dszc1 manuel zurria repeat!

genre: minimalism, electro-acoustic
format: 3xcd digipack
description: triple cd – multi-fold deluxe digipak + 16-pages booklet

the restless experimentation and creativity of manuel zurria (of alter ego fame) has resulted in a brilliant series of collaborative works with legendary composers such as luc ferrari, alvin lucier, arvo part, john cage, morton feldman, lászló sáry, louis andriessen, aldo clementi, zoltan jeney, stefano scodanibbio, salvatore sciarrino, jonathan harvey and kevin volans. a truly stunning mixture of electronic and longform electro-acoustic pieces, repetitive ethnic rhythms, drones and delay, field recordings, flute and the human voice.

repeat is the diary of an obsession that has been accompanying me for four long years. alighiero boetti, one of the fathers of italian conceptual art, had fit out along a wall of his house in rome his most introspective work: the wall. on this wall he showed, continuously modifying their choice and position, objects and works belonging to his own production or to the one of other artists friends, together with objects he found by chance on the street, family pictures and drawings of his children. in other words, his own world. during the realisation of this project i have been reading “difference and repetition” by gilles deleuze, which gave me the occasion to ponder on the involvements that bring back to the principle of repetition in music of our time. in a certain sense, deleuze’s writing allowed me to focus on the importance of repetition as a perceptive fact, and as an experience of listening in accumulation. in the same time, i thought of repetition as difference, as a minimal fact, as trance. this element has been determinant in my activity and allowed me to collaborate during the years with musicians who look at repetition as an exciting experience, both physical and mystic.

the barton workshop:

john anderson, clarinet
frank denyer, piano
james fulkerson, trombone
marieke keser, violin
judith van swaay, cello
jos tieman, double bass

the music on these cds takes us into a new realm of music making, one that alvin lucier (b. 1931) has defined for us and one that demands that we start to listen anew. his work has been more often described in terms of science than of art as if it were a series of quasi-scientific experiments, but to put the emphasis here is to miss the point, for its purpose is never “explanatory” (the goal of science) but, like all art, “revelatory.” this is not to suggest that the composer has some spiritual agenda in the usual sense of this term. on the contrary, it is the physical behavior of sound itself that he so elegantly reveals, each work unveiling an otherwise hidden or ephemeral aspect of aural phenomena and allowing us time to witness its beauty. he achieves this by ruthlessly excluding any trace of self-expression, or indeed anything extraneous to the phenomenon itself.

the barton workshop has been the only group to really work closely with lucier in terms of doing “portraits” of his work (the first in 1995), commissioning new works (40 rooms, bar lazy j, and q) and performing older/extant pieces. this 2-cd set is the fruit of this long collaborative process.

vespers and other early works

alvin lucier (b. 1931) is best known for his pioneering work in the mid-sixties in the exploration of sonic environments, particularly sounds that we would never perceive under ordinary circumstances. vespers and other early works restores to the catalog several of his key works from that time. in vespers (1969) performers with sondols (sonar-dolphin), hand-held pulse wave oscillators, explore the acoustic characteristics of given indoor or outdoor spaces by monitoring the echoes of the pulse waves off the walls, floors and ceilings, as well as any objects or obstacles in range of the sound waves. over time, the listener receives an acoustic signature of the room. in chambers (1968), battery-operated radios, tape recorders, and electronically powered toys of various kinds are hidden in paper bags, shoes, kettles, and small suitcases and other small resonant environments. as performers carry these small “rooms” into larger ones, such as concert halls, football stadiums and underground cisterns, the sounds, already altered by the acoustics of the small environments, are altered a second time by the acoustics of the larger ones. this version was recorded in 2002.

north american time capsule (1967), for voices and vocoder, is described metaphorically by lucier as a message to listeners who don’t know about us. these could be very remote and exotic humans or the fabled “beings” in some other part of the universe. the message is encoded in accordance with the empirical fact that purely electronic signals are more easily transmitted through space (and through time) than the more complex waveforms of speech.

