andrew deutsch
lung cleaner

i created lung cleaner for eric lanzillotta when he was sick with a serious lung infection which lasted for months. i hoped to help him recover by imagining a "sonic cure", an "art pill". the work continued after his illness and the notion of using metaphor as a compositional starting point has, at this time, formed the basis for all my sonic research and composition.

some other points of departure:
digital structuralism, modular systemic processing, solitary parameter based interactive performance, image drones, contextual music, glaze/kiln music, analog/digital hybrids, granular synthesis, headphones, time grafting, modular synthesis, micro tonal clusters, moment clusters, destructive improvisational editing, rate of change patterns, logarithmic processing, filters, time sweeps, restricted randomization patterns, iannis xenakis, merzbow, john cage, and gyorgy ligeti.

source materials included: wine glasses, baby toys, pure tones, bells, music boxes, gears, water, etc...track 2: "dizzy from the cold meds" contains samples of 3 unpublished early electronic works by pauline oliveros dating from around 1966.

andrew deutsch "electronic garden" cd

"in his assessment of music, philosopher and mystic rudolf stiener attributes a major part of human perception to the experience of the ethereal body. the ethereal body is a form unknown to (so called) normal consciousness. it is obscured by worldly tasks and the experiences of everyday life. the ethereal body is only fully experienced during sleep, where it emerges slowly in stages over the course of the evening. once awakened, the ethereal bodies primary experiences is of light and tone and of being engulfed by a shimmering delicate tonal atmosphere. when the 'worldly body' awakens the ethereal body returns again to obscurity, diminished by daily routine. however, when in our daily routine and if we give time to it, we come in contact with music, or certain kinds of images or art, the ethereal body is touched, awakened inside the worldly body. this is why we are sometimes moved to emotion by music or images. the ethereal body is awakened within us and experienced by our worldly body. flowers open within us, a garden of experiences and emotion emerge and we can not help but yield to the needs of the ethereal body and its sensations. stiener proposes that a well balanced person is one who experiences the worldly body and ethereal body at the same time on a daily basis. listening to music and an involvement with art may be the only ways to establish this balance and unity, therefore, as suggested by joseph beuys we must expand the practice of art into every aspect of culture - especially daily routine.

electronic garden is a series of sound works constructed using broken music boxes, ring modulators and frequency shifters, i call these electro-mechanical loops. my interest in these works first developed out of early experiments with analog and digital tape loops and later extended into music boxes. music boxes are mechanical loops set into motion via spring compression and consequently have the character of winding down as they play. this compositional unfolding is most delightful as it destroys the often gebrauchsmusik quality of music box melodies. to further destroy this music of the home i explored the possibilities of working exclusively with broken music boxes as their melodic structures would be readymade destroyed. further, they often squeaked, squabbled, and burped as they played. additional deconstructions were performed with electronics.

i have made hundreds of these little compositions and the practice of making them occupies the greatest degree of my free time. electronic garden contains a special contribution by sawako kato of japan. exchanging files via mail and conversing through e-mail, sawako reconstructed parts of electronic garden resulting in 2 new tracks which deutsch later combined for release on electronic garden. the cover images for this cd were inspired by the notebooks and 'field drawings' of book artist john wood. each cd of this edition contains a hand made watercolor accented with gold leaf and his hand signed along with a photographic fragment verso.

produced at the institute for electronic arts, alfred, ny

"field tracker" was recorded at the institute for electronic art, alfred ny during the winter of 2000. inoue, utilizing his digital sound processing systems in combination with bells, guitar, and other odd sound making objects, constructed tiny improvisational sound moments each one having a shape and gesture of their own.

these "micro compositions" were at times highly abstract and noisy and at other times extremely melodic and calm. many of these micro compositions were used in the production of his recent release "object and organic code", the others (almost 2 hours worth) were handed over to andrew deutsch who was to construct another release combining sounds of his own.

being responsible for the overall "auskomponierung" or "compositional unfolding" of the work, deutsch combined synthesized sounds, drones, chatter, loops and other dsp techniques to produce what he hoped would be a kind of "gebrauchsmusik" or "useful music" that one might use in the home. the work has a notion of "ambitendency" built into it, that is, the tendency toward change combined with an equal tendency toward stasis. the work could be described as "meta-divisionism", 'baroque minimalism", or "expanded systemic digital minimalism".

sound works for our new recombinatory world.

all transparent jewel case.
poetry and texts by andrew deutsch and giuseppe caprioli.

moltitudine in labirinto is a poetic journey drawn with sound. an unveiled meeting. the minimal sequences, the recognizable character of masin’s music, here are fused with the electronicvision” of giuseppe caprioli, more harsh, materic. the result is a fascinating hybrid, a new modern music, leaden and grieved, lost voice in the maze of memories.

this cd, at the same time the new work of masin and the “first time” for caprioli, stands as a high expression in the lineage of evolution of the ever growing ambient/electronic scene.

pauline oliveros (accordion with expanded instrument system)
peer bode (live text with bode vocoder)
andrew deutsch (live mixing, archival recordings, samples, loops and electronics)

voice coil was performed by the carrier band in the fall of 2003 at the deep listening space in kingston, new york. pauline oliveros performed on accordion and computer-based expanded instrument system, peer bode performed live text with his bode vocoder, and andrew deutsch performed live mixing, archival recordings from the bode archive, samples, loops and electronics.

