san agustin with suzanne langille
passing song
fv9 cd ep

the new york city based san agustin has been performing with vocalist suzanne langille since 1997. the two have found an unmatchable connection in their expansive dialogue of impeccably matched twin guitars and percussion with the ageless blue moaned singing and lyrics. these six passing songs are meticulous flares, crafted in the highest order. slightly dissonant leanings and free spirit that is carried by a woman who has lived each word she sings.

the blues has grown up a lot in the last ten years, since guitarist andrew burnes left new york for georgia, bringing a de facto end to the powerful abstract blues of haunted house. in the time since, a new generation — sometimes referred to as freak folk or new weird america and spearheaded by tom carter*, jack rose and ben chasny — has followed in the footsteps of loren connors, john fahey and a handful of others who have long maintained that the blues is something more than 12 bars and a backbeat.

after the demise of haunted house, connors continued preaching the gospel, often with his wife — the enigmatic singer suzanne langille — to anyone who would listen, playing a slow, distorted, reverb-drenched blues as slowly the world began to come around. then, in the summer of 2010, the stars aligned just so: burnes was in town for a few days, percussionist neel murgai was available, and the brooklyn’s issue project room was booking matinee concerts in their courtyard. the band had only existed for a brief two years and had been absent for a decade, but they picked up right where they left off with only a brief soundcheck as rehearsal. another matter of months, and they were in the studio, recording at long last the follow-up to their 1999 erstwhile release up in flames.

looking back, maybe it isn’t that the blues has grown up. maybe it has reverted to its youth. after all, john lee hooker, son house and mississippi fred mcdowell weren’t beholden to any 12-bar fixity. nor was lonnie johnson, whose song “haunted house” gave the band its name. they all played it how they felt it. it wasn’t until the 1960s and the british blues revival (its champion, ironically perhaps, being connors’ beloved eric clapton) that the blues was codified into its current formula.

haunted house is an unusual band. with indian hand percussion and no bass, they don’t look like a blues band — and maybe they’re not. but they play it how they feel it. what more could you ask for?

table of the elements (usa) #toe 098c lp

andrew burnestelescope (green vinyl)” one-sided long playing record

  • telescope (20:12)
november 2008 release ; the seventh in the “guitar series vols. 3 & 4 ...

first solo release from san agustin / haunted house guitarist andrew burnes, 20+ minutes of sliding ebow / lap-steel tones reminiscent of a more present take on folke rabe’s “was?” ; that this is being released on vinyl adds just so much more to the overall feel of the piece - the slight pitch-slide that happens with each successive rotation of the record (listen to the sound-sample) lends a certain woozy vibe to the proceedings ...

this is a really nice one, esp. if extremely “gradual” music is your thing ...
table of the elements press release...

andrew burnes
telescope

table of the elements continues to celebrate its 15th anniversary with the seventh installment in its guitar series vols. 3 & 4. it’s a 12xlp romp of deviant fretnoise by some of experimental music’s most prominent players, including christian fennesz, thurston moore, and sunn o)))’s stephen o’malley.

table of the elements happily presents the long-overdue solo debut of andrew burnes. burnes, along with david daniell, is a founding member of the ethereal, post-blues ensemble san agustin; he’s also a member of haunted house, alongside loren mazzacane connors; and he’s performed in improv settings with the likes of ken vandermark and thurston moore. finally committed to vinyl, he doesn’t disappoint: telescope is a glittering chunk of sound, as burnes transforms that particular emblem of americana, the steel guitar, into one vast, slowly undulating drone.

andrew burnes’ name may not be familiar, but fans of the genre needn’t worry. back in 1993, table of the elements’ original guitar series featured what was only the second us solo release from a similarly unknown artist: jim o’rourke. you can trust us again with this one.

georgia natives san agustin have performed with a multitude of notables from the improvised community, including ken vandermark, thurston moore, loren mazzacane and others, but this boxed set is the first truly representative document of their live presence.

haunting moments of introspection are enveloped in clouds of bluesy guitar notes, then swept away by great electric gales; drones rumble and shimmer in the aftermath. the expanding sea is a sweeping work by a tremendous ensemble, one that is discreetly creating a genre-defying yet archetypically american music.
