highlights from the works of andré popp 1952-62
the eccentric french composer and orchestra leader andré popp (b. 1924) is best known for writing the worldwide hit "love is blue" (us #1 for paul mauriat in 1968).
but there's lots more. over a long and colorful career, popp's own richly layered recordings, full of unexpected twists and turns, were spiked with mischievous experiments in tape manipulation and featured exotic instruments like the ondes martenot and musical saw. popp considers himself self-taught, though confesses he learned many tricks from musical legends jean wiener and roger roger. popp's evocative soundscapes echo one of his contemporaries, nino rota.
la musique qui fait popp features 21 elegant vignettes composed by popp for french radio in the 1950s and 60s. such titles as "bop polka," "ciné surprise," and "skating mouse" reflect the playfulness of this music. all tunes were faithfully recreated by the dutch metropole orchestra playing from the original scores, provided by mr. popp. album produced by gert-jan blom of the beau hunks, with cover art by noted dutch illustrator ever meulen. |