voice coil is an example of an improvisation emphasizing the integration of analog systems and new digital tools between performers both living and deceased. in 2007, andrew deutsch added about 35 minutes of short overdubs to the recordings and has brought the recording closer to what the audience heard at the deep listening space. furthermore, the overdubs provide added depth to the work for repeated listening. 'frozen speaker' is an electronic composition by andrew deutsch and features sections from oliveros' music for expo 70. 'video voice' uses sounds from pauline oliveros' electronic works 'v of iv' and 'mewsak,' as well as elements of stephen vitiello's 'light meter' recordings. the carrier band was formed in 1998 when pauline oliveros, peer bode, and andrew deutsch performed 3 improvisations at alfred university that were later released as the carrier cd on the deep listening label.

the carrier band was formed in 1998 when pauline oliveros, peer bode and andrew deutsch performed 3 improvisations at alfred university and later released the carrier cd on dl.

the title piece 'automatic inscription of speech melody' is a trio improvisation by carrier band based on quotes written in the technical notebooks (1934-1949) of pioneering electronic instrument developer harald bode. the piece weaves words and phrases excerpted from the notebooks spoken and vocoded by peer bode through the bode vocoder. the vocoder transfers speech onto pitched sounds and the voice releases the carrier sounds. these texts, along with pauline's electronic sounds created on her difference box were mixed with loops and excerpts of harald bode's demo tapes and synthesized sounds constructed by deutsch. the lfo drone heard at the beginning was pauline's entrance into the piece.

'earth orbit' is a quartet improvisation which dick described as being 'the most fun he's ever had performing' loops and text from harald bode's notebooks were once again used along with data sets generated by deutsch.

here we go...

a full-length disc of superb dense and inviting drones from andrew deutsch; using a system of analogue tape & delay units & a copy of mahler’s 5th to yield some heavy, emotional music. trumps most of what i’ve heard of william basinski’s recent output; much more information and less straight repetition. excellent stuff.

andrew deutsch - “loops over land” - cd slipcase (divf05)

loops over land consists of about 50 min. of loops produced using an analog reel to reel tape deck and an analog tape delay system (provided by neil rolnick). the loops were constructed using random "scissors clips" of mahler's 5th symphony and thus reflect the pastoral feel of his original composition. some of what sound like drum beats in the loops are actually sloppy splices bathed in reverb. production of the loops happened over the course of 2 days while i was confined to my apartment dodging an enormous snow storm.

during these days of looping and confinement, i listened as deeply as possible to the sounds and envisioned large circular loops of light slowly turning over the landscape. the landscapes themselves were of lush green fields and hills dripping in recent rain while the loops shimmered gold each holding their own shape. loops over land continues what i have been calling since 1987 "image drones", image drones are drones that are meant to evoke a very specific image for the listener. not specific in terms of what i want to communicate, but specific in the action of triggering the imagination of the listener. the image produced by an image drone can be any image, but the drone itself should trigger mental images. i also consider these recordings to reflect my interest in "romantic structuralism", a term coined by filmmaker ken jacobs. it seems illogical to bring the theories of structuralism and romanticism together (this was the seed of the split between boulez and stockhausen). however, the power of the "structuralist activity" (see barthes) lies in the possibility of revealing hidden functions existing structures. the function of tonal materials in the works of mahler were intended to induce emotive states in the listener. what i have done is isolated "tonal moments" and made manifest their explicit function.

the loops of loops over land are loops of emotion embodied in the traditional form of minimalist composition. will the loops always evoke the same feeling in every listener? i believe they will come close, at least to the western ear.

released 02.2006

the i.k.k.-project started in 1794, when christoph schmid wrote the lyrics for ihr kinderlein kommet, using a melody by contemporary composer johann abraham peter schulz. it was performed soon after in thanhausen an der mindel for the first time. in 2001, a few weeks before xmas, i recorded my daughter sonja (aged 5 then) singing some of her favourite xmas tunes.

wonderful recordings. her singing is full of emotional power and she even hits the right notes from time to time. the interesting moments are when her voice is moving around those notes. instead of burying those recordings in the archive i came back to them soon after, because jos moers (the owner of the label meeuw muzak) was asking me to contribute to a series of xmas 7"s he does once every year. so i recorded one for him early in 2002 for 2003’s yearly event: merry merry. side 2 has a funny piece composed from a transformed ihr kinderlein kommet.

when the 7" was done i had the impression that the transformed sounds had a quality of their own, so i used them for further transformations, as well as to compose a new piece of about 15 minutes: i.k.k. – purpurscharlachrot. following my inclination for collaborative works i thought that this material could be of interest, not only for me, but also for other artists to work with. so i prepared a cd-r with the existing versions and some basic material from the piece. pieces have been submitted by dan warburton, andrew deutsch, chris halliwell, strotter inst., stephen vitiello and frisch/rainey/wehowsky.

ralf wehowsky

founder of the group p.d. (1981 renamed p16.d4) and the label wahrnehmungen (1982 renamed selektion) in 1980. p16.d4 was one of the most influential groups in experimental industrial music. they developed concepts of material exchange long before the term «remix» was even coined. for their live appearances they were equally at home in punk and no wave festivals and at the holy grails of academic avantgarde like the internationale ferienkurse für neue musik, darmstadt.since the early 1990s wehowsky works under his own name (rlw). his quiet, highly complex style of composition – based on artifacts of instrumental and electronic sound – is influential for numerous artists in the fields of electronic and improvised music. some reflections on his work can be found on tulpas, a 5cd-box-set, featuring more than 50 artists performing their versions of his pieces (jim o´rourke, brume, achim wollscheid, toshiya tsunoda, john duncan, antanas jasenka, ryoji ikeda, john watermann and others).

his recent work embraces musique concrète improvisée (with bruce russell, and johannes frisch, among others) as well as projects based on extended material exchange (i.k.k.).
