powerful and futuristic meta-language borrowing from the early electronic masters, bizarre sound poetry, vintage synth festishism, the eternal patch tweak and good old fashioned melbourne experimentalist brutality, fuelled by a poisonous love affair with sonic invention.

a combination of materials forged live on stage alongside carefully considered studio mayhem, the audio contained on this disc is their finest vein-popping blend of chaos and order to date. recorded beautifully by longtime engineer james “wilkinsound” wilkinson in melbourne, combined with some sessions from worm in rotterdam, end of daze promises a sonic range as wide as its genesis, complete with angry boy artwork courtesy of clare cooper.

limited to 500 copies.

artist: beta erko
title: i'm ok, you're ok
format: cd
cat. #: quecksilber 9
release date: 07.03.05

for everybody who is sick of everything else, beta erko is a quartet comprising dsp wizard robin fox (synaesthesia), turntable maestro martin ng (gcttcatt, mego), tri-lingual mc vulk makedonski (curse ov dialect, mush) & prepared piano freak/ producer anthony pateras (synaesthesia, tzadik).

"i’m ok, you’re ok" slices open the hip hop myth and guts it of any stylistic restraints, presenting a kaleidoscopic reconfiguration of familiar elements (beats, rhymes, samples, scratching) that are moulded into fifteen tracks of insane vocal textures, head-splitting sonics and multi-temporal rhythms.

fearless of delving anywhere within the electro-acoustic spectrum, beta erko use gargled scat singing, frenetic scratch-fests, impenetrable digital mashups, overcooked electronics and hyperactive beat boxing to create an unbelievable stylistic anomaly.

"i’m ok, you’re ok" is a rare case where four cracked minds came together to do something completely different and it worked a little too well. file under: file under: file under: file under: file under: file under: file under: file under: file under: file under: file under: file under: file under: file under.

tone 40 - oren ambarchi "intermission 2000-2008"

released: 2009
cd in digipak

artwork & design: jon wozencroft

intermission brings together a range of material oren ambarchi has contributed to compilations and limited edition vinyl releases between the years 2000 and 2008. highlights include two live recordings - an early, fragile solo guitar recording taken from a radio broadcast in 2000 and a final kiss on poisoned cheeks, his powerful 12" recorded live in vancouver in 2007 and originally released on table of the elements. additional tracks include iron waves an exclusive track in collaboration with vocalist paul duncan and intimidator featuring australian pianist/composer anthony pateras originally released on southern lord.

these are special anomalies in the ambarchi canon but nonetheless feature the hallmarks of his unique soundworld, all underpinned by his trademark deep guitar tones and meticulous attention to detail. all tracks are newly remastered, many of which are available on cd for first time.

fenneszblack sea” long playing record

  • black sea
  • perfume for winter
  • grey scale

  • glide
  • glass ceiling
  • saffron revolution
november 2008 release ; vinyl version of the fifth album from christian fennesz, here working on a couple of tracks with a few close-knit collaborators (namely, rosy parlane & anthony pateras) but mostly by himself (the album was largely recorded @ his paris flat & with christoph amann in vienna) ...

i’m sensing a stronger affinity with “the drone” here than on previous albums (which almost always offered some sort of cycling chord progressions rather than a static tonal bed) and much more present “guitar” content (straight, un-muxed playing peppers the album alongside the more familiar walls of granular haze) ...

compared to some of the more unfinished-sounding sketches of “venice,” this record is cohesive when taken as a whole, each track seems much denser (read: “heavier” - from a production standpoint at least) with tons of added digital filigree fleshing out the various frequency ranges, with much more emphasis on the lower registers ...

after repeat listenings (and despite my initial misgivings), i’m willing to concede that this is one of christian’s finest efforts ; whether you see him as a time-capsule artist or as a constant source of innovation, there’s no denying that he’s making some of the most relevant music of these troubled times ... highly recommended !!!

fennesz - black sea
touch # to:76lp [vinyl lp]

black sea is the much-anticipated new album from christian fennesz, his first since "venice" [touch # to:53, 2004]. fennesz's career has come a long way since "instrument", his debut for mego in 1995, and his first solo album "hotel paral.lel” which followed in 1998. "endless summer" [mego, 2001] brought him to a much wider audience and “venice” underlined his mastery of melody and dissonance. his songs usually embody the skilful application and manipulation of dense sonic textures with a genuine feel for the live, and real-time.

black sea features guitars that rarely sound like guitars; the instrument is transformed into an orchestra. fennesz lists the elements used to make the compositions: "acoustic and electric guitars, synthesizers, electronics, computers and live-improvising software lloopp."

on ‘glide’, fennesz duets with rosy parlane (nz), whose work is also released on touch. fennesz also teams up with emego artist anthony pateras (aus), whose prepared piano features on "the colour of three". fennesz pushes his work into a more classical domain, preferring the slow reveal to venice’s and endless summer’s more song-based structures.

jon wozencroft’s artwork makes visible this carefully hidden world resting beneath the surface of “the first impression”. a series of shots, taken in quick succession as the tide recedes, reveals a world of specific activity only visible at a particular time and place, histories appearing and disappearing.

2004 release ; first global transmission from the kuala lumpur-based “experimental musicians and artists co-operative malaysia” , whose various members contribute 5 of the 25 tracks herein ...

the other 20 are from a who’s who of the int’l sound-research circuit and are of phenomenally high quality (the exoticity of the label’s point of origin must have been a contributing factor in getting all involved to contribute vital examples of their work instead of 2nd-tier comp-track dreck) ...

what i’m finding the most enjoyable about this set is the curatorial aspect ... the wide variety of approaches and fidelities on display somehow all blur boundaries in a highly listenable fashion (i.e. instead of segueing the work of like-minded auteurs into dovetail-like situations, the digital pieces morph into the analog into the lo-fi into the composed into the improvised ... many labels could learn volumes from the sequencing of this record alone), making this amongst the first comps to have a “soul”, so to speak...

completely essential listening, one of my favorite comps from recent times ...