(middletown) memory space (1970) is a reenactment of the composition called “(hartford) memory space, for any number of instrumental players with recordings of environmental sounds.” the instructions for the original (city) composition say: “for performances in places other than hartford, use the name of the place of performance in parentheses at the beginning of the title.” the instructions tell the performers to go out into the city and record, by any means—electronic recording, graphic notation, or memory—the sounds of the city, and to return to the inside performance space at any time and “re-create, solely by means of your voices and instruments and with the aid of memory devices (without additions, deletions, improvisation, interpretation) those outside sound situations.” elegy for albert anastasia (1961–1963) is described as composed “for electromagnetic tape using very low sounds most of which are below human audibility.” liner notes by robert ashley.

pogus is extremely delighted to release this 2 cd set of recordings of works by alvin lucier. he is one of the key experimental artists of the 20th and 21st centuries, and is one of my favorite composers. a unique and individual artist: no one sounds quite like alvin lucier.

lucier writes about the genesis of the works on this release:

since the early 1980's i have made a series of works for conventional musical instruments. before that time i had been mainly occupied with the exploration of such phenomena as echolocation, brain waves, room acoustics and the visual representation of sound. often these works required special equipment-hand held pulse wave oscillators (vespers), differential amplifiers (music for solo performer), horseshoe magnets (music on a long thin wire). then players began asking me for pieces. now i needed to find a way of achieving the same poetry with acoustic instruments as i did with electronic means.

one of the things i discovered was that players could create rhythmic patterns by closely tuning with electronically generated pure waves or with each other, producing audible beats. often, to get continuous motion, i have one or more voices sweep up or down at various speeds against fixed sustained pitches. as a wave approaches a sustained pitch the audible beating slows down to zero when it reaches unison, then speeds up again as the wave leaves the pitch. almost new york employs slow sweep pure wave oscillators, broken line, flute glissandi. in twonings two different tuning systems collide and in coda variations slight variations in pitch are heard chronologically.

recorded by charles curtis, joseph kubera, robert dick, danny tunick, and robin hayward - some of the leading new music performers of our era, these works are essential additions to the alvin lucier oeuvre, as well as satisfying anyone interested in great experimental music.

  • annea lockwood - tiger balm (10:26)
february 2009 release ; astoundingly great collection of some of the classic pieces from the 60s avant-garde / live electronic music wave presented here as originally issued (in chronological order) by larry austin & stanley lunetta via their “source: music of the avant garde” magazine & 10” record series between 1967 and 1973 ...

given the covetable / legendary nature of the original issues, the appearance of this set is highly welcome ; aside from the alternate versions of such classic pieces such as robert ashley’s “the wolfman” and alvin lucier’s “i am sitting in a room,” i found myself leaping out of my seat more often than not to check the credits of pieces with which i wasn’t already familiar ; in fact at the tail-end of the 1-2-3-4 punch of the second disc’s arthur woodbury - mark riener - larry austin - stanley lunetta quadfecta (listen to the sound-sample for the lunetta) i wondered out loud if i had the input-selector switch wrong & was instead listening to the new hanson tape ...

this is a major reissue project ; no follower of mid 20th century composition / sound-art practice and or the historic origins of noise should be caught dead without it ...

music of the avant garde, 1968-1971

the digital reissue of the source lp's on 3 cds

pogus is extremely proud to reissue the recordings included in the seminal new music journal, source: music of the avant garde, vols. 1-6, issues 1-11, source records 1-6, 1967-1973. the original six ten-inch lp source records contained some of the most important experimental music of the nineteen-sixties to mid nineteen-seventies and they have now been reissued as a 3 cd set. source ended publication in 1973, having published, since 1967 , contemporary musical materials, scores, articles, interviews, photo essays and recordings over seven years, with up to 2000 subscribers to the semiannual journal: the subscribers avidly anticipated receiving two new and critically acclaimed issues each year during that period.

most of the original tape masters for the records, after over forty years, have vanished or have seriously deteriorated; hence, we have carefully transferred, noise-reduced, and crackle-removed all the actual lp record tracks to the digital medium, then mastered to the compact disc format for this reissue: the result is an authentic recreation of the original lp, characteristic sound.
